Today on JD Cars we’re tackling the inevitable N55 valve cover replacement! These BMW valve covers typically last around 100,000 miles, and with my F30 approaching that mileage this was a piece of preventative maintenance that I wanted to take care of. Overall, not a terribly difficult procedure but definitely allow ample time as this job can consume several hours. Check the links below for parts and recommended tools! Thanks for watching! Stay motivated 🤟

Really great video. I've watched 3 now and this is easily the best concise video. Thanks! I can change mine tomorrow with confidence.
Thanks Allen! I'm glad the video was helpful! I hope all went smoothly with your replacement 🤟
Thanks for making this video! I’m going to do this on my F10 N55
You're very welcome! Best of luck with your install!
This is quality stuff. well done sir
Much appreciated!
Had similar issue with my E90.. Good job JD👍👍
Thanks brotha
Great maintance vedio! Greetings from a Watch restoring guy
Thank you! I hope the video was a help. Much respect for your watch restoring career and best of luck!
Thanks for making this video! I think I might try replacing the valve cover gasket on my 2016 435i Gran Coupe.
You bet! I hope it helps. Good luck!
Is it lucks?
Great diy. You really go into detail and go over things a lot of others forget to or don't bother. Learned quite a bit from this. You would make a great teacher.
Keep up the good work 👍
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!!
Always disconnect the negative terminal .. you made a mistake by taking off the positive terminal..
This might have fucked my car up.
Thanks for the vid. which other parts did you purchase other than valve cover kit? part numbers if possible. thanks in advance. my ride 2015 435i grand coupe
Thank you, replaced my valve cover gasket on my 640i following this video, when removing valve cover the plastic piece that clips inside valve cover disconnected from valve cover, reinstalled valve cover without putting that plastic piece back on inside valve cover ! (Forgot about it)
How important is that for functioning of the car ???
Thanks
Im replacing my gaskets this week on F30.
Hi I’m Rob, was just curious to know if you had a check engine light? And also, did this fix your problem? I’m suspecting my cvv also. Please let me know, thanks!
Great video, helped me allot but do you know the torque values for the strut braces?
Glad it helped! Sorry, I don't recall the torque specs
Hi. What's the part number of the valve cover with the gasket pre installed?
bit.ly/3Ckq8MM
That pass side extreme rear bolt was borderline impossible to snug down!!
It's a tough one! A combination of wobble extensions works well!
Confused what "pic" valve you said was broken that can't be replaced?
There is an internal valve, within the valve cover itself. This valve didn't end up being broken in our case, but can sometimes fail and is not designed to be replaced independently.
After doing this job I ended ups with MAF sensor code, misfire in cylinder 5
Carefully check your electrical connections to both the MAF sensor and cylinder 5 coil. Also check the wires for any breaks.
Did this fix your problem though?
So, my 535i 2015 bmw doesnt have those vacuum lines on the side of the valve cover, neither that little stufd that you dropped and i just ordered and installed a brand new valve cover, i will suppose that since its EWG it doesnt need those lines, correct me if im wrong please
You're good
I believe you're correct-- those were present on my model because of the PWG
Hey JD Cars. Did you happen to have misfires and a stumbling idle? So far I’ve I replaced my plugs and coils. Along with 2 injectors for cylinder 5 and 6. Still get combustion misfires. Most noticeable in reverse and slow speeds. When I disconnect the MAF it smooths out and I get no misfire codes. I’ve swapped MAF sensors with a friends car and that didn’t help.
Did you ever solve this? What codes, if any are you getting?
That's strange... Did you try cleaning the MAF sensor?
I had these same problems my car would idle really weird I would unplug the maf sensor and the car would run fine I got it smoke tested and found out I had a boost leak it ended up being a being my turbo Inlet I changed it with a homie of mine and it was all good
Where i can buy this kit?

Great job! the thing that i really Do Not understand, it why?? why ? why? would any Mechanic or Technician use the/a OEM top pan Gasket again, after it has proven to not do it job??,.... remember this OEM top pan gasket is the reason (in most cases) there is oil leaking down from the top pan on the hot exhaust.... so using the same OEM Gasket.... the same thing is and will and is going to happen again.... i never saw anything anywhere in writing from BMW that this NEW replacement gasket is of a different composite or modified in any way..... so your/mine vehicle will leak again in the future... ty great video sir.
what 'better' brand did you use?
@@RingerRacing ,Felpro( which is a reputable company)... cost is double. but if it permanently fixed this problem.. all good!! so lets see, at least i tried anything but OEM....so..ya..... ty
OEM parts are the most trustworthy, and even if this valve cover fails another 100,000 miles from now, it is covered by the FCP Euro lifetime warranty 😎
@@JDCarsChannel , Well, i have been a shop owner myself for 20 plus years and has been into the Auto industry since i was 16 years old and worked at the engineering side of life all of my life... My personal Opinion is only "my Opinion and "logic" thinking, why would i replace it with OEM? Honestly... BMW is and has been having this /inherited" problem for foreverrrrr. it was never rectified by BMW Engineers ( think about it, A Human can send a spaceship to the moon and back, but he/she cannot invent/make a good gasket composite? The thing is BMW continues to have leaks in many places on their engines, which is a pure embarrassment for, what i would think a "top class company/ with very expensive vehicles. All because of a gasket composition problem???. So the OEM Gasket itself is really not the "most trustworthy" at all. I personally will "not" use OEM Gasket ( i dont like doing my same work repeatedly, i personally did learn of these types of issues in the automotive world and changed things accordingly), As to reference with the Valve Cover, I keep this in mind when i am needing a New Valve Cover,, ty, for response and input
@@battlehrfred im def not paying $650 for the kit @ FCP , did you not replace your valve cover and only the gasket ?
Way easier than the E90
Really!? Why is that
Just the fact that it took me about 1 hr to clear the back left corner on removal.
F30!
Yes!!
