RADEON Vii can overclock! Move over Nvidia!

  • AMD Radeon Vii launched with some question of whether or not it would be able to overclock. The 19.2.2 driver update unlocked a staggering 200mhz worth of overclocking potential, but is that enough to match the likes of the Nvidia's 1080 ti or 2080?

AMD runs on decibel power. "Is it too loud?" isn't the right question. The question should be "How loud can we get?" We should demand louder cards that we get to rev up like car engines by pressing on the spacebar.

While it may not be absolutely higher than the 2080 or 2080 Ti, it's a heck of a lot more stable and no stutter compared to Nvidia cards in select games, especially in 'heavy' frame hurting games that eats up VRAM like no tomorrow.

These cards are capable of 2200+ but they lack the cooling. Under water these cards are routinely getting 2150+ core.
So I am hoping the waterblocks EK puts out in about 2 months will do good for these cards.
I know my Vega64 is a silicon lottery winner. 1855Mhz is where mine tops out at. HBM2 is iffy.. 1150 is possible but only under 42C. Generally I am stuck around 1100 on the HBM2. So you'd think these 7nm cards could hit the 2.0-2.2Ghz marks.

Historically when AMD launches a new card on a new die shrink they normally release a budget card. They would take an existing gpu and shrink it, then do a run of gpu's to test the new die shrink, and work out the bugs, in the past they would do this on budget cards, but this time they did their flagship card. I think in the past they avoid top tier reviews by releasing a budget card, and often it would get great reviews for a budget card avoiding negative press from releasing a top tier card on die shrink. It takes about 2 to 3 months to print a gpu, all those fabs working together making a gpu. So every time they make a batch of gpu's they can test em then tweek the next batch, etc. So this would explain why there's a small batch of AMD 7's, and why the drivers where rushed... AMD is working hard on their navie cards which might be out in 3 months or so, (cuz it takes 2 to 3 months to print those gpu's, after tweaking the first batch of gpu's (amd 7's).

It seems like the Vega 64 has become a tremendous value with time. The drivers evolved, the game support improved and pricing is very favorable now.
Clearly Vega 64 is the better value today and seems to be roughly 1080 performance at well below what 1080 prices were a few months ago, and way below what they are today.
I would not be surprised if Radeon VII does not improve a lot from here. New game drivers and configs will find ways to use that extra memory and fat pipe to deliver extra performance.
Just as AMD is pushing core count on CPUs I wonder if they won't push memory speed and pipe on the GPU side. Textures and shaders are all about memory.

Still sitting at 2146MHz peak Clock in FireStrike at 1.17V...can't go higher with the stock cooler. I reached out to Raijintek and asked them if a Morpheus is planned for the VII or any other cooler at that, and they said that they just got the scans and are working on it. I guess we can expect some decent coolers for the VII in 2-3 months.
Still, even with that I doubt going above 2100MHz on air is not possible due to temps. Still, despite the 1.17V, the card itself roughly draws 360W peak, that is pretty nice still. Something like 2050-2080 at around 1.1V or even 1.08 if you got a decent card should be ok.

Totally agree, AMD's BIGGEST mistake with the Radeon VII was not being diligent enough with their marketing. It was funny and SOOOO on point watching Steve scolding AMD for the terrible launch. They probably had so much confidence in what the card can do that they didn't pay attention to the details. I ordered mine after watching Jay, Steve @ GN, Digital Foundries, and der8auer. In fact it was Jay saying he would use the Radeon VII and der8auer hitting 2100mhz on dry ice with bad drivers, that did it for me and aside from not yet having good drivers and straightforward overclocking or undervolting capabilities in Linux, I don't regret getting the card

They are good cards, I never imagined I'd hear even Buildzoid say he would pay $1,000 for a Radeon VII if AMD restored the 2 or 4 VRMs missing from the pcb and marketed it as something like a Radeon VII-X. A lot of the drama on the interwebs came because of the botched launch, the price and no 8GB version. Hence the who needs 16GB of VRAM.
I can safely say from playing the latest Star Citizen alpha at 4K ultra on Linux using WINE/DXVK, I have seen the game using 9-10GB of VRAM not simply requested but actual used VRAM.

Vega 7 was never intended to be released to counter Nvidia RTX, it's a stop gap, also AMD don't have funds and don't give a shit, people buy Nvidia anyways, like how the 1050ti outsold the RX570 despite costing the same or more and performs much worse.

You could just use a window AC unit, bits of flexible hosting for dryers, and have it suck air from a coole,r and dispense cold air back into said cooler. Drop the rig inside, and you have a contained loop that'll keep the system super cold. Toss some silicone packets in there to absorb any humidity.

It's not a pad. It's a powder that melts on first time heating up and then increases its size by ~15% before turning solid again. This allows the substance to perfectly fit inbetween the GPU die and the Heatpipes. It's a very good solution and even applying LM will maybe only increase temps by 1-2°C. Not worth it.

I don't think having thermal paste will increase performance. They had to use the graphite pad because the cooler plate doesn't perfectly fit the die because of production variations. The guys at Gamers Nexus replaced it with thermal paste, they noted lower temperatures at the edges of the die but higher ones at the center, as the plate didn't make proper contact with the die in that area with thermal paste. Maybe you are lucky and your cooler plate fits better and sits evenly in the die, in that case thermal paste will be an improvement.

Honestly I think its cover is too restrictive for the air. And BTW I always wondered if there is some very short PCI-E raisers that could move the card just a bit far away from the motherboard, so it can have more space for proper exhaust. That needs some DIY brackets and case modding probably, but sounds doable. I also have an exhaust fan (can't remember 92x92 or 120) attached from the outside of the PCI-brackets area by the cable ties nicely. Always wondered why case manufacturers never thought about adding a fan slot here, because nowdays people use only one or two top slots anyway
