I'm astonished, I've loved this song for 40 years, since Kate Bush covered it as the B-side to her hit Sat In Your Lap. I was always aware it was a Donovan cover but never checked it out till tonight, 40 years later, to find such a gorgeous rendition, and in a film I saw as well, more than 40 years ago, nearer 50 probably. I never realised it was in If It's Tuesday This Must Be Belgium. Wonderful.
@sophiapangloss2149 Kate said Donovan came into the studio and provided some backing vocals. She was tickled pink. In an interview, when asked about cover versions of his music, Kate was the first artist he mentioned.
Not to mention, Donovan doesn't even have to employ it in this song, but his thumb in his finger style guitar playing is just downright unbelievable :)
I feel like I'm right there. Sitting among the beautiful people and sounds. I can smell the candles and incense and smoke and patchouli. I wanna go back ...
I always found this song both beautiful and creepy. A question i always have though, he does not seem to be a regular swan, and she does not seem to be a regular girl. I think the swan realizes he is one of the fairy folk, and over time, he brings the girl to realize that she is one of them too. Once she comes to that awareness, she is able to transform. Such amazing songwriting. Donovan was the first music that really gave me something to hold onto and relate to as a young child.
Donovan was asked and explained what was going on in his head when he sang his songs, like LOTRR for us, which was "I know....you want to hear....THIS". No foolin'!
This song was hidden from the Bard's albums, and covered instead by Mary Hopkin. Donovan and Paul spent time in the studio together in this era. Imagine what a trio Mary, Paul, and Donovan would have made. "Voyage of the Moon" was another hidden gem covered by Mary.
Amazing. Now I must see this film again. (I know someone who worked on it). I read or saw that Donovan wrote this song when they were in India with Maharishi. Must have been shortly before this shoot.
@@theeasybeats5913 He also later appeared on the 1981 Kate Bush cover. Apparently in an interview, when asked about covers, Kate's was the first he mentioned.
Sir Bob, keep in mind that pot back in that say was not nearly as THC saturated as it is now. I have never been much of a pot smoker, but literally, i cannot smoke the stuff that is in the market these days, because it is so potent it feels like a narcotic. It puts me in a bad place where i no longer feel in control of my mind or body.
Not overkill. This is all authentic and how things were. What's overkill is the commercialism and blaring horns of today attempting to create a viable experience.
Preferred early Marc bolan to donavon. Bolan could put an effect on the hippy trippy Tolkien thing that's stopped it being self indulgent. An hour of donavon is like being medicated.

people chilling in a room together, passing around a joint. just listening to donovan. this is my idea of fun.
Donovan is a musical genius. A parallel dimensional soul.
Remember he was making music in the late sixties, they had a little parallel dimensional help in those days if you catch my drift

1969- I was 14 and in love with Donovan.
One of Donovan's greatest...
from the soundtrack to If it's Tuesday this must be Belgium. Genius.

And what a great movie that is! 😊
check out the Mary Hopkins version with Paul McCartney on guitar from 1969
If you haven't already, listen to his studio recording.
My favourite song my Donovan, it’s truly beautiful!
Genuis chord change so hypnotic and haunting!

Lordy!
Wow, so cool to see a high def Donovan playing at the height of his powers.
Been convinced for 50 years that he's of the fay folk, a woodland spirit.
Quite extraordinary and intense in a tranquil sort of way.
Loved this film - it's up on UA-cam. Very romantic and evocative of 1969.
This song is haunted and suddenly you too are in love with a swan
I'll buy that! 😊
Pure Spirit and Deep Beauty.... we have no one today wit this Eloquence.
There is nothing today
Kamala Harris?
UH NO. She has the exact OPPOSITE

They could be passing a regular cigarette I guess!

Gracias Steven Wilson por el gran aporte en Cover version , excelentes joyas.

Lord of the Reedy River is actually on "HMS Donovan", his album from 1971. And yes, what a trio they would have been.
Mary Hopkin had one of the most beautiful female voices I've ever heard.

Beautiful
Wow, love that footage.

Kate Bush brought me here. She released it as a b-side in the early 80's, don't know what the single was now.
Sat in Your Lap it was.
@paulwhitby4752 Kate said Donovan came into the studio and provided some backing vocals.
beautiful, simply beautiful
Best scene, I love this song
He'd very touching and very loving ❤️❣️
Iove him very much!!!
I prefer the sweet Mary Hopkin's version. But Donovan's also sounds great! I'm glad he's one of my Folk idols.
Donovan played on that version

This song sounds pulled out straight out from a pleasure dome

A beautiful song from a bizarre and dismal film.
Jeff, what film was this performance taken from?
