Henk was the original Phanton in the Dutch production and is even rumoured to be Andrew Lloyd Webber his favorite Phantom. Floor saw him in the Dutch production when she was young. She was fangirling over him and got all excited when she heared he was going to be on the show to.

Henk's growl was a nod to Marko Hietala, who sang this with Floor as one of Nightwish's numbers. Marko did it with that growling delivery, and Henk's impression of it was spot on. Floor's reaction to it is just deligtful to watch.

Floor is a Henk fangirl and this was a big deal for her. Henk I believe learnt how to sing in distortion mode specially for this duet with Floor. Others no doubt will correct me and fill you in with all the details on this incredible show from 2019.

no, you pretty much nailed those two statements. Henk is for sure an idol of hers. i have never seen Henk perform as the Phantom on stage, but i would be surprised if he had ever done that before.
Henk especially learned to growl (his first time) for this performance as a surprise for Floor. Henk has played as the Dutch 'phantom' for many years.
Floor once said in an interview, that she has the lungs of a deep sea diver.
She each singer sings songs for each other person on the show. Not a competition but a chance just to appreciate each other. Sounds of silence was from when they sang songs for Floor. Emma Hester sang a song called Strong for Floor. Floor wrote Strong when she was in her band After Forever for her mother, she suffers from really bad rumetism and it was Floor's tribute to her. Emma did a wonderful version for Floor.

Hank does a version of Simon and Garfunkels Sound of silence for Floor when its her turn to sit in the midle of the coutch and the others perform for her. its so so good. as others have told Floor has been a fangirl of Hank since she saw hin the first time in an opera. ( she was 13 years old when that happened. Hank was the Dutch ( the netherlands NOT germany ) Phantom of the opera.

"I don't know how I feel about Opera music yet" - and after this you still won't, because this isn't opera. Very different styles. It's called phantom of the opera because the story is set in an opera house, but the music is very much a theatrical musical.
Sadly, that misconception is rampant in the react community.

Very true, but encouraging wider access to a good performances of Turandot, Rigoletto or La Traviata is difficult. Traditionally, musical theatre has been a bridge between popular and classical music and it appears that, on UA-cam at least, some other forms of crossover musical styles are emerging. I think it's a bit conceited to criticise people for using the term 'opera' when referring to things like musical theatre, just because they haven't been exposed to real opera before.
actually opera is a form of theater where vocal music is the primary means of performance, Its distinct from musical theater as an artistic definition. There is no such thing as "opera music". It is more correct to refer to opera or operatic performance. There is a collection of musical styles and techniques that make up the artistic definition of opera. The singing style of both Floor and Henk, except for when Henk uses the rasp/growl is part of Opera, however Phantom of the Opera is not Opera its musical theater

Phantom of the Opera is actually not Opera but a Musical. And afaik Henk did the growl the first time ever here and he trained it especially for Floor who is a big fan of him.

Since you have children check out Floor singing Frozen it’s from her channel, I hate the original and most people my age, I’m an old Metal Rock head and most grandparents ( and parents)hate the Frozen song because it was played so much over & over again. The show takes 7 singers from different genres of music and put them together in a resort on Ibiza. In every episode one of them is placed central and all 6 others each sing a song that has a meaning for the central placed person. Than can be something he/she did perform or something with a memory to it. Because the singers are all from different genres it is possible that they have to step out their own music style comfort zone or transform a song to their comfort zone. It is no competition but just a gathering to honor each other, sharing stories and bring up memories. The 8th and last episode of the season is the fun duet show. Each singer has to choose one of the others to perform a duet. In this episode Floor did do 2 duets. Henk was the original Phantom in the Dutch version and Floor was a fan of him. Henk agreed to do a duet if he also could do the duet with a Nightwish concert.
Of course of Henk you can find all songs on UA-cam, his most viral one is the Sound of silence.

Henk (hank) is a proffesional opera singer. the growlin part was added by him for fun. Floor had as a little girl a crush for Henk as a singer. this was a golden chance for her to meet him and sing with him.
Henk was the original Phantom in the Netherlands, having performed the role for about 30 years. Floor saw him as a young girl has idolized him ever since. You can imagine how exciting it was for her to sing this with him. His one condition: when Nightwish tours the Netherlands next, Henk gets to sing this with Floor at the concert! I can't wait to see that!

Floor's parents took her to the Phantom when she was 12. Henk was the Phantom. After seeing the musical she decided she wanted to be a singer. That's why Henk is so important to her. Henk was told this by the producers of the show and he decided to honor her with learning distortion.
Sound of silence by Henk is great. He did it especially for Floor. Henk is an opera and musical singer. He was 63 years old at that show. The show has different singers every year. Thank you for this reaction.

That's almost a small rockopera, it has everything, irresistible singing and the firm sound of the band is great, it works perfect. Last but not least, the chemistry between Floor and Henk is great too.

Now time for the Nightwish version where Tarja and Marko does the singing. One of Tarja´s best performances in my opinion, and im not a Tarja fan. But in this one she shines and Marko´s vocals kicks serious butt :D

Henk ( as in the USA Hank) Poort (as in the USA port) is 65 years old and was the Dutch Phantom in the musical. Floor was as a little girl a fan and admired Henk and in this tv-show her dream came true by singing together!

So Henk was one of the seven singers on Beste Zangers with Floor. Each singer has a week when every other singer sings a song that has meaning to them. He sang Sound of Silence to Floor in the style of Disturbed. She sang a rock version of Vilja Lied to Henk in German. By the way Phantom is a musical not an opera although Henk is a trained opera singer. To hear Floor sing opera search for Floor Jansen O Mio Babbino Caro. Floor recently had gal bladder surgery. Check out her performance on the Beste Zangers Eurovision special called Euforia. She was not able to fly to attend so attended from home, singing live to the band on stage. Recovering from surgery and being able to sing like that....she is out of this world! Oh and by the way, all her performances on this Beste Zangers show are worth watching.

Floor is a master of controling the breath and valve modifications.
Just her breath control makes me love this more than the End of an era version, where Tarja lose her breath at the end and has to take a break to make the last note.
I like the "End of an Era" more. Just feels like Tarja carries more weight up there.
I think that was actually not the best performance by her but she's capable of much more. Marko was the absolute star of that song and it's a shame we will never see Floor and Marko sing it. I'm sure that would be special as well.

Henk is from the opera world and Floor is a metal singer. The up tempo is a homage to the metal, Floor's singing is a homage to opera, and then Henk tries metal growling... When Floor sang solo for Henk she did a song from the operette The Merry Widow composed by Franz Lehár: Vilja lied, partly up tempo. Talkin about up tempo, the rock singer Tim Akkerman in that company did one of Floor's songs from Nightwish: He chose Nemo and ceated a very creditable cover

Your wife is right. Floor knows how to use her body to do what she does with her voice.
She was a vocal coach before Nightwish and now, during the pandemia, she has given some masterclasses on youtube. She is an incredible person.
You must check this Beste Zanger´s season: Floor became more known in Nederland and many singers on that stage were known around the world because of her. :D

The music isn't the same in Phantom of the Opera shows. It was done with more metal for this show. Fair warning for the future date night. But if Floor ever did Phantom, I'd go see it too, no matter what the music was
Henk was the Phantom for a few years and was Andrew Lloyd Webbers personal favourite so her knows the source material pretty well. Floor knew of Henk from the Phantom and this was one of her bucket list things to do!!
Andrew Lloyd Webber did not have a personal favorite. And if he did it would have been Michael Crawford.

I cannot find it at present though so I cannot defend my statement but Michael was not mentioned other than as the first Phantom which was significant. He was asked directly who he thought was the best and Henk was his answer.

Henk Poort has been the Dutch phantom on stage for many years. Floor taught him to do vocal fry in a few hours before the show, usually forbidden for classical and opera singers. Now you have to do all the performances from this show. They are all really good. There are also videos with the singers talking before and after the songs which give a little more insight into the performances. The videos are in Dutch with subtitles but are definitely worth watching. Emma Heesters singing (Strong) a song Floor wrote is especially emotional.

Floor recorded this in her home studio because she was not allowed / could not fly yet after her gallbladder operation which she recently had.

Nice reaction. Episode 8 of the Beste Zangers show is the duett episode where the participants choose a partner. Floor chose Henk for this song but then Henk chose Emma Heesters for "Vivo per Lei" and it was just beautiful.
Every year a dutch TV station invites seven professional singers from the Netherlands to this show to sing for each other. It is NOT a competition. A season consists of 8 episodes and 2019 they invited Floor, who was not very well known in the Netherlands back then because metal is not played on the radio there. Only two (Henk and Tim) of the other singers knew her but even they were surprised by what she can do with her voice. All the rest of the cast knew was that she sings in a metal band. Imagine the surprise on their faces when she sang an aria from an opera for Henk.
Each episode of the show is dedicated to one of the participating artists where the others chose a song from their catalog or a song that means a lot to the person in the spotlght on that evening. In episode 4 (Floors evening), Emma brought Floor to tears with her rendition of "Strong" , a song that Floor wrote for her mother who suffers from rheumatism. Henk sang "Sound of silence" (Disturbed version) for Floor. Rolf Sanchez did a great version of "Hotel California" for her. Tim Akkermann sang a sped up rock version of Nightwishs "Nemo" that Floor really enjoyed. There are so many good performances in this season of Beste Zangers, you should really check them all, Floors performances of course (her version of "Shallow" is a must), but also all the other singers. They all did a great job.

Indeed Henk Poort is originally an operasinger, but nowadays he is also very popular in some famous musicals, like the Phantom of the Opera (which is not an opera !) He played the Phantom himself many times in the Dutch version and was one of the favorites of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Other roles of him are Jean Valjean in Les Miserables and Tevje in Fiddler on the Roof. Floor was a big fan of him as a child. She opened the season 2019 of "Beste Zangers" by singing especially for Henk the "Viljalied", from the operette "die Lustige Witwe" (= the Merry Widow) by Franz Lehar. Nice reaction by the way and my compliments to your wife. She knows a lot about good singing and vocal techniques.

Henk Poort is a guest vocalist at Beste Zangers 2019, just like the six others. Floor did know him since her younger years. He is a baritone. He followed a classical singing education at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He won the Cristina Deutekom Competition during his singing training. Poort sang at various European opera houses, such as in Ulm and Krefeld. He has made guest appearances for, for example, De Nederlandse Opera, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Hessische Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, the Nationale Reisopera, the VARA (Opera matinee in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw). Henk was already loved by Floor as the performer of "The Phantom". Hi Tom Henk is 65 and he has played the Phantom. He did the distortion just for Floor on the song Sound of Silence and then this one. The only time he has done it because he is an opera singer. You should check out her UA-cam Channel and some of her Masterclasses. She is a vocal technique nerd and coach. Henk was on tour with Floor on her solo tour.

henk is the original phatom of the opera for man ears in the netherlands.on the couch are singers from netherlands.they cover songs of each other.sometimes songs of another artist.the suprise at this episode of this show was floor jansen.many of the other singers dont know that floor can sing other genres.they know she is a metlal singer.so they was ver surprised by her.performances.

Floors formal voice training was in both classical opera AND musical theatre......plus, being in metal bands her entire career. she got very little radio and mainstream media coverage, but, this got Nightwish, as well as Floor, exposure in her home country.....Henk was 63 at the time
There was a other musical song in this season of de Beste Zangers. In the episode for Henk sings Tim Akkerman, Bringing Home out of the musical Le Misarable it's also a great song to discover musical.

I've loved Floor for almost 20 years now, but if you listen to your wife and watch the Phantom of the Opera (which you should totally do), make sure you listen a version starring Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo as Christine and The Phantom, respectively. Nightwish's version is transposed and Floor hits a D6 instead of the intended E6. I adore Floor with all my heart, but Sierra's voice and performance as Christine is perfection.

I'm a pure heart metal head but seeing Phantom of the Opera musical live was quite an experience.

Beste zangers is a dutch tv show where dutch singers are dropped in a resort and every night one of them is the center of the show. They tell a bit about their lives and their careers and in between the other singers sing songs to that sings that he or she has performed are has a special meaning for them. may I recommend that you try another facet of Nightwish. Check out the same song, sung by Marco and their first female singer Tarja. completely different but as awesome yet for very different reasons. You re going to be amazed. Both of you.
Funfact if you give it a try, it is the very last show Tarja was with Nightwish. There is a second cover at that evening that is worth watching as well: "High Hopes", a cover of Pink Floyd.

The "growl" he puts in this version was his first growl, in honour of floor. He is great at making others sound better as well as himself. A true master.

Loved when Emma Heesters gave the devil horns during the song she later on a different episode sang Floor Jansens song Strong for her since they both had mothers that went through sickness.

Henk agreed to the Tuomas/Nightwish arrangement being used here as a sign of respect to Floor! Henk is famous in The Netherlands for being the Phantom in the Dutch production of the musical.

so another great opera piece with Floor in it and also Simone of Epica is at the Epica Retrospective concert with the Orchestra they perform Stabat Mater Dolorosa together.
