Bruce’s “bouncing” is from his belief to be flexible and adaptable in a fight, not restricted to stances. You can see him adapt with it in the fight with Chuck Norris. That’s why he admired Muhammad Ali, and wanted to fight him. Also, Bruce’s first student in the US was James Glover, an African-American.
Wowww we never knew that 😳 Thank you so much for that interesting fact ! I can definitely see how Muhammad Ali fights like Bruce Lee ! That’s amazing !
Rants And Reactions That’s one of the reasons Bruce had a following from all races, especially in the black and Asian communities. You should check out the documentary “Be Water” that came from Showtime last month. REALLY good!
Actually, IIRC, Bruce Lee was inspired to adopt Muhammad Ali's bouncing fighting stance after watching Ali fight. That might be just part of the legend which has surrounded Bruce's life, but I believe it has a grain of truth to it. Jeet Kun Do is, after all, a blending of several martial arts.
The jumping around everyone already mention was his influence from Muhammad Ali. It’s what we were taught in Jun Fan / Jeet Kune Do. You have to be light on Your feet so you see Bruce bouncing on the balls of his feet like a boxer in the ring, you want to be mobile and quick! And because he was forming what worked for him in his fighting style . In squaring up with O’Hara he displayed Wing Chun Gung Fu with The trapping hands and the punches he delivered are not like that of a boxing style where the fist when punching is vertical and not horizontal like a boxers punch. As you can see when he went in for the sequence of punches to his chest in Wing Chun it was a vertical fist and in JKD he called it the Straight Blast, and his kicks were wicked fast and how he moved in for the kicks were footwork adapted from fencing to close the gap, his movies he displayed Jeet Kune Do ( The Way of the Intercepting Fist ) when he had his 1st 2 schools in Seattle and Oakland and even the LA Chinatown school they where called Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute ( or Bruce Lee’s Gung Fu ) since his name Lee Jun Fan . But in the LA Chinatown school he changed the Name of Style from Jun Fan to Jeet Kune Do ( but still those who practice and study Bruce Lee’s art it’s still Jun Fan/JKD. The 1st mention of JKD was a tv series called Long Street where the title of an episode was Way of the Intercepting Fist!
In case you didn't get why the 'animosity' between Bruce's character and O'hara, that flashback at 1m47 with O'hara in the background was Bruce's sister committing suicide to prevent O'hara and his gang from raping her, in the beginning of the movie. Bruce would be OK in just beating him up in the tournament, but O'hara's treachery gave him the perfect opportunity to avenge his sister's death.
You guys are awesome!! Backstory on this scene...it was revenge for Lee's sister in the movie. Earlier in the movie Lee's uncle told him about how O'hara and his men tried to rape his sister and she committed suicide to prevent from being raped, that was the flashback back before he dropped O'hara...that's why he made that face after stomping him out. Also, Bruce Lee was a huge Ali fan and studied Ali's foot movements. They were actually in real life talking of doing a fight match for charity but sadly Bruce Lee died. Last thing, that kick he did on Ohara where he knocks him backwards...the kick was so powerful that one of the men trying to catch Ohara broke his arm!! True story!!
Did you watch the rest of the film, or just this scene? If not, you don’t realize the circumstances leading to it. The fight for Bruce’s character is a personal one, hence his face when he kills Oharra. Even the reason for bowing is explained in the beginning of the film.
Sound effects were overplayed but he always hit like that! IP Man taught him well! Also that last move he basically smashed dude's nuts. If you remember Undercover Brother with Eddie Griffin, he parodied this exact ending!
I Remember Back in Days watching Bruce Lee Movies in Theaters ! People used to go Crazy and go Home Imitating His Moves ! It was Fun Watching Crowd , especially the Black People in The Theater !
The reason why fighters and specifically Bruce Lee make these sounds is intimidation tactics, but also, it’s found that expressing a sound allows martial artist to increase their explosive power. It’s sorta like a battle cry
The kick you seen before the bottles are picked up, was real... Bruce was upset with the actor who had accidentally cut him with the glass...in a earlier rehearsal
For your information, Bruce lee get the legs step from mohammad ali boxing legs style step into his mixed martial jeet kun do. And bruce lee love boxing. He take every advantage from many martial art style and and dispose the disadvantages from every martial art and use the other advantage from other style to beat other style
Jeet Kune Do is the way of the intercepting fist that the late great martial arts master of Jeet Kune Do Bruce Lee 1st invented the fighting style by becoming water. Bruce Lee once said and it's inspiring and encouraging that you must become water, be like water because you and water are one 👌
If you watch the entire movie of Enter The Dragon then you would know that there is a back story between Bruce & O'Hara which explains why this fight is so personal and emotional for Bruce. As for suggestions of what else to watch? Well personally I think that you should watch all of his movies from beginning to end. But for a specific fight scene, Bruce Lee vs Kareem Abdul Jabar from the movie Game Of Death, Bruce's last movie which had to be finished posthumously as he had passed away midway through making it. He had only shot a handful of scenes when he died, so the studio used footage of some of his other films, stunt doubles, look alikes, a little creative editing and rewriting of the script (his character gets shot in the face and gets reconstructive surgery, explaining his "looking different" for instance). His fight with Kareem Abdul Jabar (who in real life was one of Bruce's kung fu students) is one of the few scenes that he had finished.
Yes in any martial tournament weather it's. Full contact or non full contact fight it's disrespectful when you bow but your opponent doesn't bow back. It means your opponent doesn't respect you because he believes that you haven't earned his respects . It's just like in a UFC fight when a referee says touch gloves if you like but one of the fighters just walks away without touching gloves because he feels that his needs to earn his respect.
Need to react to some of his fight in his first American acting job as Kato in the 1966 TV show The Green Hornet. They had to teach Lee how to hold back on his kicks cause he was kicking for real and hurting the stuntmen .
You're 100% wrong youngster. Bruce Lee (admittedly), said that he studied Muhammad Ali with the help of a mirror and a super-8 movie projector. That's where his movement-stylings come from.
You make a good point about his style of fighting. The way he hops around and moves is like a boxer. He was heavily influenced by Ali. Bruce Lee took all types of fighting styles and combined them.
How have u not seen enter the dragon?? Bruce Lee is the shit, that side kick on O'Hara was real btw, u need to watch the cave fight it's the best fight in the movie..
After seeing this so many times i just saw something i never noticed. When Bruce was instructing the kid he popped him on the back of the head and said never take your eyes off your opponent even when you bow. He just bowed and wasnt looking at his opponent at all. Shame shame Bruce! Hes still the man and the legend though!
Bruce Lee was a student of fighting not just martial arts. Bruce Lee took the best from all fighters he liked. The movement or dance of Bruce was inspired by watching Muhammad Ali.
Bruce made that face after killing Ohara because his sister took her life because Ohara was going to rape her. So the face he made was because his sister was dead. It was a look of grief and sadness
..Bruce was an american....born in san francisco....but he had also some german blood inside...the grandparents from his mother were germans...he was a brother for every one...he didnt care bout races....against chinese traditions, "not allowed to teach martial arts to foreigners" he teached every one, black, mexicans and so on...he was a victim of rassism his whole life....so you are totaly right, he was your bro...he grows up in the hood, got into illegal roof fights, without mercy..but in.trouble with the law...for his own safety his father send him back to his home, back to the USA... his dancing, his rythm, his Suppleness...he has got that from Muhamed Ali....and from western fenching...he loved it
I watched this movie film over and over as a kid, I was born in the 80s, this scene was always captivating to me because Bruce is such a humble fighter but hits all the big notes (we know, it’s his movie) but he really paved the way for full action style and the likes of my favorite Jackie Chan!!
Those bottles were not props and one of them cut Bruce’s arm. Also the sidekick he did when he kicked him all the way to the chairs was real. Bob Wall who was a real martial artists told Bruce give me all you got. So he kicked him so hard that he broke his sternum and he broke the arms of two of the guys who caught him.
You're right about his hopping around and his footwork my man. Bruce took that from muhammad ali. He idolised ali and always wanted to meet him. Now watch an Ali fight and you will see the same footwork.
That expression was about catharsis. He jumped with full force and put all his anger and sadness in that stomp because he was killing his sister's murderer. boards don't hit back, famous line because so what you can break a board, real humans move, its a ancient chinese kungfu philosophy of yin and yang, light and hard energy no point being strong if you aren't fast enough to catch your opponent, no point being fast if you land 100 punch and nothing happens. Human being move, i.e you need to apply application/theory to prac. Hence why we have sparring

Bruce used to study Muhammad Ali that's where he got his footwork from good ol western boxing
Fun fact: In the beginning, those 3 punches to the face had to be slow down because Bruce Lee was too fast for the camera.
They used to tell him to slow it down in a lot of movies and especially for the Green Hornet show.
woww !! Thats insanely fast !
Very very true FPS couldn't keep up with him even when they asked him to slow it down just a bit
@Keller Smith It wasn't Bob Wall it was Bob Baker, the guy who played the russian, from the Chinese Connection.

Bruce Lee would study films of the way Muhammad Ali moved in the ring!! So in a way he is himself is moving around as a brother would!!
the bowing before interacting in Kung fu or oriental action is an act of respect and acknowledgment of readiness to start the duel
