- In this video I try out (3) different RV soft starts I found off Amazon. I take the in-rush before and after to determine which one works the best and end up ordering a total of (4) for my roof top AC's.

I use the MicroAir on my home heat pumps as we have a backup generator. They use Bluetooth for monitoring. Nice feature.

I bought a $50 knockoff and installed it and it seems to be working. Im waiting on my inrush meter to cone in to get quantitative results on inrush amperage. Also going to try to run with my Westinghouse iGen2500 generator, which is the main goal.

I did. Been doing it for 6 years, kids getting older and not enough time. Will probably get back into it after they graduate.
Hey there, I got the ddorvu 6 months ago and have yet to install it. Did yours work for you? I’m seeing different results from different brands and am wondering if we sacrificed performance by saving money. So many times they’re same except in the name.

When you say “intercept” the black wire coming from the compressor…do you mean you cut it and connect the soft start black wire to the end connected to the compressor? Or cut it and splice it in with the complete wire?
Which soft start? I think each one was a little different configuration. I had to study what the soft start wanted and studied the wiring diagram. Then figured it out from there. I tried not to cut wires when possible. The hardest part was cutting a hole between the wiring box and the compressor compartment for the one soft start.

@@Hunleygarage I just stuck 600 watts of them on my camper. Work great, my only concern is the rubber roof membrane and elevated temperature. Have you had any issues?

I am trying to install two of these units though having problems with where to put the black wire, keep getting both Power and Start Lights continuously. Any ideas.
Ahh. I had to sit down and make a diagram for myself - I left it in my coach and have sold it. If I remember correctly, I believe it wires to the black after it comes into the unit and wires to the main board. So it intercepts the black as it comes off the main board. I did do 3 different soft starts, so could have that wrong.
Also have to remove the PCT and start capacitor. I left it in there but removed the wires to and from.
@@Hunleygarage I have removed the other start capacitor though do not know where the Black Wire from the Softstart attaches

Why isnt there any installation instructions????? One wire goes to herm here, another one goes to ptrc and third goes wherever????? I dont understand why people make videos where they have to do something ANYWAY. just take second and tell us as you do it. I absolutely HATE videos that dont walk us through installation that they are doing ANYWAY!!!
in all fairness this was not a how to wire up video. that does take time and editing to build out a nice clear wireup instruction video. also the wireup depends on the A/C you have. they do go to the same componets mostly, but wire color and location can vary so this video would be longer to watch, harder to produce, and only be super relavant for those with the same systems.
i got what i needed out of it which was the clarity in how much range there can be in the softstart devices. it never really crossed my mind that some could perform so differently as i figured they all worked within a similar range and it came down the build quality, warrenty, form factor. but a 5 amp spread was unexpected. I never tested the before and after on my install, i know it made a difference as it allows my 2k watt inverter to run our GE a/c without tripping it out..but does it perform as well as his is the question. also my wiring was alot different so this video would have been completely useless to me for the softstart i have on mine.
@bretmohler9719 I don't understand WHY it would be as a retired special forces soldier who has trained thousands. If im going to do something, I'm going to say I used a 10mm socket here or a wire here. To me, if I did something ANYWAY, if I don't want to edit, I could list stuff at the end on a whiteboard. Maybe it's the teacher type in me. Now, if I was NOT going to do it ANYWAY, then I wouldn't go out of my way to say it or show it.
@@Michaelthearcheangel well as a retired special forces soldier you are acting like a pretty entitled child about this. How about doing your own video on the install. There are other videos out there and this guy didn't claim this was an install video, just a comparison. The manufacturer provides the instructions and I found those to be adequate when I did the same thing the other month.
There are instructional videos, and informational videos. This is informational, moving on.
To be honest I spent days trying to figure it out for my units, trying to understand what did what, etc then how this was to wire up. Each is so different and really depends on how your unit is wired. I didn’t want to do a how to - because I don’t want any liability - there are just to many scenarios. I thought it best to do a comparison between brands because I couldn’t figure which one to get. Figure if someone is willing to go on their roof and install one of these, they can figure out how to wire it too, id just get a few and see which one did better.

You do know those ACs require the cover to be on to operate without overloading, right? Without the cover, there is little airflow over the condenser coil. I wonder how much life you removed from them running them for too long without the cover?
Also, unless you use the exact same AC for every unit, you're creating invalid results. They might be the same models, but they all surely have different startup profiles depending on how many hours they have on them.
Hyperbole humidity too - 95 degrees and 90% humidity is impossible. That would put the dew point at almost 92 degrees; almost 10 degrees higher than the highest dew point ever recorded in the US, and more than 20 degrees more than a typical summer day in the most humid parts of the country. Apparently you just like to hear yourself talk.
Thanks for your nice comment. I am EPA 608 certified so yes I do know - about 0.0 life removed for the 3 minutes they ran making sure the starter worked correctly. Even if I did run the unit without the cover I wonder how the fan motor life would be reduced or even the compressor motor? I was also testing startup amps from the compressor draw. Yes they will all vary but very little. Do you always leave flattering comments on videos? I loved yours.
I’m also have my certification 608 and 609. 😂 he’s just test starting the compressors. Why do you act like a know it all?

And on a side note, 95 degrees and 90% humidity is the normal for Houston summer days, anyone from Houston can attest to this.
