We did our first “fetch” session with our rescue today! I thought we would never get her to stop biting our legs, but 15 mins on a long line + throwing her tennis ball (the only toy she knows how to play with) and all of the sudden, she’s no longer biting. Your videos and book are saving my legs, arms, and hands!! Thank you so much!

I take my three Shih Tzu to the park every day and I’m commented to constantly about how good they are how well they listen and how sweet they are! I owe it all to you Zack! Granted one of them is 17 and probably didn’t need any more training he still has responded beautifully! The other two at 9 1/2 months and a year and a half are the most amazing dogs and it has brought such joy to my life! Thank you very much for sharing all of your knowledge. I have an 8 month old pup and we live in the city so we don’t have a fenced in yard but we live about a 3 minute walk from a soccer field! I recently ordered a 30 ft leash for her because I don’t yet trust her to listen to me (it’s a work in progress!), and I’ve been taking her to the field the play fetch and it’s helped soooo much!

Zak you should make more videos about getting a dog from a shelter. Too many people just assume everyone gets their dog from a breeder. Also, I've been looking for a good dog from a shelter for a while and it's hard so talk about that too. Sometimes shelters are very non inclusive and a first time owner like me or someone without a fenced in yard can't get one from a shelter because they are too strict with their requirements. I think more people need to know about things like this

    • @beckylietzow
      @beckylietzow 4 роки тому +11

That’s because dogs from the shelter will often have behavioural issues from being abandoned or abused or being in a shelter in general. They need a pet parent with experience who can handle these problems and won’t be giving the dog back to the shelter , because that would only worsen the dogs trust in humans.. But I’m sure if you keep talking to the shelter and showing interest and show that you educate yourself, they could maybe find the right dog for you after all. Keep trying keep learning! ✌🏻

I got my first dog from a shelter when she was 6 months. She’s a year and a half now. She definitely came with issues and it took her close to a year to even cuddle with me on the couch. If you plan on getting a dog from a shelter be prepared to work with them for the long haul in terms of their trauma and behavioral problems. But, they are definitely worth the extra love and care

His videos and approach won't help many dogs that have behavioral issues or are under socialized. He is only good for people starting from scratch with more natural confident dogs. There are plenty of other dog trainers that can help and be more sensitive to deal with rescued dogs.
Search for Kikopup. She has amazing border collies and also rescued dogs that used to have severe behavior issues. And she managed them like a real pro and still very sensitive and gentle about it. :)

You guys are lucky enough to have this much open space and fresh air.
I live in the Middle East where it's burning summer for about 6 months and not a lot of outdoor dog friendly places. My 4 month old rescue pup gets a bit hyper when I'm not able to take her out everyday (not to mention vets seem to advise against taking young pups out when their immune system is still developing) and starts chewing everything, or snapping at our ankles. Toilet training also poses a HUGE challenge with apartment living.

This info is so interesting. My dog is a rescue and because he was mistreated he learned to guard resources. When I try to get him to play he guards the toys and he growls and tries to bite. Our other training is not going great, spotty at best. I finally got him to walk properly on the leash. I finally got him to the point where I can put my hand in his bowl of food & he loves to be hand fed. But "leave it" isn't going so well and if a treat falls on the floor, I had better keep my fingers out of his way. I don't know if I will ever get him past these issues but I keep trying.

Hey Zak, love the series, I have a Border collie 1y 9 months, great companion, tons of energy. Ren loves the Frisbee but sometimes gets bored with it (not to often). You mentioned Inertia sometimes gets bored with the frisbee. Have you tried any of the large herding balls or egg shaped ones. They are made of hard plastic so the dog can not cheat and just pick it up with their teeth, it forces the dog to move the ball with their nose or body. Ren loves them, we have him work the ball back to me. Not only does it relieve a lot of his energy in a short time it also really stimulates his mind, because of the concentration he needs to work the ball/egg back to my location. Maybe just a little suggestion from us, since you help us as dog owners so much.

I’m going to convert to frisbee from my tennis ball thrower. Its valuable to get her to catch vs chase the ball

Long-time fan I was watching your videos six years ago when I got my GSD Stella. You really turned me from ok to pretty good. After some basic clarification on terms she really became an avid fetcher and it was our daily activity for years. Unfortunately she tore an ACL a couple years ago and we couldn't have it fixed, partially because it seemed unrealistic she wouldn't hurt it again because of some quirks she has.
Now she can't really do anything without hurting it so I'm looking at amputation but it's still outside my budget right now. I hope to be able to have it done early next year. I think it has really hurt her feelings that our relationship has essentially changed so much and she doesn't understand why.
Sorry for the shpeel guess I just needed to get it off my chest.

I would love to have a place like this to play with my dog.
Dog parks here are very rare and full of other dogs. And other places usually are not dog friendly.

You are totally correct in this. If your schedule allows, try do parks at off hours. Another option is Church parking lots are an option. They are usually vacant except for Sunday and at worst they will just tell you not to use the lot for fetch - no police calls etc. Almost always, nobody will say anything.

Without twice daily fetch my B.C. is very high strung. ( Paces, will only settle for a few minutes, always staring at me etc.) With it, she is as close to a perfect dog as possible. You're fortunate you can use a ball park for fetch. Ours are dog prohibited, if they are open at all.

What is your favorite dog frisbee? Some disc golf companies have dog lids in much tougher plastic that can stand up to dog teeth a lot longer. Try the Latitude 64 Bite. 👍🏼

Zak I have been watching you fir sometime now.I love every thing I have seen.. Thank you so much for all the hard work you and you wife do. I have a Mini Aussie… And arthritis of the knees and hips so I’m not as agile and jumpy around as you are… My husband is of course when he comes home in the evenings… But during the day I feel so guilty she just sits and stares at me we do little things like I was tired to sit up and touch and talk to me little things like that but I know she’s so much more… Plus my next question was do you have DVDs on training I’m sure you do I’m just not finding them somewhere… Again thank you so much for all the work you both do.. 🙏
