Carving Our Homestead Out Of The Thick Alaskan Bush

  • There is a reason raw or remote land in Alaska is called "the bush". When hiking through it and especially when trying to clear it, it can feel an awful lot like never-ending bushes.
In today's video, we are working on clearing a bit of land where we would like the cabin to go on our new property! We are doing this portion by hand to avoid any equipment creating too perfect of a pad. We would rather the yard around the cabin remain somewhat natural over having just a big piece of gravel around us.
It can be slow going by hand, on top of making decisions on which trees to fall. We don't want to get overzealous but also need to clear anything that could be a danger in the future and obviously anything within the footprint. Part of the problem is that the brush is making it difficult to pinpoint exactly where the cabin footprint will be in the first place.
So, we will slowly but surely keep pushing on! As leaves fall, it gets easier to cut and once the brush is cut then any trees we fall won't be too hard to clean up and stack.
Around next week we should be getting our driveway cut in by a neighbor/local pro! We are very excited to have that be done by someone who truly knows what they're doing and can get us into our "parking space" (a touch before the cabin spot) before winter.
Assuming that all goes smoothly, we will be putting in a connex for some storage before the cabin is done! Somewhere to keep tools out of the weather, snow machines locked up this winter, and then workspace once we're all finished!
We also put up some game cameras to see what may or may not be moving through the land and hopefully get some ideas for the next moose season. Levi and his Dad did not land a moose this year but neither did anyone else we know here. Hopefully, by next year we will know a bit more and be better prepared to fill the freezer.
Thanks as always for watching, we could not do it without our awesome viewers and friends! Levi was glad to be back and did a great job narrating for me as a big "welcome back!"

That's a beautiful burl, I turn bowls so I am very jealous 😊. Very nice property since so much of Alaska is swampy.

I know you want to have a natural yard around the cabin but have a large gravel pad provides a good fire break. Something to think about.

I like to use smaller saws for cutting small trees and limbing and save the bigger saws for big trees. Our previous farm was a very run down and neglected 211 acres and we did a lot of clearing.

Oof that makes me feel better about our 9 acres! We won't be clear cutting but just getting the dead stuff cleared is such a job.
