i work at a big electronics store in the Netherlands and yesterday i got an older lady that came to us after she went to the apple store with her macbook pro 2009. her hdd was broken and at the apple store they told her "it's probably the harddrive or the os that is messed up, so you should just buy a new macbook because the cost to repair it would be way too much."
she came to us to see if we had a fix and after seeing that it was just the harddrive, we offered to replace the hdd with a new ssd and that it would work better than before and her eyes just lit up. she was just so extremely happy that we could fix her old macbook.
that is the entire reason i love being in this line of work, that i can make people so happy by just offering an easy service that apple just would not do.
people that say that we want people to break their stuff so that we make money don't understand that i would much rather have a customer that i can help enough so that they never have to come back than a customer that has to come back every week because they keep having problems.
sorry for the rant but i just wanted to share this little story here because you have inspired me alot the last year
keep making amazing videos and keep being the honest, realistic, amazing person you are.
And that customer will tell everyone they know where to go when they have a computer problem. Having a good reputation for not only affordability but expertise and great customer service is worth it's weight in gold.
Still got my 2009 MBP. SSDs really do make old machines fly again. Even have an ancient G4 with a weird PATA/SSD with Morphos on it. (Although I wouldn't suggest that for normal users.)
Were you able to recover the data from the broken drive too?

Louis, my hat is off to you and what you are doing. I am also a component level guy, I don't do it anymore as there is not enough money in it for me and not many businesses do these types of repair anymore. I hate the fact that your business of repairing these consumer products will get slimmer by generations of products getting more integrated. I think Apple may be winning on how to stop repair of their MBPs and you have even admitted to that with the T2 chip and how it is being married to the other components to it and you cannot procure these parts as they have to be "flashed" to this chip. You will be fine for a while as people have MBP's that can still be fixed but when those are gone you will have to come up with another way to do business. I know you are also doing HDD recovery but those mechanical devices are also not long for the world too. I do think you will be able to move with the trends and be ok though as you are a fighter. Apple does not make you the money, your skills and drive are what makes you your money.

I had to puzzle for a bit too.
I used to manage a cellphone repair store. Was very successful at it, I still told people to buy Warranties, use screen protectors and cases. It never caused my business to falter. Honesty is usually rewarded.

Just checked out ELI's channel. All basic Linux, PHP, and Arduino tutorials. These videos are not efficient for the content that he is producing - you WILL learn faster if you read a blog post/technical documentation on this stuff - I promise it's a better/faster vehicle for the information he's trying to disseminate. There's a WEALTH of information out on the internet for this stuff already... which is not true when it comes to specialized repair.
Also we love your business - we love the people in it. We love the videos searching in NY for a new space, we love hearing about the challenges you face with difficult customers, we love hearing about mistakes along the way. I've learned SO much from watching this channel and I'm a software engineer who's barely soldered. There's content here that's on a very different level than "let's teach you how to do a thing!"

Some would call that the shotgun approach. Instead of focusing on what you're good at and working from there always focusing on self-improvement, you're just throwing mud at the wall until it sticks. This is not something someone who has 1 million subs should be doing. All the basic tutorials he's doing have already been done time and time again by people who are both better and worse at doing them. Guy is literally killing horses then beating them once they're dead at this point.

All technicians get to despise the things they maintain , especially when there's no constructive feedback loop from their efforts to the designers of that thing they maintain.
I don’t think he is mentally sound.. the way he flails around is really weird. I don’t understand why he is attacking someone who is dedicating their time to help Apple clients, who have been left out in the cold by Apple and help them save money on inflated repair costs.

@@suzyrottencrotch5132 yes, actually, I am. This man is exhibiting symptoms of what's known as bi-polar disorder. I used to also have the same issues however, I am lucky in that my brain matured and the symptoms subsided. I got myself a degree in psychology so that I could better understand what happened to my brain as I am someone who is always looking to learn new things. I've also been fairly enamoured and fascinated by the human brain. I've been told that this spit between Eli and Louis is all fun and games so it might be that Eli is acting out to try to play to that a little more. Either way, his mannerisms and behaviour fit the bill

Got an urge to give Eli advice on getting professional help. But Louis should handle this.
He reminded me of a friend who got stuck in his "high school" mentality but is an adult now.
Eli does not understand that Louis is trying to help people who actually already bought Apple product get their money worth when they eventually need a repair for it, and will continue to have customers because there is no way that the Apple mania will end soon even if Louis himself (whom, I presume, dreams in macbook motherboard schemes) says in great detail about bad design and practices of Apple.
Louis is the kinda guy who sits down and learns how to repair anything when Apple goes bankrupt eventually. Eli is the kind of guy who gets a nervous breakdown when he gets demoted from a perspective position he was once on, no matter the reason.
Lois is a survivor, Eli seems to be a explosive vest wearing kind of a guy (except he does not have the spine to actually do anything similar and rants about stuff he does not understand without even giving the proper attention to try and actually do that - UNDERSTAND).

Good message, transferable skills are key. I've always had the mindset of think of what the next step will be instead of trying to find the best corner to go sit in and this video is definitely an affirmation of that mindset.

Not a big fan of Eli, hes got some good educational content, but once his personality comes into frame I tend to find what I need elsewhere.
Never really saw the appeal. The videos are two hours long and full of really basic information you could get off of Wikipedia before taking the next step. It felt like first semester trade school stuff, which I suspect it was.

I can’t say enough how rather inspirational you have been to me when it comes to my mental health. Not even just your board repair and knowing I might be able to fix this with all of these little details regardless if it is an Apple board or not. Adapting those skills to another thing so to speak.
Not even your look at what problems are occurring, like with Apple devices...but with all of it, including these talks to wrap it in a nice bow. I find it funny how I say I could be a therapist to some people due to how I can adapt details to a situation, but you are on a level I really wanna get to, which I know I can, but maybe through listen to these more and more, I can adapt what you figure out to my skills.

20:22 - Louis, I found your channel as a direct result of a desperate search for effective ways to work on SMD circuitry without needing to submit requisition for purchase orders of wave soldering machines, FLIRs and the like. By watching and learning from your channel, I have been able to save the university tens of thousands of dollars on boards and the equipment in which they are installed. SMT is so much more ubiquitous now than when i first started in electronics repair.
It was from your content that I've learned about using Ultrasonics to clean corrosion and other contaminants from PCBs as well as using hot air to remove and replace SMDs. I especially liked learning about using diode mode and alcohol to check for shorts.

Yea there is a difference between having subscribers and having followers. lots of people get subscribers that don´t watch their videos but building a following of people that come back and watch video after video is much harder.

I especially like the point about repair shops that just plug in 300 dollar software. as this is something I have seen in person.
I spent 8 months trying to get a computer fixed in my area (Jacksonville NC) and every one wanted to tell me it was the motherboard but not one could tell me WHAT on the board was the problem because plugging in that software was all they new how to do. It turned out the problem was the power supply. and I was able to fix it for 40 bucks not the 200 to 400 they were quoting. and sadly I didn't get the feeling they were dishonest just not skilled. thank you for your ethics and your channel.

1970’s - I was tuned into my Radio Shack 10 in 1 electronic kit...
1983 brought on VCR’s & helping family/friends/neighbors program them (back before it was done on a remote)
... Also working with an over the shoulder Quasar video camera that plugged into a VCR that had a battery pack that would take you to the bottom if you fell into a body of water 😳.
Fast forward to now, where I’m a guy that loves technology, my brain has allowed me to pursue a career in data analytics, still love my soldering, flying my drone & trying to figure out why things work 😊.... Built my first Hackintosh recently for video editing..
