- Why doesn't Mirabel have a gift? Why DOES Mirabel have a gift?! The Encanto fandom just can't seem to make up its mind on this topic! I've seen theory after theory trying to crack this mystery! And now I guess it's my turn. X) Consider this a big follow up to my We Don't Talk About Bruno video (where I ironically explain why we SHOULD talk about him). Just like in that vid, I'll be bringing up my thoughts on the origins of the magic and the miracle, Abuela Alma's impact on the family, the unexpected roles that Pedro plays in all this and of course where our main girl Mirabel fits into the big picture. Hope you enjoy! ^^
P.S Thank you guys SO MUCH for the insane support from my last video! 3 million views AND TRENDING?! WHAT THE HECK?! Well, seems like we'll be on this Encanto theory train for quite a while. X) And trust me, it's not out of obligation. Still loving the film, still humming the songs, still adoring each Madrigal and still feeling the good Disney feels. It's been theorized that Alma listening to Mirabel magically repaired the cracks because it was a moment of healing in their relationship. Unfortunately, it backfired.
I do like the idea that Mirabel becomes the new keeper of the magic, earning a much more passive 'pseudo-gift' like her Abuela Alma.
However, I don't fall in line with the theory that Casita is Pedro. I believe the magic was born in part from his selfless sacrifice, but it's not him.
The cracks came from the family strain, coming to a head when Mirabel finally called out the dysfunction.
I wouldn't say it's a pseudo-gift, it puts her as the next matriarch of the family.

Very interesting theory! I’m sure Mirabel did get a gift one way or another, but if there is more Encanto content then we should definitely get an answer. Also, I hope Bruno was treated nothing BUT respect when he was welcomed back in the Encanto.

I had joke with my friends that Mirabel’s gift was that she has musical powers and can summon music and make everyone sing as well as being able to look at the camera a freeze time

Thus making mirabel always constantly under pressure trying her best to be like the rest of the family.*
Well yea, but that is a different kind of oppression, a abnormal kind. One that allowed her to see more clearly the bigger problems at hand.
If she was constantly busy working as the valleys musical therapist under immense pressure to do that well, until she Steven universe futures herself. We would not get very far.

The only other person who did not get a gift was abuela Alma, because she is the one who is supposed to be caring for the family.
Honestly, I wish the “Oh My God! Our Uncle/Brother/Son is back after 10 YEARS! Let’s just say ‘oops my bad’ and everything will be hunkie dorrie!” was given more time/development. I mean, sure, Bruno TECHNICALLY didn’t leave, but he just forgives them for shunning him for ages to the point where they basically made him Voldemort, looking down on someone for just saying his name, and acted like it was nothing.
The candle or Casita were never the real source of the magic. The candle was a representation of Pedro's love, and Casita was a representation of family. The real reason Casita exists is because of the unconditional bonds of family.
The cracks start when the family starts to fall apart, with Bruno feeling the pressure to exile himself.
Maribel herself is also the person chosen to save the magic.
Maribel wasn't given a gift as a consequence to Abuela driving Bruno away. It was a warning of what would happen if Abuela continued to push people out of whom didn't conform to her high expectations.
Maribel was left out of the family photo when Antonio gets his powers, and that was the final straw. Casita shows Maribel that the magic was dying because the family was no longer a family.
Casita fully physically crumbles and the magic dies when Maribel confronts Abuela about her love for family being conditional.
Her gift is her natural ability to bring her family together. It’s not magic on it’s own but instead funnels and magnifies the source of the miracle to better run the household then her Abuela.
With her Abuela, her gift is centered around being the protecter of the family while Mirabel’s is the natural evolution of it. The family was struggling, so a miracle came to it’s aid, just as it probably will for generations to to come.
Mirabel protects her family much like her Abuela, just without the high stress and intense desperation she felt due to her trauma. She protects them emotionally, something nobody else with gifts were able to handle. She was perfect for the job, if she had powers then she’d likely be put under that same stress and the house would’ve fell.
I think the candle has a butterfly because the song “Dos Oruguitas” it means “two caterpillars” in Spanish and “aye mariposa” means “oh butterfly” in Spanish

11:00 one thing I loved in the finale is that even when the house was falling apart, casita was still helping everyone.
My theory is that she’s gonna be he next guardian(leader) of the town and casita cause well when she opened the door the magic returned and the casita only cracked whenever Mirabel was sad /angry like right after she sang waiting on a miracle ( I think) the casita cracked cause she was sad and plus she has a good relationship with the casita
Mirabel did actually get a gift, according to close details. You see, everyone's clothes have something to do with their power,
Dolores: Soundwaves Isabela: Flowers Julieta: Herbs etc, but Mirabel has butterflies! In the opening cutscene, we see Mirabel
sitting near the candle with Abuela, but the candle has a butterfly on it, just like Mirabel's dress! The rest of what I am going to say is very complicated and tricky to understand, but you might get it. You see, part pf the candle and the miracle is inside Mirabel, which is why she didn't get a gift. Casita decided that a source of hope was their only last hope, because hope is the keyword! You may not understand, but Casita hid a bit of the candle in a certain human being, (which is Mirabel,) and they thought this would help the family with the certain gifts such as friendship, trust, protection, family, hope and greatness restored so that this would improve the family and they'd all be imperfectly beautiful yet realise that Abuela is only the co-creator and Mirabel is one of the sources of a magical and miraculous candle. Mirabel's gift is being her, and whenever she lost hope, the Casita broke down. Like when she had her argument with Abuela, she was correct, Abuela was ruining the miracle by making it lose hope and slowly die inside, having a break down like Casita, but the truth is, she made part of the miracle die, so Mirabel already has a gift and doesn't need a silly one to replace her powers. so Mirabel is the child and part of Casita, the miracle, and the candle.
When she says she is just as special now, we all know that in reality, she just doesn't realise she is more special than anyone else in the family.

Woah! That's really interesting! My OC Analiza doesn't believe in the candle because she "doesn't need to have powers to be special." The truth is she was chosen by the stars to find the Moonstone, a jewel that reflects the full moon.

If we define a "gift" as a magical ability given to a Madrigal child by the miracle candle on their fifth birthday then no Mirabel didn't receive a gift during the movie, even at the end.

Eh, I think it would’ve ruined the message of the story if Mirabel did get a gift the same way as her other relatives regained theirs.
She does have a Gift though. Much like her Grandmother who also doesn't have a specific power but DOES have a Door. Mirabell is essentially the new Source of the Magic when it used to be her Grandmother.
I believe that the magic originally came from Abuela Alma and that the creation of the candle and the miracle was a response to the trauma that she had just endured. Due to the nature of Alma's desires at the time, the need for refuge and a desire for a good life for her children, the miracle became what it was. The desire for a refuge created the mountain wall and a home that doubled as a nanny for her children. The desire for a better life for her children manifested as the gifts. This line of thinking also explains why the encanto broke down when the family was experiencing emotional turmoil. The encanto's main purpose was to keep the family safe and happy but when the family wasn't happy in spite of what the encanto had given them that little paradox caused the encanto to eventually flicker and die.

My theory is that Mirabel not getting a gift was because she felt unloved and isolated from her family when she touched the doorknob.
She was later able to listen to the house and communicate with the house because she was the one who learned compassion from being treated so coldly.
Encanto is also a story about a scapegoat dealing with the feelings of inadequacy compared to the golden children, and the treatment from a grandmother who has narcissistic traits due to trauma.
Mirabel is lucky, because a lot of children who are in a similar situation to her never get that moment of understanding and subsequent reconciliation with their parents.
Edit: also, all of the children in the family were living up to the image that the grandmother had for them.
That's why Luisa and Isabella are so happy when Mirabel bless them step away from their expected roles.
Edit2: Antonio gets a power because when he touches his doorknob, he feels loved, and like a part of the family.
Which is everything that Mirabel didn't feel when she touched the door knob.
I believe Mirabel's gift was being the center.

I feel Mirabel’s gift is to bless the future generation of madrigals with the candle. I feel this because, she and Abuela are the only ones to really be able to talk to casita. Also, who will bless the future children?? With a gift, there isn’t really a point in blessing the children!! What do you think??

I really hope they do a huge timeskip like 70 years into the future when Maribel is 85 for encan-two if they make another one. Maybe instead of a man vs surrounding plot, they could do a man vs man type deal. With someone trying to destroy the magic.
It makes sense that pedero would turn into a butterfly at the end since the candle had a butterfly symbol on it. There was also a lot of butterfly symbolisms regarding casitas magic.

Also, I thought Antonio’s gift was the father’s way of giving Mirabel and Bruno someone else who could help them.
In my headcannon, she has a room but no gift like abuela alma. In the front of the room, near her door, everyone put a little bit of their gift representation on the door like isabella would put some flowers and etc. . It’s both wholesome and cute :)

The creator said that the casita has one bathroom and that Mirabel wiping her hands isn’t the reason why she wasn’t given a gift. Also Mirabel is extraordinary even without a gift. Why do people care if she actually has one or not?
So I have a theory that Mirabel technically did get a gift, it just didnt work out visibly. I think that she got the gift of time manipulation and the House just couldn't figure out how to display it in the form of a room, so it just didnt create a room. In the movie there's multiple instances where she's stopping/slowing down time and just manipulating time, so it honestly checks out to me

Nah, that was meant to be a non-diegetic moment to express certain emotions visually like a lot of the musical sequences in the story. To think otherwise would mean you'd also have to believe things like Luisa literally fought Cerberus and flew around through the clouds on a donkey unicorn as well. Instead of understanding these moments are more like a fantasy sequence to represent the emotions.

i love this theory it makes sense as Mirabel opens the door restoring the magic essentially the way i see it she is the keeper of the casita as she not only restores the magic and essentially carries pedros magic but notice on her outfit deigns it has a little bit of everything from the other members of the family including butterflies

My theory is that she controls the house and restores the magic. If you see in the movie, she is the only one who controls the house in whole intire movie. And she the only one who is capable of restoring the magic. Which means she can turn off the magic whenever she wants to.

I think that mirabel got like a gift to protect the casita and stop time like when she stops time to sing that song she was able to make roses. Pretty much her door is the house but her room didn’t go in because the house whould be her room and that whould not make sense I think mirabel whould have a gift where if the casita has something wrong with it she should just have to go to the door place before the house crushes down in encanto 2 (if we get one) if the casita crushes down again she whould be able to make a door and a kit of doorknobs all she needs to do is put that doorknob in in the casita is back. She also has a room where she can access every power of the gifts but if she goes out the room she won’t be able to access them and she can access them by stopping time. Since she’s pretty much the protector of the casita she whould not have to work like the orthers. Here’s how it whould go in encanto 2 they will firstly go back to that time where she opened the house door to save the casita but this time she has a gift and when she opens that gift the reality just shuts the room down but her gift is still there and she only knows about it until the end of encanto 2 when she needs to save the casita and everyone sees her gift

Something against the "Pedro=magic theory" thing. I think the magic comes from the family and their needs. The magic came in a moments Alma had filled with grief for someone she loved, and concern for her children. Now that they are safe, Casita runs on their love and bonding. Also, the fact that Casita responds to "Casita" is proof.

I think in this szenario pedro waiting for an innocent openminded character who have the ability to find out the issues of the family. Camilo would be a candidate too, but he gets the shape-shifting, because of his own issue finding out, who he is, but Mirabel have the view for the casita and gave the attention to Pedro's spirit you see when she is greeting the painting of him
Remember, at the end of the animated film, Bruno says, "You're the real gift, kid."
I really love your theories, in fact, I used them as a base to create my own takes because of how much I like them. However, a big difference would be the ending, as I imagine Mirabel won't get a gift, in fact, Antonio would be the last Madrigal to have a gift, leaving the Madrigal family as a legend with strong evidence, yet no way to fully prove was ever real.
I love the concept of magic being a way to heal that, later on, wouldn't be needed, with the family gradually using it less and less and maybe even losing their gifts when they are very old, so I imagine Casita would still be magic for a while, as they still need time to complete the healing process and also there's a civil war, so around the time, they would start to develop healthier habits and think about how they would move on. Around 1960, I think Abuela would definitely want to spend her last days on casita, as she would be aware she wouldn't make it on the new adventure and she would only slow the family down, she just wanted to be close to what reminded her of Pedro and once she passes away, she would also reincarnate as a butterfly, meeting her late husband. At that instant moment, casita would lose its magic, becoming a normal big house, including the rooms, which would become regular ones, except for the door decoration.
The big mountains that protected the town would disappear or become smaller, the family, with some new additions will leave, and they would leave the house for the town to use it for what they need (like maybe an orphanage or something like that).
That intro though LOL
It's one of those things that we may never know.

Pedro being the source of the miracle is a popular theory... but this movie is based on "magical realism" and the according to magical realism the source of is more likely to be the grandmother, her pain, and in particular her fear, both so strong that manifested into never actually explained magic. Magical realism is very much link to tragedy and sadness.

Speculation but I think Bruno could fix the cracks so quickly if his Gift extends to general sand manipulation, and perhaps any crack debris could count as sand grains? That's why he can have a room full of sand, but specifically will need to set up basically a magic circle of sand with candles of incense just to see into the future.

Okay the whole Mirabel wiping her hands on her dress theory made me cackle because I watched Encanto with one of my friends and the whole time of watching the movie we made jokes and just laughed at it all. I noticed the fact that Mirabel wiped her hands on her dress and we laughed when Antonio got his gift like "No No don't wipe your hands, Antonio, don't do it" but I never knew we weren't the only ones to notice that or even take it as an actual theory and that's gonna come back to me mid day and never cease to make me laugh lol
I also think Bruno's vision wasn't that there was two options but that it shows the house with the cracks for when it gets destroyed and then without the cracks for when it was inevitably put back together

My personal belief is that Mirabel did get a gift, but it wasn't some vast super power like the rest of her family. In fact, her gift stems from that fact. It was the gift of a different perspective, an outsider's perspective. Because of her lack of a door and visible powers, her family and especially Alma kept her at arms length compared to the rest and therefore the latter's constant gaze and orders never applied to her. She was the one who saw the cracks that no one else saw and she was the first to understand Bruno as she too was ostracized for something that wasn't her fault.
But what really got me intrigued was through the musical numbers, we see the event on the lyrics play out with Mirabel seeing everything the other characters know; the storms of the wedding, the stampeding riders, even the freeze frame on the family that she's been left out of, letting us see her own perspective as we too are outsiders to the family. And her prediction tablet is literally one of those 'you see things from a different angle' deals.
Mirabel DOES have a Gift, even though she doesn’t have the proof of a magic door to back it up. You can clearly see her Gift in action during all of the musical numbers she witnesses, where she can actualY SEE and EXPERIENCE what it is her family is singing about in full detail. Look at how FREAKED OUT she looks during at every single musical number, like in Luisa’s song, or during the Bruno song where she was physically affected by the ‘hurricane winds’ parts as if she had been at Pepa and Felix’s wedding in person even though it had happened way before she was born.
Then look at the song involving her grandparents. Mirabel was definitely STARING and looking at EVERYTHING that was happening around her as she witnessed what really happened to grandpa all those years ago, as if she had been there to see it in person, just like in the wedding scene, even though it happened over 5 decades before her birth.
The thing is that mirabel’s gift is the whole house because Mirabel is the only one that uses the casita and she didn’t notice

I personally think that the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift is because she didn't have anything to bring to the table. I know, it sounds mean, but think about it. At the start of the movie, Mirabel said "I know you're an animal guy" to Antonio and gave him that teddy. Maybe, because he loved animals, that's what his gift related to. Maybe Isabella liked flowers, Pepa liked the weather, Luisa liked lifting, etc. That would explain why she didn't get a gift- because she didn't have a hobby. I'm probably thinking too much into it and have got it wrong, but it's definitely something to think about.
If Mirabel had a gift I think it would be teleportation or to draw things to life for example: if Mirabel draws a ball of yarn then she will colour it and when she is done the picture will pop out the paper and she has infant papers.

In the end, when someone (i forgot who) passes Mirabel the doorknob, the doorknob has the letter M on it, which is the same doorknob as her own gifting ceremony, which is the symbol that the door of the Casita is her door because in Antonio's ceremony, you can see that his doorknob has the letter A (for Antonio) on it, so the theory that the whole Casita is Mirabel's room is unofficially correct.
And I think the falling roof tile was one of Bruno’s Vision Tiles
