Many of my older plants I am finding have dry, brittle roots. New babies will root and then dry up! I get to keep all the succulents after the event and I have no idea where I am going to put them all!! Thank you so much for all the effort you put into these videos!! ❤

    Wow Liz that triple head ebony is going to be absolutely gorgeous!!! I finally ditched my bluebird leaves LOL but I do have the tip growing in a nursery tray well it finally sprouted roots I should say. It's funny how that sprouted roots so much faster period and I still can't tell if it's just the leaves because I did leave the tiny baby leaves on the tip and one bigger one so I can't tell if it's the tip of the stem that rooted or the leaves. But anyway I threw away my tray of bluebird leaves because they were not doing anything they were getting too wrinkled and shriveled.

      Not all succulents will propagate from leaves. Some like Graptoveria Purple Delight grows fast and others like Echeveria Romeo & Laui can take months or never to grow a pup. Best to practice on the easy growing ones first to gain your confidence and in no time, you'll be growing them like a pro. ☺

    I purchased my first succulent at Home Depot and when I brought it home all the leaves fell off. I took it back and got my money back. Now I inspect their plants before buying and I wait for new shipments and buy it before they kill it. Good advice on saving the succulents.

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  3 роки тому

      Most succulents form commercial nurseries are pump up with fertilizers to grow them fast, but the downside is that most are weak plants that won't even survive the transport. I find that when they're grown slowly with TLC, they are much stronger and more beautiful plants.

    Liz, I'm gonna be top dressing with pumice or something from now on on your advice. I didn't realize they could be so sensitive that just leaf contacting wet soil could introduce rot. Also, you would like succulent shopping here in the states. I feel like the prices are more reasonable here. Your 86° F makes me realize just how far Canberra is from North Idaho😁

    Liz, have you try cutting stems when you have leave rot? I have experienced leaves dropping off and leaves rotting and roots and stem looks fine but if you cut it you will fine that the stem has actually rotted inside. So need to cut all the rot off to save as much as possible.

    Hi Liz! I'm learning so much from your replies to comments! Thank you for taking to time to answer 😊. I have a question, sometimes I wait until my succulent leaves go abit soft and wrinkly before I water it. But I find that watering it doesn't puff up the succulent leaves again. I leave the pot in a shallow dish of water for 1 day and it's still dry and wrinkly. I take it out of the dish, wait a few days before watering it again, then it rots 😭 I hope you can give some advice on this. Watching from Malaysia

      Sounds to me like your soil mix has become hydrophobic and therefore the roots of your succulents can't absorb water. You might need to change your soil mix.
      I have a video below explaining this phenomenon of soaking the plant in water it survives. Keep it dry and sprinkle a little water, then it rots. Hope this helps.

    Hello Liz, it is summers here and the temp where I stay goes to 40-42 degree Celsius. I have two spots to keep the succulents, one receives direct morning sunlight upto 10:30 am and the other receives bright light the entire day (shaded against a wall). What would you suggest?

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  Рік тому

      Most succulents "in nature," grows in open areas receiving full sun, with temperature that can go as high as 50°C and overtime have manage to adapt/survive to their environment. This is the reason why succulents are ban in some States here in Australia receiving high temperature.
      In captivity, ☺ we mostly get plants grown in nurseries that are under cover. So, we have to acclimate these succulents to our locations. If they have been grown in the open, straight for at least two months, they should have been acclimated to their area and can be grown out in the open with no covering despite the high temperature. Keeping them dry in summer will also stop them from burning.
      The ones grown in the shade for most of the day will be leggier than the ones grown in full sun. I would suggest slowly acclimating them to be grown in open areas. A shade cloth or lace curtain will help in the transition.

      Take it out of the soil and air dry it. Keep it in a dry airy spot away from direct sunlight. Let it dry out and if it's still savable, it will grow new roots. This will take a couple of weeks if the temperature is warm/hot. If not....then it's time to buy a new one.

    Is the purpose of the topsoil dressing? What do you use for it?

      To make it look pretty, helps in containing the soil when watering and to a certain extend...also helps deter some pest.

    O dear, it's so sad to see a newly bought succulent to rot on you. Hopefully all the leaves will sprout and turn out you have so many of them. BT W, what kind of succulent is that? The rotting one and you picked many leaves from? 😁
