Big influence is an understatement. Opeth's classics are foundational.
Opeth really is this clean live, no jumping around the stage, just calmly kicking you in the head with the music. They go from brutal to heartachingly beautiful, often within the same song.
Just for some context: Mikael (the lead singer) has a bit of a different sound live nowadays when he does the death growls (including this concert performance) compared to the sound he had on their album recordings. You really ought to check out some of the older studio material to hear his death growl in its prime. The thing is, the way he did that original growl wasn't sustainable over time, especially considering how much touring Opeth tends to do. So he swapped to this newer style which is obviously much better on his vocal cords and enables him to, like, keep singing into his older age. With all that said, their newer albums have left the death metal stuff almost totally behind and it's morphed into more of a smoother progressive rock sound devoid of most all screams. Mikael's voice is just wonderful and their newest material really shows that. Enjoy!!

As good as this live performance is, I still think the studio performances of these are just something else.
Another great band that heavily inspired Opeth is Porcupine Tree. Their live performance of Anesthetize is unreal. They have one of the greatest drummers ever and their vocal harmonies are insane even though it’s only 2 people.
Up up up you go! Not to mention Steven Wilson, the frontman of Porcupine Tree, has produced Opeth albums and even has a side project with Mikael called Storm Corrosion.
Steven Wilson and Mikael are both so talented. I was introduced to Steve in when I bought the Laminations DVD and watched the making of. That was such a good making of doco.
Gavin Harrison on drums for Porcupine Tree is truly a master. He has literally written the book (2, actually) on playing in different time signatures at the same time. 2 hands, 2 feet, 4 time signatures.
Porcupine Tree's drummer played on a project with Arjen Lucassen (composer of Ayreon and Star One) called Guilt Machine, album titled "On This Perfect Day". It's a fantastic prog rock/metal album everyone should hear.

I couldn't imagine you wouldn't enjoy this, but seeing you move around and your facial expressions throughout the song was so satisfying.
So, my recommendation for their first song was Harlequin Forest at the Royal Albert Hall. You will get a little glimpse of Mikael's humor and he starts the song with clean vocals, which might have made the growls more surprising. I still think that should be your next stop.
However, you have no idea how many great songs are waiting for you. Ask 10 Opeth fans their favorite song and you'll get 30 answers. You're also right about their musicianship - the live and studio performances sound very similar. However, there are songs that I definitely think your should hear the studio version of first. But we'll get to those. Harlequin Forest first.
Opeth is one of the best rabbit holes to discover.
God damn Opeth's basslines are good. I honestly never paid them any mind as they can be real far back in the mix at times but once I started learning them they drove me up a wall.
Martin Mendez is a phenomenal bass player. He has great feel and does tasteful runs that really compliment the songs.
@@reneniclasen353 Right?! My favorite bass parts are those that are complicated without making the whole song too busy, while also being distinct from the guitar. His are very much that.

OMG yes. Next up needs to be the song Blackwater Park! That whole album (also titled Blackwater Park) is, in my opinion, a perfect album. Front to back, flawless.
I highly recommend "Harlequin Forest" from their 2010 performance at the Royal Albert Hall. That is another amazing performance!

I've been listening to Hessian Peel for weeks now
I started with Ghost Reveries, picking up the CD in a shop on a whim. Subsequently bought Blackwater Park, then got Damnation, Deliverance, and Watershed. Damn, but they've got a discography to make other bands weep
I recommend 'Porcelain Heart' next... or 'The Grand Conjuration'... or 'Hex Omega'... or... well technically you can pick any song from their vast discography, they're just progressive icons with no bad stuff. The thing is they have so vast discography, 13 albums, and they are not afraid to incorporate different influences in their music. They even have album with no heavy riffs or extended fast tempos, 'Damnation', or 'Heritage' which is more progressive rock than progressive death metal... and last four albums Mikael, the singer, does not growl anymore. So they are constantly changing, evolving... I want to say that your journey experiencing Opeth will be a pleasant one, enjoy!
The Grand Conjuration is a really good idea
The breakdown in "The Grand Conjuration" gives me chills just thinking about it, but all those songs are great suggestions.
Mikael has also said that he is so still on stage because there is so much for him to think about, so he can't concentrate if he jumps around too much
Blackwater park is one of the greatest albums ever made and every track deserves your time..!!
That "chill" performance is total focus. It's like doing something you love and getting lost in it, no longer sensing time. Perfect presence. So practiced it looks easy. Of the Gods, truly. Thank you!
Well, I'd say its probably more that they have to concentrate what they are doing---being that they don't use clicks (one of the few modern acts that doesn't) they have to listen to what the other members are doing to not screw up the timing during heavy syncopation parts.
Opeth is mind blowing...people probably should have requested the studio versions for the first introduction, though. This is a decent quality live video, especially for open air, but without hearing the production and arrangements on the album, you aren't getting the full effect. Listen to the studio versions to really "get it".

Ghost reveries is a great place to start! Then I’d recommend Blackwater park if you want a more darker sound or still life for a little more old school version of their proggyness.
Or if you want less death metal vocals but like the prog, ICV album.

@@davidcurren2587 I personally would say try the Still Life and Blackwater Park albums, they are in the middle of their discography. The more you like the death metal sound the earlier you should go, the more progressive you like the newer stuff would be the way to start.

I did not read all 150+ comments, so someone may have mentioned… this is one of Tatiana’s and Eugene’s (from Jinjer) biggest influences. I know you enjoy Jinjer as well, so thought you’d like that fact.
Definitely Jinger, I know that they were at home in Ukraine when the War started, don't know what or where they are now, hopefully safe.
I think Pisces sounds a lot like Opeth, but it's an exception in their discography
Opeth is probably the best band I’ve seen live at matching their studio sound. Plenty of other bands get very close or maybe change some things to add energy or whatever which I love as well, but for as close to a studio sound as you can get Opeth is the one.
Opeth has a massive library of phenomenal music. Mikael is a beast of a singer, writer, and conductor of music and story telling. You should definitely check out their albums.
Opeth has remained one of my top bands together with Tool for probably 20 years. Every time you hear a song again with those two bands you discover new sounds, meanings or feelings. I would recommend to hear their opus maxima "Blackwater Park" next. You'll like it, then we can pass on to their jazzy/soul ballads from the Damnation album.
First Tool, now Opeth? Damn I'm glad I found this channel.
Let's also keep in mind this is done at SIX THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED feet above sea level. I could barely breathe properly when I went up there for a show years ago, and Mikael's doing this. It's actually unreal.
One of the greatest bands in the history of music, no matter the genre. Recommendations:
*Deliverance* (studio or live from the Lamentations DVD) - The outro section of that song is truly something else, especially if you enjoy rhythm.
Apart from that, I will skip the usual suspects, because other people will recommend them en masse. Instead I'll recommend a few songs most reactors never get to.
*Advent* (probably studio; don't know if there are any decent live recordings of this) - from their second and, in my opinion, still strongest album Morningrise
*To Bid you Farewell* (same deal; probably studio) - Also Morningrise, and one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded
*By the Pain I See in Others* (I think there is a decent live version of it on youtube, though they rarely play it during shows) - off the Deliverance album
*When* (studio version recommended; they played it live, but I think they shortened it) - also an older song off the My Arms Your Hearse album. The final section of this song left me absolutely speechless, when I first discovered them at the tender age of 15.
First time I heard Opeth... I just knew they would become my favorite band. Love at first listen. ♥️

Found you because you started listening to TOOL, just left your Judith reaction from A Perfect Circle, and now, I see you listened to Opeth, one of my other all time favorite bands!
Oh man I'm so happy you discovered Opeth. Do yourself a favor and go watch this same song played on The Roundhouse Tapes because Mikael was even more aggressive with his range because he focused a lot more on screaming back then. He's mellowed out his screaming because the band has transitioned into a pure prog non screaming sound. This song is the very first song on what I believe to be their absolute best album, Ghost Reveries, one of like 5 albums I've given a perfect 10/10. The song sounds like it could be an entire album on its own because it captivates you from beginning to end. Absolutely love it!
They're on tour right now in North America, I saw them at their first stop in Laval (city next to Montréal). Touring with Khemmis & Mastodon. Was an amazing show, definitely recommend it if they come near you!

I've been a fan of Opeth since My Arms, Your Hearse came out in 1998 and a friend recommended it to me. I hated the harsh vocals at first, but grew to love them. Saw them live in 2004, absolutely amazing. Opeth and Testament are like the two bands that got me into harsh vocals right at the turn of the century. Now it's in about 75% of what I lsiten to haha
Opeth has really always had such impressive orchestration and song writing. So many great tracks. Every album is unique, and honestly, they’re all great in their own way.
I wish I could go back to 2005 when I was 16 and relive the magic of hearing this for the first time again, this was my first Opeth song aswell and it was just magical
I was at this concert in May, 2017. I remember it was cold because Opeth headlined (after Devin Townsend and Gojira) and we didn’t dress warm enough. Other people we were with left, but I refused to leave until Opeth played my favorite song of theirs, Deliverance. My wife was a trooper and agreed to stay as long as I wanted. Of course, Opeth’s last song was Deliverance, but I’m thankful we stayed for the entire show because that 2017 Red Rocks show is one of the most legendary and referenced concerts on UA-cam. The idea my wife and I were there when it was happening is surreal. Thank God we stayed! With that being said, check out Deliverance from the Lamentations performance with Martin Lopez on drums (Martin Axenrot was the drummer in this video).

I was going to recommend this very song today. What are the odds :) Opeth (pressure is on the "O", not the "Pe" ;)) are truly legends despite having gone through a few member changes. Nobody sounds like they do. The list of incredible Opeth songs you could dive into next is long, but I highly recommend "Harlequin Forest". It's from the same album as "Ghost of Perdition".

You could listen to a lot of their songs: they know how to be calm and melodic like in "Harvest" or "Windowpane", or similar to this in songs like "Deliverance" and "Harlequin forest"

I love the whole album this song is from "Ghost Reveries". I'd say that this is my second favorite form this album. My favorite is "The Grand Conjuration". Even if you don't react to it, which I hope you will, you got to check it out.

Opeth is God Tier when it comes to musicianship. One of my favourite bands from the very first time I listened to them 10 years ago, up to today, even after I have heard tons of new good music.
Opeth couldn't come more highly recommended. Class act and in a league of their own. You'll probably enjoy some Ne Obliviscaris too, try "And Plauge Flowers the Kaleidoscope..." live from their show in Colorado.

14:05 funny you should mention that. Opeth - Garden of the Titans is this exact concert, recorded live at Red Rocks Amphitheater. And, yes, the whole concert sounds amazing for such a challenging venue

This song was probably in my top 5 most played in high school. My band nerd friends and I werd obsessed with this album.
Try Ne Obliviscaris for another phenomenal progressive death metal group. You'll be blown away. Dealers choice. Doesn't matter what you pick its great just like Opeths library are all fantastic.

Opeth live performances sound better than the original recordings (imo), this band is just so talented and all the staff working with them equally so. Also, the lighting director that works for opeth synced the lights with the performance, and very accurately at that. Just major talent all around with these guys, it's my dream to see them live.
Leper Affinity is a nice song from them, Harlequin Forest as well... To be honest, all of their stuff is great and I've been listening to them for nearly 20 years. Seen em live a few times as well, they always deliver.

Gotta check out Harlequin Forest from the same show. And then do yourself a massive favor and go listen to their landmark 2001 record Blackwater Park on your own from start to finish. It quite literally changed the course of metal music.
The comparison to “Down with the Sickness” hurt. Great Reaction though. I ,as I assume everyone, like to live vicariously through the lucky people who get to hear Opeth and other bands for the first time.
This is my favourite Opeth song. I love the melodic interludes in contrast to the heavy. Regarding the recording, all such shows are recorded one a line level and mixed for a release like this. Normally one records a stereo track of the room to give the ambience of the kive show.

I am always curious to see if people think the same as I do about songs and bands. I remember buying this album when it came out and playing it nonstop for months. Friends would catch it in certain parts and say oh this is so nice, and then hear the growl. Each song is like 4 songs in 1.
