Leland Coyle being one of the most depraved humans in Outlast imaginable but still getting a free pass on life due to his "charisma" has to be one of the most depressingly realistic aspects of this story.
He’s one of those characters that has an awesome design but a personality that makes you question liking them I really like Coyle’s design and themeing so I made a alternate version of him in my head with a more palatable depravity and yes that is a thing because some horrible things make other horrible things look not as bad (mostly in fiction) so I can enjoy him more because his personality is extremely yeesh
It’s cool but I feel like it makes the game less scary there’s something more frightening feeling completely alone having friends gives it a sense of comfort
The way Outlast explores the manipulation of the human psyche is fascinating to me. It really shows just how fragile and twisted most people can be. Psychopaths, religious zealots, scientific geniuses, it's so enthralling to see just how far Murkoff is willing to go for financial and scientific gain, and how damn good they are at their job. They're like The Umbrella Corporation's big brother.
@Jartran72 yeah I don't believe mind control is so easily obtained like people want to think it is. Sure humans are all the same but the way an individuals brain functions or how they act is vastly diffrent person to person
Good job on this video man. The fact that you spent more than 70 hours on just gameplay alone for this video says a lot. Your doing great work with the videos that you make. I work a lot so I’m not able to take deep dives into games like you do, and you do a really good job at it. Anyways I know that most jobs are thankless now a days. So I just wanted to leave this gesture to remind you that a lot of people like your vid’s. Cheers mate
Donald Ewen Cameron is also a big inspiration for this game series, his psychiatric experiments that he did with the CIA were full on torture with the goal of erasing the patient's personality via constant trauma so severe the patient would regress to childhood to escape it, so then a new one could be programmed. His work heavily inspired Milton Friedman in economics with his shock doctrine, and the millitary tactic of shock and awe, which were basically the idea of applying the technique to an entire population.
What's also very interesting about all the major Murkoff patients/bosses is all have been tortured into becoming EXTREME archetypes of whatever their mental illness/delusion was. Warped mentally and physically, so much so they barely feel the pain (based on the severity of this damage) of their new warped appearance.
I kind of wonder if the grand finale of the Outlast series is finally bringing down Murkoff and giving justice to all that suffered because of it. One constant with each of these games and the comics/stories is that Murkoff always gets away with its atrocities and even though there are people opposing them, it often either doesn’t end well for them or they’re unable to do much damage, often both. So imagine the finale of the series being Murkoff finally being brought down and all the pain and suffering wasn’t in vain
I think things are more optimistic than they might initially seem, at least if the comics are considered. In them, Miles is shown to be an undead superhero who prioritizes Murkoff for his vengeance rather than random innocents, Waylon remains out of Murkoff's grasp, and Blake is implied to become a blind dreamer and to be hooked up to a morphogenic engine at a Murkoff facility, which will likely mean he will cause even more damage than Miles has. I agree that the final game will probably be an apocalyptic showdown between the leaders of Murkoff and a force of rebels led by the Walrider
@@8johhDepends on what you consider 'grounded', I consider the series as campy and as silly as Metal Gear, especially with the original game's final boss being literally 'nanomachines, son!' A final game that's riffing off of Ozymandius' plan from Watchmen, with Murkoff intending to broadcast their madness signal on a global scale while the Walrider brings the apocalypse down on Murkoff's HQ, would make for an epic finale IMO.
This guy is SO underrated-- he literally explains the lore of games in the most UNDERSTANDABLE way possible--unlike any other content creator who explains game lore---Harry is by far my favorite (that and superhorrorbro)
Have been waiting on this. Outlast for me combines great horror with rich story and worldbuilding, they go out of their way to make sure every single thing makes sense in the world of Outlast and I love it.
This could explain the tentacle dude from the second game. The people from Outlast 2 were turning their nightmares into projectors as mentioned in one of the notes meaning both Blake and the cult members were seeing things and sending each other their fears. So maybe Blake was seeing a version of the Skinner Man in the form of the Priest from the second game as a monster with "tendrils" and many hands by his head which could look like the veins we saw before. Holy crap this game has so many layers to its story I love it. EDIT: Forgot I made this comment but I came back to add that the Heretics decorate their body with sticks making them look like the skinner man also. The halo/cross symbols we see in the town have a cross with two circles lined with spikes that again resemble the skinner man style.
Damn, I never thought of that! I always thought the hands and tounges were meant to symbolize his...uh....."fun time" with Jessica, but honestly the skinner man theory seems equally as likely.
@@karthikbalamurugan7390 There is a lot in the Second game that I think people took for granted because they thought the game was rushed or lacking in quality. I think it's more that we were missing information that would have made things way more interesting. Example being the Locust from the second game that pushes Blake off a bridge. Completely random and nobody talks about the possibility that it was maybe real? Say it is real and mind you, (another villager claimed to have seen the same swarm right after), this would mean a random ass swarm of bugs picks up a man and throws him. Blake even says that they were quote "Trying to pick him up." I never see anyone talk about this for some reason. I think this is possibly the Walrider from the first game in their bug form from the comics. We know for a fact that he (The ants) destroyed the tower in the end. Is it no stretch to say that Blake ran into it on the bridge and the monster threw him off? All that and I haven't seen any video discussing it. I really hope it gets more attention at some point.
@@mr.guakacado970Yes, that bug swarm was definitely the Walrider - if you turn on night vision, you'll see the bugs spark as though they contain electricity. They attacked Blake, perhaps because he needed to first suffer through the torments of the Scalled before becoming a better host for its needs.
What I love about this game (besides the game itself) is the fact it fills In previous gaps. Not any gap that needed to be filled but for instance, who was Sullivan knoth before? Why was he like this? As well as everyone else we’ve come across. Also the one that I mostly wanted to mention is 2’s flashes of light and sound. Now that it’s explained as a trigger and or mind influencing device it makes sense whenever it happens that Blake gets more and more insane each time. Not to mention, whenever the tower that makes the flash is destroyed. Blake watches the world get destroyed by the sun but in reality once that facility was destroyed, Blake’s mind was already so destroyed by it that he goes comatose. Without murkoff in his brain filling in the holes, he can’t function anymore. I can’t imagine how screwed half these people really are just from these trials.
Yeah exactly. And that explains why Lynn wasn’t affected that much mentally, because the heretics pretty much took her to the caves straight away, which was sheltered from the signals. At the end of Outlast 2, Lynn wasn’t seeing anything that Blake was seeing. Which is why she can’t see the ‘baby’ that Blake was holding.
There are certainly elements of this that are similar to the real MKULTRA - the depatterning and psychic driving experiments done on women in a clinic in Canada run by Dr Ewen Cameron, for example. There was even a sleep room at the clinic, where they would knock people out with drugs and lock an American football helmet to their head, with speakers in it, to try to reprogram people. The process worked in as much as they could remove most of a person's personality - they would use electroshock, sometimes for hours at a time, to erase the personality. The difficulty was imprinting a new one through the use of the helmets in the sleep room, there was something about the subjects that was completely resistant. The stuff at the end with Castro is interesting too - there were several operations against Cuba, some of which were designed to poison Castro (they were going to put a poison in a milkshake that he got on a daily basis, but the pills froze and became useless). There was also an operation which was never carried out to enact the second coming of Christ - a submarine would approach the coast of Cuba and an operative would walk out of the sea dressed in a robe, pretending to be Christ himself! CIA at the time were pretty bonkers, lol.
Good point about the historical precedent in creating false prophets as a psy-op. Not only does Outlast allude to this with the entire Temple Gate/Knoth cult, but I think Murkoff's grand plan regarding their use of religion as a brainwashing tool is to eventually create a false apocalypse - they will cause mass chaos by using morphogenic broadcasts to make reagents turn berserk, while false 'prophets' will demand the survivors swear loyalty to them or suffer a fate worse than death.
@@Marukanitel Right?! Pretty bonkers. Saw it mentioned in a documentary years ago, - it was a part of Operation Mongoose, which was adjacent to MKULTRA I believe, rather than part of it. There were ties though.
To say it takes place many years before the main game, I like how it links all games together like how Sullivan Noth was a test subject for Murkoff I wonder what else is on the horizon, I can't wait
I just love Outlast worldbuilding in general. It feels both very grounded(given it`s based on so many real life events) and epic. Murkoff definitely could rival Umbrella in its cruelty, but I don`t know if it`ll ever really be brought down. On one hand I`d like that to happen but on the other,it feels too much like an idealistic and happy ending for series as morbid and dark as this.
I am SO grateful for stumbling across this channel over a year ago, and mad respect to the homie running this channel. so glad this is a video. I didn't feel like scroll through the outlast trials wiki to read the plot lmao. Keep up the good work !
As a German, can I just say that your pronunciation of Gottlieb as “godly-ebb” is ADORABLE? Like, no shade, I know you are putting lots of effort into your videos, you’re really admirable and your love for the Outlast series shines through each time. And you are better than other UA-camrs about pronunciation of non-English names but I just think it’s adorable. However, compared to some other English content creators, I don’t need a transcript to understand you saying a German name
Have been waiting months for this video to come out. Not only is it a (somewhat) history analysis, but a video game lore/retelling. Thank you for the great videos!
Thank you Harry for your hard work on this series! It must have been super frustrating trying to get all the documents, I can only imagine how many times you had replay through levels. Can't wait to binge watch this!
As someone who just can’t bring themselves to play horror games your videos are amazing for actually getting to hear some of the great writing that goes into some of these games
I like the video, I like the guy, but his explanation of the Cold War is extremely and uncritically pro-American. I understand that at the end of the day outlast is just a video game franchise, but if we’re going to watch a lore video on a video game franchise that actually has a decent political and historical… Conscience?, I think it is owed more than a pro-American, whitewashed history of the Cold War.
@jryan2552 funny you say that. Some people have accused me of being ‘Anti-American’, and of spreading Communist propaganda in the other Outlast videos. Amazing how political leanings work… both sides did terrible stuff, I’m not ‘pro’ anything. I’m merely commenting on what happened during the Cold War.
Honestly the best thing about this story is I can’t tell what’s fiction and what’s reality. The whole thing sounds so morally evil that it must be fiction yet it actually happened in our history.
Didn't have time to watch the full series on the second channel, been waiting for this. Good job as usual Mr. Harry, keep it up, most comprehensive coverage on youtube.
I am so fucking STOKED for this series! I will confess, I was worried Outlast Trials wouldn't ever get released. But then I was happily proved wrong AND THEN THE COMMUNITY POST THAT YOU WERE WORKING ON THIS ONE! I love how you explain videos and I eagerly await the next one 💜
This is a great break down of the trials! I love how thorough this is, and appreciate all the sources used. I've always loved the lore/world building of Outlast 1 + Whistleblower and remember when Trials came out, but I never really gave it much thought until recently. I think what pulled me in was how much more visceral and Bioshock-like the world was in this game. I'm glad I started looking into it more...god I love lore.
Interesting theory regarding Reagent 877 being Simon! Although I personally think he might be another character, either Martin or a potentially unseen one so far - Peacock was mentioned by Marion to have been working for Murkoff and only disappearing relatively recently after being caught whistleblowing (around 6 years prior to the Murkoff Account), presumably the moment when he became a Walrider prototype. My belief that 877 is Martin is because they have a religious connection and 1616 is most definitely Knoth (shoe salesman in Albuquerque who is horny, in debt, and has a fascination with putting metal to his eye.) I think the Skinner Man is an early precursor to the Inner Demon that the cult worship - there are fleshy red tendrils that surround them both, they manifest when people are experiencing psychotic breaks, and as pointed out the heretics' head adornments parallel the Skinner Man's head tendrils AND the Inner Demon's many tongues and arms. I also think that Loutermilch is a reagent and that he was 'triggered' by Murkoff during that fateful night with Blake and Jessica. The themes of the Fun Park and Orphanage tie in heavily with the themes of Blake's school (killing 'bad' children + religious schooling), so it's possible that Loutermilch internalized those teachings and his killer/abuser programming came into effect at St. Sybil. Another connection is the mystery behind Loutermilch's voice being heard in the recordings - it's possible that the 'god' he is addressing is actually Murkoff/Easterman, thanking him for his 'gifts'. Loutermilch's final recording is titled 'I Have Lots of Friends', which could IMO also link to him being tied to Murkoff. Once again, one of the most vile and loathsome characters in the franchise turns out to be the creation of an even greater evil.
@@BlueJayz474 Thanks! I'd been wondering about Loutermilch ever since Trials was announced, and it would be interesting if even this vile monster was another puppet of Murkoff just like Knoth. It's incredibly creepy IMO to think that there's a secret network of sociopaths who are hidden in mainstream society.
Very good theory, the timeline of Loutermilch's age and the time wherein Sinyala was operational also seem to match, plus the detail of the telephone in St. Sybil and the use of trigger words. Loutermilch's psychology is also strangely childlike and delusional, he sees himself as a rival for Blake, competing with him for Jessica's "love" and is bitter, mocking in tone towards him, as opposed to preying on Jessica for his pleasure he actually seems to be much more emotionally involved and bizarrely infantile in behavior, not quite a typical pedophile. It's also worth noting that the Murkoff logo appears in the static in Blake's school recordings that feature Loutermilch speaking. Funny how Murkoff was able to ruin Blake's life so far in the past with such a distant connection assuming this is true, and he never had any idea. He even saw the place where it all started.
i love outlast and amnesia games, and the way you tell their lore in deep depths is next level. not talking about other stuff, not a huge load of self-advertising, just pure story to enjoy. keep it up💞

Thank you for this amazing video. i have not playes this one yet because multilplayer in horror defeats the whole purpose for me but I was interestes in the additions to the lore. I looked up other videos but they just summarized the gameplay events and a little about the enemies. THIS, EXACLY this is what I wanted to watch. Deep outlast breakdowns of people who looked at everything available and are able to present it in a clear and conscise way with fitting editing. Amazing video that scratched my outlast itch for now. Thank you so much.

This just makes me love Outlast all over again. The way the story is so interconnected, the SPIDER EYE LAMB connection in the gospel! That’s such a cool detail to include to tie the story together!!!
Love this video. So much thought and detail and linking with actual events is so clever. Thank you for making this video and spending over 70 hours getting this story!

This was a great video! Your videos have been popping up on my feed lately and theyve been a blast to watch! Id also love to see a deep dive on the Remnant From the Ashes series!
I think I get what the outlast franchise is about. The themes are varied and general but they all have a common point in them. Trying to control or change minds which went wrong and backfired resulting in horror and calamity.
The trials they added are creepy and Coyle and Gooseberry are terrifying and all, but I wish they had a different character for the 3rd trial at the mansion
When i started watching i didn't know what to expect, but a couple of minutes in the video i knew it! i went to the kitchen to fix myself some snacks :D. Brilliant script mate, you're awesome! The attention to detail is crazy! I was never a fan of Outlast Trials as its somehow copied off of RE7 Biohazard ( the extra bonus games ) imo, but i do love Red Barrel's crazy MURKOFF stories. Thank you again for your work, the effect your video had is that i may try to play this game after all ;). Stay safe.
I fully enjoyed myself! It took me 3 hours to finish because I kept stopping and reading everything 😅😂 But it was great finding out the lore of the game.
Very well-made video! I like the Outlast series a lot, and loved Trials' Open Beta, but I'm not going to buy the game until they implement an Offline mode (if ever). So it was nice to be filled in of those crucial pieces of lore here. Thank you! Hope you're doing well.
At one point the scientist is quoted as saying, "the most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all of its contents." This comes straight out of the mystery and horror author H. P. Lovecraft and his thought and writing. In terms of their themes, the Outlast games have a lot of Lovecraftian influence even if it's not as on-the-nose as some others
Oh my gosh I've literally been watching and checking yutube to see if you got this done yet ! I'm so excited I'm weird but thanks for doing these! That's one reason I play games is for the lore! 😊😊😊❤❤

@@Marukanitel If you don't already know it, look into the CIA using vampires in the Philippines
@@Marukanitel Right?! Pretty bonkers. Saw it mentioned in a documentary years ago, - it was a part of Operation Mongoose, which was adjacent to MKULTRA I believe, rather than part of it. There were ties though.
To say it takes place many years before the main game, I like how it links all games together like how Sullivan Noth was a test subject for Murkoff
I wonder what else is on the horizon, I can't wait
That’s the preacher from the 2nd game yeah?
I just love Outlast worldbuilding in general. It feels both very grounded(given it`s based on so many real life events) and epic. Murkoff definitely could rival Umbrella in its cruelty, but I don`t know if it`ll ever really be brought down. On one hand I`d like that to happen but on the other,it feels too much like an idealistic and happy ending for series as morbid and dark as this.
Questions why does murcoff call the test subjects reagents instead of variants 🤔 or are they different 🤔
I am SO grateful for stumbling across this channel over a year ago, and mad respect to the homie running this channel.
so glad this is a video.
I didn't feel like scroll through the outlast trials wiki to read the plot lmao.
Keep up the good work !
Harry your videos are such high quality, please keep up the amazing work man!
Bro explained the cold war better than most history teachers in the U.S can 💀
Fr tho
In video that explains lore of such some odd horror Video game about very bad peoples putting mental unwell peoples in glass bubbles
@@Munki_ Did bro just try to discreetly mention the first Outlast?
Harry, keep it up, most comprehensive coverage on youtube.
waited for you to release this, i didnt want anyone else to tell me the story. Love your content
Can’t wait for season two the lore has been absolutely fascinating!
I have been waiting for you. lol Your content is A+
You put so much work into your videos and they're gold 👏 thank you Harry!
Really interesting stuff, the lore around this game series is so in depth I've always been very impressed with it. Another great video Harry!
I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for this video and couldn’t have been happier when I saw it was about 50 minutes
My belief that 877 is Martin is because they have a religious connection and 1616 is most definitely Knoth (shoe salesman in Albuquerque who is horny, in debt, and has a fascination with putting metal to his eye.)
I think the Skinner Man is an early precursor to the Inner Demon that the cult worship - there are fleshy red tendrils that surround them both, they manifest when people are experiencing psychotic breaks, and as pointed out the heretics' head adornments parallel the Skinner Man's head tendrils AND the Inner Demon's many tongues and arms.
Good theory about Loutermilch
Absolutely epic man
@@BlueJayz474 Thanks! I'd been wondering about Loutermilch ever since Trials was announced, and it would be interesting if even this vile monster was another puppet of Murkoff just like Knoth. It's incredibly creepy IMO to think that there's a secret network of sociopaths who are hidden in mainstream society.
@@mattmedrala1947 Definitely more fact than fiction!
Been waiting for this video! LFG
i love outlast and amnesia games, and the way you tell their lore in deep depths is next level. not talking about other stuff, not a huge load of self-advertising, just pure story to enjoy. keep it up💞
Finally! I've been waiting for you to drop a new vid since forever. Thanks, Harry.
Thank you so much for this. I’m obsessed with Outlast lore but it’s been hard for me to sit down and piece all the evidence together!
As always, Harry, I'm in awe. Extraordinary work. You make examine reality and fiction and smoothly connect them all in an entertaining way. Thank you!
I appreciate all your hard work on this video! The "Spider, Eye, Lamb" is very interesting!
Red Barrels comparing project LATHE to Disneyland directly is pretty damn heavy. 😅
I really appreciate you going into depth and putting in the work for these videos ❤
I've never played outlast and i stumbled on this video and I never had any idea the game was this deep and interesting and scary. Please make more of these!
Can I just say that you explaining history is very concise, cohesive, and articulate! I'd love to hear world history narrated by you 😊
This just makes me love Outlast all over again. The way the story is so interconnected, the SPIDER EYE LAMB connection in the gospel! That’s such a cool detail to include to tie the story together!!!
Never stop these amazing videos please
Absolute god-level content, watched countless of your videos. Keep up the great work!!
Been waiting on this to drop
Finally here, i was looking for it today !!
Omg I have waited soooooooooooooo long for this episode and have checked for it every single day am so excited
Hell yeah i was waiting for this, binged watched through your gameplay videos today and now i am excited for this one
OH IM SO SO EXCITED FOR THIS. currently cooking dinner so I’ll watch this soon as I’m sat with food omg
Love this video. So much thought and detail and linking with actual events is so clever. Thank you for making this video and spending over 70 hours getting this story!
Been waiting for this. Thanks
ddn't expect to finally learn some of the context behind the historic USSR vs USA animosity from a youtube vdeo explaining the outlast trials. anyway great vid as always!
Amazing work! I love the lore of this game but finding all the documents is a chore! Thanks Harry.
Thank you for all the work you did on this! I am beyond impressed!
Harry!!! Yes! I watched your playthroughs of this. And here we go.
Ive been waiting for this so long i love outlast and your out last videos are so good at explaining everything keep up the great work brother cant wait for more
I’ve been waiting for this one!!
This was excellently done, sir!
Been waiting on this one for a while
I was waiting for this video !!! Love ur vids
I've been patiently awaiting your amazing explained video on this game! Thank you!!
I was checking youtube for an old Gaming Harry video to watch and instead he blessed us with a new one. thanks!!
I've been playing this sometimes and honestly it's more of a fun casual play but I love the extra bits of lore, really fleshes things out
The trials they added are creepy and Coyle and Gooseberry are terrifying and all, but I wish they had a different character for the 3rd trial at the mansion
YESSSS! I've been waiting for this one! I'm so happy this video was posted, and it is so good!
Love this video. Thank you for putting it all together! I don’t do well with horror games but I enjoy horror stories so these are much appreciated!😊
Solid video, as always.
Excellent work Harry, great video and story telling as always. Keep up the great work.
The perfect place to come for game story explanations, another amazing story video! Great can't wait for more
YESS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FROM YOU
You got this down pack! Time to listen before bed you’re the best man. I know finding those documents were a pain in the ass.
your videos are really entertaining dude, keep up the great work!!

I really thank god for stumbling upon this channel randomly the dedication, hard work, editing, narration everything from A-Z is chef's kiss 😘

Thanks for this, i really needed to understand what was going on with this game as its different from the others
Finally!! Have wait on this!!🎉
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS LETS GO
34:55 That smoke effect was incredible.
Stay safe.
Dude you’re literally the best with these keep up the good work 🤙🏼
Definitely gives a whole other perspective replaying outlast 2!
Thank you so much for this and the previous video!
Awesome breakdown 😊 amazing how this franchise manages to bring new life and introduce new characters
waited so long for this :D
Please do the Bridge Curse 2! Loved watching u do the first one, especially since it was confusing to me. I do watch other videos💚
