The "trick" with the stroopwafels you get with the supermarket is to put them on top of your cup of coffee (or tea) as a kind of lid to warm them up before you enjoy them.

All of the Indonesian spices were wonderful & since everything was put out in it's own little container you could create something fun. With the big pancake I would roll up the naturel ones with stroop en/of poedersuiker but the filled pancakes (my favorite is one with bacon and cheese or in dutch spek en kaas) with a bit poedersuiker (powder sugar) and slice it in to pieces. If you roll the filled ones they get so big and I like to enjoy my food instead of quickly chewing it away 😉

@@WilliamBennett-cl2le Most bars today serve the jenever and beer in separate glasses, where you drink the jenever “ad fundum” and then chase it with beer. But the old fashioned way was dropping the small glass of jenever in the large glass of beer. This version is nowadays called a “U-boat” or “onderzeeër”. The little glass is submerged in the large glass and the trick is not to get hit with the small glass when drinking the last of it.

One of the best food tastings in Amsterdam I have seen on UA-cam. Lived most of my life in Amsterdam, now expat in Athens and you really showed a lot of the real stuff. However, besides brodjes kaas the Dutch eat many other things in the morning, like pindakaas (peanut butter) and hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles). Ossenworst is originally brought to the Netherlands by Jews, like Pekelvlees (kind of pastrami)

I love The Netherlands, lived in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Wish you had discussed Genever, described, Juniper berries, etc. herring. The fact that Indonesian food is such an important part of the cuisine there and describing the rijstaffel.. That Genever is served ice cold, etc. Also frites.. served with mayo and bought on the street. Going in the tents for puffertjes in the winter and seeing the griddle they are cooked on... Wondering what the sauce was on the broodje kaas, I'm used to just put a bunch of real butter (boeren roomboter) and cheese on a white bun. (Or on so-called tijger bruin, if I'm being healthy lol) love adding some cucumber or tomato slices, for taste and some moisture, as just bread and cheese can sometimes be somewhat dry 😅
Thank God you got the original stroopwafel and not the tourist trap of all sorts of add-ons 🙏
About Febo, hardly ever go there, I believe most people have a small fryer at home. (Allthough a lot of ppl have airfryers instead now, bc thats healthier than frying in oil) and all the snacks to fry are sold at the supermarkets in the frozen section. Lots of families will then (air)fry some in the weekends. Lot cheaper than Febo or any other 'snackbar' 😅
Oeh, and you should 💯 try spek-pannenkoek or ham-cheese with dutch 'champignon-ragout' (unox brand preferably)
Also, if you visit in winter, come to Friesland for the real Snert (erwtensoep aka pea-soup) 🤩 and what's also popular in winter in the Netherlands are all the different kinds of stampot we have!

    • @waysoftheworld_

I think it was just some garlicy spread on the cheese sandwich. In hindsight it may have been fun to start with the broodje kaas at my opa's apartment with just butter on an open face bread. And yes, I have had some fried snack dinners when my uncles were in charge of cooking... I don't like it 😂 we usually try to avoid Netherlands in the winter haha - and because my fam now lives in Florida we never really had much erwtensoep. maybe once a year when it was a bit cooler and there was family in town bringing the Hema worst (i think 🙃).

I never have (or had) a saucijzenbroodje for breakfast. They're more like a snack ... when you're shopping. I had/have cheese for breakfast, but on a baguette. If they have bread for breakfast, most people I know have sliced bread with different toppings. I usually have a mix of savory and sweet: for example cheese, leverworst and peanut butter (on 3 different slices of bread).

    Hello Aimara & Gordon 😊
I came across your video amongst numerous other's but yours captured it a little bit better.
I am glad to see that you found Van Dobben because they're serving things typical for Amsterdam!
1st, Ossenworst origins lay in this city. 2nd, you must try broodje Van Dobben (kroket) next time 😉. 3rd, try broodje Halfom (cooked liver and salted meat) with butter and pepper or how ever you like it. In my opinion it doesn't need salt added. It's a typical Amsterdam broodje, just try it!
Haring is an all-time Dutch favorite, adding pickles comes from, you probably guess it, Amsterdam! Don't go to Leiden and ask for union and pickles with your haring, they will shake their head and ask if you're from Amsterdam 😂.
Hagelslag is liked by almost every Nederlander, kids like it most but only a few grow over it! 😄 Personally I like it with peanut butter. It's always best to put it on fresh- or toasted bread, with butter of course! You'll have fun trying it without 😅
I can go on commenting on your video, talking about Amsterdams Zuur and which food from Suriname 🇸🇷 and Indonesia 🇮🇩 that I like 😋. I suggest that you do some research for yourself, maybe ask your family about it. Great food during the winter months!
I hope to see you back in December! ❤

Broodje Kaas: (and yes, Kaas is with a capital K, One hill I will die on) I don't eat it every day anymore but yes, absolutely a staple of Dutch food. Personally I rather have the "Tosti", the Dutch variant of the grilled cheese sandwich
Saucijzenbroodje: Perfect for when you are traveling by train. A coffee and Saucijzenbroodje from Kiosk is always a winner while watching the cows roll by.
Stroopwafel: It is actually one wafer split in two. The "stroop is a syrup made from beetsugar based molasses, brown caster sugar (called basterd zuiker in Dutch) and real butter (called Roomboter in Dutch). For tourists taking a package with them back home. Make a big mug of thee (or coffee) and place your stroopwafel on top as a lid and keep it there for about two minutes. The wafer and stroop will slightly warm up making the cookie softer and more delicious.
Poffertjes: The man was correct, you eat them with butter and sugar, all the other "flavors" are purely for tourists. This is also true for the different types of Stroopwafel.. most Dutch will take them just naturel and warm tyvm.
van Dobben, famous for their Kroketten and bitterballen. Their biggest competitor is probably Kwekkeboom which also hails from Amsterdam.
I went to school in de Jordaan, partime SVH school at Elandsgracht (school for cooks, waiters and everyhting related to the hospitality industry)
Biterballen (plural), not Bitterbaalen ;) I bet those are from van Dobben heheheh. And yes, a Bitterbal (singular) and a Kroket are basically the same thing. One is a one bite version (well maybe two) and the other a 3 bite version (maybe 4)
The mustard looked to be "Grove Zaanse" which is the best mustard in the world (another hill I will die on)
Bamibal/schijf and Nasibal/schijf (Bami is an Indonesian noodle dish, Nasi is an Indonesian rice dish) are only vegetarian if explicitly mentioned. There are also versions that contain small pieces of ham or chicken. So vegetarians should take note of that. As for Febo... haven't been there is years, I prefer the "snackbar"
Jamin nowadays is a sad leftover from a really iconic candy store franchisein the Netherlands. Jamin (founded by Cornelius Jamin in 1870) hails from Rotterdam. They used to sell every type of candy imaginable, most made by Jamin themselves. There wafer icecream sandwich was iconic with Xenials and probably Millenials as well. They were the Dutch version of Wonka. Nowadays most of what they sell is made by the big companies.
Jenever: Incorrect information. first, it is spelled correctly but said wrong. It is not a kopstotertje, it is a Kopstoot. Secondly a Jenever is not a kopstoot. A Jenever and Beer (seperate glasses) is a kopstoot. You down the Jenever and follow it up with the beer. There is a version called "Duikboot" (submarine) where the glass with Jenecer is dunked into the beer (wglass and all... just like *bloop* ) It is called Kopstootje because the combination can "hit you in the head"
For the best pancakes in the Netherlands you have to go to Naturpark Lage Vuursche, in the little village of the same name you find the best pancake restaurants in the country, third hill I will die on. My personal favorites there are the Bosrand and Restuarant de Lage Vuursche.. purely based on how they look as all the pancake restaurants are top notch.

If you go to Van Dobben, you can try the kroket (also on a white roll with the mustard). It's effectively the same thing as bitterballen, so consider this mostly if you won't do those. If you eat fish, raw herring with fresh cut onions at one of the outdoor stalls is super typical. It's better to ask a local for a good one or check Google reviews, the herring isn't always equally good. Smoked eel, as well, is super typical - eel comes from a nearby lake/bay. Maybe 'Herring Stall Jonk' is a good option for you if you're in the area. Indonesian rice table 'rijsttafel' is also quite famous in Amsterdam, though obviously not originally Dutch. And if you find yourself in a typical Brown Bar, order a cheese platter so you get your fill of Dutch cheeses. French fries with mayo or mayo & peanut sauce is fantastic. There is now a restaurant in A'dam that serves stampot and traditional 'home cooked' dishes, but it is touristy because the Dutch wouldn't eat this outside the house. The restaurant is called 'Moeders'. Have fun in Amsterdam!

Kopstoot is a combination of 1 genever and 1 beer. Sip the genever and take beer, and repeat.

No, swallow the jenever whole, then proceed to drink your beer.
