THANK YOU SO MUCH for reacting to my all-time favorite band!!
To answer a few of your questions (even though others will doubtless do the same):
    1) Yes, Dream Theater has a vocalist. It amazes me how often UA-cam reactors end up choosing this song as their first exposure to Dream Theater, and as a result miss out on their singer. Not a complaint...just something that seems to happen far more often than mere chance would allow for.
    2) While nearly every DT song features insanely talented progressive metal music, their song tend to fall into three categories. There are the impossibly progressive songs (like this one), the SLIGHTLY less insane ones that people find a bit more accessible ("Pull Mr Under," "Another Day," and the like), and the true epic masterpieces. This final category includes songs like "The Count of Tuscany," "Octavarium," and "A Change of Season." These songs often exceed 15 minutes in length, and must be experienced to be believed.
    3) No, they do not typically perform with an orchestra...this video was taken from a special performance that included one. However, their keyboardist often composes complex orchestral music and performs it onstage using a variety of cutting edge instruments and apps.
I will leave you with my favorite Dream Theater joke, which is partially inspired by the song you just reacted to:
Two people listening to a DT song, one for the first time. After he picks his jaw up off the floor, the first-timer asks, "What time signature is this song in?"
The other guy responds..."ALL OF THEM!!"
    God bless!!

I’m really glad that you keyed in on the phenomenally talented bass player, John Myung. He’s very much underrated and most people don’t even know who he is as he absolutely loathes publicity and any self aggrandizement, but he is easily one of the best bass players alive today and the glue that really holds this band together. He is so good, you often don’t even notice that he’s there, which sounds like an odd thing to say but is actually the goal of a lot of bassists. He’s there to add body and power to the over all sound, and the complexity of DT’s music is such that if he makes the slightest mistake it could throw the whole band out of sync and bring everything to a crashing halt, and he’s a flawless machine. Brilliant.

Dream Theater has a vocalist (James LaBrie) but this is an instrumental track from their 1999 concept album ("Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes from a memory") seen performed at Berklee School of Music w/ an orchestra for the occasion cos this was where the founders of Dream Theater met decades ago... John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass) met original drummer Mike Portnoy at Berklee and formed the band in 1985, which was originally called Majesty w/ Kevin Moore (keyboards)... Charlie Dominici (vocals) joined in 1988 and recorded their first album, but they had to change the name for legal reasons (The band still retained their 'M' logo)...Dream Theater was suggested by Mike Portnoy's father after a movie house in Cali. The band wanted to be a heavy metal version of a prog band - they were fans of those complex, epic songs by artists like Yes, Genesis, Frank Zappa, Rush, Deep Purple... and they loved metal bands like Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Metallica, Judas Priest, etc.
However, their 1989 debut album 'When dream & day unite' was not promoted and poorly produced... Dominici soon left the band.
In 1991, Dream Theater had written a second album without a singer... they finally found Canadian vocalist James LaBrie who joined and recorded their 1992 album 'Images and words' w/ better production on a new label... The edited single 'Pull me under' made it on MTV and radio as Dream Theater toured for the first time and the album sold gold in the US (half million copies)... Kevin Moore left the band after recording the album 'Awake' (1994).
Frustrated by the music business and response to their next album 'Falling into infinity' (1997), Mike Portnoy demanded that Dream Theater have creative independence on the 1999 album "Scenes from a memory" (based on the song 'Metropolis Pt.1' from the 'Images and words' album) and performed the entire 'Metropolis Pt.2' record on tour into 2000.
John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy had worked w/ Jordan Rudess (keyboards) and Tony Levin (bass) on an instrumental project Liquid Tension Experiment (which released 2 records... recently a 3rd album), and they enlisted Jordan Rudess to join Dream Theater on keyboards in 1999.
Dream Theater pushed both the heavy aspects of their music as well as the softer, atmospheric pieces... Their songs could be lengthy or short (depending on what the members came up w/ in the studio)... Going in 2009, drummer Mike Portnoy went through some changes... he decided to leave Dream Theater in 2010 (after 10 studio albums & 1 EP) to pursue other musical projects... Portnoy has since played w/ a number of bands, including - The Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, etc.
In 2011, Dream Theater announced the addition of Mike Mangini (drums) who had a long resume of playing in bands, and had taught in Berklee School of Music... the band released 'A dramatic turn of events' in 2011 and found themselves becoming even more popular. The concept album 'The Astonishing' (2016) was recorded w/ an orchestra arranged by composer David Campbell... They would perform both 'Images and words' and 'Scenes from a memory' on tour in recent years.
Their latest album is 'A view from the top of the world' (2021) and Dream Theater are still touring on it.

SO glad you have gotten to the entrance of the Dream Theater rabbit hole! They've been around since the very late 80s and have a huge catalogue. It's worth it to know a few things about this massively talented band. The band does have a plethora of instrumentally technical pieces and some of them are quite long. The bassist and guitarist are both alumni of the Berklee College Of Music. The drummer (the band's second) is a former professor at the same school, and the keyboardist is an alumni of the Julliard School of Music. There is also a vocalist but as you've seen here he does not appear. He is quite good as well though when he was younger he was able to hit notes on a level with Geoff Tate of Queensryche.
This particular performance was from their DVD "Breaking The Fourth Wall-Live From the Boston Opera House." Of note is that the orchestra (and conductor) is made up of students and alumni of the Berklee College of Music as is the accompanying choir (which you can see in this video though they do not have an accompanying role for this instrumental).
All that being said, I have been one of your viewers for awhile, and on another reaction you did I recommended that you check out DT's song "Illumination Theory" from this same DVD. In it you will see the vocalist, James Labrie perform some thought provoking lyrics, and the drummer, Mike Mangini (who is regarded as one of the world's best) knock out some more kickass drum licks. The orchestra and choir are also prominently featured in "Illumination Theory" and midway through the song perform one of the most beautiful pieces of orchestral music I have ever seen and heard. I do think you'll agree. A small warning, though...it is a long song but IMHO truly worth it!
Your reaction was enthusiastic and it was exhilarating to watch your surprise and intrigue at discovering Dream Theater.
Thank you for checking them out. You did wonderful! I think I can speak for all the commenters here in that we look forward to your journey down this newly discovered rabbit hole! :)
One last thing, there is another instrumental from this DVD entitled "Enigma Machine" where Mike knocks out a truly kickass drum solo midway through...
    Happy New Year Aileen!

You said it!! Finally someone states what I believe. That, "When it all comes together it's magic"
When your favorite musician dies, there's a sadness. Like the music has died too, and the... Magic is gone. Well, there were hits, and songs you loved, A LOT!... Had they not died can you say with 100% confidence that there would of been another hit or two or many more? Or maybe just one more song that would of been loved by a billion for decades? When a song is just right and it's coming together to that part everyone is waiting for and the goosebumps are tugging on your heartstrings... That's when the music becomes magic and resides in Heaven right now! The songs we haven't heard because of their passing is also there. We just have to die so we can hear them...

I was at that concert in Boston. They formed at Berklee college of music. When they came to Boston they invited the orchestra members from Berklee to play with them this time. No, they don't normally play with an Orchestra, but with Jordan Ruddess you don't need it. Having said that you'll notice it ended with three beats and no resolve. The resolve is the next song "One Last Time". This song is a part of a concept album that you would absolutely LOVE! ...and yes they have a vocalist. Many don't like him because years ago his vocal chords were damaged from food poisoning, but he's great nevertheless. I can't imagine living my life without having listened to them. Go listen to Metropolis Pt 2 Scenes From A Memory. This song is in there. The album will blow your mind if you dive in to the story.

I got to see Dream Theater front row center stage with a bunch of friends about 17, 18 years ago. I was really looking forward to it having been a fan since the early 90's. When the 3rd or 4th song started playing which I think was "Mirror" a crowd surfer was throw toward the stage; of course, I was facing the stage and all I remember is the instant pain of impact when the heal of his boot hit me on the crown of my head.
From what I was told, I blacked out immediately, and because it was as packed as it was, I was just being pushed and shoved, but still upright while unconscious until security pulled me over the railing. I came to as they were carrying me away. They sat me down at some small table at the side of the stage. I had no view of anything and I had the worst migraine you could imagine. They wanted to call an ambulance but I didn't have insurance and I declined it, but I missed the entire show. I was in so much pain, nauseous (concussed); I couldn't lift my head, I couldn't look at any lights, and my head was pounding!
I couldn't reach any of my friends, I couldn't drive; I had no where to go and no way to get home until the show was over.
Now, I suffer with severe back injuries, so my concert going days are sadly over, but if given the opportunity to see Dream Theater again, pain aside, I'd jump at the opportunity. I was there early, got front row, center stage, perfect position to see these amazing musicians (and singer) and I missed almost the entire show. At the time "Metropolis Part 1" was my favorite DT song, never got to enjoy it live. 😔

Glad that you appreciated such a complex song, many first reactors to DT are turned off by that, by the abruptly changing time signatures, etc. - I think it's a mistake to start a journey down the DT rabbit hole by this song.
DT has a singer, James LaBrie, but they're also very well known for their long instrumental sections even when there are lyrics - that's why the stories they weave with their songs often last +20 minutes. Another performance from this same concert should give you an idea of how great they are with the singer as well - it's called "Illumination Theory". I encourage you to continue your journey with this masterpiece, then follow it with The Count of Tuscany and, for a mindblowing banger, The Glass Prison. And that's just a drop in the bucket... with Metropolis Part II: Scenes From A Memory, DT created perhaps the best concept album ever, as good as (or even better than) Pink Floyd's The Wall or Operation Mindcrime by Queensryche.

    1) The Count of Tuscany shows off the melodic and epic genius of the band
    2) A Change of Seasons showcases the stories they are able to weave
    3) anything off the album Awake showcases James LaBrie (the vocalist) with some of his most impressive vocal runs
    4) Another band that I think you'd like would be Caligula's Horse. I recommend the track Graves, but other great ones could be Songs for No One, The Tempest, The Ascent, or Autumn.

You'll get,a ton of suggestions in the comments. Love Dream Theater. There's an old band called Manowar, they were the first metal band to use an orchestra live, a male choir as well. And their sing Eric Adams is one of the greatest. Enjoy your Dream Theater journey but don't sleep on Eric Adams. Cheers

If I absolutely HAD to pick a favorite band, it would probably be Dream Theater. Every one of them is an absolute master of their instrument.
The Count Of Tuscany is one of my favorite songs from them. That one or Glass Prison. They will both 1000% blow your mind.

Dream Theater... God I love them!!!!! And I hands down worship every band member for their absolute precision. Their rapid progression of varying time signatures with laser precision is just epic!!!! Like the perfect madness of a Swiss clock with ADHD. Especially the drum work... (Eargasm for a wanna be drummer like me) *Side note* if you like drummers checkout Neil Peart... the drummer from the band Rush. He was more of a Percussionist than a Drummer. So Good!!! But!!! Dream Theater... My best description of them is.... It's music for technical musicians. It's definitely not Top 40ish pop stuff. A Dream Theater mosh pit would probably look more like an advanced calculus class taking a mid-term exam. Lol It's as if Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein decided to start a band and then said let's invite a poet to join.... Almost like they both thought 'Hey... We can explain the universe but we need an artist's touch to deliver'... And I loves them for it. Oh geez.... I'm Rambling again. Anyways.... Glad you did the review. Keep rocking girl... Tata for now 💕

Woot!!! One of the best reactors and one of the best artists!!!
Was revisiting some Dream Theater just past couple days.. if you are able to, watch the full Live Scenes from New York show! First part is an entire concept album performed live, the rest is a marathon of other songs.. iirc drummer had to go on a drip after the show!
A left-field one is Wither. It's a simple song.. but so poignant.. kind of an insight/foreshadowing of the heart of DT Mike Portnoy (drummer) having to leave the band.
"The Best of Times" and "The Ministry of Lost Souls" will test your emotions too. Oh and the classic "A Change of Seasons"!
Another few things to not react to but simply add to your list of music history to-dos are "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage" and then watch "The Garden" live. And "We Are X", about X Japan (with Senpai in your name, you MUST check out Japan's greatest ever band!) And finally "BE Live with the Orchestra of Eternity" by Pain of Salvation.

    Thanks Aileen!
Rabbit hole, multidimensional portal, window into another universe... whatever you want to call it, Dream Theater is considered one of the Holy Trinity of Progressive Metal. QUEENSRYCHE and FATES WARNING the other two.
But you can put any of these musicians in the top 10 of their respective instrument.
Mike Myung on the bass has so quietly laid down some of the most technical and musical bass lines in the industry.
I say quietly because he is in a lineup of genuine masters...John Petrucci on lead guitar is so technically proficient that you can get overwhelmed trying to keep up you forget to appreciate the exquisite songwriting.
Jordan Rudess on keyboards is nothing short of a wizard. Every bit the master of the array of magical technology at his finger tips.
Mike Mangini on drums has done an equally masterful job of replacing the irreplaceable Mike Portnoy.
This track is from the band's concept album METROPOLIS PT 2: SCENES FROM A MEMORY and is part 1 of Scene 7.
One of the most difficult and technical pieces recorded with over 100 time signature changes and as you've now witnessed, truly an EPIC piece of musical art.
With a catalog spanning nearly 40 years there's plenty of material to dive into.
Since you started at Mount Everest, the trail tends to lead down, but the quality never suffers.
Could go back to the beginning...
Maybe pick up with their most 'popular' release, PULL ME UNDER.
Everyone has their favorites, and I'm no exception...
Mine is HOME. Coincidentally off the same album as DANCE OF ETERNITY, their concept masterpiece, METROPOLIS PT 2.
Look forward to watching you dive into this Dimensional Portal that is Dream Theater.

First time seeing your channel, and I must say, you know how to react to a video. Now Dream Theater happens to be my favorite band since 1995. And I find it hard to enjoy other artist. DT took me by surprise with there odd time signatures and excellent musicianship on All counts. I didn't know humans were capable of producing such sounds, and with such perfection. I've been waiting for you to react to another one, but you still haven't. Comments has left you a boatload to choose from. But I also have my favorite. This is with the Original Drummer Mike Portnoy who is also a co founder. Your gonna love this. Hi Aileen, again so much fun watching you react, I love to see you show your emotions in your face. I even "created" a nickname for you (don't hit me): I call you "the eyebrow", because it's moving the more you are moved. 😂
Other than that I can tell you I'm a Dream Theater fan since 1989, but it took me until 2000 to visit my first concert,
17 until now and the 18th in February. But I also have to say, it's not the same anymore, since Mike Portnoy left, so I
recommend Beyond this life of Live at Budokan.
The only "problem" at a Dream Theater concert is, that you don't have enough eyes, when the 4 guys are playing
great music at the same time 🤘
If you watch more of their videos, you surely will see Mr James Labrie, singer since 1992 😆
