Denam I agree, the AI was basically retarded through my entire walkthrough. There were times where the alien AI just "knew" I was there and the Alien was walking back and forward a corridor that was the only way to advance further. The vents were broken on many occasions, where you would get camped by the Alien and he would just rush you through the molotov making the gadget absolete. Then there was a moment when a human enemy would stand still 3 m. away from the Alien and they would just look at eachother... It all came down to sorta good and accurate graphics in the end and some occasional intense moments. IMO it had the potential but couldnt deliver.
@@Ponaru well most pc gamers talk constantly either about the graphics or the fps. It's because many invest a huge amount of money into a pc and then they expect the best graphics possible. It's because of that that more and more companies put graphics on the first place.
@@mytop3467 I agree with you partially. Many of us do invest in more expensive PCs so that we can play games at higher framerates and with higher settings, although consol gamers are also partially responsible for this "make the game pretty" movement because prettier games sell better there too. However, this advantage applies more to multiplatform titles where the game is identical across the different platforms, so it would make sense that we would want to play them better since we have the power to do so. However I think many PC gamers tend to play a good variety of games that don't necessarily look great simply because the gaming experience is generally better on PC. Smooth framerates, the choice of controller/input device and mod support being among the main reasons.
@@iamoctonate how comes the so many pc players ignore this fact? You will even find some that say "we are the saviours of the game industry". Insane shit I tell you.
@VOLD GAMER yeah me neither I mean I don't want it to look like garbage but give me a good story if it is story you know? Just make the game whatever genre it is good and I wont care about graphics but not really really bad graphics
I thought in the beginning when he was sweeping pages in the bible he would stop at the ten commandments and read ''you shall not kill' and be like oh shit
He played himself(saw other joe playing at least 2.5 hours of it) actually very little of the full game as at least a we saw on the full playthrough on twitch. an did so while intoxicated that killed the experience. Not impressed at all.
Honestly, I think it would have been interesting if the majority of the game took place inside the school. Part of the reason I think that the first Outlast was so good was because you were in an insane asylum: a place that unsettling by nature. That's something that that the desert of Arizona cannot capture. Why do I say the school primarily? Well, schools after dark, if you ever been in one, is also a very eerie place to be. I'm so used to schools being full of life that seeing an empty school hallway borders on disturbing. Another reason I think Outlast was so good was simply the fact that Miles Upshur (Outlast 1 protagonist) is at the location to "investigate" meaning he has a reason to press on. Blake (Outlast 2 protagonist) on the other hand just wants to get himself and his wife out. Miles wants to get in, Blake wants to get out. Miles cares about uncovering what the hell is going on, Blake doesn't care. Miles has a reason for only being armed with a camera (that being to get every last bit of evidence he can) while Blake has no reason to only use his camera. On top of this, I found Miles to be relatable in a sense. Keep in mind, Outlast was my first horror experience where I completely finished the game. I started the game very afraid however as the game went on, I became "desensitized" so to speak. Miles was very similar, he started the game panicking at a lot of stuff (proven by a combination of his heavy breathing and his thoughts he writes down when recording certain events) but near the end a lot of stuff didn't phase him anymore (he no longer breathes like he's panicking and his written down thoughts is a completely different tone.) You just don't get better than this, I think.
his journal practically showcases what he feels when the game's occuring. also, he closes doors very agressively and loudly while waylon in the dlc closes it carefully so as to not attract anyone
On your comment on Miles motivation. It reminds me how Blake and Waylon share a similar motive, which is to escape. I think the one thing that can justify Waylon's situation is that the patients in Outlast are much more stringer than him, which we know could be the case since it's shown in the initial game with Chris, the twins, and Trager (maybe some varients to some extent.) Not sure about Outlast 2 100% Maybe Marta, Val and Nick could beat Blake in a fight but the rest doesn't make sense. Especially the Scalled.
This comment deserves more likes - this is exactly what I was thinking too. The open environment is beautiful but because of the linear structure of the game - that openness amounts to nothing. Hell - within outlasts 1 I found it awful to be stuck in the dark, with barely any batteries left and running out of time... In this - its too dark all the time. The dark, restrictive environment is constantly acting against itself imo.
As a teacher's kid I've visited school after hours and it was a strange place then. Offices and warehouses are also eerie. I've worked security, and those places are strange mazes at night.
Man I took like a 2 year break from Joe. It's amazing to see that he still gets millions of views and has the support. It literally shows me the grind and determination in doing something you enjoy doing and making something of it. The guy started YEARS ago and IMO was waaay more hilarious (not that he isn't now, because this is gold, the intro XD) and from there just took off. Props Joe keep it up.
I believe Joe gave this score because the game's suspension of disbelief is bad: There are tons of "usable and/or weaponizable things" around, the game doesn't let the player use them. Cameras don't need batteries every 10 minutes. An able man cannot be held down by a malnourished one armed guy. And you cannot see a crouching man in the middle of the night 10 kilometres away without having dog vision. Add bad checkpoint system, one hit kills and more, of course it would feel unfair. Also, the bit at 17:15 is plain funny. The same thing can happen in RE7 but in that case, Jack would just destroy the obstacle and continue to pursue you. Little details like this matter, especially in horror games where you need the player engaged the most compared to the other genres...
I know I laughed so hard when OJ grabbed the battery that was on the Bible. Lol. I spend most of the game screaming "GET THE BATTERY! GET THE BATTERY! Lol.
In the ending, Blake's shadow isn't holding the baby, hence why Lynn says that there's nothing there, the constant white blasts throughout the gameplay are from emp/microwave tests run by the unethical Murkoff Corp. these tests are what caused everyone to go batshit crazy and Blake is also being affected. This can also be proven at the fact that Simon Knoth saw the baby as well before killing himself. Still a worthless ending if you don't know the plot well and they're definitely trying to get you to buy dlc.
driftracerr34 ever played dark souls?u need to piece it together yself and same goes for this game.its not bad story telling.its different story telling
"You run from your enemies......to then run from you enaninies.....to then run from you enemies" LMAO!!!! I like how Joe doesn't care about slip ups. He just keeps shit going haha
Outlast and Whistleblower were soooo much better. EDIT: People who are responding to me 2 years after this post or more; my opinion on a lot of things has changed in these 2 years, including my opinion on Outlast 2. I'd still definitely say that Outlast and Whistleblower are better games, but I now think that Outlast 2 is actually a pretty good game. So, I'll update everyone on my opinion in another 2 years, see how it's changed.
When I died over and over again at the same place, here was my expression. Died once - panic Died twice - okay...okay...I can do this. Died for the third time - What the...? Really? **Disbelieved** Died for the fourth time - F*** this shit. Died for the fifth time - **Eyes half shuts and silent moment**. **Bored** Yeah, I died five times and I am noob but I don't give a shit.
I think the appeal of the first outlast was magnified by it's setting. Spending nearly the entire game indoors, with little snippets of outside in a game where getting out it your objective 75% of the time naturally adds to the terror. You are driven forward through all the horrors you face by sheer desperation.
So agreed! And the short time spent outdoors was enough for me to have it feel really /wrong/ like you have nowhere to hide even if it's less claustrophobic, but to have a whole game like that was far too much.
Really disappointing but im hoping red barrels learns from their mistakes and finally figures out that 7 hours of chase scenes are not that fun. It's just a cheap way to label the game as a horror without delving into any other horror themes with the exception of unnecessary gross out gore
Alien: Isolation remains the perfect hybrid of Outlast gameplay elements (with smarter AI) and RE style survival horror. Alien: Isolation has aged like fine wine compared to most other survival horror games. It might even join the ranks of REmaster and RE2, imo.
alien isolation is a fantastic game. BUT.IT.ISNT.SCARY. i always see guys like you comparing it to games like amnesia and outlast, it may be survival horror and one of my favourite games EVER. but its not scary in any way shape or form.
how can it be one of your favorite games ever and not think of it as scary or at least tense? the whole point of the game is to be scary, that's like saying madden is a great game but a bad football game
WarlordRising , Alien: Isolation is freaking great. My heart beat elevates and my hands shake whenever the xenomorph starts making the detector beep. XD. That's the mark of a good horror game.
Krzysztof Dolecki mate chill out, it was funny at the beginning. I wasn't commenting on his grammar just wanted point it out because it was funny to me. Jeesh
Oh there is no doubt Outlast 2 is far inferior to the first one and Whistle Blower. As Joe said gameplay is more polished but more poorly implemented, check point system sucks, and the narrative is so much lesser than the previous game. Though if I really had to pick one thing that pissed me off about the game... its the fucking lack luster villains! FFS how could they fuck it up so bad?! Outlast had a huge range of strange and interesting major villains that you had to deal with in both the initial game and its DLC. I mean I can still tell you Chris Walkers name. I can't name a single "major" villain in this game, aside from Knoth and thats only because they wouldn't stop saying is fucking name every five seconds, and have it written in every fucking collectable page, not because you know... he was actually interesting or anything. Seriously the major villains in this game are: religious fanatic #1. religious fanatic #2, religious fanatic #3 and Knoth who is never actually a threat to you. They all do the same thing, wander around absently spouting verses from their bible, ITS FUCKING BORING! Theres no diversity! And in the followup to the original that had a A war-scared PTSD tank of man who is misguidedly trying to actually help the situation, a deranged pretend doctor that cuts your fingers off after pretending to save you, murderous twins that deliberately set up ambushes, a priest that worships a machine as a god, a swam of sentient nano bots and its just no comparison. Even some of minor characters are more interesting, like the arsonist that was trying to kill himself as well as destroy the asylum because of their fucked up experiments on the inmates. And thats not even counting the additional ones in Whistle Blower... seriously poor show Outlast 2... poor fucking show. 4/10
@@Kyochi12 She was supposed to be Outlast 2's version of Chris Walker but she just disappears after the slaughterhouse, UNTIL she just comes out of nowhere near the end of the game. Plus Chris was ten times more intimidating, more interesting and had a much better lore than Marta.
Tbh, this game was more frustrating than scary. I can't recall many times that I truly felt scared when I played it. However, I can recall numerous times where I was so pissed off that I just quit out of anger.
g00fballgaming I finally just deleted it today. way too frustrating and annoying. Not scary at all just a real pain to play. I'll pass on the dlc. I was tired of running and the enemies finding me in complete darkness
Watching the gameplays I noticed that Outlast 1 is waaaaaayyy better. It's so scary to play. I think that it's scarier to run from PEOPLE that suffered tests (like the doc) than it is to run from those tree guys, they look like little monsters and if you have tons following you .. not scary at all
The main thing that was a disappointment for me with this game for me was the gameplay. The first game had claustrophobic environments and there was a lot of hiding to let enemies pass, then you could move past. It was tense. You would occasionally get caught and be chased which was scary. You’d end up either finding a place to hide and survive or occasionally but not very often get caught and die. Outlast 2 is mostly outdoors and appears open ended but its actually just as linear. You end up getting lost during chase sequences because a lot of the ways you try to go end up being dead ends. This caused you to die over and over and the game just became trial and error. It didn’t allow you to think through any situation or problem. That was the main thing that took the majority of the scariness out of the game for me.
Before I played Outlast 2, I was surprised that Joe was disappointed with it. When I got to play the game, I realized that Joe was right about everything. I feel the same way about this colossal let down. Two years of waiting for wasted potential.
@Matt White first one was better cuz it was visible what was happening,1st one also terrifying but second one is full dark and u dont know where to run,its not horror game but a frustating running simulator
I have to agree with Angry Joe here completely. Everything he said was spot-on. This is what I said from the moment I started Outlast 2 gameplay. The first one was better, and I could not see the high praise that this game was getting. Please do not misunderstand me. Outlast 2 is not a bad game, but it is just not as original/creative or immersive as the first one. They really should have had it take place entirely in the school. That was the closest to the first Outlast game that this second game got. Even the DLC for Outlast was more Outlast 2 than Outlast 2 was. Then there are the cheat codes some of the threats of this game have where they are basically all-knowing, as if a main character that can't fight back, or even block, and gets killed after like two hits already didn't give the threats enough of an advantage as is.
the thing is outlast was just as repetative you also too just went from location to location running from trager, or chris walker, or billy, or the naked twins, doing the same objectives like switching pumps on. The difference was entirely the story and the setting of the insane asylum and the wtty remarks you would make in your notes and the documents actually provided information not just passages of a rambling holy zealot. the story was everything that made outlast good but when you take that away it was exactly the same repetative shit outlast 2 has done which is why i don't get how that is a valid argument from joe or anyone else.
Gabriel Crosley To me, no wallrider, no Miles and or Waylon = instant dislike. And they dared to call this a direct sequel, fuck Red Barrels for lying.
"Good graphics dont make a good game" If only more people understood this, but nope, as long as it looks good, who the fuck cares about gameplay and content am I right ?
+Sean Genovese The really vocal people care more about graphics. Since that's mainly what they hear about, that's what devs think gamers feel is important.
if people really care about quality gameplay then horizon, until dawn or uncharted 4 wouldnt have made money, those shit are generic and stale as it can be.
I guess I can't really argue with that. I liked Horizon and Until Dawn, but they both only interested me for as long as the rental place allowed. I doubt I'll rent either one again.
Whoa! Joe! You can branch out! And play... a non-linear path. Guess what we gotta do? We can either outrun the enemies... or outrun the enemies... or guess what---*OUTRUN THE FUCKING ENEMIES!* *GODZILLA IS APPROACHING THE GENEREATAH!*
outlast 2 was a let down to me as well...making the map less linear actually destroyed the horror feel...afterall you cant be scared if you keep repeating a certain sequence over and over again just because you dont know where to go...
Dusan Zdravkovic Sorry , but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. This one so damn story driven you couldn't ask for more. Stepping into the school is too damn terrifying. At times I caught myself pleading to not ever go back to the school because of how horrific it is. Bugs and glitches I have yet to experience, but this actually tops the original outlast, but not whistleblower.

TRX Gaming Some people scare easier than others. You are likely one of them. He also didn't say it wasn't story driven, he said it was less interesting than the first one.
I really liked Outlast II, it scared the shit out of me, and had great atmosphere and lore. There were a LOT of problems and the ending was pretty bad, but it also had some great psychological horror and panicky chases. I just feel like this was a pretty mixed experience.
@@rockybalboa4593 siren was easy as hell, both the American and Japanese versions. Same with Silent hill. Fatal Frame was ok, wish it was a bit harder.
Joe has a point with the tools / weapons. But what gets me even more is there are several places that have flashlights laying on tables next to batteries. Why would the character NOT pick up a flash light? He's willing to pick up batteries and bandages. And a way to fit it into the story and make it *scary* would be maybe when the batteries die the character drops it on the ground, so you have to wait until you find another flash light on a table somewhere. Or make the light beam not very bright, or a narrow beam. Anyway, /rant
Tekie Wolf because the camera allows him to see In the dark. while not giving away his position... also why would you wanna play outlast with a flash light? then itd be like every other horror game, night vision is basically what makes the game unique.
Tekie Wolf well if I'm hiding from a bunch of murderous psychopaths and I had to either a flashlight that gives me away, or a camera that allows me to see in the dark without revealing myself, I think I might go with the camera
maybe you are right. like maybe the flashlights could work like 1 battery's worth and it never works until you find another one or you can just use your camara
Tekie Wolf Simple. Flashlights consume less battery and has better brightness at wherever you are pointing it at but enemies will easily detect where you are. So you, as a player, have to choose between saving battery but risking being found with the flashlight or using up battery but better sneaking with the night vision. That will change up the game. Heck, they can then make one or two levels that force you to use one over the other.
Outlast one was one of my favorite modern horror games. Outlast 2 I couldn’t even finish. I liked the school sections as well but the woodsy sections were just sooooo boring. That setting is so outplayed in horror games
"Good graphic doesn't automatically make a good game" Since late 90s some 'gamers' play solely for graphic. Maybe that's why the scoring is polarized. Sure I don't understand the bunch, as if they can eat (and shout "this should be on Michelin Guide") pile of poop as long as it is visually appeasing.
Outlast 1 was set in more close environments, making the chases more tense, and hiding more effective. Outlast 2 is set in more open environments, making running more reliable than hiding. Anyone agree?
They changed the running mechanic so Blake gets tired after sprinting a short distance. Running in the original Outlast was actually really reliable because you were faster than all enemies and could run forever.
No because it shows multiple reviews from many different sources, so by that logic you should blame a website for posting other peoples thoughts dumbass. But yeah there are other review sites like meta critic but I wouldn't say they are more reliable
Metacritic is just a collation of reviews from multiple reviewers, which is then standardised. I agree that it's all over the place, but only because individual reviewers are all over the place. It's still the most efficient way of looking at what people are saying about a game.
SPOILER ABOUT END: Ok so if you did not get the ending, well, thats prob cuz u dont know enough about outlast one. Weird ass experiments by murkoff, a bunch of bad scientists, were happening The WHOLE village is an experiment, the creepy notes about mircowaves and tech are not villager rantings, those are notes from the scientists. Anyway, back in outlast one, there is a note about a device called the morphogenic engine that said that women exposed to the device were hallucinating, thinking they were pregnant. All these false pregnancies resulted in death. This is the case of Lynn. She did not give birth to a child. She was telling the truth when she said "there is no one there". Blake had lynns guts in his hands. Thats why the pregnancy hurt too much and was fatal. Blake and Knoth saw a baby because there were both so brainwashed. At the end, when the sun exploded, that was a real bomb that killed blake. Which is why the game ends w a child blake, playing w a dead jessica, and blake doesnt wake up from the dream anymore. This bomb is how murkoff destroys the evidence. They had prob gathered enough data and wanted to move elsewhere. Its just a tragedy about how blake and lynn accidentally wander into a mad scientist evil experiment and get completely fucked and killed.
i copy pasted this from some other video but i think it makes sense and actually i feel like if joe reads this he will increase the games rating to like an 8 or at least 7
Outlast seems to like killing off the main character at the end if the game. I hope they don't make that the norm for them because that just sucks. What's the point if you just always die in the end? I think that's one of the reasons why Whistle-blower went so well. You didn't die.
What if the explosion in the end was the radio/microwave tower exploding and in the DLC we play some Murkoff scientist that brings down the operation and actually saves Blake from going mad? Just a thought
in other words, its the story about a pointless temporary survival, that, has the same ending as if you had been killed by the first challenge in the game. its no diferent from the "run from the creature to die from a fall", kind of crap people hate in so many games. just answer this, does he actually achieve anything?
Well, does Joe ever change his rating? And is there a point to? And factor in the gameplay flaws he noted. I agree, this entry had more running than stealth. A lot of the ways to hide seem arbitrarily placed at times, like the locker in the mines. You only need to hide under one bed in the entire game. When you know where to go, you don't need to hide barely at all. The challenge felt cheap and besides a few jump scares, I only got the heebie jeebies in the school sections which were a lot like the first game. The glam was brilliant, especially the blood shower in the final section before the mine. But the meat just didn't have that flavor. I enjoyed the game more than Joe did, but I get a lot of his points. In the end, it's an opinion of a gamer, not a scholar. We all know why we watch Joe or any game critic that adds some comedy skits on the side. Much like why this game isn't "pointless temporary survival". It's the journey that matters. You can't just say, "Oh, it was all for nothing because you died." Like all things in life, it's the experience that carries weight. It's the content that Joe produces that carry weight, not a number at the end of it.
I like this game, but even I know it's extremely frustrating at times. You make really good points Joe. A game will give different people different experiences.
These devs are making serious mistakes on their game design. They can't design the game around popular Let's players' preference and neglecting your bread and butter--the paying mass. Tailoring your game for gaming celebrities at the expense of average gamers has caused the downfall of many good franchises in the past and continuing.
Osama Bin Laden me too I mean I did die a lot but that was part of the fun I had problems where I didn't know where to go sometimes but I still liked it. However outlast 1 and whistleblower where better.
Osama Bin Laden totally homie, I think maybe since I literally just finished the game yesterday I played a more updated version but it was still good. I 100% agree with Joe that the first one was way scarier (whistleblower is the scariest imo I was shaking during the Eddie gluskin scene) but I was scared a fair amount in 2 I liked that the ending was sad in that Blake completely lost his mind. My personal score for it is an 8/10.
A major problem a lot of people seem to have is finding the correct route. The thing is, there is almost always some indicator for the path. Light and blood play major roles as markers, such as bloody handprints and smears on climbable rock faces or outdoor lights above doorways for progression. They're easy to miss due to stress, but an observant person will find the path pretty clearly marked.
Xanthis Arljan Exactly, it kills me when let's players are too busy screaming and talking and end up missing so many things. SO many missed batteries out in the open sooooo many.
The reason the school portions of the game are so much better is because it mimics the environments and the gameplay from Outlast 1. More linear in nature and only 1 threat at a time. This combination results in less trial and error and more enjoyment/progression. Plus, the school sections dealt with supernatural stuff which mean more creepy and unpredictability. (because entities are unpredictable). These sections of the game achieve all of this all while being more interesting (in my opinion) and with many lights on! The music is creepier too which really helps set the tone and the atmosphere. It's almost like there were 2 development teams 1 for the school and 1 for the religious fanatics/crazies and they just decided to sandwich the 2 together but it doesn't work and it's clear that the school stuff was way better. They should have made 1 great game but instead they made half a great game and half a shit game and no glue/cohesion to bring them together which resulted in a crappier overall package.
I love the first outlast. The school section is nothing like that. You keep wandering in the same location. You can’t explore anything because the doors are locked. The school is big and empty. There’s nothing interesting and complex about that childhood story. They couldve told it in 5 minutes. Instead red barrels waste players’ time by making them think there’s some unique twist.
read this comment you scrub if you know the story and why the ending was the way it was it's actually a pretty incredible ending. the story is given to you on the first and you're supposed to remember what you learned from the documents in the first to understand the 2nd. Check out the explanation you might like it.
read this comment you scrub if you really read them all then what's it about ? How does it relate to the first outlast? Or are you just agreeing with everyone else ? Lol story was great. It's not suppose to make complete sense but the funny thing is that it does make sense and people rather just take everyone's word for it instead of sitting down and actually thinking about it. Put the piece together from the first outlast and all the notes and recordings from 2.
read this comment you scrub Actually, the emphasis was more on psychological horror rather than physical horror, with the latter being more specialized in the first game. If you watched the playthrough and had seen and heard all of the narrating Blake did, along with the school scenes where you filmed the unreal portions of the school itself, you realize that Blake is becoming about as crazy as the hillbillies and even the Variants in the first game. There's not even any indication that the final events of the game were even real. The final sun explosion was Blake's point of insanity - not that he wasn't on the brink of it to begin with.
This game failed to evolve the original's formula, something that Alien Isolation and Resident Evil 7 did, thus it deserves to be received as a lesser game.
RE7 didn't look very good to me. The beginning looks pretty fun, but overly scripted; then it falls apart near the middle with boring fetch-quest gameplay. I haven't played it, but I've watched a playthrough, so from that I'd say it's a 6/10 game in my opinion.
I'll take eddie gluskin over father knoth any day. I dont think Outlast II was bad but it certainly wasn't as good as the first, which scared me no matter how many times I saw it. Outlast II barely held my attention, really overhyped and under delivered.
It's weird seeing all the Outlast fans that are super defensive over this review. Instead of taking it as a "different opinion", they have to go through a list of bullet points to "dismiss" or "de-legitimate" someone else's opinion. Let's see what the typical responses are: * He gave Suicide Squad a good review (a film, not a game) - so hur dur, why should anyone take his opinion seriously. Had he given Outlast 2 a 10/10, would you be making that same comment? Also what does him giving a film a review, have anything to do with a game. Not to mention, Joe made it pretty clear that he didnt think Suicide Squad was a technical masterpiece of film cinema. He said as a dumb action film, he really enjoyed it. While I don't agree with him (I hated the film, and didn't enjoy it either) - why is everyone jumping down his throat, when the majority of "professional film critics" gave Ghostbusters a 82% or above? Joe's not even a film critic, and yet supposed film critics, gave one of the worst films in the last 10 years, an 82% or greater rating. But yeah, he enjoyed Suicide Squad (IMO it was better than Ghostbusters reboot, thought that isn't saying much). * Joe didn't like it, because he sucked at the game. One of the lamest deflections, since it ignores all the criticisms he has for the game, that has nothing to do with skill level. People are cherry picking what they want, and then ignoring everything else. I keep seeing people say "well the first game had trial and error, so his points are invalid". Yeah, no shit. That isn't issue. It's the fact that it's trial and error + the rate of trial and error in this game (instant deaths for things you didn't do wrong) - is what makes it a problem. It's the fact that in some areas, you have to reload 5-6 times, because you die in ways that no one could possibly have avoided (except through luck). * People complain about games being too easy, but then they whine when something is too hard. This like the above point, is cherry picking, and ignoring the greater context. The issue with Outlast 2 is not difficulty. It's the kind of difficulty. Difficulty as a result of poor game design, is not good. Difficulty, because the devs make the game unfair and not balanced, is not good. There is a reason so many people love the Dark Souls / Bloodborne games, or even Nioh. Those are games with incredible game design, where the difficulty comes from needing skill and patience. Where it requires learning the mechanics of the game, and adapting. Outlast 2 does not have mechanics that you can adapt to. It's literally the lowest common denominator of trial and error, with instant deaths for things you can't know. Almost all the deaths in Dark Souls, can be avoided. Or the game gives you a chance to react, and "recover" from a situation. Outlast 2 has instant death sections, where you can't react, you can't use skills, you are not given a chance to get out of the situation. There is a clear difference between difficulty because of excellent game design, and difficulty because the game is stacked against you. And when there is areas in Dark Souls that requires some trial and error, it's usually a one time thing, where the game teaches you a lesson, and you learn from it (and those kind of moments are spread out). If you don't agree with Joe, that is totally fine. There are aspects of his review, that I don't entirely agree with (having beat Outlast 2 myself). But I'm not going to dismiss his views, and say they are invalid. What really annoys me, is the amount of people not only dismissing his views through a bunch of arbitrary bullshit (he liked Suicide Squad, therefore his views on games are no longer valid) - it's the fact that people are cherry picking, and absolutely ignoring the context with which his criticisms stand on. And for what reason? Why? Do you really love this game that much, that you feel the need to defend it's honor, when someone doesn't like it? I again say, had he given this a 10/10, would most of you be dismissing his views? Probably not.

The school sections were the best in the game and I think without them this game would've been trash. (SPOILERS) The ending is still trash even with all the notes revealing that everyone was just crazy from a large scale Murkcoff experiment. It's super poorly presented and you can only obtain this part of the story in the notes through multiple playthroughs or keeping your eyes glued to a walk through which ruins a gaming experience if you ask me. I remember The Evil Within did the same thing, the main character, Sebastians past was told through the notes, which was very lazy considering how important it was to know Seb's wife later on dlc. Outlast could've told a better story through notes and collectables but it's atmosphere makes it nearly impossible to do on a first playthrough, which for how unsatisfying the ending is is essential. Outlast 2 for me is a good game but it moved away from what made the first one good.
(SPOILERS) What I think could've fixed all this was giving us an option to kill the baby in the ending. Blake's effort to resist the mind control done by Murkcoff. Upon killing the baby however he wakes up for a moment and sees there's no baby in the first places, and Lynns belly looks normal. With an option to do that the game would've been a bit more satisfying if you ask me.
I know people like the idea of non combat horror games but I really don't feel it works in this case. If your not going to have combat the stealth system needs to be a heck of a lot better imo. You need more options than just crouching behind stuff and moving slowly. You don't even have the MGS level of putting a box on or wearing a set of farmer clothes as a disguise. But the main reason is I can't understand how a guy expects to save his wife from all these nut cases. You are barely by the skin of your teeth and thousands of feet of bandages wrapped around your arms getting threw these area's on your own. If by a miracle you found your girlfriend alive how the heck would you sneak back out? Even if she could walk two people sneaking is much harder than just one. Not to mention only you would be able to see in the dark via the camera.
You have night vision and hearing through walls as your advantage. From what I get in both outlast games the Player is not a fighter and will easily lose to any fight.. think of a very weak guy trying to hold a camera and attacking people with a huge shovel? on top of that the enemies are not very spread apart.. if you attack one, usually 2 others are there to chase you.. if you use logic to beat video games it will ruin your immersion. They told you "You are not a fighter" accept it and immerse yourself with the dead children and rape victims around you. :) This game is great imo because I completely stopped thinking logical and enjoyed what the game had to offer.. unlike drunk Joe who could not immerse himself and enjoy the great elements of the game. p.s I did not have bugs, glitches, fps drops or enemies seeing me through walls.
woop woop saying you play it without caring for logic while saying it's immersive at the same time...that's a glaring contradiction of yourself. A game is called immersive when it represents real life logic in it, if you have to abandoned logic while playing the game, then it's not immersive at all. Also let's be real, even the weakest of non-disabled guy can swing a shovel or pitchfork to try to defend themselves. You won't be running around the woods and able to withstand that much physical punishment if you're too weak to even swing a weapon or throw some punches.
A good stealth game has patrolling patterns, this game has ai's that hover around you because the ai actually knows where you are but the game has to disguise the fact so they act like they don't know. Check out any Marta sequence, she will always head towards you in your exact direction before "spotting" you. Then there are a bunch of unavoidable "you've been caught" moments where you are chased down the same linear corridor just like every other player and if you make the wrong coinflip, you're dead.
@AtriasNaradan I was really immersed by investing in the story and not trying to break the game/ruin the fun with logic. And it made total sense to me.. The character you play as is a weak guy who never has been to a fight or saw a dead person.. you expect to just start killing people when there are dozen of them surrounding you with weapons.. you expected it to be a fighting game or a scary outlast game? But if you want to think logically, I think there's a good amount of people who'd prefer running and avoiding enemies rather than trying to fight each one of them.. (Yes defending yourself with a weapon counts towards fighting). perhaps Red barrels had to make a better excuse for this one. I still had fun not thinking about any of those moments. The game kept distracting me with scary situations and shocking scenery. :)
@Grimreaper Dean I agree. Marta sees you instantly.. but the patterns to go past her were very obvious to me, they like expect you to run a little and then hide in a barrel or you could try to run around her Some parts were annoying but it's not as terrible as people make it sound. The A.I seem to follow you and act like you aren't hiding but then give you a moment to breathe.. it's a little different than the first outlast as they don't check hiding spots.. and their path seems strange sometimes. For me Marta was a scripted enemy.. and they want you to follow their script to beat her in her hide and run game. And just as a reminder, outlast 1 was pretty much the same deal.. They gave you a scripted chase and had you running exactly like they want in corridors and 1 way paths.. The only difference is the scale of the new world you are in.. you have much more areas to go and you can get lost, if you keep the night vision on and don't look at the obvious light or path that screams at you 'THIS WAY' then you are going to get annoyed. But it doesn't kill my fun as the game kept scaring me and get me on my toes with spooky jumpscares, dark story and amazing graphics. Every game has a flaw. This one deserved roughly an 8 or a 7 in my opinion.

The World Renowned Detective made me laugh tnx

Denam I agree, the AI was basically retarded through my entire walkthrough. There were times where the alien AI just "knew" I was there and the Alien was walking back and forward a corridor that was the only way to advance further. The vents were broken on many occasions, where you would get camped by the Alien and he would just rush you through the molotov making the gadget absolete. Then there was a moment when a human enemy would stand still 3 m. away from the Alien and they would just look at eachother... It all came down to sorta good and accurate graphics in the end and some occasional intense moments. IMO it had the potential but couldnt deliver.
You've got to agree that the graphics on life are pretty realistic!

Every gamer who isnt a graphics whore for president.

Can we all appreciate for a moment how fast Angry Joe made this review? The game came out 2 days ago, great work Joe!
TheOpticHalo My guess is that the passionate distaste for this game fueled him to finishing the review early
That would make sense
He could've got it early?
He played himself(saw other joe playing at least 2.5 hours of it) actually very little of the full game as at least a we saw on the full playthrough on twitch. an did so while intoxicated that killed the experience. Not impressed at all.
The fuck does that have to do with the damn review?
I think the one thing that can justify Waylon's situation is that the patients in Outlast are much more stringer than him, which we know could be the case since it's shown in the initial game with Chris, the twins, and Trager (maybe some varients to some extent.)
Not sure about Outlast 2 100%
Maybe Marta, Val and Nick could beat Blake in a fight but the rest doesn't make sense.

Wow outlast 2 looks like a really bad game
Matthew Schappell its worse then outlast 1 but its still good
dennisftw naw, I don't actually think it's bad, It was a just a joke
The game is Defineltly bad.
Gaming is definitely as bad as Joe says it is. He's pretty spot-on with the review on this one.
Matthew Schappell if you let others form your opinion, you have a goddamn problem.
There were things to in the first game also that you could use as weapons also. That also bothered me.
The fact you can't use a weapon is basically making this seem like more of a Chase Simulator
Yeah, that was my concern with the game as well, there's literally nothing new, and it's not even that scary

Still a worthless ending if you don't know the plot well and they're definitely trying to get you to buy dlc.
why is Lynn not affected by this emp/microwave test
AxeGamingYT she was in the mine 800 ft below the ground most of the game
Zach Foote hell I'll buy the dlc because the dlc for the first game I thought was better than the main game. So I have hopes this could be the same

Alan Wake was ass too
Or Dead Rising 4 lmao
+49Jacksonlrd Dead Rising 5 better be on all platforms like wtf I wanna play it and I'm not getting an Xbox!
I'm sorry but after playing Resident Evil 7, I would like to defend myself
Zachary Rodriguez to be fair it's a different type of horror game
Zachary Rodriguez Yeah, Resident evil 7 and Alien isolation are the best first person horror games imo.

AJ is my main source of reviewing. It's like he reads my mind.
holy shit you knew all the issues of the game when you watched the cutscene!? that's crazy!
the thing is outlast was just as repetative you also too just went from location to location running from trager, or chris walker, or billy, or the naked twins, doing the same objectives like switching pumps on.
Not to mention every time Blake asks Lynn about what happened she says "I don't want to talk about it" they literally explain absolutely nothing.

"Good graphics dont make a good game" If only more people understood this, but nope, as long as it looks good, who the fuck cares about gameplay and content am I right ?
ApexAZnn Yeah
Turtle Power
the point
----------
you
+Sean Genovese The really vocal people care more about graphics.
Want to play a good horror game that's also in first person and isn't all chases and hiding? Play condemned criminal origins.
Owen Krauss or RE 7. Man been so long since I played Condemned, awesome game.
Brian. Jr Montoya liked re7 a lot. My favs are still condemned, sh2&sh3. Liked alien isolation a lot as well.
Owen Krauss j The hiding was my favourite part of Outlast 1, which is why I'm so pissed off that they BUTCHERED it COMPLETELY in outlast 2.
Owen Krauss that game was so good, it managed to be super creepy even when you have a shotgun in your hands
Too bad we never got a _Condemned 3_.
Whoa! Joe! You can branch out! And play... a non-linear path. Guess what we gotta do? We can either outrun the enemies... or outrun the enemies... or guess what---*OUTRUN THE FUCKING ENEMIES!*
*GODZILLA IS APPROACHING THE GENEREATAH!*
lmao
Yuuki Terumi so true
that umbrella corps review is very funny tho especially when AJ went full apeshit and dropped his pants
+Christopher Cruz And thanks for pointing that out, that really blew my mind. And here I thought water isn't wet.
Christopher Cruz I think you missed the point
The constant chases killed this game
outlast 2 was a let down to me as well...making the map less linear actually destroyed the horror feel...afterall you cant be scared if you keep repeating a certain sequence over and over again just because you dont know where to go...
I liked the idea of having it take place outside with a larger place to explore but it wasn’t executed well
Yeah I agree i like the idea but the whole game just falls apart i HOPE this never happen to Outlast 3
if you're new to outlast just buy Outlast Trinity you will get outlast 1,2 and whistleblower dlc
2 is not worth it
yutube jode that's why I suggested buying outlast trinity for the newcomers
GreedoGaming88 hahaha xd
Just did scared to play by myself waiting till my wife gets home lmao
Christopher Gongora lol 😂
I hate these games when you don't pick up something to defend yourself...like a normal person would.
Kaxanlax yup 👌 I would run
And that's the main problem, they decided to put like 8 people chasing after you every freaking time
Kaxanlax And if I get cornered?
At least a one use one kill weapon or something. I hate running by knives, axes, large branches, etc that I could use in case if an emergency
PsychoBrad84 that's what makes it scary
Outlast 2 was not as great as 1 and the DLC.
Stfu it was much better than 1 by miles
@@Yacine_21uk. No it wasn't
@@MsKira1313 I played both and outlast 2 graphics gameplay much better especially jumpscare
Outlast 1 don't have much jumpscare and I even played dlc
@@Yacine_21uk. And that's your opinion. I'll stick with mine.
mr What it iss outlast 2 is a boring slog. The only times it got close to scary was the school and even that got old.
Whistleblower > Outlast 1 > Outlast 2
Pier I preferred Outlast 1 to Whistleblower. But I feel as though Whistleblower really completes and fleshes out the first game.
why is outlast 2 even in your comparison?
Nailed it
Karl Hans Outlast 1: Pretty scary, good game, awesome soundtrack.
Outlast whistleblower: improves EVERYTHING
Outlast 2: :/
Outlast 2 is honestly my favorite in the series. probably alone in that belief though.
Unfortunately Outlast 2 is less scary, intense and interesting than Outlast but the setting in Outlast 2 is interesting tho ! :(
Dusan Zdravkovic Sorry , but I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. This one so damn story driven you couldn't ask for more. Stepping into the school is too damn terrifying. At times I caught myself pleading to not ever go back to the school because of how horrific it is. Bugs and glitches I have yet to experience, but this actually tops the original outlast, but not whistleblower.

I really liked Outlast II, it scared the shit out of me, and had great atmosphere and lore. There were a LOT of problems and the ending was pretty bad, but it also had some great psychological horror and panicky chases. I just feel like this was a pretty mixed experience.
Funny enough it looks like they made the ending for just the comic readers
Play Siren, that game is scary as shit. Same with the original Fatal Frame series
@@scoobypup01. Siren is way too difficult. I love the Fatal Frame series. It’s grossly underrated.

Tekie Wolf Stuff like this always breaks any semblance of immersion the game had.
24:47 Sums up most horror games nowadays.

Play SOMA.
Annoying Gamer14 Shoved On My Ass?
eh, i assume you can only say that if you've played them all
Outlast 1 I consider a masterpiece of an indie game, how they screwed so hard with the second is beyond me. 😐
Is it? Like, it was pretty good, but the design was terrible, and it seems they didn't fix it for this.
The DLC was better than the main game :T
Your friendly neighbourhood Nazi true.. Whistleblower was a great dlc.. The main game comes next with the sequel following it in third place..
Aryan J I will always remember Gluskin. Or whatever his name was spelled xD
Yeah the dlc was an awesome experience, Gluskin and the cannibal were great enemies but my personal favourites are still Chris and Tragger
Damn Joe, that was fast! It only came out two days ago.

"Good graphic doesn't automatically make a good game"
Since late 90s some 'gamers' play solely for graphic. Maybe that's why the scoring is polarized.

Outlast 1 was set in more close environments, making the chases more tense, and hiding more effective. Outlast 2 is set in more open environments, making running more reliable than hiding. Anyone agree?
Tyler Nolan Yeah that makes sense.
👍
sadly the design of the levels prevent most running and thus ruining the running aspect
Tyler Nolan yup, joe is stupid
Max Padilla Hey, Joe's very smart, I've learned a lot from him. I was just making a point.
They changed the running mechanic so Blake gets tired after sprinting a short distance. Running in the original Outlast was actually really reliable because you were faster than all enemies and could run forever.
The start was just excellent if I watched a movie where the killer constantly screamed lines from the bible I can die happy
I'd stop referring to Metacritic as a legit source. The reviews are all over the place and most of it is nonsense.
HighLanderPony true. especially the movie rating system. sometimes it's right but other times it doesn't add up
Tyler Payne
I'm guessing it adds up when the reviews agree with your opinion, right?
No because it shows multiple reviews from many different sources, so by that logic you should blame a website for posting other peoples thoughts dumbass. But yeah there are other review sites like meta critic but I wouldn't say they are more reliable
Metacritic is just a collation of reviews from multiple reviewers, which is then standardised. I agree that it's all over the place, but only because individual reviewers are all over the place.
It's still the most efficient way of looking at what people are saying about a game.
HighLanderPony it's just the user section that's useless.
If a horror game frustrates you more than scare you? It has failed as a horror game. And the question come to mind, how did they mess this up?
Spicy Puffin mainly the school sections the annoyed the hell out of me
+Pacster 15 I agree. Especially for someone who doesn't like religion.
I like this game, but even I know it's extremely frustrating at times.
You make really good points Joe.
A game will give different people different experiences.
Can we all be honest, the School Sections are very Silent Hill like
Dr Strangelove yep i love it
Average horror fan so do I, but it brings back the pain of Silent Hills
I enjoyed those parts the most. The Jessica storyline interested me a lot, and the setting was more creepy to me than the isolated town.
Dr Strangelove well if this is the closest thing to silent hills until a new silent hill. I will take it
Dr Strangelove I rather be in remote location Arizona than be in that damn highschool. The school terrified me.
Totally agree, the school parts were the only good parts
Finally a review that doesn't suck the games dick. I liked the game but a lot of people act like this was perfect, which no game is.
yeah
you take this words right of my mouth...do not do it again its disgusting...
Outlast 1 was so much better than outlast 2 in my book's
It’s not your book. It’s the bible
True
"But that's the Bibble-"
"YOU DARE QUESTION THE WORDS OF THE LORD?!"
why? it was funny
They designed the game around PewDiePie's video editing. One big suspense, shock and chase every 20 minute episode.
These devs are making serious mistakes on their game design. They can't design the game around popular Let's players' preference and neglecting your bread and butter--the paying mass. Tailoring your game for gaming celebrities at the expense of average gamers has caused the downfall of many good franchises in the past and continuing.
"Beautiful looking disappointment"
An ex everyone has to have in their lifetime
Outlast 2 was trash. The first game and Whistleblower were both awesome.
Paul N. Yeah as he said basically a running simulator :/
I would disagree, I loved it! I played it from beginning to end, I didn't get frustrated once! I still love it despite everyones opinion!
Osama Bin Laden me too I mean I did die a lot but that was part of the fun I had problems where I didn't know where to go sometimes but I still liked it. However outlast 1 and whistleblower where better.
I agree with u, they were better but Outlast 2 isn't a bad game which is annoying how they put it...I'm glad u share a similar opinion to me :)
So Resident Evil 7 remains the best horror title of 2017 so far. Thanks for nothing Outlast. You were the chosen one.
*2016
lol_haha_dead it came out in 2017 moron
Genova well the demo was in 2016, so basically 2016
lol_haha_dead Notice how it's called best horror game, not demo
Konan Tenshi It was better than this game, and was lightyears better than RE 5 & 6.
"how i was saw" ?????
Siema 95 LMAOOOO
i started searching for this comment as soon soon i saw that part....lol was too funny...i mean no Joe, I CAN'T explain how you were saw!!
Xanthis Arljan True I mean even pewdiepie figured that shit out.
Xanthis Arljan Exactly, it kills me when let's players are too busy screaming and talking and end up missing so many things. SO many missed batteries out in the open sooooo many.
Howya Doin Pewdiepie has been playing horror games for long time, he's not the best example
J Robins Actually he is one of the best examples. Just because he played horror games for a long time doesn't mean he isn't a good example.
They clearly relied too much on gore rather than story and horror.
read this comment you scrub if you know the story and why the ending was the way it was it's actually a pretty incredible ending. the story is given to you on the first and you're supposed to remember what you learned from the documents in the first to understand the 2nd. Check out the explanation you might like it.
I did lol. Nothing about it seemed slightly realistic or was interesting to me
read this comment you scrub if you really read them all then what's it about ? How does it relate to the first outlast? Or are you just agreeing with everyone else ? Lol story was great. It's not suppose to make complete sense but the funny thing is that it does make sense and people rather just take everyone's word for it instead of sitting down and actually thinking about it. Put the piece together from the first outlast and all the notes and recordings from 2.
I never took anybody's word. I never watched a single let's play before playing it
read this comment you scrub
Actually, the emphasis was more on psychological horror rather than physical horror, with the latter being more specialized in the first game.
Christopher O Agreed, Resident evil 7 and alien isolation are the best first person horror games.
RE7 didn't look very good to me. The beginning looks pretty fun, but overly scripted; then it falls apart near the middle with boring fetch-quest gameplay. I haven't played it, but I've watched a playthrough, so from that I'd say it's a 6/10 game in my opinion.
inputfunny You should play it, it's a different experience from watching it, i can guarantee it.
Evolve the formula? RE7 is exactly like the original titles just with a first person perspective lol.
I was playing the original right after it launched at the age of like 6 at my uncle's place. Nice try though.
I'll take eddie gluskin over father knoth any day. I dont think Outlast II was bad but it certainly wasn't as good as the first, which scared me no matter how many times I saw it. Outlast II barely held my attention, really overhyped and under delivered.
One of my favorite intros you guys have done 😂
It's weird seeing all the Outlast fans that are super defensive over this review. Instead of taking it as a "different opinion", they have to go through a list of bullet points to "dismiss" or "de-legitimate" someone else's opinion. Let's see what the typical responses are:
* He gave Suicide Squad a good review (a film, not a game) - so hur dur, why should anyone take his opinion seriously.
El A lmao you wrote that entire comment and got 1 like. Don't worry I'll help you out.

Stone Ocean adaptation is looking great so far.
You’re about four years too early
The school sections were the best in the game and I think without them this game would've been trash.
(SPOILERS)
The ending is still trash even with all the notes revealing that everyone was just crazy from a large scale Murkcoff experiment.
(SPOILERS)
What I think could've fixed all this was giving us an option to kill the baby in the ending. Blake's effort to resist the mind control done by Murkcoff. Upon killing the baby however he wakes up for a moment and sees there's no baby in the first places, and Lynns belly looks normal. With an option to do that the game would've been a bit more satisfying if you ask me.
Lynn's belly would've looked the same.
Joe I also recommend .... SOMA!! ... had an AMAZING ending ... way better than this game and the first one
Lord Zephyros fuck yeah! 🤘🤘
SOMA was awesome... 10/10.
Lord Zephyros not scary at all though
Lord Zephyros man I genuinely felt sad at the Soma ending though. amazing game through and through
depressingly beautiful ending, I loved it.
Joe: "10/10 water."
Other Joe: "7/10 too much water."
This game is great imo because I completely stopped thinking logical and enjoyed what the game had to offer.. unlike drunk Joe who could not immerse himself and enjoy the great elements of the game.
p.s I did not have bugs, glitches, fps drops or enemies seeing me through walls.
woop woop saying you play it without caring for logic while saying it's immersive at the same time...that's a glaring contradiction of yourself.
@AtriasNaradan
I was really immersed by investing in the story and not trying to break the game/ruin the fun with logic.
@Grimreaper Dean
I agree. Marta sees you instantly.. but the patterns to go past her were very obvious to me, they like expect you to run a little and then hide in a barrel or you could try to run around her
Some parts were annoying but it's not as terrible as people make it sound.
Still kinda sad that joe didn't do a Horizon zero dawn review
he's mostly an xbox guy i feel
Mystic Mac Incorrect
