Exactly. I was genuinely concerned for her safety BEFORE finding out about his past. Having a kind and giving heart is one thing, foolishly putting herself in a potentially dangerous situation to do so is another.

She's so naive. I fear this particular story may take a dark turn. Especially if gefundme continues to keep the money frozen. He could get angry and snap while they're alone. And she still seems to have no sense of self preservation as she continues to be alone with him often. Bad feeling. And even if this turns out well. Her bad sense of preservation is going to get her hurt someday. Even now she doesn't seem to realise how close she came to a dangerous situation.
I once passed a homeless man who said "I'm so hungry. Could you spare a few dollars?" I said, "I just bought 2 sandwiches from the gas station. Here have one." He reluctantly reached out, grabbed it, looked at for a few seconds, scowled at me, threw the sandwich at me and said, "Man, this ain't money." I picked up the sandwich and went on my way. Bewildered at how a homeless man turned down a sandwich and acted in that way. He wasn't hungry for food. He was hungry for beer and crack. Im homeless now. I still wouldn't recommend giving money to the homeless. Most of them would off their mothers for a hit. If you're going to give money to the homeless, seek out buskers. (street musicians) They may be begging for money, but they are usually willing to pay you back with a song. At that point, you're buying a song. Everyone is happy, and at least the begging buskers are trying to earn their dollar, not beg for it.
A friend of mine once offered a homeless man money, I think a few dollars, and he said that wasn’t enough and kept demanding more. She said she couldn’t spare more and was sorry and he followed her on the street for a good 20 minutes or so after that from what she told me. She was terrified.

This is something I strongly agree with. So many people would tell me I’m a bad person because I just won’t hand a homeless money. That I should just trust them. I want to see these people get things like food and water because I hate to see someone starve, but I’m also not gonna hand someone some money so they can go and continue a bad habit instead of getting what they need. What if that person where to overdose on something with the money I gave them. How is that helping them? At least I know that if I hand a homeless person a burger and a water they can’t hurt themselves and they will get fed
@minimamadanielle9984 The homeless who are humble will thank you for the meal you gave them and become truly happy that there is a meal in an otherwise empty stomach. This scenario probably wouldn't happen very often, but there are those on the streets because of their mental conditions (which they can't help and I'm truly sorry for those) as well as those with drug addiction (again, the blame doesn't solely lie on them) and alcoholism. A lot of them turned to those drugs because they are on the street. Life is so bad for these people, they seek escape. It's terrifying out there. I don't blame them wanting to escape. I guess what I'm saying is I wasn't mad that he threw the sandwich at me. I was humbled knowing I wouldn't do that, and I truly felt bad for him. I'm not religious, but I wished him a better life and moved on.

Most people don't take the literal minute to do a bit of extra research. Like what her court case amounted to. She's reminding her local area that that man could still be a potential threat to the tiktoker and other people. I see nothing wrong with that, and people have to keep in mind. No matter how much time passes, she's still a victim. People sway their opinions for minority groups so fast it's crazy.

I work at a crisis center so I see a LOT of homeless people and many of them are VERY dangerous people. If you want to help, donate clothes to local shelters, canned goods or money to food banks, blankets to shelters etc. Help the people who help the less fortunate. The young girl being alone with him is scary.

People act like homeless people are all just down in their luck and deserve better, but some of them are in their situation because of their own choices and giving them a bunch of money is doing nothing to help anybody. People should instead donate money to shelters who actually take the time to see what the community needs and how they can be helpful without enabling.

Completely , I was homeless recently. There's some nice people on the streets but some of them, I couldnt believe the extent they will go to get what they want. Always trying to manipulate for gain, bold face liars

Agreed, in my old hometown of San Francisco you can see that 100%. Then again, SF is a literal shithole, sad because once upon a time it was a wonderful place. Why the world decided to get worse after 1990 is beyond me. The cold war was tense, but at least people were civil for the most part. Now we got people who want to overdose without a care, just live life to what they think is the fullest. Drugs and alcohol.

His reaction to her saying she raised over $150,000 for him is a little surprising. If I were homeless, even me as of now, and I was told people had raised over 100 grand for me I would be in tears, in complete shock, like what.
To be fair that is less to do with personality, more to do with expression. If I'd received such news, I'd be elated but probably just smile.
I live in my car , I work
3 jobs and have school. I can’t even get proper tips at my jobs, I bust my tail ! I’m a hustler at work. I’m not lazy , I work so hard. Ppl will order 100 in food and drinks , drop me a 5 dollar tip. It’s crappy. I bartend full time 50 to 70 hours a week, between two different bars. Plus HR remotely two days a week in the am. It’s alot.
Tips are nowhere where they used to be pre-Covid ! I just want 10 to 15% tops in tips and that is so far in between, Much less 150,000😂

I also agree that you shouldn’t just be giving out money blindly but back to my original point, are you gonna sit there and listen to their whole life story to decide if you wanna give them a dollar or not? I never carry cash on me so if I run into someone and happen to have a couple dollars on me sure I can help out but my first option is always asking if I can get them something to eat/drink rather than giving them money

First time I helped a homeless he proceeded to tell me he abandoned his wife and twelve kids. Then pulled out a crack pipe and told me never to have children. *They’re bad for you!*

The first time I helped a homeless person, they were later photographed buying a bunch of high tech stuff to resale.
The only time I’ve donated to a specific person since, he was wearing his Sunday best (a blue and white plaid button up and khakis and well groomed). He told me to have a blessed day. I don’t know if he was a fake or not, but I trusted him more in that moment because he wasn’t hamming it up like the ones that got caught.

i let a homeless lady order herself food at mcdonalds and she was the pickiest person ive ever met. she was making so many special requests and being difficult, i felt bad for the employees. then she started yelling at the lights on the ceiling... never again.
I live just outside a city with a lot of homeless. Truth is, many have a past, even a violent one, but that doesn't stop our community missions from helping. We pray for their turnaround. But always make sure you are safe first - not alone, but in public, ect. Many are not mentally well. That doesn't mean we don't help, but be wise, for your own safety! There’s a library that I love going to. It’s built on top of a parking garage in a beautiful part of town near a bunch of government buildings. I had three bad experiences there before I decided I’m not going there alone anymore or without being on the phone with someone. All three times, they were either mentally challenged, on drugs, or both. Every day, there’s about 10-15 homeless people waiting for it to open and they spend all day there. Some of them sleep under the awning of a rundown store. I know some homeless people are just down on their luck, but sometimes it’s just that they don’t have caregivers anymore after their parents pass away. Sometimes you can’t do anything for some of these people because they can’t be helped until they help themselves.

Yea we all have a “past” so I’m not sure what the point of this video was. If his “past” stopped years ago there is no need to continue to treat him terrible. God gives us all grace, we should do the same but also be cautious.

The most wholesome homeless man I met was when I went to an anime convention in California when I was 16 and a homeless man was not allowed in a 7/11 store so HE gave me his $1 and asked me to go into the store to buy him a cookie. I came back to him with 2 sandwiches and a cookie and he was grateful and asked for my name and called me a beautiful person
I never give $money$ directly to the homeless. You don't know what they'll do with it. Buy them food. Give them a snack, or a sealed water bottle on a hot day. Donate time, money, or materials to shelters. Hand out cash directly to the homeless person? Bad idea.

I remember there use to be a homeless woman who would stand at an exact intersection with a sign begging for money for years. Then one day it came out that she had an apartment and a car so yes these homeless people are definitely not who they portray to be a lot of the time
That’s a panhandler not homeless.. most that stand at intersections daily are just panhandling. In my city there 8-10 in a group that switch places throughout the day and at the end of the day will split anywhere from 8-1500$ they made bumming. They’ll even wear Jordan’s and name brand clothes and STILL people give them money.

There's a husband and wife couple in the town I used to live in that would stand on different corners by the freeway. I was told by a neighbor of theirs that she out of them to everyone. Their house was paid for and this is in a neighborhood where the houses are minimum 550-600k. They also had 2 very nice high end cars that were paid for. They made between $300 to $1000 every day begging, so of course there's no reason for them to get a job.
This is common where I’m at. There’s one guy that someone followed him to his car and he drove to his house after a hard day’s panhandling 🙄

I've been personally scammed by several "homeless" people. I no longer bother. Handouts don't help, if you want to help then volunteer and donate to the organizations that help those truly in need

Absolutely I've experienced a lot of terrible homeless people just existing. I've been stalked, chased, and threatened (even death and r@pe threats for not giving away money)
I saw a homeless pregnant woman being abused and snuck her away and brought her home. I fed her and offered her a shower and a bed. She used the restroom and came back to the living room and started to fall asleep during our conversation. I assumed she was exhausted until I found a dirty needle in the bathroom the next morning. I saw her in a friend’s Facebook video a few years later. She got sober and is doing very well. Next time I’ll be giving someone a sleeping bag, a tent, or a ride to the shelter. That girl and her baby could have easily died in my home.
At the end of the day homeless people generally have drug/mental/criminal past. It is fine to try help them, but you gotta be cautious people who have nothing to lose have little holding them back by doing whatever is best for them at the moment.

Just when I turned 19, I was in college straight out of CPS. Two weeks after my birthday I became homeless. I had no health insurance, ID, or anything other than what I could fit in the few bags I had. I stayed in homeless shelters for 8 months before I finally got back on my feet so I believe I can relate to the story more than the girl who helped Unc. I do believe in second chances, but I also believe when someone has history you have to be cautious of them until they prove themselves. Nothing should be handed for free unless you work for it. I do hope he changed for the best, but there is only one way to know if he did. God bless her for helping a soul out when they were in need, and even if they did do bad things in the past everyone still deserves to get help. I know at my age, not many people will think like that unless they've had to suffer and I don't wish that upon anyone. I'm only 21, don't suffer guys. Just be giving to those no matter what, and give them a second chance until they break it. God bless you all
Even in my teens, I thought similarly. I was lucky not to have experienced it, but helping others in need was taked about a lot in my family. I was told about people who scam, and to be cautious because yes the homeless are people and deserve to be treated kindly, but you never know what demons they have. I was taught to offer food and direct them to shelters and employment agencies, but never money. I'm 34, and it's still my policy.
My husband helps the homeless six days a week at our church it's a part of his job and he can honestly say that most of these people are drug addicts alcoholics or mental issues or a combination it doesn't mean he doesn't love them but he would never trust a lot of them with someone alone because of some of the choices that they have made or will make.
A homeless man I came across was asking for money so i asked why. He wanted a bus ticket to Arizona because they had a good rehab clinic. I bought him a ticket and gave him the details. He packed up his board (had been given lots of food by others so had dinner/breakfast) and left.
Another woman I came across was outside a Kroger and was asking money for her medication. We offered to buy her medication for her if she'd come to the counter with us. I have never SEEN someone waffle so hard. Excuse after excuse about how she needed the cash and we couldnt pay for her.
All that to say you can vet out who's a hustler and who's genuine if you have the time.
My first red flag would have been him praying for his "angel" to come back and his "letter" that he's supposedly writing her...odd....I'm uncomfortable with him...creepy ass lil dude

my mom helps homeless people all the time for years now and a lot of them will start liking her or even some stalkers. It’s normal to us now and honestly most of them homeless she loves and helps are violent or on drugs or criminals andddd like she doesn’t care she keeps feeding them 😊

Homelessness has changed over the years.. when I was a teen I wasn't afraid of the few homeless ppl I'd encounter they would ask for change, or a hot meal and go on their way

You'd be shocked man. When I was homeless there was something we called the "Golden dumpster" because of the gold jewelry we found in it so famn often. We made thousands off of thst single dumpster. It was all spent on drugs, but still. Theres a lot of help for homeless people (in most of america, no so much west coast) you can get by fine as a homeless person, but a lot of people don't want to get out of it

I spent a few years on the streets, and unfortunately the sad reality is a lot of them really do not have good intentions, or they got into that street mentality that they then get stuck in and do little to help themselves and eventually become the stereotypical homeless. Makes it harder for the few that are genuinely trying. Whatever the man's past, i hope he recognises this incredibly rare opportunity and changes his life. I still remember a guy who approached me and asked if there was anything that would make me happy that day, i was so shocked because i wasn't asking anyone for anything, in my surprise i simply said a Mtn Dew, wish i hadn't been so shocked because asking him if he'd use his phone to look up if there was anywhere that might hire me would've been more productive. Still human kindness goes a long way
This brings back memories for me... short term (pls excuse my poor english, I'm swiss). We took in an homeless person which seemed realy nice and helpless... He turned out to be an manica, crazy guy who assaultet us and threatend us with the police, screaming at us, thretening us (and our animals)... we will NEVER be kind to a homeless person again. We opend our House and our Hards to him and he disrispected us in the worste way possibel ... We live in Spain, he was from Lithauen... NEVER TRUST A HOMELESS PERSON... I will for shure never trust them again.

Threatening* i know letters sound the same in a lot of situations.

Worst* the E isn’t necessary because of the fact the “O” isnt making the “oh” sound.
Possible* with most words the “le” is spelled like that. Example (brittle, little, cradle, middle, bible) so on and so forth.
Sure* here is examples of when the “sh” sound is used (Should, Shout, shrine, shake, shin, show) english is complex.

As I was walking out the store once, a woman came up to me and said that she needed food for her children. She said she had just left her ex because he assaulted one of her daughters.
I offered to buy her eggs, milk, and cereal at the very least. She got angry, and said she wanted the money.

I think a deal breaker for me would be if he confessed to his past, or warned about it, before allowing her to go above and beyond for him. Like get some tea and food, whatever, but as soon as she started inviting him to a hotel and raising money for him, he should have mentioned his past and asked if she was still okay with proceeding with those actions
That man looks exactly like a homeless man I encountered in dc years ago who grabbed me in broad daylight wanting money. He was really aggressive and i had to push him away. Say exact area of dc too.

One has to be careful helping people like unk. I've done it a few times but they always need so much more than I can give..... and they keep needing and needing and needing until the relationship breaks down. Then you become the bad guy because you are "withholding the things you promised." It's not a fun place to be.... Honestly I don't plan on helping anyone like that again because of the things that have happened before.
I wholeheartedly believe people can be redeemed and shouldn’t be cancelled for their past. However, I hadn’t heard this story yet and was immediately concerned for this sweet girl’s safety. I appreciate that she is genuine and wanted to help him and perhaps this man could be a changed man. As a young college kid though, I absolutely wouldn’t encourage her to put herself in those situations alone. If drugs or whatever caused him to snap before causes him to snap again, I’d hate for her to be caught in the crosshairs. Where I’m at, if we wanted to help the homeless we always did so in groups just in case.
I don’t know what the timeframe is on when we can believe someone is redeemed, however, him beating that sleeping woman up wasn’t normal. Something caused that sort of rage be it substance abuse or mental health issues or whatever.

Even as I drove by a young woman wearing nothing but spandex and a sports bra running on the side of a busy road, I was mortified. Some women have no sense of self preservation. Yes, women SHOULD feel safe, but the reality is the world is dangerous, men can be dangerous, so don’t paint a giant target on your back to prove a point.

For the people who donated, I believe the best way to resolve this is by letting people decide for themself to get a refund or not. It should be up to the individual than for it to be up to someone's ideal of what greater good means.
Brett saying "everybody can have bad intentions" is so true, sometimes people will do bad shit without even thinking about it because it was just how they were raised or something similar to that...
I personally have had this happen, I've accidentally lead people on because I was desperate for some kind of love and attention (I was in a bad place after a girl cheated on me) and it hurt people... While not a crime like beating someone or stabbing someone, it kills me to think about it because I just don't like knowing that I could / can do something like that without even thinking twice about it. Playing with emotions because I needed to fill a void in my own, and crazily enough I didn't realize what I was doing until it was too late and it blew up in my face, deservedly so.
I've since worked on becoming much more mindful in situations where emotions are involved, both romantic and platonic, and am in general just doing better mentally as well.
Long story short, people definitely can change and I'm willing to give everybody a second chance as long as they admit their faults and wrongdoings, without that, there is no hope for change
I was homeless for a long time and I became friends with sooo many homeless people..we all had our struggles, but i accept every human for who they are not for what they have. Then I got stable and got my own place and it helped everyone as much as I could. I met this guy not homeless but was into the hood life but I was well familiar with it , I am street smart so I did not fear to date him. He had schizophrenia and my mind and heart was not worried about it . I told myself I can help him and make sure he takes his meds. Soon enough I let him move in with me and things were great , until it wasn't. He came home drunk did not took his meds and he beat me up so bad I almost died. My good heart will not spot helping and taking to homeless but definitely I pay more attention now to details . Be careful out there but don't lose the good of your heart. .. ps: in court I found out he was a red file abuser and very dangerous. But I forgive his soul and move on to help others. I won't stop

This is speaking from my heart. While growing up in the 70s, my family was truly dirt poor. My father woke up one day so disabled he couldn't work. If it hadn't been for charities and food banks, my siblings and I wouldn't be here today. Even so, we were often in need. So much so that it permanently damaged my mother's health. She often went without to make sure we ate. I'm telling this story to make you think. Today. Now. In this Day and Age, there are still children going hungry. There are still mothers going without in order to feed their children. You can help. The money you spend on coffee in a week can feed a family for a year. You could make a real difference in someone's life. Peace be with you all.

BTW, when my father had to go on assistance he went from owning his own company, pulling in a very good income, to unable to sit up on his own overnight. No one plans on being poor.
Hits home with me. I used to spend plenty of time in downtowns, in church hangouts and doing service projects. I know/knew people like him. I feel I know a bit of where his heart is. (I haven't studied stories - so I don't know where the man will wind up in 5 or 10 years. But it's good to see the dynamic duo, faithful to God, staying positive and not being selfish, and receiving help from so many who simply want to see him prosper and do well in the love of God.) Oh, well, 8:51 so maybe I spoke too soon. I think the gal is doing a mea culpa for her lapse in wise discernment, which wasn't a huge lapse (she wasn't aware that the gofundme would do so well). So now she's expressing sympathy for any women he's harmed and redirecting the money (that she happily/wisely did not give him in a lump sum?) to better causes. That to me seems like a win-win on par with what I expected from the first couple of minutes. She redeemed a monetary and public situation.
I immediately knew he was a sociopath/psychopath.
It's the dead, glazed-over eyes that always give it away. Couldn't stop feeling incredibly uneasy and distrusting of this shady guy. Don't believe a word he says. He's very cunning. I hate to say it, but given his past, who knows if he even has cancer.
I speculate people just take pity on him because he looks old and feeble. He knows this, and he uses it to his advantage.
Sociopaths/psychopaths are impossible to rehabilitate.
So knowing that he himself is incapable of feeling empathy, I personally don't feel much empathy for him at all.
Dang hundreds of dollars to a homeless man and my mom can’t even get her go fund me for my dead brother. She’s out here raising three children at the age of 58 and he doing drugs.
Seeing her alone with that man in the hotel room is terrifying. This is why I don’t bother trying to help random people. You can’t trust people blindly. If you’re going to donate your time and money, go to an animal shelter or woman’s and children’s home.
My brother is either in jail or homeless, due to mental health and addiction. We have put tens of thousands of dollars for treatment, rehab, lawyers, hotels, and etc.
I’ve been so jaded from helping homeless due to my experience with my brother. If I do give money, it as a not my business. I try to volunteer my time at shelters and soup kitchens instead. Sometimes do keep a gallon size ziplock bag in my car filled with necessities (socks, hand sanitizer Walmart gift cards, snacks and etc) and give it out to people. Just be careful out there guys a lot of homeless have violent past and could be high at that very moment of interaction.

I am an addict in recovery. I get doing bad things while using. But you can't just completely wash a past clean, or just blindly be forgiving.
this story is probably a really good case study or what to call it for high school students to talk about punishment, morality, redemption, rules and laws and all that. Easily relatable and it involves so many things.
Living in Portland the homeless bang on your window for money at stop lights. People don’t use the lane closest to the sidewalk anymore unless they don’t know. Now the homeless are making a path in the middle of the street so that we can’t avoid them. When I first moved here I would give them money but I remember one women in particular told me $20 was nothing to her and that I needed to give her more. I worked 2 hours for that money and that’s when I realized there’s no helping them. They go through our trash scattering it everywhere and throw rocks at cars as they drive by. I’ve never met a nice honest homeless person that everyone talks about them being. If they were honest people they would be working for their money. Not demanding it. People for some reason seem to forget that harassment is also a crime and every single homeless person on the streets in Portland harass people for their money. There are tons of people that don’t have enough money that are struggling to get by and aren’t criminals on the street. I grew up very poor and appreciate the help that was offered to me. I’ve never been homeless because I’ve never given up and decided that it’s time to start harassing people. So I say this not out of hate but out of common sense, stop giving to the homeless!

I offered an unopened bottle of water when I was going to secondary schooling and was taking the public bus system. The homeless man got angry I wouldn't give him money instead. I learned after a few encounters, that some choose to be there. This pushes those that really need help and want to get off the street onto the side. How can this problem be resolved? Reduce taxes so people can more than afford everything they need. It would be good start.

Giving help to waiter or waitress is 100x better for the world than someone who might be homeless due to mental issues or drugs.
They said it was unclear how he was released after his last halfway house or something. How do they KNOW this is the same guy? I'm not saying it's definitely not, but it's hard to say from these details that there is any proof that it is. Am I missing something?

I live in Oregon. Homeless people here are on another level. First off very few have any interest in not being homeless and second most are doing drugs every day. They are violent. I have been yelled at for being wary of homeless people as a fast food employee. One woman looked so proud of herself for making me cry. Anyway to give you context on one occasion a man threatened to r@pe me bc i wouldn't give him a dollar

Some people seem really naive, I work night security downtown next to a hotel and was told one of there female guests invited a homeless man to stay with her in the room she was staying in, even extended her stay there.
I work for corrections - People don’t realize that a huge portion of homeless individuals have criminal records, substance abuse issues. It’s unfortunate.
the fact that she knows he’s a felon and hid his past and now she’s soaking up the fame just shows how shallow she is.
I'm not a social media butterfly, this is the first I've heard of this. Nor do I watch the news. Now knowing this, I feel I made the right decision. I don't need to know EVERYTHING at a moment's notice. You make a great show, Brett, informative and fair. Keep them coming.
And she's still helped more homeless people than San Francisco's one billion dollar homeless agency.
Compassion is important. Using your brain and thinking and not simply responding to everything emotionally is just as important. It is a rare case that the homeless are that way just because of bad luck. Please be compassionate and be involved in helping the needy but temper your emotions with rational thought.

My heart breaks for this young woman and I’m BEYOND thankful Alonzo didn’t hurt her. I was like her when I was younger, naively trying to help. And I got hurt a lot in the process and blamed for my willingness to put myself in such positions. She is such a pure soul and even tho Alonzo is not a saint, it’s so refreshing to see good people 🥺😭

I thought intervention taught us all that the worst thing you can do for addicts (which the vast majority of homeless people are) is give them money and free stuff. If they never hit rock bottom, they never get their life together.
I have 7 years sober and you're 100% right. If my family bailed me out of jail or gave me a place to live in addiction, I'd never gotten sober. My MIL supports her meth addicted son in every way. He's going to die young because of her, "love and support."
The way she talked and expressed the whole thing sounded so fake....like FAKE...as if she's bored by it.
When you go through enough shit, which a homeless woman no doubt has, you aren't going to get particularly emotional about one specific instance unless it's especially traumatic.

I've never known a homeless person that didn't have some sort of mental health issue. It's always either drugs, alcohol, or some severe mental health problem like schizophrenia. Somewhat-well-adjusted people don't live on the street for very long, we have the mental capacity to pull ourselves out.

I've always wanted to help homeless folk in my city amd get a hotel room for them when it gets real cold (live in MN) but i can't trust a rando off the street with a hotel room and my credit card info on file. I can only imagine how south that would go.

I am happy to see the young lady helping people. One thing people forget is there is often a reason people are down and homeless, could be mental health or physical health, could be they are violent or they were taken advantage of, but you need to always be cautious of your safety when you help someone you know nothing about. I always stop and help people on the road but I am careful and take precautions as much as I can.
