Just Me look up Shore’s resume and compare it to Williams’. I love lotr score but one awesome score does not trump a lifetime of awesome scores. Name me three great Shore scores besides the trilogy and for every one you do, Williams has a dozen more.

Williams is the greatest movie score writer of all time. Yes, Richard Rodgers (Sound of Music) is a legendary composer, but at the end of the day, Williams wrote the music that has become part of everyday life. And Jaws theme. That's THE most recognised and iconic piece of music ever written in the history of mankind.

I never watched Saving Private Ryan, I'm not even an American, but I admit that this is the only fully instrumental orchestration, without any lyric, that can make me burst into tears. One of the best masterpiece from John Williams. Magnificent.

    Dear Madam,
I have been shown in the files of the War Department, a statement by the adjutant General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of 5 sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine that would attempt to beguile you of the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from rendering to you the consolation that made be found, in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have ever laid so costly a sacrifice upon the alter of freedom.
    Yours very sincerely and respectfully,
    Abraham Lincoln.

To read this, whilst listening to the overwhelmingly evocative, emotional piece that is John Williams' "Hymn To The Fallen", lays bare the raw sense of loss that must have been - and still is - the burden of so many mothers down the generations. Words can never be enough.

@@robertlestylo6085 It's the mother's that are the heroes, I was in Nam 67 & 68 Army. When in base camp for resupply & rest, I would play reel to reel tapes from home. While my dad (a fighter pilot in the USAF) brought me up to date about family, I could hear my mom crying in the back ground. It tore me apart. I was lucky to return home & many of my brothers gave the ultimate sacrifice , 67, 68 & 69 were very costly. On the way home after my parents met me at the airport I remember my dad saying " well mommy you can sleep tonight, your son is home safe". The music is beautiful, but it needs to be remembered that it was written to honor those Americans who died to end the tyranny and barbarity of both nazi Germany and imperialist Japan, both of which were evil and worthy of neither my respect nor my sympathy. It is not ironic that perhaps the best rendition of this masterpiece on You Tube is by a German orchestra. I think the piece now stands as a tribute to not just the Americans who perished in the great conflagration we call WWII but to all the young men and women of every nation that never returned.

Since the beginning of time, fallen soldiers have been the greatest victims. Young men sent off to war upon promises of glory and honor only to be laid low by horrific sights and experiences that NO person should ever witness. Young men who wanted life and liberty... only for it to be robbed of them by greedy old men who cared nothing for them.
    God bless them all.

Pretty sure civilian casualties usually outnumber military casualties in most wars, including the one this song is about. Civilians suffer the same horrific sights and experiences without even training nor weapons. A lot of times after a sacking of a city, you could argue their fate is even worse than that of a common soldier.
I think the innocent young boys vs greedy old man trope only extends to the most recent wars. Looting, sacking and rape were kind of big motivators for most soldiers since the beginning of time. Not to mention the ability to capture slaves. pretty much the opposite of yearning for life and liberty.

GREAT job by the orchestra brass in the chorale section at 2min in! the irony of this video, is the passion conveyed by this great german orchestra despite the extremely sad history of it's nation in the narrative of this movie.

Why should this song only be for the victorious countries?Germany along with its allies had a generation who died for a cause in which many did not believe in, but simply were born at the wrong place in a wrong time. Many of them had their own stories, lived their war, had their loved ones. There is no irony in playing it for all the fallen. I'm sure you get what I'm saying.

This plaintive and emotional piece by Williams pulls at the heartstrings of anyone effected by war directly or indirectly. There are truly no winners in a war when you consider all the families who may have lost a loved one as well as the countless soldiers with physical and psychological scars who return home.
This beautiful orchestration is one of the best renditions I have heard under the superb baton of Ulf Schirmer conducting the Munich Radio Orchestra and choir as part of the Cinema in Concert series which in this case has segments of Saving Private Ryan projected behind the orchestra.
Special credit should be given to the technical crews who have placed microphones expertly in the auditorium and mixed the sound for clarity of instruments as well as the superb camera operators/switchers. Through their efforts, it’s difficult not to become emotionally vested in this production. Bravissimo! 👏👏
