I went to Japan 5 years ago, just before covid. I found the statue by accident, I wasn't looking for it, and I immediately knew. I have never even seen the movie but stuff like the Futurama episode got me to know about this story. The statue is very small and unassuming, it sits in the middle of a little plaza with seats around it. It's very touching.
Growing up I had an Akita and I can confirm that they are so insanely loyal to family, she was the best dog ever. I've seen this movie a few times whenever I need a good cry because I will absolutely always cry and be an absolute mess no matter what. Hachi reminds me so much of my dog and it just hits so hard. I've got such fond memories and I miss her, but so happy that I have those memories to look back on. I always tell people that claim to not cry at movies that if you don't cry for this movie you do not have human emotions.
Thank you for reminding me of this gem! This was a great episode. After watching this movie, my friend named her Shiba Inu named Hachi. I enjoyed dog sitting him. I adopted my dog in 2022 as a companion after moving. I was told that her original owner passed away in 2018, and she was being fostered ever since. She definitely has some strong separation anxiety.
The Dogs Name was Hachiko ..Hachikō (ハチ公, November 10, 1923 - March 8, 1935) was a Japanese Akita dog remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his owner, Hidesaburō Ueno, for whom he continued to wait for over nine years following Ueno's death.
So...two movies I watched once and will never watch again, and Hachi is one of them. The happier sculpture of him is one where he is reunited with Prof. Ueno. It's at Tokyo University. The other movie I refuse to watch again is "The Grave of the Fireflies"
Same! As much as I love the movie Hachi, I can’t take the emotional damage it causes. I can’t even watch people react to it without breaking down crying with them. Grave of the fireflies traumatized me so bad in high school that I refuse to ever watch it again. I didn’t even watch it voluntarily the first time 😅 I had to watch it for a group project in class
I've only watched this movie a couple of times. It's a wonderful beautiful movie but it's very hard to get through. Even knowing the outcome. It never fails to destroy me. Whether I watch the movie completely or just watch a reaction. This is my first time commenting on a reaction of yours but they're always great. It was great to get to cry together. Thank you for watching this amazing movie!
I know in this case it was sudden, but it's always important to let a dog see their owner once they have passed on. They understand death and it will help with their grieving. Not just dogs by the way, other animals too.
In Krakow, Poland, there is a similar history, with a dog named Dżok, who also waited for his owner at the train station. And they made him a statue that it's now close to Wawel Castle.
I wonder what kind of emotionally stunted human can watch Hachi and Marley And Me, without crying their eyes out hard?? Is it even possible to do so?? 🥺
The real dog is referred to as Hachiko in Japan. The -ko suffix is like saying Hackisan (or Danialsan for karate kid fans). The difference is that -ko is used in reverence almost like saying Sir Hachi as opposed to Mr Hachi.
I’m normally the type of person that doesn’t like to get in touch with my emotions or cry. Because I like to think that I’m strong mentally. But my God, this movie broke me This movie was one hell of a challenge for me to let my emotional side come out. Every time I watch other people react to this movie, it still makes me tear up. Like I literally have to fight so hard to hold back the tears. Because me being a dog lover the story is truly sad and tragic and very depressing. And it is even more depressing that it’s based on a true story. Like the dog actually did that throughout the rest of its life. But it truly does show just how loyal dogs really are and it shows of how a bond between the dog and its owner could never be replaced.
I haven't seen this movie myself, but I was aware of Hachikō's story--and have seen the Futurama episode as well--and have seen multiple reactions to it. I HATE watching the reactions only because it's painful every single time and I always get all choked up fighting the urge to cry.
So weird how much Hachi as a pup looked like a shiba inu. I had the best shiba, a little guy named Theo, who fit in the palm of my hand when he first arrived. I feel like akitas are so similar in their aloof version of loyalty. They're too dignified to be suck-ups, yet they love the rare people they bond to with a ferocity you can barely comprehend. I still haven't seen this movie, just reactions, probably because I'm scared how much it would ruin me.
This is the first time in months since I have seen anything related to dogs. I just haven’t been able to watch anything to do with dogs since my dog passed. I miss him every day. And sadly you have posted this on his birthday today he would’ve been 14
It's okay, Vicky, this movie broke me too.... Almost every movie that has something to do with a dog I'm most likely to cry because you feel for them. I cried on Marley and Me because of one scene, Fluke made me cry and I've become so more emotional now every time I'm rewatching Homeward Bound: An Incredible Journey, because I now feel more of the relationship between the boy and the golden retriever (because I used to have golden girl who I still miss even to this day). But Homeward Bound is a great movie, amazing animal actors and great, funny voice work by Michael J. Fox, Sally Field and Don Amche. I highly recommend that movie for a reaction, Vicky, and If you do decide to watch it, bring tissues...
I'm upset at the person that got me to watch this. It is a very well done movie but acquaintances have a habit of getting me to watch things they know will break me and not warning me about it. Heck this should have a "tissue warning" in start that says something like "this film may rip out your heart and but it in a blender". And it is a dog movie so I already figured it be sad but my word this is on another level of heartbreak.
I never had a dog when I was little or now as a 20 year old but boy I think the execution of the film is happy, sad, and loneliness because the owner was a great caring man who loved by treating Hatchi like a son and Hatchi will always wait for his dad to come out of the building to do whatever they wanted to do.
Haha same i cant see Jason Alexander in anything without thinking of him as George Costanza. Another good dogmovie thats based on true events is Togo if you are interested.
Your reaction has HUMANIZED me, SO MUCH; I WAS WEEPING WITH YOU VKUNIA. If this film does not change your perspective on WHAT LOYALTY REALLY MEANS, I don't know what film will. THIS SHOULD CHANGE ON HOW ANIMALS SHOULD BE RESPECTIED, VALUED AND LOVED. You have a BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT, VKunia (as well as others that reacted to this movie).
Based on true events that happened in Japan in the 1920s. There's a new statue that opened in 2015 of Hachi and Ueno-san reunited at the campus he taught at.
I love this one, but I like even more "Marley and me" personally, it's also sad, but not only sad it has some comedy elements and happy moments, it's more balanced, might be suicide to watch it right after this one but if you feel like watching a cute dog story, watch it eventually, tho have tissues ready anyway.
Watching this with my wife, we were both balling our eyes out. Then I looked it up on Wikipedia to see how true it was and we had to stop the movie and cried even harder.
People want to be loved and they want to believe this. But dogs' main concern is to be fed. Truth may not be pretty. Deep human connection is so much more complicated, risky, even dangerous, but when it's real, it's real.
I watched along even though I hate Richard Gere and don't like how they whitewashed a Japanese story with a Japanese dog breed and Japanese name just to make it more palatable to American audiences who weren't even offered the opportunity to see in actual theaters. Perhaps the best adaptation of Hachiko's story is one of the most memorable episodes of Futurama, Jurassic Bark.
I dont like you. But Ive been watching Hachi reactions for the past hour and half or so. Then I resfresh youtube. And yours just came up. New Hachi reaction just uploaded. Wow. Thats crazy 😅 Good day Vkunia
Hi repentance to God God will forgive you don't matter what you did Jesus love you just the way you are Jesus will set you free of any addiction accept Jesus in your life and trust in Jesus you are not a alone in your storm and you are amazing don't forget it ❤❤❤
You're projecting your own apparent anxieties by assuming others feel "alone" in a "storm"; not everyone views the world-or life's challenges-through your lens. And, of course, your comment is irrelevant to the context.

Till this day this still remains THE ONLY movie that i shed a little tear and im an emotionless bastard and ive watched thousands of movies 😂
This movie kills me every time I see it. Especially the scene with Cate and Hachi at the train station and Hachi reuniting with Parker when he dies
Growing up I had an Akita and I can confirm that they are so insanely loyal to family, she was the best dog ever. At 20:37, I can't believe Hachi is looking into the eyes of...Shang TSung of Mortal Kombat!! 😂🤣
Your soul is mine.
You just can’t be prepared for the emotions this movie causes. Then finding out it’s true makes it even more touching
Thank you for reminding me of this gem! This was a great episode.

Some people say that if tearjerker movies don't kill you, they make you stronger.
Some people say that.... 😭
My wife saw you were reacting to this movie and immediately said, “Oh God that poor girl…”

@ Look up the sculpture of Hachi and Ueno reunited, it'll make you smile
@ oh I have, I go look at it after I watch the movie and any reactions to the movie. It makes me feel better
I've only watched this movie a couple of times. It's a wonderful beautiful movie but it's very hard to get through. Even knowing the outcome. It never fails to destroy me. I used to visit Japan often and I always stay in the Shibuya area. I always visit the Hachikō statue and take a selfie 🎤👇

"why did I watch this?" A lot people ask themselves that question 😊 the problem is you spoiled it by reading what the entire story is about.
I appreciate you and thank you for making content.
My Dog Skip (2000), Max (2015) and Arthur the King (2024) are some other great dog movies that you should watch next.
I watched this movie twice in my life and I promised myself never to do it again.
I watched it once and did the same. Aaaand I'm here and bawling.
This movie is amazing, all dog lovers breaks up! We don't deserve them!
I swore I would never watch this movie again, once was enough
Pets need closure, too. It's important to let them see the body, if it's at all possible.
You should watch A Dog’s Purpose and Rescued by Ruby next.
You really should watch A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey
Hi Vkunia hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
WE DON'T DESERVE DOGS
Richard Gere & Jason Alexander in the same movie?!? I thought this was Pretty Woman 2 for a second.
great, watch Grave of the Fireflies next, easy to watch on one go
You should watch Marley and Me

You should watch Isle of dogs
I love this film although it kills my heart every damn time I see it...
Whenever I see this movie pop up on my feed for a streamer I love I sharp inhale and feel a pain in my chest.
Whatever you do, don't watch the Futurama episode "Jurassic Bark."
In case I need heavy Cry..I watch this movie 🥲
It's ok, this movie broke a lot of people.
You have to let the doggos know they passed. So they know. 💔💔💔💔💔💔
Only movie to make me cry.
Yeah, that’s why I deliberately avoid movies with “dog” in the title
You have to watch rocky IV the ultimate director's cut
People don't deserve dogs
there is a episode of futurama that has a nod to this story.
Sad movie 😢😢😢😢😢
Love your heart So Much. I hope you watched something funny after this.
big big hugs n love Vee =)
Omg I forgot this movie was so good
I've only heard of this movie and I know I will never bring myself to watch it!
I clicked to give you a view and show support, but hell no
Whenever I see this movie, I cry every single time...

Based on true events that happened in Japan in the 1920s.

They should have brought Hachi to the funeral to get closure.

This movie is based on a true story.
Nah nah nah nah nah. Im not gonna watch this movie again because its gonna ruin 10 years of therapy for me
