Hi Julie! I randomly came across your channel after a strong late night craving for dakgalbi due to looking through old videos and photos of my Seoul trip last year haha! You seem so sweet and bubbly! Thank you for this recipe, I will attempt to make this tomorrow night!
This summer I'm going to move into a dorm where I have to cook for myself and I'm so excited! I'm putting together a playlist of food I want to try and most of the videos in it are yours! You explain stuff thoroughly and all the food you make looks delicious! Thank you for the uploads!
Oh wow... thanks for letting me know. I'm sorry I'm just getting back to you now but I've been busy with a new baby! Hope you got to try out some of my recipes. I appreciate your encouraging comment :).
I first ate it at a Korean restaurant while in China! Then it went to Korea and ate it there! This is one of my top 3 meals of all time. It brings back so much good memories! Thank you so much for this. I'm so excited to make it at home.
Looks absolutely amazing. Your version of the fried rice looks fantastic. I love this two-part meal and next time I make it, I'm going to make your version. Thanks again for another terrific vid.
Im from Japan and just made this dish. It was sooo delicious. You are my favorite chef on UA-cam. I love your channel!!! Thanks for sharing this recipe! :)
I spent 6 months in South Korea last year and while there was so much great food, 닭갈비 is definitely up there with one of ones I miss the most. The food is amazing and the whole dining experience between the main dish and the fried rice afterwards is just ... I don't know. It was almost therapeutic in a way. Hard to describe. The restaurant I frequented for 닭갈비 didn't do the melted cheese, but they did fry an egg and put in on the rice. Very delicious.
+PiroMunkie I miss Korea too. I only spent about 2 months there last summer, but I fell in love with everything! A fried egg on top would be excellent!
+Esther An Yup! I remember you guessed right when I posted that teaser pic... good job! :) Yes the goguma in the dish adds the right amount of sweetness...which goes well with the spiciness!
Tried this recipe and it was very tasty. I am not a fan of cheese over Korean food so I would probably skip that next time but the fried rice after the first course was awesome. I also added more gochujang(chili paste) since we like things spicy. Thanks Chef Julie!
Aw that's nice of you to say. We have two videos out about making videos. Check them out: 10 Lessons We Learned from Filming Season 1 of our Cooking Show: ua-cam.com/video/M3-p55Tu9bk/v-deo.html
it looks so good i will definitely be making this soon :) i actually made bibimbap in dolset bowls at home last night and it was so delicious!! I made the gochujang sauce mixture from scratch and it came out so bomb! love me some korean food :)
Lovely! You explain it very easily! I wish I could make this recipe but I live in Brazil and I don't know if we have some of the ingredients here, like the red chilli pepper paste, the mirin or the rice cake...
Can someone please explain why some people put all ingredients at once and some others put the meat first or like this video just potatoes and bit of cabbage first ? Like does it matter? I don't know which one to follow. I worry the meat won't be well cooked when putting all ingredients at all (and cabbage, tteok would be cooking too long!)
At English Little Land in Incheon there was a restaurant on ground floor below the Hogwan and it made the most incredible Korean Dishes. Other than Bulgogi I would eat everything made there. Once again gamsahamnida for the time traveling experience dear Julie.
I miss Korea too. I visited for a month and tried to eat and study everything I could because the food was SO BOMB. I love watching back our Korea series vlogs as well because it brings me back to those fond memories.
@@ChefJulieYoon I am not surprised ... Out of the many countries that I had the opportunity to visit Korea thus far is my favourite ... Thank you for a most delightful channel and for your wonderful personality. Blessings D
chef Julie! I just found your cooking videos and fell in love with the whole series. You make the cooking and food come alive + plus your bright personality + clear explanation + personal stories + your chemistry with Joe + your sense of humor (yes! I also hope they make a perfume out of that sauce! and steaming facial haha) As a passionate cook myself (globalized Korean), I just wanted to give you a shout out from Bangkok. please keep on making these videos, I've watched thousands of cooking videos online and TV but yours is one of my absolute favorites!! do you use instagram? I hope one day I can learn to cook from you Chef Julie! :) musichef TJ-
Yes I saw your comment on instagram too...thank you!!! Wow... what kind words of encouragement... I am truly flattered and so grateful that you took the time to write that. So glad you enjoy our cooking videos and we hope you continue to stick around for more content!
When I was in Korea, my Korean co-workers brought me to a restaurant that serves 닭갈비, and consumed it up until the frying cooked rice.. 너무 맛있서요~~ i would like to try this superb dish~🤗🇰🇷🙏🏻😍😘🍜
This is definitely happening on our next Korean food night YUM. My Korean mom has been obsessed with putting cheese on everything lately, she even loves to put it in her spicy ramen and chapagetti 😂 I'm not so on board with all that yet, though.
+Meeshyah Ha... I'm not on board with adding cheese to my ramen too! I wonder why! But your Korean Mom definitely knows what's up by adding cheese to spice!
Thank you for the recipe! This looks pretty spectacular. Even though I have no clue when I might make this, since I can't really afford to buy so many new ingredients at the moment, I still really enjoy watching your videos :)
+Yeae Gi Park still find it funny that we posted about Dakgalbi around the same time. Yeah I was surprised by that little tip too and it really makes a difference!
This dinner my girlfriend made this recipe It's really really amazing Thank you so much from both of us Chef Julie Yoon ( She try to send thank you to you but it's error) love from Thailand ❤
Unfortunately they didn't...but I've seen other videos where certain restaurants did. The fried rice at the end changed my life...with that cheese...oooo!
Tried this recipe without the perilla leaves, double the amount of hot pepper flakes plus a couple of minor adjustments. It was bomb! APlanning to make the fried rice tomorrow as we ended up eating too much of it with some steaming rice on the side. Will be making this again! :)
First you eat spicy chicken, vegetables, and soft rice cakes smothered in cheese. Then you eat fried rice made with the leftovers.....you're welcome ;)
+Daniel Law Korean red chili paste is hard to replace because of the unique texture, flavor, and consistency. But if you don't have it and really want to make this dish, you can use a little bit of Sriracha or Chili garlic sauce plus a little sweetness. It definitely won't taste the same, but it might still be good.
This really is sooooo yummy. I made it yesterday. Thank you! I'm mad I bought the mushrooms and forgot to add them. Guess I need to make it again before they go bad ... ;)
You should be able to, but I'm not sure how the squares would convert. You can look up the written recipe (direct link in description box) and try to use your best judgement... or maybe there's some sort of conversion for how many tablespoons is in one square of curry online somewhere.
I've never tried it with firm tofu before, but I can imagine it might be good! I love firm tofu too. If you give it a go, let me know how it turns out!
You can substitute mint and basil for the perilla leaves, but for the rice cakes and Korean curry, no substitutions.. sorry! Just add more potato... or just eat it over rice. And you can try it without the Korean curry powder but the taste will be really different. It's the secret ingredient!
It's called the "Shun Ken Onion" and it's no longer available for some reason, which makes me sad because I love it too. But here's a list of the kitchen tools I recommend and maybe you can find something similar: chefjulieyoon.com/resources/kitchen-tools/
Oh dang!!! Okay..I know Shun knives, I own some and love them...and I know about Ken Onion! He designs knives for CRKT. I love his designs. I honestly didn’t know he did some kitchen knives. I definitely would have jumped on a few. You’re DEFINITELY very lucky to have that design from him!!! Now I’m jealous..LOL!!!!
Yes, there's enough flavor in everything else that it should still taste delicious. Sorry to hear about your allergy... didn't know you could be allergic to garlic!
I am new in my journey at experimenting with cooking Korean food, and one aspect that truly makes me nervous is using "paste" and various kinds and how much is too much..... I plan on learning tho

did your restaurant also make a heart with the fried rice at the end? lol. ^______^ korean comfort food. :)

Questions. If I don't have Korean red chili paste. What is substitute for this? Thank you

Julie, where can I purchase the stove top? I love the presentation idea; I could also use if for my paella.
I got mine at a Korean market but I'm sure you can find it on Amazon. It's a portable butane burner.
Thanks!
Can I use the curry blocks if I don't have the powder? If so how many squares?
You should be able to, but I'm not sure how the squares would convert. You can look up the written recipe (direct link in description box) and try to use your best judgement... or maybe there's some sort of conversion for how many tablespoons is in one square of curry online somewhere.
Looks delicious!! Do you deliver!!!???
Do u know when the gripping tong avail to buy
Are you talking about the Seoul Mom Approved tongs from my review video? They are no longer selling them as it was only for a limited time....sorry!
Can you use firm tofu as a substitute for the chicken ?
I've never tried it with firm tofu before, but I can imagine it might be good! I love firm tofu too. If you give it a go, let me know how it turns out!
hi what is korean curry powder called in korean? also which brand do u use?
it's called ottogi curry powder ^_^
What if I don’t have mirin? What can I use to substitute?
You can substitute with a sweet sherry, white wine, or even chicken stock, and add in a pinch or two of sugar.
Julie, what can I substitute for the soy leaves, rice cakes, and the Korean curry? I do not have a Korean market in my area.
You can substitute mint and basil for the perilla leaves, but for the rice cakes and Korean curry, no substitutions.. sorry! Just add more potato... or just eat it over rice. And you can try it without the Korean curry powder but the taste will be really different. It's the secret ingredient!
what can I substitute miri with?
You can use a sweet sherry instead if you don't have mirin.
what is korean sweet potato? is it the same in american / oriental super. market store?
+Xying Lin the white sweet potato, not the orange! you can find them at any asian supermarket
They are really good! More the texture of a white potato and sweeter than an orange sweet potato
whats the name of your pan
+Raj Nar I used a Cuisinart straight sided skillet for this video.
I love your chef knife!! Who made it??

I have an allergy to garlic will the recipe be the same without it
Yes, there's enough flavor in everything else that it should still taste delicious. Sorry to hear about your allergy... didn't know you could be allergic to garlic!
What city and restaurant did you go to for this dish? btw I love this recipe, I always use it!
YUM!
Thanks! :)
Awww man, you're making me hungry!!!
I like your food a lot ; but only 1 thing I don’t like fatty food like frying or mayonnaise and sugar ; if we can skip it out tel us please thank you
I always order 2x the cheese at dakgalbi restaurants in Korea. It's my favorite part!
You do? I actually don't like it with too much cheese because I think it kind of mutes the flavor.
Does Korean curry powder stain like turmeric???
It does because I believe there's turmeric in there. I usually try to be careful when handling it.
Chef Julie Yoon thanks! 😊
I am new in my journey at experimenting with cooking Korean food, and one aspect that truly makes me nervous is using "paste" and various kinds and how much is too much..... I plan on learning tho
Perilla leaves and sesame leaves are different.
Brocklie salad with onions
This is not the Dakalbi that they make in Chunchon, Korea. No cheese
Interesting. Do you like it that way? I was so attracted to the cheese part when I had it in Seoul.
Note to self: don't watch this when you're hungry and the nearest Korean market is 100 miles away!
Haha +Stynna so funny. There's always Amazon! ;)
Your recipe is nearly identical to Martina's of Simon & Martina which was posted months before yours. Coincidence ?
Conngeee is Martina the Korean? 🤔
Thank you.
Greetings from Germany.
