Sony literally went through their entire catalogue and said, "Hey, lets take the blind old lady in a wheelchair and make her Dakota Johnson!" and then proceeded to make a superhero film that rivals the shittiness of Morbius.

Them choosing Morbius and Madame Web has me thinking they're going through D-list characters from the '90s _Spider-Man_ cartoon. Why not better characters? Because they don't want to make superhero movies, they want to make CW specials.

A reminder that Sony has to keep pumping out "Spider-Man" movies or the rights revert back to Disney. Prior to the Tom Holland deal, they were in discussions to make a young Aunt May movie. They are probably choosing the ones they think could work as standalone movies rather than better/more popular characters who work less well as standalones.

What pissed off the fans of Madame Webb, is like, this was a perfect opportunity for Marvel and Sony. For one, Webb is, in comics, parapalegic and blind, operating around her conditions and disease. Like, in seriousness, that's always been a part of the character from inception. It was a PERFECT opportunity to show us something different. You could've gotten someone like Helen Mirren or Meryl Streep to play her, and ironically, even if they couldn't go the length of an MCU contract, that's totally works, because Webb does die in the comics, and uses her abilities to transfer her powers to another woman, Julia Carpenter.
The problem is this obsession with origin stories. Madame Webb is enigmatic, despite coming into comics in 1980, almost nothing is really known about her past life beyond the basics. She's a pre-cog telepathic mutant, she can astrally project her body, perform psychic surgery on the minds of others, her husband set her up with a life support rig that looks like a spider's web, and she has a daughter that eventually becomes Spider-Woman. THAT'S IT. 44 *years* of comics, and that's the whole of known background.
Sony just kicked all of that over to do the same bland crap that they always do with this stuff. Like, even in the era of wokeness, they could have *genuinely* portrayed the character as writtennd hit every single box they could have wanted. A powerful woman, disabled, facing a horrific disease, and still working to her best to help the world. I mean, COME ON!

Every episode he would critique a film and say "IT STINKS!" nowadays, people think 'words are violence' and to give a critique like that where a person's work/"art" is insulted is a hate crime and it's transphobia/sexism/terrorism/genocide. Literal what people will call you for being at all critical about someone else's opinion, then all of a sudden the focus is on YOU as the critic, and not this joker's poor excuse for 'art' or 'expression', it's all about how mean and intolerant you are to give an honest individual opinion about crappy work.
In other words, 'The Critic' or even 'Siskel and Ebert' giving 2-Thumbs-Down to a film would be see as too much for soft Gen Z or Gen Alpha to handle nowadays. The latter makes for an interesting movie in my opinion, as the protagonist can't punch their way to a win...when what they are facing against is an amorphous idea rather than some physical entity. Let's not even get into the ridiculousness of removing Spider-Man (and Captain America) from the "Maximum Carnage" storyline that was augmented and released as the "Venom 2" film. Just incredibly sloppy adaptation work all around.

TLDR: Sony owns Spiderman movie rights. Disney has permission to make Spiderman movies. Sony is trying to make Spiderman movies without Spiderman. They should stick with the Spiderverse movies.
As a rule of thumb, box offices generally needs to make 2 - 2.5 times the budget just to break even.
Edit to add: the studios often lies what the real budget is to save face for the investors. So the Marvel's budget could be double or triple thanks to reshoots, edits, and last minute crunch time for VFX. Valient Renegade and WDW Pro are the best to talk about this sort of stuff.

    • @danny9732
      @danny9732 7 місяців тому

@@janisir4529The 2.5 takes marketing and theater cuts into account. When people try to figure out movie profits, they make a couple mistakes.
One, they assume that the number that shows up when looking up “___ budget” is the official budget. That number doesn’t take marketing into (sometimes reshoots) into account which can be a considerable amount.
Second, they don’t realize that theaters get 50% of a movie’s earnings. Some studios, like Disney, have certain agreements with theaters on what percentage they can get during the first few weeks. However, the total cut a theater receives usually adds up to around half. That’s why movies need to make 2.5 times what it cost to break even

Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man and related characters. However, they made a deal with Marvel in which Marvel is essentially renting the character and making movies with him. As long as this deal is in place, Sony themselves can't make movies with Spider-Man. However, Sony is still able to make movies with characters related to Spider-Man, and they have been. These movies, which are usually focused on villains or side characters, have been widely disliked. Most people don't want to watch Spider-Man movies that don't include Spider-Man.

Basically Brett, in the 90s marvel comics were bad off financially, so they sold the rights to a bunch of their most iconic characters and those directly tied to them: Hulk went to universal studios, X-men and Fantastic Four went to Fox, and Sony got Spider-Man. That’s why the MCU started with then lower tier hero’s like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Cause they still owned those. Universal made a really bad hulk movie in ‘03 and Marvel leveraged a joint custody deal with them for the first MCU Hulk movie in ‘08, a deal that, I think, is still in place because Disney isn’t interested in another Hulk solo movie so the deal isn’t contentious. Fox basically milked X-men dry with more bad movies than good and aborted mission on Fantastic Four after a failed attempt at a franchise in the mid 2000s and a disaster reboot in ‘15, so Disney was able to buy them outright at the end of the 2010s, hence why the MCU is gearing up for both of those IPs to make their way into the continuity with new takes on them, and then there’s Sony. Who after the Raimi Trilogy fumbled the ending and poor Andrews franchise crashed and burned, leveraged a similar joint deal in 2016 that universal did so that Disney could introduce Peter in Captain America Civil War. However, Sonys greedy, grubby clutches won’t let go because once in a while they do something really good (the first Amazing Spider-Man was good and Spiderverse is universally adored), so they have been pumping out these low effort cash grab movies about characters in the Spider-Man wheelhouse that are usually his villains as a way to justify keeping the rights, while also making it more difficult for Disney to do what they want with the character because Spider-Man is contender for the most iconic and marketable superhero on the planet, and one of the most popular and iconic fictional characters ever made. People will ALWAYS go see a Spider-Man movie.

I actually saw Madame Web. I wouldn't say it's bad. I'd say that the quality of the writing and directing was not at the level of what's needed for a hit movie. It was Ok. My 7 and 9 year old daughters enjoyed it. Madame Web talks to herself and there's too much exposition, and most of the best action sequences occur in flashbacks, or (spoiler) flash forwards. That said, it really had a made for television quality to it. On the plus side for conservatives, it had a decidedly pro-life message whether intentional or unintentional.

With each they got all the characters, such as the X-Men and Spider-Man villions, etc. Us older folk, saw the 2000 X-Men and X-2, X-3: The last stand (Awful) and the Ramsey Spider-Man trillogy. Then in 2008 the MCU was accidentally created, when Marvel took out a 500 million dollar loan and built there own movie studio and made Iron Man. It made so much money, the loan was repaid and they made the second, then Thor. They kept making a ton of money and finished Phase 1 of the newly created MCU.

As long as those things came first you could slide in a political message, or some kind of commentary on the times, as long as it didn't eclipse the core aspects of why we go see movies. 2 things I absolutely cannot watch women do. Star as a super hero that beats on men, and lead singer in a rock band

Sony literally owns the rights to the Spider-verse. However there have been times where they have been willing to lend him out for other things, like the MCU. However, that almost didn’t last. After the first Spider-man movie succeeded, Disney demanded most of the profits and tried to claim ownership and buy the rights. However, Sony gave Disney the finger. Tom Holland himself has said his contract is primarily with Sony, but that it was also not so black and white. Everything Spider-Man related Sony gets most of the profit for it. Sony ALSO owns the MCU Villain-verse. So, all the MCU villains and anti-hero’s are Sony owned.

So the way it works is Sony owns Spiderman and Disney owns every other Marvel hero. When they make a Marvel movie with no Spiderman, Disney makes all the choices and decisions. However when they make one with Spiderman Sony makes the movie with Disneys input and they make it a collab that then both companies profit from Box Office earnings while Sony keeps the movies and rights to put it on their stream and make money from the streaming apps.
Apparently when they called Dakota Johnson and gave her the script it was different. She went to Elizabeth Olsen and after reviewing the script and and contract Olsen told her, "The script and money is good and its the MCU so I would do it". Then after she signed the contract, Sony basically threw away that script and rewrote it, while also going against/away from all of the Marvel/Disney recommendations, and turned it into this shitty movie. Since then she fired her team of agents, and basically stated she will not watch the movie, will not promote it more than legally obligated, and unless there is a dramatic change she won't come back. Had Sony listened to Marvel/Disneys advice they might have had a good movie. (excluding the shitty editing)
I can not confirm all of this however the agents and other parts have been confirmed so dont take this as the cold hard truth, but this is what is being said and going around.

I seem to remember when Dakota Johnson was promoting "50 shades" she acted even MORE like this. She straight up told people in interviews "Do not go see this movie" and she would go home to a glass of wine and just stare into space after a filming day. At the time I thought it just showed that she still had some shame left in her body for starring in such a movie. I guess she just isn't good at promoting work she isn't proud of...If she finds it so hard to find good movies to be in, she should just make one...or star in a daily wire movie :P

I need to push back a little here, because audiences keep saying they want new, original films for grown-ups, but is that true? Neon released Sanctuary a couple years back and it was well-received (on RT it's at 88% with critics and 87% with audiences), but it did less than a million in box office. We need to actually support the movies we say we want, because while people will talk a lot about what Hollywood wants, the biggest agenda in Hollywood is to make as much money as possible. Look up the top grossing films of 2023, because those are the movies that Hollywood will continue to put out.
Btw, Madame Web had a budget of $80 million and a worldwide BO gross of $91 million. Critics hated it (12% on RT) but some of the audience liked it (57% on RT). Not a success, but not a total financial disaster, either. Expect more of the same.

How hard is it to make a comic book story with decades of already written stories, even if a character needs some blanks filling in, where are the creative minds weaving clever arcs that pay off later? Where are the comic book fans working on these movies?

My biggest issues in the basic concept of the film, without even seeing it.
    1) the spider girls in this movie were all essentially kids in relation to Pete. And here they are like hot aunts???
    2) why shoe horn all three spider girls together in the same movie. They don't even have the same power sets, and it doesn't seem like they're gonna highlight those differences
    3) worst offense of all. I LOVE Ezekiel Sims as a character. But here they just sh@t on him by making him an evil Peter type. It would've made more sense to pit them against an inheritor

My boyfriend and I went to see this on Valentine's Day! We thought it would be fun to go see a really bad movie..... and proceeded to leave halfway through because it truly terrible. Movie was atrocious, and it also wasn't even advertised. I thought it came out last year with how little I had heard about it.
ALSO Brett Cooper needs to do a video about how terrible it is that Dakota Johnson is starring in a children's movie... after starring in 50 Shades of Grey!

I love how internet “reviewers” go and pay to waste their time and trash bad movies. Maybe they’d stop making garbage films if all these self proclaimed “reviewers” would stop giving these studios their money
