    I personally like how they didn't have the classic, "And everyone decided to keep thier panda." Ending.
    I think it makes a point where the old should not be forced to embrace new ideas, but instead be tolerant when younger generations do.

    • @Miyukazukii

      I wish only 1 other did though to show that sometimes the younger generations new ideas can help the older generation who may have not been given a choice and made a decision to please others. It would have been nice if the one that said "So Mei is keeping her panda?" to respond the the grandmother replying in the positive to say "Well then I want to too!" and stepping out of line but everyone else is just like "suit yourself" and go through. With how little we see the Aunties I think it would be a pleasant surprise to see Mei wasn't ever alone in wanting to keep it but she was the first to break the mold.

      I was curious why none of them didn’t decide to embrace their pandas at the end but what i took from it was that even though Mei Mei decided to keep it, it is still a personal choice and it still takes awhile for older generations to embrace the messier sides of themselves. I also think the mom having her panda in the tomagachi and her being cutesie about feeding is to show her meeting Mei Mei 1/2 way and her trying to accept a little more of her panda.

      I was almost convinced that at least Ming would choose to keep her panda, but it didn't mess up the movie any when she decided to remove it again. My main issue with this whole film was Tyler. I hated him from the very start and it didn't feel good at all when he suddenly became the group's friend just because he likes 4-town.

    I bet that in a year’s time, if Ming breaks that tamagotchi and lets her panda out, it will be a more normal size compared to Mei’s and the other relatives. Ming isn’t annoyed by her panda-gotchi’s needs. She’s really into taking care of it. Loving her panda is loving herself, especially with her daughter’s example to reassure her.

    I don't think that Mei's family are dishonoring their ancestors by deciding to seal their Pandas. In a Modern-day society transforming into a Big Furry Monster every time your emotions get out of control IS INDEED an inconvenience. Being able to transform yourself into a powerful beast it's certainly a blessing in a time of war and constant conflict and danger, but in our times is more like a Curse (Specially in Ming's case).
    And just to clarify.... I'm NOT trying to undermine the message of the movie, I'm just saying that we shouldn't judge Mei's family members too harshly for deciding to seal their Panda Forms.

    Either a sequel where Mei's family HAS to use their panda forms to protect their old home, OR some sort of exploration of Ming's panda powers and Mei's nonchalance with flaunting this weird magic around. I mean...this would not have flown so well in 2022 compared to 2002.

    I like the idea that Mei's mother was a late bloomer, having her 'lotus blossom' later then her sisters. Being late for a momentous occasion could make Mei's grandmother woried as to what could have happened and install a lot of fear and confusion into a child which she probably carried with her for several years before blowing up into a giant.

  • @papapatrick4143
    @papapatrick4143 2 роки тому +50

    The way I see it, the size of the panda depends on both age and emotions, kind of like how the Hulk works. The base form would, overtime, become larger with age, eventually capping at a certain point, say mid to late 30s. But they can get larger sizes depending on how much they've been bottling up their emotions since their last transformation, whether or not their spirit was entangled with the panda spirit at the time. That's why Ming Lee's panda is so large and why the grandma's panda is only about 2* the size of Meilin's panda. Of course, there are exceptions to this such as Sun Yee's panda and Ming Lee's base panda state, but whatever.

      I agree with ages, Mei's father only withness one when he was rejected to marry her by grandmother. I guess the time for transformation begin also depends on when the one hold it believe they are ready to grow up. Mei believe she is adult at 13 so she transform so early and so her size is smallest.

    What I feel is that Ming had three "personas" in the astral realm which show each event she turned into the Mega Panda. Just a theory tho

    When ming tells the story of their ancestor, they show a GIANT panda but when mei sees her she is almost as big as Mei. You can also tell that when ming says goodbye to her panda at the end of the movie, the panda is much smaller, and I think that's because her stress is much smaller. I think that the size of your panda has to do with either your stress (like ming) or WHEN you need it to be big (like the ancestor). It might not be completely accurate because Mei obviously has a lot of stress but her ourbreaks were smaller than her mother's, she (mei) was still gentle. So maybe the panda changes over a big period of time or after a big change in how the person acts (ming was HUGE, but after she learnt to accept her being imperfect, it was MUCH smaller)

It has heart, and the synergy of the friend group made them one of the most believable and pleasant group of friends ever portrayed by Pixar. Not only it has impeccable timing, an imaginative use of lighting and color palettes, incredible attention to detail and characterization of background characters, all its set-ups have pay-offs, and it has powerful emotional beats.

    Another video I've watched on the subject put forth the idea that Ming's form was kaiju-size because of the bottled emotions, but not permanently so. The basic idea is that the image of Sun Yee becoming massive was in fact literal. If something truly deadly threatened her home (such as an entire army), her extreme emotion (probably fear in this case) would allow her to grow larger than usual. They also brought up the fact that in the original storyboards, Mei was also supposed to become kaiju-size when fighting her mom, but they decided the presence of her friends would keep her more grounded.

Remember even though it was big during the fight when Ming walked through the mirror, it was dirasticly smaller then before. I mean it's the biggest in the family but it's not Godzilla size anymore. So hopefully we get to see them embracing their pandas and if they're more worried about their hair turning red, there's always hair dye to make it black and/or add red highlights so show equal love of yourself cause to be honest I don't think Mei's family love themselves like Mei did.

    Supernatural beings living within technological devices sounds like an interesting idea in general, if there's ever a sequel it'd be interesting to see if it's brought up.
    Odd as it sounds the very first thing I thought about when I heard of the Blessing was evolution, that is how certain genetic traits that help a population survive in a specific environment could eventually become challenging to their descendants living in a new one and this seems to be the case here (except that here it's a supernatural blessing in a time of war becoming a "curse" in the modern era).

    I think Ming's panda/ The mother's is broken and cursed like if the emotion is strong she will be huge but if it is not too bad she will be half big panda and if it is weak emotion she is a normal size panda so that is why she said an 'inconvienience' because her curse could be carried on

  • @lumindoesvideos
    @lumindoesvideos 2 роки тому +2

    I feel like bottling emotions has something to do with the panda's size as well. Mei has a very small panda compared to the others and is also the more expressive one in the family. Heck she probably embraced the panda because she didn't want to hide her emotions. I doubt age plays much of a factor in size because the Granny panda is so much smaller than Ming's. Maybe Grandma found a way to deal with her emotions in a not as obvious but not just bottling them up way.
    If her mom was delayed in getting her panda, it's probably from stress and a habit of bottling up emotions. Stress makes people unknowingly do that. And in Ming's case, the bottle finally cracked and everything spilled out all at once, creating such a huge panda.

  • @CakeAcquired

    I thought the movie was really good. One thing that was odd that I noticed was that Mei's Grandmother told her that she could take the panda too far and not be able to turn back, thus why she was reluctant to transform at the party, but then once she did it wasn't brought up again.

    Before I watch this video, I added this comment. I wanted to talk about my theory on why Ming Lee (mei's mom) was such a big panda. I think the panda signifies how much stress said person has. That's why Mei's was the smallest, she got hers early, (said in the movie) so she was younger and had less stress than the other Lee's. I think Ming (Mei's mom) was so stressed out because of her mother, in the end of the movie when we see young Ming crying, she says she "will never be good enough for her." After she says she hurt her mother. But, that's just my theory. Have a good day anyone who read this!

    in this part 12:29 *{not only this part}* sun yee also transformed as a red panda to protect her kids maybe thats why sun yee smiled at mei at their last meeting because sun yee know that mei can use it to protect her love once *{maybe}*
    edit: and maybe sun yee also know how to store the red panda away but didn't did because she know she can use it to protect her love one. Also a question if sun yee IS the ancestor spirit then who is the red panda that she fought { me theory is } maybe its a jealous big sister red panda that want to be the red panda ancestor but didn't became one because the big sister abuse the power and use it at wrong deed while sun yee use it at right deed and became the ancestor of the red panda. Or maybe the liked the same guy and picked sun yee and the big sister got jealous and want to take revenge. BUT again its just a theory

    i love the explanation you figured out and it makes a lot of sense honestly, i'd like to add that i think why the panda gets larger with the emotion is because the blessing might think that they are in more danger and need more protection from the outside world, hence yeah the sheer size of the panda. overall i enjoyed your video and your take on it!!

  • @Alkaris
    @Alkaris 2 роки тому +1

    The size probably determined before they gain the ability to transform into a giant red panda. The more raw pent up emotions the bigger they will be. The entire family has probably had to deal with a lot of hardships, especially Ming who couldn't take all those responsibilities or trying to be _"a good daughter"_ to be _"perfect"_ for her own mother, when it's a lot of generational trauma being dumped on her over her panda, and well... the result is her panda become kaiju sized as a result and hit a tipping point of where it all exploded when Ming's mother didn't approve of Jin.
    Though I do question the fact that when Jin mentions to Mei that she destroyed half the temple, and when you see her actual size, it sounds like she was a lot smaller before, because when you do see her for the first time, she could literally step on the entire temple with one foot.

  • @skurvay3429
    @skurvay3429 2 роки тому

    Nice Theory, it makes sense, but I think that another thing that factors in to Ming's Kaiju Panda is that she didn't have many friends in her childhood like Mei has currently, Ming said she never went to concerts and put her family first, so she might not have even tried to make very many friends as a child, which means she might not have had as much outside-of-family support from others as Mei did to help control her panda, which probably filled her with even more pent-up emotions & stress, and might have made her Panda become much bigger than it was supposed to be.
    Side Note: According to Disney Wiki, only Chen & Ping are Ming's Sisters(G-Ma Wu's Daughters/Mei's Aunts), Helen is actually Ming's Cousin(G-Ma Wu's Niece/Mei's First Cousin once removed), while Lily is Aunt Ping's Daughter which makes her Ming's Niece(G-Ma Wu's Granddaughter/Mei's Older Cousin), but the reason Mei refers to Helen & Lily as Aunties despite being her Cousins is because in some Asian Languages, Older Female family members from separate branches of the main family line that one is a part of are referred to in words that can mean "Aunt"(or even "Old Lady" - like senior citizens depending on how their written or translated), the writers probably went with That due to the fact that the main character's family is Asian, I just wanted to clarify That part.

    I am happy to see Turning Red to be praised and loved by somebody who knows how to review films and cartoons much better than I can. It either came at the worst time or the best time because...the negative reception Turning Red got before it premiered caused me to think everybody assumed the worst of Turning Red because of what happened in 2020 when Netflix had another film about a diverse group of four teenage girls, and I do not fault them for it. However, when I watched Turning Red for the first time...I was amazed at how it exceeded my average expectations from the trailer. We really needed Turning Red to show us how a film with the setup of Cuties could have been good by not sexualizing the kids. I was extra happy with this film because it. Had. *EVERYTHING!* Everything Cuties should have been. Everything Cuties needed to be a good film and did not have. Everything Turning Red needed to be one of Pixar's best films of all time.
    Turning Red's cuties - Mei, Miriam, Priya and Abby - are more fun and less boring to watch than Cuties' cuties because they all have likable personalities and they want to be their own people who rebel against their parents, but do not want to be sexualized. Even when they start crushing on boys, they still keep a sense of childlike innocence. Mei is a good character to watch who remains sympathetic after she gets in trouble with her mom, because she does not do despicable things like taking a picture of her junk or stabbing a boy's hand with a pencil or drowning a girl in a river. The heart of the story of Turning Red comes from the love and support of Mei's cuties helping her control her panda, when Amy's cuties just bullied and teased her for looking different and being bound by her family's cultural traditions. Ming Lee is not seen as the villain for wanting to keep Mei Lee out of sexual situations, and most importantly, Turning Red knew how to criticize the sexualization of minors without making that a primary focus of the story or actively sexualizing its own kid characters. I guess it might have been a secondary focus with Ming's paranoia about the troubles into which Mei was getting herself with her drawings of Devon and going to the 4*Town concert, but Mei still found a way out to reconcile with her mom and grandma and give them a happy ending.
    I love Turning Red almost too much because it is very exemplary for how a woman of color can write and direct a successful movie starring a girl of color, and recreate her childhood experiences without disgusting everyone with sexual situations. That is why I believe we "needed" Turning Red in 2022 to counteract the disaster of Cuties. Surely Turning Red helped Disney+ win over many of the same subscribers Netflix lost. Turning Red may have come at the worst time to easily be compared to Cuties, but it also came at the best time to please nearly everybody who doubted it and solve most of my problems with Cuties, to know that Canada has a filmmaker who knows much better than France on how to make a professional production about her personal childhood experiences without grossing out their entire audience. Turning Red has all of the heart, soul, effort and energy that Cuties does not have. Cuties just makes me feel sad because it has no bouncy energy or innocence to it. Turning Red makes me feel sad and happy because it knew how to make many ages and genders empathize with teenage girls they find to be cringeworthy. February 22, 2023, 4:52pm

    If disney was gonna insult this movie by putting it only on disney+ and not in theaters I wish they would have greenlit it as a 5 or 10 episode series with this level of art. Same story but give it more time to breathe so we can learn more about the mom and friends. Have a deeper look at the intricacies of the blessing(and throw in a bit more c-drama tropes lol). If it had come out as a show marketed as the "first disney-pixar show with movie-grade animation" I bet more people would have eaten it up tbh

    Honestly, I’m glad Meilin decided to keep her red panda. When she tried to let go of it, she realized how much it influenced her life in a positive way. Mei came to accept the red panda as a part of her just like Sun Yee did. It never occurred to me before, but I think I understand why Ming turned into a giant red panda when her talisman cracked. Over the years, she was worried about Mei and very overprotective of her. Ming wanted her daughter to be perfect because didn’t want Mei to make the same mistake she made when she hurt her own mother. Mei drawing pictures of a boy from the drug store was strike one, finding out about Mei’s lower grades and red panda merchandise was strike two, and Mei deciding to keep the red panda was strike three. Ming was filled with so much anger, sadness, and disappointment, that it released her red panda and turned her into an angry giant. A lot of things to ponder, I know. All in all, Turning Red is a great movie. I think that the lesson to be learned from this film is that everyone has an inner beast and that it’s okay to release it on occasion when you feel like you need to. 🐼🐼🐼🐼🐼🐼🐼🐼🐼🐼

    @vixxcelacea2778 2 роки тому

    I think the panda size is the size of the emotional turmoil as a backlog. Ming was and might still somewhat be MASSIVELY distraught over what her mother put her through as a teen and that's honestly probably the bigger reason that their relationship was so damaged and damaging. The grandmother finally makes peace about that at the end.
    If your family is in danger you're terrified, angry, worried and wanting to protect. Sun Yee's panda being as big in the depiction when she fights off the armies makes sense.
    If you are calmer or at least don't have a massive backlog of emotional turmoil, the size might be more proportionate. The aunts sizes correlate to their heights and weights.
    Mei despite a lot of her mothers baggage had so far had a very good and even life. The emotional turmoil was very recent and pretty quickly resolved.
    Also, when Ming goes through the mirror, her panda spirit is still very big, but nowhere near the size of a building when it goes through the other side.
    So I think it's more related to emotional baggage and bottling up of emotions.
    Ming also shows through out the movie that she has some serious hang-ups on certain things and tried too hard to be the model daughter for her mother until she fell in love and that brought out all the negative and strong feelings, which had fed the panda over time to be that size.
    If she had kept the panda or ever lets it out again, we might find the size to actually decrease as she comes to terms with her emotional baggage.

    I agree the movie is amazing, your theory's seem ti fit all the pieces together in the movie.
    I have a little theory to : it think the also the size is caused by self insecurity and they worse they get from the pressure of there parents the more big dangerous and hostile the panda will get when it finally comes out.

    The movie was really cute and explained the (pre)teenage life very nicely. Not in just a girly way either. They explained the mixed up emotions, how it can overpower you and how hard it is to control and explain them it very nicely. Kinda like Inside Out but more on the cutesy side instead of the empathy side.
    My only downside for the movie was how fast it was. I feel like they could've introduced the characters better (especially the Grandma and Aunts) instead of us about 2 minutes to know them then go straight to the problem. It would also be nice if they gave us a little flashback of the problem Ming and her mom had about Mei's dad so we can know the characters and their relationship with each other more and even deeper. Yeah I get it, they don't want to make the movie too long cause then people are going to get bored but, it would be nice if the creators of the movie give us viewers that relatable connection between the characters.
    Other than that, the movie was really cute.

    You are actually exactly right because if it's about the emotion that takes place in the red panda its matters of the size of the motion they have at that point so Ming's red panda is so big because she had that big emotion right then and there and the emotional outrage as you can see she had so much emotion that her capsule of the red panda cracked open and she has now the power to release that red panda so what I'm trying to say is that emotion takes up the size of the red panda

    Cultural/generational themes set aside, I sort of feel like the only one who had an actual valid quality-of-life reason to get rid of their panda was Ming. That thing is LETHAL lol. Imagine having a stressful nightmare, transforming in your sleep, and waking up to realize you've squashed not only your entire house with your family inside, but also like half a block in your neighborhood. Ming's panda/lack of emotional control is a legitimate threat.
    Otherwise? It's weird that not even ONE of her relatives kept their panda. Mei is basically an Avenger in that form. Heights don't kill her, crushing doesn't kill her, head-on collisions don't kill her, and she can basically float/fly by transforming in and out of form mid-air. Sounds like a pretty great middle-aged gift. XDDD
