It Took Me Years to Learn This But When I Did - WOW! - My Ball Striking Got So Good!

  • I used to struggle with inconsistent golf ball striking because I never truly understood what created consistent contact. I would hit a lot of fat and thin shots, but rarely took a divot after the ball. Then I discovered this amazing golf swing concept and my ball striking changed forever. I never imagined it could be this simple either. Looking at my old golf swing, there was a lot of variables and moving pieces that made it inefficient. To make consistent contact with the ball, I had to make my swing efficient and eliminate variables. This came down to mastering my shoulders in the golf swing. I found that if my shoulders moved, my contact point with the ball would move. Once I understood this, great ball striking became a normal thing. This is one of the most valuable concepts for any golfer to learn - how to control your contact point. Once you learn this you can easily add power and accuracy into your swing. Do this golf tip and watch your ball striking transform into something awesome.

    Back when I used to read golf magazines and tried to incorporate different tips for a good swing. My scores never got better. Then I started watching Tom and my scores started going down and I started really enjoying the game. I have never seen better lessons on youtube than Tom's.

    Another marvelous video by Tom Saguto. The info shared here is deep and solid. To see a pro who had this lesson grooved to perfection see “The King” Arnold Palmer. I’m pretty sure Tom has a few videos on the King and they are all excellent !
    *Stack weight slightly forward at setup (& leave it there during the backswing)…
    *Left arm straight at set up (& keep it straight during the swing),
    *tilt lead shoulder to the ball on the back swing
    *and then use the left shoulder and straight left arm to Trace this same path back to & through the ball.
    A PGA pro just gave you turkeys the keys to a world class golf swing in under 6 minutes. That’s pretty classy.

    Tom, day in and day out, you are my (and my wife) ‘go to’ golf guy here. I have used and tried many of your tips over the years. Your one ‘golden’ tip I use every golf day is the 60% weight on my left leg at address / impact. This helps me with solid contact at impact.
    On another subject …… imagine my surprise recently when I found you online playing a Gibson Firebird playing Allen Collins licks! Wow! Allen Collins was my cousin - small world!
    Keep putting out those ‘golden’ golf tips and also continue stroking that Firebird!! JM

    Started getting cocky and things fell apart as quickly as they had come together. Then I saw a second "squeeze the arms together" video that mentioned pointing the elbows into the torso. BOOM! Suddenly the backswing came so easily and it all fell back into place. It's nice watching the ball fly straight and far.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  11 днів тому

      Nice job self-diagnosing and making the appropriate fix, Rick!!
      Yes - one problem that can occur during or after a good round or practice session is when we say to ourselves, "Now I've got this." That's an open invitation to our old swing demons, and they never miss an opportunity to haunt. We get a little too relaxed, a little too loose. We let our guard down. One swing element starts to break down, and then the chain reaction begins.
      Thanks so much for sharing your corrective action to regain the structure in your swing, and keep up the great work!!💪💪

    I’ve been playing golf for a long time. After watching this video yesterday I tried it for just a few minutes with my 6 Hybrid. I thought I was hitting my 6H very well before the video. Just the first few swings with my 6H were immediately 30-40 yards longer than my previous averages. Amazing.
    So today we played our usual weekly round and I concentrated on the shoulder rotation and straight left arm. Everything went longer, a lot longer, and straighter.
    Mind blown. It’s so easy to get complacent. I won’t anymore. Thanks so much.
    I’m almost 74 years old. Hitting my 3 wood 190 yards today and dead straight. I’m so excited and amazed. And I’ve had many lessons over the years from professionals and none of them ever brought this out like you did so simply. Thank you so very much.

    Excellent explanation Tom on the importance of the shoulders in the golf swing! I have always placed a heavy emphasis on the use of the shoulders in the golf swing! I feel that with the proper tilt of the shoulders, turning, and then rotating through with the rest of the body, a great golf shot is inevitable. Well Done Tom! Always look forward to your input!

    Hi Tom - thanks again for all the great content!! The transition to Stack and Tilt has been slow and steady and I am about 92% there. Hitting the ball SO much better and more consistently. I did have a 'holy s***!!' moment a couple of days ago.
    I have struggled with the transition from the top of the swing to the downswing and with lagging the club. The moment was me feeling that, from the top of my swing, I was turning my sternum first with arms lagging behind and NOT my shoulders. (I had been swinging my arms along with my shoulders... because they are connected! Casting, I guess. And it was zapping power). This TINY change has created better lag and a more in-to-out path to the ball in the downswing. I've picked up a full club in distance and am hitting the nice push draw down the middle. 45 years of golf and it is FINALLY coming together. Thanks!

    I'm gonna say from experience trying this a few weeks back, it is the ONE tip that works. The overt focus on pointing the lead shoulder at the ball has made all the difference in my ball striking. I also find it very interesting that none of the other tips seem to really work for me. All from THIS channel ( I unsubscribed from all other teachers, lol ). Yesterday I was out playing and I was trying to add to the shoulder point other tips that you have given. The result was slice after slice after hook after mishit after disaster. It was terrible. Then, for the last 4 holes of the round, I went back to this one tip, and all was well again. I even nuked a 5-iron further than I ever have on a par 5 18th to get on in 2. THIS is the only drill I'll use, but I'm happy to watch all of your vids!

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому +1

      Well, first of all that's rather awesome getting home in two on the par 5 closing hole with a 5 iron. Well done!! 💪💪
      Now, I must thank you for validating this point that I routinely share..... It is very important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing, as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my UA-cam content. I am not even sure what to say. Tom, you have helped my game more than I can quantify but I will try. Your explanations not only make sense but they are verifiable through practice, trial and error. You led me out of a quagmire of instruction and made it clear and easy. This video is excellent. I went out this afternoon and hit several shots with my PW and 8 Iron, trying to replicate the shots you were hitting in the video. Just butter and consistency (and consistency is my main objective these days). This and your video about the left arm staying straight seems to be all I need right now. However, when I work on the shoulders, the hips and arms naturally, without thought, do the right thing. Please keep it up. I would love to do a lesson or class with you one day. Thank you.

      @@SagutoGolf thanks for that tom. i have just been working on the power crunch and when i look you have just made a video on it. has to be the future with modern day equipment. when the upper left presses down, in the backswing, it extends the muscles in the left arm. and, when the upper left stays pressed down in the downswing it keeps the muscles in the arm extended. and, this really does create serious power. i can't crunch the ball with the back of my left hand like you can, i have to press my left hand against the left side of the shaft; but, it is all good.

    @saguto this weekend I input your tip about having a full swing and throwing my hands out through the ball whilst keeping me left arms straight all the way through finish and I scored an 77. I have previously broken 80 a handful of times but if I keep putting in the work then I believe I will be in the 4-8 range of handicap. Your tips are generally helping me. Also seems like a wide backswing/ tilting shoulders right and full swing through the contact point has led me to hit almost every fairway with my driver that day that I played. Thank you Tom, your tips are genuinely helping me get better and get that much closer to scratch level

    Great tips!! Whenever my mechanics slip during a round causing topping and/or pulling the ball it's due to my shoulders leaning back. Left arm straight for RH golfers is key. Also, notice that your feet are pointed out slightly that probably helps keeping your balance in the proper position. Working on this constantly will result in much improved ball striking 😉

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому

      Thanks - I'm glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you!!
      The outward flaring of both feet 10-20 degrees in our setup facilitates the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through. This is a major power move that also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If you were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then your hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Restricting this action can cause a variety of path issues and/or also place strain on the lead knee and the hip joints as the hips will "want" to move laterally and turn through into the finish but will be fighting the body in the process.
      Keep up the great work!

    Thanks Tom, excellent video and what impress me the most is the effortless "flow" of your swing. One question; like many other golfers I have read a lot of golf magazine articles over the years and one "truth" out there is that the downswing starts from the feet up but if I try to force my hips to rotate before the arms and shoulders, inevitably the club will come over the top resulting in a huge slice. In contrast to this it seems that if I keep my hip "silent" and just let it rotate " by itself", as a natural response to the movement of the arms and shoulders, then it works much better. Would really like to hear/ see your comments on this subject. Many thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

      Thanks Allan - I sincerely appreciate your kind words regarding my instruction and my swing!
      With regard to your stated issue, the lateral targetward action of the hips in the downswing acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. Here are a couple of lesson videos specific to this topic:

      My own personal "feels" are not relevant to you because they are unique to me. 😎 Beyond that, they do change quite regularly as I'm always thinking about new possibilities for my lesson content. So, sometimes it's the lead arm, sometimes it's the trail arm, other times it's both arms, and even others it's no arms and just shoulders or chest or hips... This is why I do my best to convey multiple feels or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why thousands of folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result (and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews). Instead of “letting the hands fall” to start the downswing, get to the top, start your shoulder circle (maintaining your arm structure), which lowers your hands. Thoughts? Thanks for all the entertaining instruction😂

      This should certainly help in your efforts to eliminate that early extension, Greg.
      As for how to initiate the downswing, that is a loaded question because it is so dependent on individual tendencies that I cannot give a generalized answer. This is why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. At the range today I filmed myself and noticed that I tend to stretch out my right leg too much and looks like I end up with 100% weight on the left foot making it impossible to turn my hips in time - causing my swing to scoop and come over the top. I'm 6"4' and I feel like I have too much bend in my knees when starting the swing...

      The lead knee flexes as the trail knee straightens during the backswing, both in their outwardly flared orientation that we preset at address. The flexing/straightening occurs gradually and in response to the increasing forward weight load and the centered tilting, turning, and extending components of the motion. *_They are not contrived actions unto themselves._* We're simply allowing them to be reactive, thereby freeing up the hips and shoulders to execute an unrestricted turn. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing.

      Hi Darryl,
      I'm very glad to know that my instruction is helping you!
      I have done several videos on what I refer to as "Hogan's Magic Elbow", and based on unsolicited feedback that lesson series has helped countless golfers across the globe to overcome a myriad of issues and experience great ball striking. Here is the original episode: ua-cam.com/video/iL9WmQ7KsmE/v-deo.html And here is a more recent version: ua-cam.com/video/GQI6SoL1AUg/v-deo.html
      As for the stance, I believe you are referring to the diagram in the Five Lessons book where Mr. Hogan shows the gradual migration of his trail foot position for the various clubs from a narrow and somewhat "open" stance for the short irons to a wider "closed" stance for the driver? If so, then what we prescribe is consistent with the progressive widening as you move from short to long, but unless we're trying to hit some type of specialty shot we prefer - but do not mandate to take account for individual idiosyncrasies - that the foot line remains parallel to the target line throughout the bag.
      By the way, would you like to learn some key aspects of the swing I teach in a more structured manner? If so, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому +1

      A little bit of bend is okay. More than that can lead to consistency issues and power leaks. The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur:
      1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift
      2) the wrists will break down
      3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side
      4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball
      5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight.
      6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact
      7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury
      We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you execute the swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".

    In the last year I went from playing in the mid 80s to losing all senses and struggling to break 100...then being rescued by a clip a friend sent me-an instructional piece by a teenage girl. Her key advice was hanging on to the hinge/L as long as possible, staying balanced and centered, keeping the back elbow tight to the body and rotating around your spine. Today it's a mediocre day of play if I score over 80.

    Hey Tom, I have adopted this same shoulder move this season with very good results. Still battling too quick of a start from the top which flattens my shoulder turn through the ball. I always check my clubface after a poor shot to look for a clue as to why. Last time out the course was a little damp, I pushed a shot right and looked at the clubface. It was very obvious that the club was toe down at impact by the "splash" dirt line on the iron. Not sure if my grip was a little lazy or it was something else. Any thoughts?

      There's a high likelihood that you have some early extension and/or your downswing path is a bit steep. That being the case, I suggest giving some serious consideration to the LagShot clubs that I speak about and demonstrate in these videos:
      - ua-cam.com/video/oxW_7HjzacY/v-deo.html
      - ua-cam.com/video/bLWekbGl7C8/v-deo.html

      I think the Lag Shot clubs are awesome training aids for resolving a host of downswing sins, particularly because you can hit balls with them and receive instant feedback. Simply incorporate the LagShot into your practice routine and it will greatly assist you in grooving the proper motions and downswing path. You can get 15% off Lag Shot using this link: www.lagshotgolf.com/sagutogolf

      @dartmonkeop3235 - I'm very glad to know that my instruction content for this fantastic S&T swing system and my teaching style are resonating with you!!
      The short answer with regard to uphill and downhill lies is to 1) Match your shoulders to the angle of the slope, 2) Widen your stance a bit for stability, 3) Understand that an uphill slope is going to add loft whereas a downhill slope will reduce loft and produce more runout, so adjust your club selection accordingly, 4) Make a practice swing next to the ball to determine your swing's low point on that particular slope, and then address the ball so that the low point is just ahead of it, and 5) Do your best to keep your center intact as you swing since any swaying will shift your low point and cause inconsistent results.
      In other words, @manbearpig7359 is not far off with his advice..... 😎

      Hi Ezio,
      If we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Here are a few lessons on this topic:
      - ua-cam.com/video/1FLm67Fn81M/v-deo.html
      - ua-cam.com/video/RfH96tUn6ls/v-deo.html
      - ua-cam.com/video/Gm_RtSHbH8c/v-deo.html
      I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness.

That's why it works so well! 😎Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top.

      The need for a *_weight shift_* in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some *_transfer of pressure_* into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. In the swing I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs), gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful motion.
      This swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top.
      Anyway, whatever works for you is fine by me, as long as it doesn't cause any pain - physically or mentally.... 😎
      Happy New Year!

      I appreciate your interest, Gregory! I had phased out private lessons (both in-person and virtual) awhile back so I could dedicate more time to my online school. I've not yet set a date for when I will resume them and to what extent, but please feel free to check back periodically.
      As for the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of the online school, that is where you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish. Additionally, you'll have access to all my short game content (putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play), advanced level material, diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe spanning all age ranges and talent levels are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews
      And for a really good starting point to get you on the proper path towards consistently crispy ball striking bliss, here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/

      Yes - Yes - this swing key also applies to the hybrids and woods (including the driver). In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому

      If you are just transitioning to this swing system, then I wouldn't be so concerned about distance at this juncture. Typically, once this swing is running properly on autopilot golfers experience significant increases in length. You are relatively early in the process and likely still ingraining your "feels" and thinking mechanical thoughts. When you develop sufficient confidence in the motion that you are comfortable "giving up control", you'll be able to just trust it and let it fly. At that point you'll have made that giant leap from playing "golf swing" to playing target-focused golf, and by then you should be seeing your yardages increase through the bag.
      Beyond that, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. What the shoulders do is very much determined by how the spine turns. I feel I need to rotate my core, stomach out away from target to get to such a tilted spine position.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  24 дні тому

      The dynamic tilting, turning, and extending actions of the spine support the proper shoulder action without any need for shifting away from the target. To get a feel for the coordinating of these elements we can reverse engineer it as follows: Without a club in your hands rest the top of your forehead against a wall to keep it in place and assume your setup posture. Without allowing your head to move execute the targetward side tilting motion and watch what happens. Magically your lead shoulder has turned downward, and your spine has extended!!

    How do you transition weight without moving your body or “circle”?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому +1

      The need for a weight shift in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому +1

      Well, golf is played on grass, so better that as opposed to the opposite... 😎
      Your shanks can be the result of a variety of actions: 1) You may be too steep on the downswing and thereby exposing the hosel to the ball; 2) Conversely, your downswing path may be too in to out; 3) You may be rolling the face open during the backswing; 4) Your wrists may not be hinging properly; 5) You are setting up with the ball positioned at the heel of the club; 6) More...
      What I'm getting at is that there are a number of potential causes, and without actually seeing your swing it's impossible for me to identify the culprit behind those hosel rockets. There are entire sections of my online school dedicated to resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? If you run a line along your shoulder line at the top of the swing you will see that it points beyond the ball by at least 2-3 feet. You do not want to point your shoulder at the ball at the top of your back swing.

      It's a "feel" that goes a long way towards helping us maintain our relationship with the ball - which is absolutely critical for consistently crispy ball striking. Even Arnold Palmer - who said this was his favorite tip - had his shoulder line pointing beyond the ball while "feeling" that his left shoulder was at the ball.

    Keeping that lead arm straight is the hardest thing for me

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому

If you execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum".

      It's a "feel", Neil. And we need that feel to retain our relationship with the ball and the ground. Consider that Arnold Palmer's favorite tip was to point his left (lead) shoulder at the ball, but even The King's shoulder plane pointed outside the ball. Our human physiology is such that to actually execute that verbatim would likely have us too steep.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому +1

      Hi Ken,
      A slight amount of bend is acceptable, but more than that can cause consistency issues and power leaks. The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). 7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury
      We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". It all begins with a proper setup. For example, weight forward 55/45 (up to 60/40 with the longer clubs), both feet flared out approximately 20 degrees with the knees similarly angled outward, arms hanging naturally from the shoulders (except for the driver, for which we push them out an inch or so to encourage more of the around-the-body motion needed for that lengthy shaft), and hands even with the inside of the lead thigh are prescribed setup features of the swing system I teach. This orientation provides for an unrestricted 45 degrees of tilted hip turn, at which point we only need to add another 45 degrees of shoulder turn for a full 90 degrees. The result is a centered, stress-free, flowing motion back and through, and a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing.
