And now you two must listen to Vilja Lied that Floor sang to Henk. The first song she sang on this show and blew everyone away.
It's worth knowing that only one of the other artists really know what Floor does with Nightwish before that song. All the other singers expected your average female rock singer.
Henk Poort is 65 years old. He is an opera and musical singer. He especially did this song for Floor. He did learn to sing with distortion for this show. Floor is a big fan of Henk. Thank you for this reaction.
Henke Poort is like a legend in the Netherlands. Don't think just Opera .. he is famous for musical theater .. he IS the Dutch Phantom after all
Wonderfull Version. Henk (65yo) is extra class and Floor's great role model. He sang this song for Floor. This song is a constant build up and in the end Henk's Rock growling voice is real good for an opera singer. And the rock grasp sound isn't natural to him. He did that for Floor.

To go against 40 years of training and everything you know. Just to try to impress someone you just meet.
I love his face at the end. Looking at Floor "hope that didn't suck". If you watch the whole episode. You see him completely uncomfortable/nervous all night.

@@jamescurfman3284 I hope they don’t pull this video down from YT. Denise helped by putting captions on the episodes so much much more people could enjoy the show. I don’t understand why AvroTros is that protecting/stubborn about the copyright of their programs. It helps the popularity of the program and the participating singers/vocalists. Davina Michelle, Floor Jansen, Andre Hazes Jr., Glennis Grace and several others were put on the map or relaunched their career thanks to ‘Beste Zangers’, same here in Belgium with some singers who performed in ‘Liefde voor Muziek’ (Love for Music, same as Beste Zangers). If you see what effect the program has on the YT reactors and YT watchers, it is immense. Maybe it’s the lack of profits of advertising or maybe they want to sell the concept of the show to other countries, which they did in Europe in about 10 or 12 other countries. But they can generate profits through YT also, and they can use the popularity of the show on YT to sell the rights to other countries. Or they don’t have the rights of the show and they are just ‘leasing’ the idea and they are bound to another company who has the rights. I don’t know what is going on the head of the marketeers of AvroTros.
Fact is that artists/bands can benefit of their popularity on YT if they don’t be an ass about the copyrights. The best examples: Jinjer, Nightwish, Devin Townsend, Arjen Anthony Lucassen with Ayreon and his other side projects, Morissette Amon,….. And that list is absolutely not complete.

This was the first time in his career that Henk added distortion to his singing. He learned to do it and did it just for Floor.
He actually only learned how to put distortion in his singing during the show so he could perform this song.

Yess.. He had a few growl lessons from Floor!
Yeah, and I do appreciate his voice, but he hasn't trained for this. There are many children that are better than him at distortion (honestly, he's pretty bad at it), but all his other skills make up for it to make it a great performance. Specifically on fry though? Not a single good vocal coach would say that Henk does fry super well (even though he's an amazing singer otherwise.)
@@neonman855 I'm pretty sure he'd say himself he doesn't do it well. He only did it for this show, for Floor. He had very little practice at it and he said himself if you tried doing this in the Classical/Opera circles you'd be instantly kicked out the door. Give the man the credit for going outside his comfort zone and doing something different. It's what this show is all about.

Beste Zangers has no US comparison, unfortunately. They gather a group of the best singers in the country, each of different genres. They honor a different singer each week, and the other singers have a week to prepare a song in their honor and perform it for them. The show isn't a competition show, although the singer being honored picks their favorite performance during their week. In episode 1, only one of the other singers knew Floor, so the first time she sang it blew everyone's mind. This episode was to honor Floor.
They have 3 months to prepare their song in fact.
Remember that Floor has been a fan of Henk since she was a child and that he sang this song for her. If u watch the whole series u would see how she was like a fangirl almost especially from the beginning.
Henk was about 62 years old during the Beste Zangers program so he's about 65 now. He is both a classical Opera singer as well as a Musical Theater Singer. During this program he even did a Country Music song and played a little guitar. This is a great TV show and it's a shame that we don't have anything like it in the States. Tom you're doing good here and I love it when you have wifey on as well. Keep up the good work.
Henk let everybody in tears, when he sang Noelia from the same show, it is in Spanisch but its hits you in your hart
henk poort is floors idol and a singer she has allways looked up to her entire life and for her this program was the greatest... also she was know all over the world and is a top singer for years but in the netherlands where she comes from hardly anyone outside of the metal scene knew about her until the "beste zangers"series... now she finaly also gets the recognition over here in the netherlands and people know what a wonderfull singer she is...

I've seen Floor and Henk together in a tour through The Netherlands last year Februari and loved it ,y ou could see very good chemistry between them. They even had the Marcel Fisser band from the beste zangers with them. It was a great experiance . btw like the presantation keep up the good work Ben !!! and greetings from The netherlands.
He did 6 songs in this show, each for one of the other singers who participated. This one was for Floor, for Ruben Annink he sang "Your Man", for Rolf Sanchez "Noelia", for Tim Akkermann "Vincent", for Emma Heesters "Despacito" and for Samantha Steenwijk "Wees zuinig op m'n meissie".

Hey Tom, i told you: .Sarah is mrs. Always Right! She as a singer knows what's coming.. Although, Sarah, Henk learned to growl/grunt in the healthy way, with the false vocal chords. He is singing to Floor because she is sitting next to the host of the show in the center of the couch. It's not a competition but pros singing to each other.
This whole season of the Beste zangers was epic. You should also watch Henk his duet with Emma Heesters. Rolf Sanchez with a latino style of Hotel California, Tim Ackerman singing the Nightwish song Nemo in a rock style. And many more. Your wife may love Les Miserables, if so then put on Tim Ackerman withe the song Breng hem thuis (Bring him home)
Henke is Floors idol , they've toured together in 2019 with the Band that played at Beste Zangers ....theres a great video of them doing a Revamp song " Sweet Curse "
A little bit of the back story of this show. Each week someone has "their night" and the rest of the singers on the couches sing songs that are meaningful for that person. It rotates each week. The 2019 Season (this one) had some amazing songs, and our girl Floor stole the show. Floor is from the Netherlands, and this is a Dutch TV show, but she wasn't all that well known in the Netherlands. This show changed that. In a big way. All of the singers had some excellent songs. This could be a new rabbit hole too. haha. Enjoy. ;-)

Henk (Hendrikus) Poort is a Dutch opera and musical singer as well as an actor. Born: January 20, 1956 (age 65).
Hé is a baritone. He has followed a classical singing education at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He won the Cristina Deutekom Competition during his singing training. Poort sang at various European opera houses, such as in Ulm and Krefeld. He has made guest appearances for, for example, De Nederlandse Opera, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Hessische Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, the Nationale Reisopera, the VARA (Opera matinee in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw).

Ow Henk, you wonderful wonderful man. They all called him Uncle Henk on the show, cause he was the oldest. Such a nice guy. He likes to joke a lot. It kinda looked like Floor and Henk developed some sort of father daughter bond during that season. Floor had been a Henk Poort fan since she was a little girl and saw The Phantom of the Opera. But that look Henk gives her at the end of this song. Awww.

Floor is beautiful because she is beautiful inside and she just is. The world needs more Floor.
Henk told that he was pretty nervous for the first time in many years. Floor had made a huge impression on him - and all the others.
Henk is now a Floor fan like a few others...... and they are actually great friends today. Many of us hope that Floor will do some duets with Henk on her solo stuff - they proved on the extra shows that they are phenomenal together on Floor's old metal songs. And Henk wants to perform any kind of good music (especially with Floor 😉).
This version is at least equal if not better than the Disturbed version - personally I prefer Henk's more rich, warm and mature voice - and he has power!!
Maybe you should try the first song in the season - Floor singing Vilja Lied for Henk - Floor wad almost totally unknown for all the others - and Henk had been going around teasing all the others on how he was looking forward to see them doing opera
All the others faces are priceless and Henk became quiet - and touched (his mother sang Vilja Lied to Henk when he was a child as a lollaby)
This is an amazing series of wonderful performaces by great singers.
You can watch the episodes in order with full subtitles and you will see Floor blow their minds in the first episode where she sings Vilja Lied for henk.

He can reach the tenor range with ease--he had to in order to play the Phantom of the Opera. So he, as a baritone can get quite high!

You’re wife is right about the shoulders and breath technic. The most important tip from Floor to Henk to make a distortion sound was to push less and not more.

Henk Poort was 63 years old when this was recorded. This was the first time he used distortion in his singing. Henk was Floor's teenage hero. You could see the fangirl in her watching Henk. She saw him as a teenager perform the Dutch Phantom. Henk dicovered Floor as he was prepairing for the this programseries and he was impressed by Floor and by Nightwish. To honor Floor and Nightwish he studied on distortion. It took him 2 hours with his vocalcoach to learn it. This song was the first song he practiced it in public. The Phantom with Floor was the second time and to Floor's suprise.

Each of them here will be a guest for the others to sing so they really got to know each other like friends and believe it or not floor was almost unknown in Holland .
Hi Tom and Sarah, it's such fun to watch your reaction, when you were not sure of what was yet to come and I was (!) 😊 This was Henk's special contribution for Floor (he was 63 at the time). My suggestion is that you also check on Floor's special song for Henk. She sang the "Vilja-lied" in German (pronounce 'leed', which means 'song'). Her version is a spectacular mix between opera and metal. You will love it, like everybody does.
With that song, she started off the new season of "Beste Zangers" in 2019. At that time, she still wasn't very well known in her own country (The Netherlands), but with her performances for Henk and all the others, she made a huge impression and now she is Holland's biggest vocal star !
Henk Poort is a great singer. He can sing many styles and he can fix your biljarttable also.
My suggestion is for you to watch the full beste zangers episodes with subtitles as they aired in Dutch
Each episode has a main guest with the other participants singing one of their songs or one inspired by them , worthwhile hearing the background reason for choices
And he do this all sitting down. 😊

Fun fact about Floor and Henk: Henk is the reason Floor is singing today. She saw him in a musical when she was around 7 or 8 and he became her inspiration to take on singing as a career.
In this program (Beste Zangers, or 'Best Singers') a group of Dutch singers pay tribute to each other by performing each others songs (or songs from their genre), where every episode is dedicated to one of the contestants. This video is from a part of episode 4, which is dedicated to Floor.
Another fun fact: the only reason why Floor joined Beste Zangers this season is because Henk was joining too, and with him being her hero, she had to join too.
Absolutely, man. Goes to show just how much talent and hard work it takes to put that rock distortion in your voice. Some people think it's just screaming, but they couldn't be more wrong.

Henk Poort (65) is Floor's Idol, ever since she was a little girl and Henk was playing the Phantom of the opera, she was mad about him, and was even fangirling over the fact that Henk would be in the same season of the show as she was. Henk released this cover in 2019 while Disturbed's cover was released in 2015.
Considering that this is maybe the 2nd or 3rd language that these performers learned, their mastery of the emotion and force behind their covers is masterful.

Henk is idolized by Floor, did you expect anything less? This style of singing goes against all of his vocal training and yet he pulls it off flawlessly. I have always said that Henk should be a member of Nightwish, or at least do some walk-on parts. Awesome reaction! You're getting really good at this 🤗

Henk Poort is of course a professional opera singer. David Draiman also had classical training, as a cantor. Not exactly the same, but a lot of similarity in the techniques.

The intensity Henk brings to everything I've seen of him reminds me of Howard Jones. I've seen in comments that Howard is also a trained opera singer. Both of them seem to have this huge lake of power that shows when singing.

The song Strange Machines was the trigger, but there is so much more (Ayreon, Devin Townsend Project, The gentle Storm, VuuR)... Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation) Simone Simons (Epica) Charlotte Wessels (fmr. Delain) Dianne van Giersbergen (ExLibris) to name a few. We got the best (ok, that is biased) female metal singers, but also a singer that won AGT, a singer that was requested by Lionel Richie and Burt Bacharach etc. etc. And yes it is in the water (heavy metal elements like lead, mercury etc.) ;)

I would recommend watching her complete episode as there are some great songs on it from the other singers. Emma sings one of Floors songs "Strong" for her and Rolf does Hotel California and they have an absolute blast.
