amazing to think The Pixies were turning out performances like this in1989...no glitz and all substance...weird and catchy soft and crushing .....in the midst of Poison, Whitesnake, Cinderella, Ratt, and Sunset Blvd culture...... the Pixies were light years ahead of their time and one of the best rock bands of all time hands down.....
skids marquee Why the Hell do you think bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, etc. would be inspired by bands like The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., etc.
:) Yeah the Rodon. ha I was there too. Don't remember any of this though. :( I do remember playing Surfer Rosa on cassette endlessly for the next 3-4 years in my Patission flat so something stuck. Then I got CD. ha thanks for reminding me I was an idiot in the 80s, and most of the 90s. The music is still wonderful, the soundtrack to my life. Oh and I am still playing bass and I am still a woman, so something definitely stuck.
Holy fuck! I turned 40 this year, in june.......this is the soundtrack to my high school years.....THANK GOD.......LOBE THIS SHIT, ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL!!!!!!!!!'--peacers!!
OMG, I was there too, just over 18 years old and this fucking band hit me like a sledge hammer!! Probably the biggest surprise of my life, listening to such powerful music! Where is my mind ? (Πολύ τυχεροί όσοι βρεθήκαμε στο Ρόδον εκείνο το βράδυ.....)
I saw a top 100 guitarists poll in a magazine once and Charles was in there but not Joey. Perhaps they were confused about who plays what in the band....I mean Charles rhythm is great but Joey's playing is unique.
What about Frank Black? Frank Black is honestly one of the best rhythm guitarists I've ever heard in my entire life. When I watch him play live on UA-cam it blows my mind every time because the strumming patterns and chord changes are so unique. Small things like that are what make me so blown away as a guitar player by Frank Black/Black Francis/Charles Thompson whatever you want to call him.
I'd just like to send out a big thank you to the person that recorded this back in 89. And if its the poster of the youtube video as well, I'd just like to give a double thank you. Nothing like seeing a band in their prime.
+Tom Ace It was recorded by the production company associated with the club they played, and broadcast on the -then - state TV channel ET2, that much is stated at the beginning of the video.
Tom Ace I hate to think of this as being their prime since they were active for many more years. I think Bossa Nova was an excellent effort! Let's say they plateaud after this album...
I will always remember when I discovered the Pixies. I was cleaning out an apartment around 1993 in rural Minnesota. Found a CD called Dolittle in a corner. Decided to put in in a player and and listen - been a fan every since! I was working and dancing the rest of the day and night! Maybe for the rest of my time on Earth!!!
I've been listening to " Sam cooke live at the Harlem square club " for a week straight, these white people are utterly amazing tho, I grew up with the pixies, I'm 39......surfer rosa and Doolittle were crazy prescient, crazy ahead of their time this band
I used to think that Nirvana were one of the most diferent and original bands , but i was wrong , it was Pixies. I can see a HUGE influence of them at Nirvana's sound , style and structure of the songs. Unbelieveable!
CNN, FOX, MSNBC, and all other news and communication agencies need to let people know when a new Pixies concert is posted on You Tube. They are that fucking important! Thanks WiltshireByWays for posting!
i was 13 yrs when i show that video at greek national tv and the pixies was a revalation for me. i have never stoped listening to them ever since. i was so supprised to see that video again.
Believe it or not - this was recorded by a State Channel..Back then,25 years ago,we had only two tv-channels,here in Greece.. both state-channels,controlled 100% by the goverment !....Yet,these years, was a kind of..groovy era for Athens and Greece..Much less-almost no-tecnology,hanging around the city, day or night, with no fear, a sense of creativity,a feeling that new, good things are coming..(Lasted some years, turned out to be an illusion,a bubble..few months after the Olympics of 2004,the collapse started..)
outside of the strobe this might be the greatest look at america's most important band. ever. there are few bands whose shows that compare. this is obviously seminal. great posting. thanks.
Everytime I watch this performance I love it more and more. Excuse me for not knowing how to talk about music but the way they grunged with some blues and harmony? Color me impressed.
I've listened to this video a million times - so good - even though it's missing that little piece of lyric in the beginning of that song, "Hey! Been trying to meet you ..."
Thanks to dial-up internet I discovered the band, although quite late in the late 90s. The Pixies tops my fave list for any hour, any week , any month, any year, any decade, any millenia. I'm in love again and again with this band. If I can see this band performing live, I can finally die peacefully.
I started writing to try and express how awesome this is. But there are no words .... Lets just say "the best thing on youtube" and leave it at that. And a huge THANK YOU! to WiltshireByways .
I say the Pixies are the greatest American band. I am 55 and most look at me like I'm crazy. Yeah, Kim and Francis unashamed of being imperfect! That is what makes them perfect!!!
This goes down as one of the most outstanding Pixies performances in history. I used to have this on audio. Essentially it is where they had peaked as a musical force depending on your biases. Amazing sound and quality. Will watch again all the way for sure. Pixies don't disappoint to this day. It's like the classic quality of Buddy Holly, the cohesion on the Beatles, the humor of the Kinks, the teenage angst of Husker Du and the expression of Captain Beefheart rolled into one band. I like.
The thing that made them truly great is Kim and Franks duets were the band( but we forget the great lead guitar and drums and they were equal!) . Thurston was scared of Kim singing for most of it and David Byrne totally shut down Tina. But these two were the dynamic duo :)
I saw these guys live yesterday. It's amazing seeing the difference in voice and feel then and now. They seemed less enthusiastic, but it was still timeless and a great experience!
URIAH HIT THE CRAPPER! Actually the best damn primal scream in alt rock can be heard at 20:12. After that it is safe to go listen to On Graveyard Hill... or something. Actually I’d rather stay here and keep clicking on 20:12 for the LOLZ
This was the time that Charles wasn't ignoring Kim yet by turning his back to her so obviously on stahe... Charles, you should know, Kim is a real goddess, little bit more respect for our girl from Dayton, you should be glad that she joined the pixies in the first place
thomayra that is right this whole band was so high would be a miracle if they knew where they are at time in this show. sincerely, william "the joker" aka bauhaus musik 2929
I've always thought these were nice, so: 1. Into the White 0:10 2. Wave of Mutilation 3:27 3. Debaser 5:34 4. Dead 8:25 5. Cactus 10:50 6. There Goes My Gun 13:05 7. No. 13 Baby 15:00 8. Isla de Encanta 18:54 9. Hey 20:34 10. Crackity Jones 24:07 11. I Bleed 25:44 12. Caribou 28:07 13. Where Is My Mind? 31:10 14. Nimrod's Son 34:58 15. Vamos 37:44 16. Gouge Away 41:56 17. Tame 44:39 18. Tony's Theme 47:59 19. In Heaven 50:05
good lord, this set, fucking outstanding! every song, im like, awww this is the best on the set lol. vamos is beyond tight 0.0 but yeah, the strobe light is a bit much.....
amazing to think The Pixies were turning out performances like this in1989...no glitz and all substance...weird and catchy soft and crushing .....in the midst of Poison, Whitesnake, Cinderella, Ratt, and Sunset Blvd culture...... the Pixies were light years ahead of their time and one of the best rock bands of all time hands down.....
well said!

Concordo plenamente com VC .....
So we'll said its ridicule-ous
Goddamn auto correct, meant "well said"
Best band of all time.
this is the video I recorded off the greek tv and gave the VHS tape to a guy in UK in 2002. the rest is history..BTW I was present in that gig!
THANK... YOU!!!
:) Yeah the Rodon. ha I was there too. Don't remember any of this though. :( I do remember playing Surfer Rosa on cassette endlessly for the next 3-4 years in my Patission flat so something stuck. Φίλε μου αυτή η συναυλία δεν ξεχνιέται ούτε με πλύση εγκεφάλου! Έγραψε ιστορία....
Isn’t this club an Άλφα Βήτα now?
@@AwayGoalRule yes, super market.
Holy fuck! I turned 40 this year, in june.......this is the soundtrack to my high school years.....THANK GOD.......LOBE THIS SHIT, ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL!!!!!!!!!'--peacers!!
Just turned 30 this month and I cannot believe this was the 80's. So ahead of their time. Unbelievable band.
OMG, I was there too, just over 18 years old and this fucking band hit me like a sledge hammer!! Probably the biggest surprise of my life, listening to such powerful music! Where is my mind ?
Is Joey Santiago the most underrated guitarist of all time? Or is it just me? I tried to imagine the Pixies w/out the leads, & it made no sense.
I totally agree.
Richard Sangeleer he is amazing, the creativity levels are off the charts
I saw a top 100 guitarists poll in a magazine once and Charles was in there but not Joey. Perhaps they were confused about who plays what in the band....I mean Charles rhythm is great but Joey's playing is unique.
Indeed. Very underrated guitarist. I know its cliche to say that about bands you like, but c'mon.
Those licks on Into The White..... just....no words... I listen to that song at least 5 times a week.
I'd just like to send out a big thank you to the person that recorded this back in 89. And if its the poster of the youtube video as well, I'd just like to give a double thank you. Nothing like seeing a band in their prime.
I agree, these videos are amazing. I missed a lot of these tours being in the military, great to catch up three decades later.
+Tom Ace It was recorded by the production company associated with the club they played, and broadcast on the -then - state TV channel ET2, that much is stated at the beginning of the video.

they're drummer fucking kicks ass. if it wasnt for his virtuosity people might disregard the pixes as a punk band.
+jackoo666 He is incredibly underrated indeed
They're definitely not punk but they do have a few punk songs. The closest one i can think of is broken face
holy crap this is good. Glad this is in the history books
No. 13 my favorite.
Baby
This version is so good.
Greg Brown Yes, for sure. But this version of Gouge Away isn't their best. Still rocks though.
I'm 48 years old. I have never heard anything like them. So weird yet so poppy at times. Like Beefheart and The Posies.
Welcome to the club!
***** Too whiny for me.
Thomas Fleming Did I tell you that I cried? Is it wrong not to always be glad?
***** A lot of people say La La Love You was an attempt to sound like The Smiths. Not sure myself.
I've been listening to " Sam cooke live at the Harlem square club " for a week straight, these white people are utterly amazing tho, I grew up with the pixies, I'm 39......surfer rosa and Doolittle were crazy prescient, crazy ahead of their time this band
Wish I had been more AWARE when I was younger (46 now). Should have been going to shows like this. Great stuff.
It's kind of a miracle Francis can still sing today if you hear him absolutely destroying his voice in the eighties. :p
People scream all the time without losing their voices. There is a technique to it.
Actually he can't scream as he used to, just check out newer videos.
suhijo I was about to say that. But maybe it's not all because of his earlier singing. Cigarettes?
just call it... age
nacho nachete I think he's talking about the screaming.
I used to think that Nirvana were one of the most diferent and original bands , but i was wrong , it was Pixies. I can see a HUGE influence of them at Nirvana's sound , style and structure of the songs. Unbelieveable!

I had an epileptic fit watching this. Still worth it.
where is my mind - forever here - thanks Greece for di share ...
What an incredible show! That was them in theyre prime!
If anyone wonders what happened to Franks voice, one word...... TAME!
Believe it or not - this was recorded by a State Channel..Back then,25 years ago,we had only two tv-channels,here in Greece.. both state-channels,controlled 100% by the goverment !....Yet,these years, was a kind of..groovy era for Athens and Greece..Much less-almost no-tecnology,hanging around the city, day or night, with no fear, a sense of creativity,a feeling that new, good things are coming..(Lasted some years, turned out to be an illusion,a bubble..few months after the Olympics of 2004,the collapse started..)
geo pan Great observation, bro.
This is one of my favorite concerts of all time. This is how you fucking do it.
Look at Joey's expression after 12:10. It's like he realized at once that he and charles had created greatness.
I seriously want to thank the uploader in person for this.
outside of the strobe this might be the greatest look at america's most important band. ever. there are few bands whose shows that compare. this is obviously seminal. great posting. thanks.

I was there that night. If I remember correctly, the club (the legendary Rodon) was not full. But it was a wonderful gig - as you can see.
Lucky you. I saw them twice in the 90s. I didn't realise how lucky I was.
I started writing to try and express how awesome this is. But there are no words ....
Lets just say "the best thing on youtube" and leave it at that.
And a huge THANK YOU! to WiltshireByways .
Joey Sandiago RULES!!!
Question; Was that first song called "Into the White"?
Yes. The tracklisting is in the description.
An obviously failed attempt at humor on my part.
J Van Son I lol'd
No. It's called "It's Too Wide!"
J Van Son i always heard "into the light"
I say the Pixies are the greatest American band. I am 55 and most look at me like I'm crazy. Yeah, Kim and Francis unashamed of being imperfect! That is what makes them perfect!!!
Thankyou for years ive been lookin for an 80's concert full length!!!! Thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From Wales :D
This goes down as one of the most outstanding Pixies performances in history. I used to have this on audio. Essentially it is where they had peaked as a musical force depending on your biases. Pixies absolutely at the top...thanks to post it. Think Dolittle issue time
i literally think iv watched this 3 times a day since i discovered it a week ago. best 52 minutes in music history if you ask me
The thing that made them truly great is Kim and Franks duets were the band( but we forget the great lead guitar and drums and they were equal!) . Thurston was scared of Kim singing for most of it and David Byrne totally shut down Tina. But these two were the dynamic duo :)
first time listening to Pixies, gotta say it's awesome music!
Hopefully it wasn’t the last time!
I saw these guys live yesterday. It's amazing seeing the difference in voice and feel then and now. They seemed less enthusiastic, but it was still timeless and a great experience!
one of the best to ever do it. so lucky to grow up in this era. go sox.
Πολυ μπροστα οσοι ηταν εκει πριν 25 χρονια
Και πολύ τυχεροί... Τέτοιες συναυλίες δίνουν πραγματικό νόημα στη ζωή!
One of the few bands I could listen to - every single day
The sound is incredible. Proper early Pixies. But the video is unwatchable after about 13 mins.
THE SOUND IS INCREDIBLE. I m just listening to it, not watching it. Well worth it!
Has to be the best Pixies ever to date!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best version of Dead I've seen. Definitely.
This is amazing - thank you for uploading!
I agree with ALL of that. I couldn't put it into words! Thank you.
The sheer energy is just mind-blowing. Thanks for this!

URIAH HIT THE CRAPPER! Actually the best damn primal scream in alt rock can be heard at 20:12. After that it is safe to go listen to On Graveyard Hill... or something. Actually I’d rather stay here and keep clicking on 20:12 for the LOLZ
Yes, it’s like The Scream by Edvard Munch but in musical form.
This was the time that Charles wasn't ignoring Kim yet by turning his back to her so obviously on stahe... Charles, you should know, Kim is a real goddess, little bit more respect for our girl from Dayton, you should be glad that she joined the pixies in the first place
wow, this is a gem!
