- DISCLAIMER. Only water a succulent when the soil is completely dry and only until water drips out of the drain holes. In this video I give one of my Jade plants a lot of water. I only did this because the plant had not been watered in a long time and was severely under watered (dehydrated) DO NOT WATER LIKE THIS FOR EVERY WATERING. Succulents need a lot of water in the hot summer growing season. Give it lots of water, but make sure it dries out completely before watering again. Thanks for watching!
Me and my boyfriend acquired our first Jade Plant together. He actually picked it out without a clue about plants, but something attracted him to it. For me it felt like the plant chose us. My mum had a Jade when I was growing up so I had to take it home. I remember her’s being very bright green. I got mine on a discount and was very concerned that our Jade Plant was yellowing on the tips. I first noticed it had red on the very edge of it’s leaves too, but when I saw the yellow I thought it was a sign of overwatering! So I stopped watering, bought new soil mix, fertiliser, and a bigger pot because I wasn’t sure what was wrong. In many UA-cam videos I’ve seen they never mentioned the different types of Jade and variations of colours. I now know I have a SUNSET JADE! So glad I came across this video. The comment section is also extremely helpful. I will follow your tips and enjoy my sunset jade 🌞🌱

Good luck! Everyone kills a few succulents before they get the hang of how to water them lol. Make sure its gets plenty of sunlight as well. Also....I would only recommend terracotta pots as the are good at absorbing soil moisture lower in the pot.

Thank you for this video. I recently moved into my own place and thought I would buy some succulents because I thought they were easy to take care of. They probably are, but turns out I did everything wrong, LMAO. I got a garden when I probably should have gotten a few separate ones and a few plants in there were already overwatered, so I tried to let those "dry out" and, in turn, the other plants dried out and died. But, I learned quite a bit in the process, and this was probably the best video I've seen so far. It was very to the point for people who leave too much room for interpretation, like me. 👍

I’ve got to change my soil ASAP. All of my succulents are currently doing ok, but whenever they do die it’s from stagnant water because I never have the right soil. One of my succulents is a trooper. I’ve had it for years, I am convinced it’s unkillable, like a super succulent. I’ve had to move across the country multiple times the past years and so many of my plants die in the process. The ones that made it...I’m going to get them the proper soil tomorrow, the little guys deserve it.

I keep killing plants, so I bought a plastic succulent. Can’t kill that one.
Don't give up. Buy a cheap plant...put it in terracotta and give it a bright location.
Try a snake plant. You can't kill them.

Ha ! Me too, until I read(years ago, before my PC) and now watdhing videos on what they need or don't. Don't feel alone, as I've killed a few in my day as well. I have a medium size jade plant(about 8-10" tall) and the other day after watering I had a couple of leaves turn black/brown and fall off. Immediately I knew it was something to do with watering, probably too much. I'll know next time to go easy on the watering. Remember, with jades or any succulent, too little water is way better than not enough. If they need water, they'll tell you by the leaves puckering up and getting wrinkly. Then, they're ready for a drink. Then, easy does it.Jades are tricky to keep healthy and lots of time it just a guessing game, it seems.
get a jade plant. It was my first houseplant, got it 12 years ago before youtube plant care guides and I didn't have a nice sun room then and it survived.

Nice video, thanks for the info. I would change the soil from miracle grow to pro mix succulent and 🌵 mix..Miracle grow is full of little flies. Is better to mix your own: 3 parts Pro mix, 1part perlite, 2 parts coarse sand or crush granite and some small pebbles at the bottom for good drainage. I even add some bark for African violets. The potting mixes have too much peat moss which is not good for succulents and tropical plants, unless is a plant that loves to be in a soaked soil. Commercial mixes don't have very good drainage because most of them have peat moss which is why is better to make your own mix.
I have switched to promix soil and I now mix in some orchid bark, perlite and charcoal. Thanks plant friend!

I tried several times with jade , and they die on me ...I know now it’s my watering . Maybe I try again with smaller plant and see if it lives . I have just started other succulents in June and so far so good , I bought cacti soil and I use clay pots . Thanks for video! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

I started using, Ice Cubes to water my jades. As you say once its dry put 2-3 cubes around the stock and let them melt in. This prevents it just running through and is a way of "metering" how much I water it.
Very interesting. I know some people water their orchids this way as well. Keep me posted with how this method works for you. Just make sure it is getting enough cubes lol 🧊

Just watching through a few videos like this to see if there's anything I missed in caring for this particular houseplant. I haven't watered them this aggressively, but they still seem to be doing ok. They also seem to do well in less porous pots (like plastic ones) provided there's adequate drainage on the bottom. And there's another trick to help drainage with a coffee filter about an inch (2.5cm) of pea gravel and then another coffee filter in the very bottom of the pot before putting in the potting soil, as that lets water out and some air in without having the soil leak out. Might give some more options in planting, as the layer of gravel lets the soil "breathe" rather than the material of the pot.
This is an aggressive watering when it is extremely dry. Thanks for the other tips as well.
Thank you for a great video about succulents! I have a big jade that was originally outside. I've had in 2 locations inside and it kept dropping leaves. So I moved it back outside. The best available place outside for it was on a partially south facing but entirely west facing patio. It looks to me like the leaves have gotten sunburn because there is red color now on the top of the leaves, not on the edge. Will it be OK? The reason I kept moving it was it was dropping a lot of its leaves and even small branches of leaves. I had read not to water them at all during the Winter because it was a desert plant from South Africa, however after listening to your video I think that was a mistake perhaps that contributed to its dropping of leaves and small branches.
Finally, when it drops small branches can those be easily rooted? And do you root them right in soil or do you put them in water like you might with a pothos?

Yes, it will be okay. You can just remove the bad sunburned leaves and let it recover. When going to more light you must slowly move it to brighter light over a couple weeks so they plant can adjust. Most of mine get direct sun indoors with no burn. Good luck.

Great analysis of the leaves, plump vs. dry and wrinkly. Where did you get the water meter? Sounds like a good idea. Like the idea of the porcelain pots drying the bottom half of the pot.

is it ok to water succulents and water touching the leaves? i dont know why but i felt like if water, for example, touches my moonstone leaves it will make them rot away

Water on succulent leaves can lead to fungal issues, so it is always advised to not have water on the leaves. Now in their natural habitat, of course they are going to get water on the leaves because of the rain. I have never had an issue, but if it is frequent then I'm sure you may run into the risk of rotting leaves. Alittle bit of water I wouldn't worry about.

I just got a small succulent and I keep hearing that they need a lot of sunlight. however, I have a north facing window and I I’m nervous about keeping my plants, specifically the succulent alive and thriving. do you think it can be done or do you have any tips for growth?
If thats the only window you have then just keep an eye on watering. The less sun a plant has the less it needs and requires water.

Hi. Very informative! I had a ten year old jade that was about three foot tall. I over watered it and one morning it looked like it melted! I tried to save it by breaking the pot and letting it dry out. No luck. Broke my heart! I have about six cuttings from that plant that are beautiful! I need to put them in separate pots but have been afraid! Your video helps! Thank you! Do you have any videos on spring or Christmas cactus? I have one that looks kind of sad. I did re pot it in cactus soil and a clay pot. Any other suggestions? Thank you!
Have you replanted those Jade cuttings? Don't be afraid...just put them in soil made for succulents and pot away! I always use terracotta pots as well. It helps control moisture throughout the pot.
Unfortunately, I do not have a Christmas cactus or any experience with them. Always research the light requirements and watering for any plant. A quick search says to keep them in moderate light like an east facing window. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help with this plant.

I just got my jade plant. Its a baby. How do I make it look more like a tree and less like a bush?
Is it multiple stems or just one? To get them like a tree takes time (a couple years to mature), lots of sun and occasional pruning to shape the tree.
@@EverythingPlants It has 3 stems coming from a single plant. Ive read that you can zip tie the base until it grows into each other, or you can just snip the other trunks off while its still green and it'll confine to grow? Thanks!

Wrinkly plants can be a sign of both over and under watering. The easiest answer is if yours is in bright light and haven't watered in a long time then it probably needs water. If you recently watered it and still looks wrinkly after a few days then perhaps it is over watered or the soil isn't drying out.

Hey dude! I have killed a few in the beginning as well. The main things are having a quick draining soil (cactus/succulent mix), I recommend terracotta pots for succulents, place in a bright and sunny area and make sure you water at the right times....see, it's easy.
I used to kill them. I find that the light is the most important. Water well when totally dry, but If they aren’t getting enough light they won’t survive.

Any type of water is fine except water that is softened with salt.
I have had no problem watering the top of soil. Maybe a preference thing for others.
All plants love rain water. Can water from the top but Its best to water the soil and not the plant because the leaves get white spots from the treated City water.
Ur echeveria purposorum looks so nice mine just died with no cause and it just wrinkle and die even tho I water once a week 😭
Watering once a week is probably too much. That small one I will water maybe once every 2-3 weeks.
My plants are not separated by the ones that are and aren't succulents so it would b hard 2 get u pics of just succulents. I luv my plants !!

Jades are very common indoor plants here in Canada. They remain indoors (you can take them out in the summer) because of our harsh winter temps. It serves no purpose other then I enjoy it. Thanks for watching!!!!
Three weeks ago, I planted some Jade cuttings in soil for cacti/succulents. I think they’ve begun to send out roots - there’s no give when I gently tug them upwards - however the leaves have become very puckered. How do I know whether this is from underwatering or overwatering? Thanks so much for the help.
You may lose some leaves as this is most likely where the plant is drawning the nutrients it needs to root itself. Don't worry about it and water as if it were a normal root jade plant. Water only after the soil is completely dry, otherwise you run the risk of rotting the stem.
How often do you fertilizer these plants?
Usually around once a month when it is actively growing.
Isn't there loss of nutrients or fertilisers when the water drips through the soil?
My jade containers probably twice as big as yours and it’s bone dry if I do your method of constant watering I hope it doesn’t kill my jades?

Is the glass container the pot that it came in? If you want to keep it in there you may have to cut back on watering even more and be careful to not give it too much. If you can repot it then I would recommend a terracotta pot. Does this help?
Would the same watering care be for ruby necklace? She is still in a plastic pot & always super top dry. I have been bottom watering her & she still isnt happy ...
I have no experience with this particular plant, but it is a succulent and the watering should be very similar.
Succulents love a bright sunny spot. What type of light is your plant in?

I have some mixed succulents arrangments in low rise but large pots, no drainage. It is beautiful but I am almost scared to water them! When I do, just a little bit, they don’t seem to like it! And then my succulents outside thrive in all that rain water. And live through ours harsh Quebec winters! What do you do when the pots have no drainage?? Please help? THX 🙂
Hello! I will drill a hole in those pots that don't have a drain hole or i would suggest removing them and getting a pot with sufficient drain hole(s). Most times in pots without drain holes the top of the soil is dry but the lower portion is wet.
Hello! I could really use your help. I am starting to make mini gardens with succulents and cactus, and i tend to cover several parts with sand or pebble. Either for me or if i sell it to somebody, how is it possible to check the moisture and estimate how often do we have to water since the soil is covered by other materials?
Hello. Lately I have been using a wooden food grade skewer to determine moisture levels. Push it all the way to the bottom and let it sit there for a minute then pull it out. It will clearly show on the skewer the moisture so you can know how far down it has dried out.
My jade has red around the leaf edges. I think too much sun. Any thoughts?
They do get red edges when in light....not harmful to the plant at all.
I love Jade plants but don't have them any more because they always got weird bumps on the leaves. I had no idea what that was and afraid it would infect my other plants. Is that just a Jade thing?
I have never really noticed bumps on mine. Were they a certain color?

Great video! Any tips on why my graptoveria has brown leaf ends? They're really small brown points. I bought them online and potted them about 5 days ago and I haven't watered them yet. :)
Perhaps a fungal infection on the leaf.

On rainy days when humidity in air is high is it ok water ing once fifteen days. It's outside but under a sheild no direct sunlight or rain

Just pay attention to the soil and leaves. If you haven't watered for awhile, the soil is dry and the leaves looked dehydrated then it probably needs some water. I always recommend finding a pot with a large enough drain hole for excess water.
If you have such a large drainage hole why doesn’t soil come out when you’re watering in the manner you are?
I place a rock over the drain hole....allows the water to drain but doesn't plug it completely
Bottom watering is the best way to water succulents fill a bowl. Or your sink. And lit the plant drink. What it needs, I let it sit. For about 15 20 minutes. Until all the soil is wet and then let it all drain out. And. Do it again when it's time
I have a water softener. Does that mean i have to use bottled water? Can i use brita filtered water?

Hello! I also have a water softener, but like most houses your drinking water tap will not be hooked up to the softener system. Each city/jurisdiction will have different additives in the water like chlorine that may effect plants. I bought a water filter that secures onto the faucet and claims to remove elements like chlorine. You can also fill up a container and leave it out over night and allow those elements to evaporate. My plant leaves turns yellow n falls down ,I am keeping them in sunlight too
It is normal for some older leaves to turn yellow and fall off
So many people don't understand succulents and watering. People can't handle seeing dry soil and they tend to keep it wet which is a no no!

I have all my succulents indoors throughout the winter and have them all near a south facing window. They get plenty of sun and actually continue to grow. Maybe cut back on watering for the winter month, but essentially nothing should change from summer to winter care. The only one I've placed outside before is one of my Jade plants. Does this help?

Everything Plants I don’t think there’s an single winter month here in Canada lol. I was told to bottom water them until the top soil was wet then let them completely dry, Repeat. Isn’t that better for succulents?
Hello! I have a very small succulent in a small non draining pot. Often with these types of purchases, it’s hard to even feel or are the condition of soil to determine if it needs water. Any tips?
Hello. With most of my succulents, I will put it in a terracotta pot with succulent/cactus soil mix. Once you over water a succulent it is almost always too late and the plant begins to die. So, I would reccomend a porous terracotta pot with a drain hole. I can always find them at the dollar store.
My plant has become too big. How do you shape it ??
Depends on how you want it to look. I start by trimming off any dead foliage. Then I will cut off any branches that are growing in a downward direction, so they don't snap.
My mom recently buys a jade plant. It has spider mites on it. How to remove it? And how to prevent? Thank you
If I see a smaller patch of spider mites I will use a couple drops of dish soap mixed in water and spray the entire plant off. Once it dries then I will hose it off with a steady stream of water to knock them off.
If there are alot of webs then get an insecticide that kills them on contact like a doktor doom spray. Let it dry and then rinse the plant off with water and keep a close eye on them for reappearing.

The very first plant in the video is the Jade plant {crassula ovata} Give it lots of bright light, water only when the soil in completely dry and use the appropriate soil.

No....you don't need to let it dry out. Or at least I don't think there is any specific rules with repotting.

when should i move my store bought jade to a bigger pot??
That is a tough questions without being to see the plant. Typically if plants need repotting you will see roots growing out of the bottom of the pot, have to water more frequently then normal, and even the plant doesn't look healthy anymore.

Hi there. I recently saw that one of my succulent was turning Yellow and so i digged it up to find that the root was sorta rotting and had bugs inside it. Is there a way to save it or is it too late.😭😭 . Some Leaves are still green and i tried propagating it but it never works . Please help
Without seeing the plant it is hard to tell if it is worth saving or not. By the way you are describing it....it may be too late.

Ps. The ac or heat is on in my house most of the year; so it stays at a low humidity.
Hello. Sounds like you are doing everything correctly. The only other factor that comes to mind is maybe the soil moisture in the pot is contributing to the mold.
As far as I know the white mold is harmless to your plants. You could try cleaning the outside with peroxide and see if that gets rid of the white stuff. Good luck.

I wouldn't use vinegar unless the pot was empty. Just incase it absorbs through the pot....wouldn't want any root burn.

So would you keep a small jade plant inside? I have mine outside and it’s underneath an umbrella so it’s doesn’t get direst sun. Is that good?
Big or small they can go outside! And yes you are doing it correctly....slowly introduce it to sunlight as it can get leaf burn.
My jade plant have red stricksnon the side... is that mean they are not healthy?

Any succulent needs TONS of light to survive. Is you desk near a window?

@@mariadanielacortez9677 lots of offices have lights that plants still grow in.....might be a bit slower. Maybe find out what kind of lights and dona bit of research there. Make sure you don't over water this plant or it will have a very short life lol
Research low light plants for offices and many options like snake plants, pothos and others will be better suited for your setting.
