A black Miura with gold wheels is certainly a black car I could love. I might even be able to keep it clean, not as clean as John's dad keeps it, but cleaner than my cars!

It's a little sad to talk about how much you love it then also say that you never drive it and wont let anyone see it.

I know there’s a Ferrari F40 that crashed years ago in the targa Tasmania. Owned by a collector on the north west coast. The car was sent back to Italy to be rebuilt/restored by Ferrari and the owner was told to never drive it like that again. The front window is also signed by Niki Lauda
There were stories of the contestants of the Cannonball getting passed by the locals in their regular rides because there is no speed limit on the Stuart Hwy & very few people that to most of the people in the territory doing 200+ in an old Ford Falcon was just a tuesday.
I know the last time I drove the Stuart Hwy, I set the cruise control to 200 & just sat back & watched the kms go by. I even got passed a couple of times. I wasnt driving a real sports car either, it was a stock standard Holden Statesman.

Considering he drove and enjoyed plenty other Miuras back in the day, I'm not surprised he wants to keep this one as a way to relive the joy of a brand new Miura, 40 years later.

Did he check the blinker fluid? Don’t forget that. Miura’s are known for failure in that area.
I've heard stories of Miura's muffler bearings going bad. Usually they fix/replace them during the annual 500 mile turbo encapulator servicing.
Yeah they tend to leak the fluid quickly leaving the blinker reservoir bone dry
Urine is a good substitute in a pinch if you're local O'Reilly's doesn't have blinker fluid.
I've heard that they are notorious for breaking their piston return springs

I have so much respect for your ability to tell a story about you dad. I was never really exposed to my families heritage or passions much growing up and it saddens me.
Wow this is the earliest I've been in a while. Love the Miura SV and I'm not surprised John has some great stories to tell.
This story makes me sad, this car is locked away and no one can see it, and it is never driven.
Same thing happens with some top art pièces. At some point in time Rio de will resurface and be showen to the world.
I’d much rather my great grandkids seeing this car rather than me.
The guy had 2 more Muira before this one so he drove the hell of it. If its a special car today, why would a 70yr old guy drive it as much as he did back in the day. Now he appreciates his hard work.

I've spent the last 10 years selling and restoring classic bmw's and Porsche's.
Recently I spent 2 years restoring a 1972 Porsche 911t coupe, it had sat in a garage rotting away for 15 years, when I finished the car it was stunning and ran like a dream.
When I put it up for sale, I immediately had offers. One person told me they wanted the car, and assured me that they where going to baby the car in thier collection and never even drive it.
To which I responded "I'm sorry I'm not interested in selling this car to you then"
Dumbfounded he asked "why"? I said" because, I spent the last two years bringing his car back from the dead, it had already been sitting for 15 years, I didn't do it for nothing, and I Didn't Do It For the Money this car needs to be driven and enjoyed"
I didn't sell him the car.
It's fascinating he was willing to dump his Miura S on a whim, but keeps his Miura SV for like 50 years, no temptation to upgrade.

@@bebin73 If you actually listened to the entire story, then you'd know, it was. Because of the color combo, the fact, that everything in this particular Miura SV was leather, that would have been vinyl in the Miura S at the time etc.

As with any collectable, the value goes down once you crack open that mylar packaging.
it isn't meant to be relatable. It's insightful how other people of other backgrounds, classes, wealth etc. can appreciate cars in different ways.

One minor correction. The 1972 New York Auto Show would have been at the N.Y. Coliseum, which was at Columbus Circle where the Time Warner Center now stands. The Javits Center didn’t open until 1986.

We're also quick to jump on pointing out that although Javits was open in 1986, the auto show was still at the Coliseum that year. Jacob Javits began hosting it in March or April '87. I've got pictures from both years and the lighting in the Coliseum made it look like a dungeon compared to the Javits.

I remember these cars being cheap when I was in college. What a great story! Very underappreciated at the time because no one would work on them and parts were so hard to get.

Driving through NY in 1972 in general deserves a medal considering how much of a hole it was during that time. With a Miura he deserves a parade

Well he most likely drove the shit out of the other Lamborghini so he’s gotten the experience and he wanted something to last a life time. Can’t fault him for that
At this point in time he's keeping it as more of an art piece. There's the driver cars which already have plenty of miles on them and have been thrashed on, and then there's cars like that Miura. A time capsule. Similar to an actual time capsule where items of a significant era are shoved into the ground in a box, never to be used or played with. However, the car world needs these time capsule cars to have the experience of owning a brand new Miura, but 40 years later.
Yeah...You don't love cars if you keep them in a garage you only like them. Drive the damn thing that's what they are designed for otherwise why would they sell them with an engine?

Now that is a great story - there are many cars I wish I had kept, but to have owned an SV from new for almost 50 years is the stuff of dreams. It would be great if when the time comes that John keeps it in the family and then passes it down to his son as well :).

I really like Johns stories I am 40 not understanding why for a timeframe Lamborghini Miuras we're not worth very much or like Lotus Esprit for a time you can get for $3,500 it's nice to see people start to appreciate these now if we can only get people to like the old early Volvos and Saabs
The early volvos have already started to become valuable here in sweden so it probably won't be long until it comes to the US aswell.

mine was a salvaged 2008 jaguar xk 4.2l supercharged v8 with 420 hp. i got it for $5500. surprisingly it never gave me any major problems.
i did a little body work which it really needed and an almost a year later sold it for $8500.

Imagine earning and saving enough to buy a car when you turn 16. In today's money a 12 yo could make $20 mowing a yard. 10 a week is $800 a month. With just that they could pay cash for a $40,000 car at 16. And that's without reinvesting or expanding.

Great story. I'm the same age as John's dad and I drove a 63 chevy 2 with three on the tree in 1972. Having a car like a Miura at that age would have been quite a responsibility but I think I would have driven the wheels off.

The only thing and it’s not meant as anything snide is the New York Auto Show was held at the Coliseum at Columbus Circle until the 1980’s. I loved going there and it was much easier on the feet in the smaller arena.

I can appreciate the love that he has for the car and being worried about damage being caused by things out of his control. It's just a shame that nobody else will have the opportunity to appreciate the car and him for the level of work hes put in to preserve it. Then you see the pressure that John is already experiencing as the future custodian of the car to keep it perfect, instead of enjoying it on the road.
I like your channel Im a new subscriber to “Savage Garage”and also “Vinwikis” My question is you mentioned that your father is from Massachusetts but I saw Connecticut plates on the black Miura does your family also come from Connecticut i’m about 45 minutes going south from New Haven in about 10 minutes heading north from Stamford
