  • In this video I'm taking a closer look at my new Sonicware SmplTrek, and I'm talking about how using the very simple concept of "first principles" can make you learn any device in a faster and more fluent way.

1000 times yes! Simplicity and the pure joy of messing with sounds are the things which excited me a lot when I dived into the dawless world for the first time. It’s very important imo to save this feeling and I’m glad that there’s people with the same mindset🤝

You make a really good point. In art, instead of subscribing to epic programs of repetition and practice, they say to just start making things you love. Maybe the fundamentals are the same in music where the important part is just to make a thing.

Exactly... It's so easy getting locked into specific techniques or wanting to do things like specific artists, and sort of start in the wrong end of things, and end up just digging a creative hole it's hard to get out of. Thank you for commenting :)

    This thing...looks AMAZING.
If i ever did get it, do i need some sort of (annoying) special software subscription,
or can i use it as-is or easily with my pc and import it so i can further tweak my sounds for free MY way?.
Basically i am really curious if they're going to squeeze the life out of me for more money by being
like how some companies are like "well you can buy it but you also need to buy our software for it or subscribe to get anything actually useful out of it"
i just wanna make awesome things and i LOVE music that is made like that...i have SO many ideas,
but the thing is, audacity and a keyboard that only can save songs you played to a USB and can't directly connect is...not easy to work with...lol.
i want to finally be able to go outside and be like "BRO THIS SOUND SOUNDS LIKE I COULD MIX IT INTO A SAMPLE FOR SOME COOL MUSIC!!!"
and be able to ACTUALLY do it properly.
i have some experience crudely overlapping sounds and whatnot to do something similar but again...audacity and sad digital piano is not ideal.
i am willing to pay (if this device is truly ideal like how i would wish) but i can't afford to be buying subscriptions or crazy-priced software.
(or buying additional devices FOR it, however i can buy a cable ofcourse if it needs one).

Hi. There is no additional costs with this device. No subscriptions or anything like that, which is awesome. I also hate the entire subscription model all new software seem to have. The only additional costs would be an SD card, headphones, and AA batteries if you wanna use it on the go. It does come with a power cord, so you don't have to use batteries.
There are a couple of draw backs however. It uses micro USB instead of USB-C and you can't power it through usb.
Aside from that, it's a really good device. It has a built-in speaker and microphone and is compatible with MIDI keyboards and other gear. And you can also use it as an audio interface

Wow that is great!, thank you for telling me what i needed to know,
And what a good thing that i already have those things to go with it!, i can finally put them to better use.
that is SOOOOOOOO cool, i am proud of whoever made that thing, creative tools that aren't buy then pay-to-use-happy are suuuuuper cool!.
Also, for the future when i have it: thank you for the video, it's very informative and you did a good job!, it is sure to help anyone interested.

Chord mode, scale mode and sounds and a DAW. Great gear set up with Logic and Maschine plus? I want a setup at my desk ready to go at all times. Including a mic for vocals

smpltrek+small mixer +one multieffect (zoom pedal or nts1?)+mic is a songwriting beast. ditch
the mixer part if you dont have hardware synths

    How you like the workflow?

I actually really like it. The interface is almost like a DAW, so very familiar. But there are a few limitations when it comes to FX and stuff, and no LFOs. But it's okay since I usually pull the projects into Ableton for finishing touches anyways

Do you pull in the tracks 1 by 1 into your DAW? Or do you rebuild it on sample level in your DAW? A tutorial on the whole process would be insightful. I don’t have a DAW but see it as the next logical step in music production. I like the tactical interface of the SmplTrk. Beats clicking around w a mouse to making music IMO.

I import the stems, so each individual track, into the DAW. And then I have more control over each parameter. But you can still do a lot without a DAW. The audio in the video is just raw audio from the SmplTrek. But if you want to go deeper and add more FX, you'd want to use a DAW

@@flundlip yeah I agree. The SmplTrek is great for sketching everything out. It's my gateway drug. I'll be adding a DAW to the mix sooner or later but I'm just having fun trying to get the most out of this thing. Looking forward to actually doing some vocal recording on it one day. I like the rawness but at same time how capable this lil thing is. Thanks for the response.
