  • It's finally here! (Less the stain) but it's here! The homestead outhouse has been completed and is ready for our move. Which may be coming sooner than we planned based on the weather forecast. Until we get an unexpected snowstorm.
    We started this outhouse way back in October when we dug the hole before the ground froze. Then we got the cribbing box into the ground while we had the time before snow fell. Now we took winter by the reins and completed the building itself!
    We have to wait until our nighttime temperatures go up to get the stain on the outside and paint on the inside. We will also be matching the outside stain to our log cabin stain so that may wait even through the summer for now.
    Overall, this build took about 4 less-than-full days! With the snowmachine commute from the cabins to the homestead property, Becca tending to Henry, and Levi learning as he went, we definitely didn't get in full days of work. But we got it done!
    We also had a fun long weekend mixed in where we went North to fly with a friend to see his remote cabin. (Henry and Becca stayed behind for the flight.) Then we came back home to find a burl tree for our cabin post! (Full video on that day coming soon.)
    On our way back to the property one of the work days we came across an aggressive cow moose! She was the first moose we've seen show aggression and it got a little hairy on whether or not she was going to charge. Luckily she stopped about 40 yards from us and turned off the road and nothing came of it. We tried to turn around on the snowmachine when she moved in our direction but the sled was too heavy with the burl post in tow. We're very glad she left!
    All in all, we are so glad to have this project done before the cabin package arrives and before Spring truly buds. Levi is working hard on clearing trees at the property while we watch the snowmelt and we are biding our time until logs arrive. We may even get to moving snow out of the cabin footprint so that we can begin on the foundation posts! Stay tuned!!

    Becca, checking your baby's chest to make sure he's breathing is just part of being a mother. Good job on the 'necessary'. Looking forward to the cabin.

    Becca and Levi I just want to tell you how happy it makes your audience that you share your baby with us. There is a homestead channel that does not and I must say it's very disappointing. I do not subscribe to any channel that doesn't share their whole family. Thank you. Your little one is so precious.

    That’s awesome!! I love your expressions Becca 😂 And you most certainly are not the only mom who checks on her kids breathing when they sleep!

    Just a thought take the ashes from your wood stove and you can spread it on the ground to cut down on the amount of slipping , you can pour it out all the way to the outhouse

    Levi if you regularly put lime in your toilet it will not fill up to fast. at my camp i only had a two foot hole since 1997 and it is still doing its job. i have had to level out the crap a couple of times but i do believe the lime is what done the trick for me, granted my toilet was not an every day spot, it was mostly a weekender. halifax Nova Scotia Canada.

    Think all parents check to see if their kid is still breathing, little ones are so silent and peaceful sleepers.

    Don’t know if you thought about it Levi but you could also put you a hole in one of the back corners and run you a pipe up through roof like a porta John as well to help vent the hole and to help with smell. Which is the plan to use sawdust or anything after each use just curious.

    • @beccanlevisalaska
      @beccanlevisalaska  3 місяці тому

      If the window being cracked doesn't do it then we will run pipe out for ventilation. The window was free though! And we plan to use lime to help waste break down.

    Does everyone get homeschools when you’re ’off the grid?’ I know you will be in winter road maintenance so I didn’t know if they had a school or not

    • @beccanlevisalaska
      @beccanlevisalaska  3 місяці тому +1

      We could enroll our kids in a small school about 30 minutes away, but we will be homeschooling when that time comes, and it's a very popular option to homeschool here. But there are schools available! 😁

      It’s becoming popular since Covid here - Long Island. Your homestead looks amazing. Just a tad different than what I’m used to on Long Island lol. But I went to sleepaway camp for 13 summers iupstate in the mountains . Rustic is a nice way to describe it. We had outhouses just like those.

      We are going to put a motion battery light inside and we thought about insulation but without a heat source we decided it wouldn't do us much good.

    Very well done outhouse….but aren’t you going to put styrofoam on the seat? It’s supposed to make it not so cold…..

    • @beccanlevisalaska
      @beccanlevisalaska  3 місяці тому

      Our seat is a "soft" toilet seat that we have seen other people use and it does stay much warmer than the normal hard plastic and it also stays cleaner than a foam one would.

    It will stink. Why not just use a bucket and compost it. Oh well. Each to his own.
