  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi may be the biggest movie of 2017. Seeing the return of Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron and Luke Skywalker to the big screen. In this review, I try to sum up what I loved and what I disliked about the film.

If Snoke was a boring antagonist, what is the point for creating such a character? Why bringing him even up then? The story could also start with Kylo being the Supreme Leader from the start.

  • @battleupsaber462

Regarding Snoke, i think killing him, in this movie at least, was a good move. Snoke as a character was just a cheap Palpatine ripoff and killing him makes the story far more interesting, it subverts the "rule of two" dynamic we're used to, and now Kylo is in complete control of the First Order. Which is a very interesting direction to take things.
The problem with killing him however, doesn't come from within this movie, but rather from the context of this movie being part of the larger saga. We're supposed to believe that this guy managed to turn Han and Leia's son bad, destroy the new Jedi order, found the First Order and single handedly bring the galaxy back into chaos. You can't just kill off someone like that, and not give a single detail about who he is or how he accomplished such a feat. It just feels kinda disrespectful towards long time fans, knowing that their heroes have been beaten by some guy who we have little to no info about.
Then again, we didn't get Palpatine's backstory until 20 years after ROTJ, so there's still time to fix things.

BattleUp Saber tfa built snoke to be not a clone, but this film treated him as a clone, a lot of things that built to not be copies this film just made them copies, like how the first order was a small but powerful threat, yet in this film they're massive enough to take over the whole galaxy.

I have a feeling we'll get a back story on him in 9 as we get more back story on Kylo Ren and the knights of Ren. Snoke is stil dead but now we know more making 8 better in retrospect.

Kylo's defeat to Ren is not as much a proof of Kylo's failure as it is a proof of Rey's ridiculous natural talents

Vinny Banana | I would rather have his backstory in a series that describes those 30 years.
We really need one where we get to understand how Luke and Leia got where they are, where we get to see Snoke and his Rise to power, and where we see the initial struggle of Kylo

    • @Arkalius80
      @Arkalius80 6 років тому +9

I agree with Greg about Snoke. He seemed different in subtle and interesting ways and it felt like there was an interesting story to tell there, but then in this film it felt like they just said "nevermind all that, he's a generic evil bad guy". I liked the decision to have Kylo Ren betray him, it plays super good, but they seemed to just give up on doing anything else interesting with him. Maybe they'll look more into his history in the next film... We'll see I guess.

My main problem with the movie was the lack of agency of the three main heroes, and lack of consequences for their mistakes. Think about it: Finn and Rose's plan leads to failure, but the failing doesn't end up mattering anyway, and at the end when Finn is about to sacrifice himself just so he can have an impact on this movie, Rose stops him (somehow). Poe also just buggers around as his seniors make and execute all the plans, and doesn't suffer any consequences for staging his coup. And Rey doesn't convince Luke to save anyone, Yoda and R2 do that, she doesn't convince Kylo Ren to turn to the light, she doesn't take part in the main battle and she doesn't kill Snoke. These are meant to be our heroes, and heroes should, at least to a certain extend, drive the plot, yet in this movie their actions are totally inconsequential.

The main three in Empire Strikes Back failed at everything as well.

    • @louiswilliamson2191
      @louiswilliamson2191 6 років тому +31

That's true, but the key difference is that in Empire Strikes Back, the main three suffer for their mistakes.
Leia and Han want to evade the empire; Luke wants to learn to be a Jedi and save his friends. They all fail, and so Han gets captured by the empire whilst Luke gets defeated and doesn't get the full Jedi training.
In The Last Jedi, Poe wants to evade the First Order, Finn wants to disable the tracking device to save the fleet and Rey wants to convince Luke to join them and turn Kylo Ren to the light. Everyone fails, but there are no consequences: Finn and Rose get captured, but BB8 busts them out anyway; Poe disobeys direct orders and stages a mutiny, but no-one is angry at him, and they still manage to get away from the first order. Rey fails to turn Kylo Ren to the light, but again she managed to get away with barely a scratch. Rey also fails to convince Luke to join them, but it's okay because R2-D2 and Yoda sort of end up doing that for her.

    • @Gyo5816b
      @Gyo5816b 6 років тому +6

While I agree that Poe didn't really suffer any personal consequences, and he never seems to show true remorse for his mistakes, and though the characters didn't necessarily face (at least shown in the movie) personal consequences, their actions had HUGE consequences in the whole. Because Poe sent Finn and Rose to find the "code-breaker", the found DJ, and then because they found DJ and got caught, is the whole reason that the First Order started destroying the resistance's escape ships on their way to Crait. If Poe had just listened to Holdo, his superior (although she could have communicated better), as her subordinate, the whole resistance would have escaped safely. It's their failure that causes most of the resistance to get wiped out. Those are some pretty dire consequences if you ask me, although you don't necessarily feel the weight of it naturally, which is probably a problem. While the characters didn't have consequences like death or similar, their actions affected the whole resistance.

She wasn't powerful enough to kill Snoke, but maybe she could've done the same as Kylo.
She also used Luke's teaching to lift up multiple rocks, opening the way for the Resistance to leave Crait and get on the Falcon.

I think it's the screen write made this way too obviously makes it felt flat. But it's not flat… it's actually good, just too obvious. The acting makes people felt dumb down. But remember this is a film ment for people who are also going to watch cartoon and buy toys. Apparently It is targeting a younger crowd. That's Disney right there…
Anyway I enjoy the movie even though there are many too obvious transition and surprise moments.

I seem to be opposite. I didn't like some scenes and entire sections of the story like Kantobyte, but I actually really enjoyed what the movie had to offer. I liked Luke's arc and hated Finn's, and some mistakes in the questionable tonal shifts of the movie were forgivable for me. I really loved the lightspeed scene and the one of the kid showing the Alliance symbol. I would even go as far to say that I enjoyed this movie as much as Return of the Jedi. I really don't like the amount of hate that Rian Johnson gets, being known as the one that "killed" Star Wars.

I don't fell like the kid at the end was there to "tug at your heart strings". He was there to enforce the point that in Star Wars all kinds of people, even "nobodies", can posses force powers and go on to become great heroes or villains. E.g: Darth Vader, Rey, possibly Snoke, so on.

  • @stealthyoctopus3231

I don't have a problem with just any version of an old, dark, and cynical Luke but like Mark Hamill I fundamentally disagree with how he was handled here. I just can't see Luke choosing to kill his own kid nephew in his sleep because he thinks Ben will become the next all powerful tyrant when he was able to turn Vader decades ago. What's even more ridicules to me is that after he's so sure Ben will turn out to be monster Luke doesn't look for him and try to reason with him. He should question himself and his beliefs sure but that doesn't justify leaving Ben to wreak havoc which he most likely would. If he thinks Ben is going to turn out that way and there was a chance to change him for the better there's now way he's getting there on his own after he was betrayed by his master, killed half of the other students, and becomes the leader of the rest. To me the new versions of both Han and Luke are incredibly selfish for how they abandoned Ben and Leia which (among other poor character decisions) undoes most of their progression from the original trilogy.
EDIT I should add that despite all that I liked Last Jedi more than Force Awakens or Rogue One but that's not saying much since I came out of them feeling pretty empty. At least with 8 I felt the Praetorian Guard fight was one of if not the fight scene best in any SW film and I really enjoyed Rey and Kylo's overall chemistry.

Stealthy Octopus I had that problem too. Overall I really liked the film, but I wasn’t a big fan of how they did Luke. I couldn’t jell with Luke making the same mistakes as the Old Jedi Order. I felt like it would have been more interesting if Luke’s beliefs were the source of his failure. If the movie revealed when Ben turned Luke had a chance to kill him but choose not to believing Ben could still be saved and that choice led to Ben coming back to destroy the academy and make Luke jaded on his belief that anyone can come back from the dark side. I felt like that would be more true to his character and would have explained better why Luke was so shaken.

That would be better but I feel like I've seen the aggressive student comes back and destroys everything plot point too many times. The more I think about it I feel we should've started with everything setting up this new trilogy. With Luke running an academy, Ben turning, some kind of conflict with Snoke, and the rise of the First Order. At least then everything might have more impact. We would've seen what the New Republic looked like and we might've cared when it was destroyed. What we got there was just a bigger version of the Death Star destroying Alderaan. However because it was just a rehash it meant less regardless of how big the explosion was. Snoke, Hux, and the First Order might actually feel like they matter too.

I liked the revelation about Rey's parents being nobodies, I just didn't like the way the revealed it. In my opinion, the whole scene would have been much more powerful, if she discovered the truth in the cave. Maybe that would have pushed her more towards the dark side a bit and then she would have an amazing powerful scene when she rejects the dark side and decides not to join Kylo Ren. I feel like they over-hyped Rey's parents in TFA, and now, people are underwhelmed with the revelation.
Also, I like the fact that Kylo killed Snoak, but I didn't like the fact that we don't learn more about his backstory. I see people comparing his character to the Emperor and how at first, the Emperor's backstory isn't revealed as well. I don't think that comparison makes sense. Yes, at first we didn't know anything about the Emperor, but this is like the 9th movie in this franchise, people know the universe and it's history, they know about the jedi and the sith, they know how their powers work. The last thing we knew was that the last of the sith, both the Emperor and Dart Vader, were killed. And now, we suddenly get this cool new character, who is super powerful, and obviously trained, but we don't know anything about him. It felt dissatisfying, people expected more and got nothing.
I liked Poe, I don't think that he should have had blind faith in his superior, since the whole plan, from his perspective, seemed really stupid and would have gotten people killed.

      @michosadventures 6 років тому +12

Yeah, it does seem lazy. What also bothers me is that they don't seem to have an overall story ready for the three movies. Yeah I agree, people are just being really stupid. Give it time and eventually they'll grow to just say "eh" which is what they really feel but for now it's just bash after bash. I really enjoy the movie but I do see the flaws quite clearly. For me the biggest weaknesses come in Canto Bight (not the idea or planet but the story contained within) and Rose. Rose is supposed to be the angel on Finn's shoulder as Rian Johnson himself has stated that most of his new characters were there to challenge our characters from the first film. The problem arises in that it would have been way more effective to have Finn learn on his own and DJ is a better character out of the two. Rose just has the absolute cheesiest lines in the movie and makes very odd character choices that thwart some other character decisions.
All that being said, I still really enjoy this movie and it has so much great, especially with its characters, that I simply just cannot get behind all the negativity. I hope Episode 9 wraps this all up well and I do believe it will just that I hope it does take some risks especially with where all the characters have ended up now.

It seems like the biggest defense of this film is that it tried to do interesting things, but trying to do interesting things and succeeding at doing interesting things are totally different. The same argument has been used to defend the prequels, and BvS more recently. This film does try to do interesting things, but since the plot doesn't make sense, the characters never finish an arc, and the tone is all over the place, none of those ideas lands the way it should. For instance, through the training scenes Luke keeps bringing up the idea that there is no Light and Dark side to the Force; it's just the Force. But when the final scene of that idea's arc comes and Rey and Kylo have defeated Snoke and his guards, instead of the two Force users teaming up and doing something interesting, the film drops that idea completely and goes back to good vs evil.

As someone who loves The Last Jedi, I am grateful that you eloquently elaborated the problems the movie has that many people failed to do so, like BuzzFeed did a video of this one guy's problems with the movie and I was like pressed how circlejerk-y it was.
First off, you basically made my feelings on the whole casino storyline very clear now. Before watching this video, I was unsure whether to like the storyline or not because I do enjoy it while also feeling like it's basically filler. I definitely liked the idea out of it but it could have been executed way better that would have fitted into the movie way naturally. It sucks that two POCs were in this storyline and their potential has been wasted. I am especially upset that Rose's debut was in this storyline because I thought she is really cool and it's nice to some Asian representation on the big screen. I just hope Episode 9 would provide them a better arc.
Second, I love Poe but after watching this video, I feel very sad that he did come out a bit of a rebellious idiot. I find the whole conflict between him and Holdo to be very interesting but it could have been way better.
I am glad we are on the same page with the Luke-Rey-Kylo storyline. Honestly, this entire storyline was basically the reason why I consider The Last Jedi as my favorite Star Wars movie, despite its flaws. There were so much high stakes in this movie and those stakes just basically overshadowed any problems I have with the movie.
Great video dude! Are you going to do more videos based on The Last Jedi?

At it's highpoints this movie had some of the best Star Wars I have ever seen, but then there were also a lot of moments where the humor really ruined my immersion into the movie. I rewatched "The Force Awakens" just before and for some reason it didn't really work for me, even tho I liked it, when I watched in the movie theatre for the first time. At that point it's really up to the viewer to decide if they really came from "nothing". lol

Except that Shmi being non-Force sensitive does nothing on the fact that the Force shoved all its midi-chlorians into her, and then conceived a child to pass them onto Anakin. Also, you completely glossed over the fact that the Jedi didn’t even want Anakin because he was eight years too old; they only took him in pretty much as a favor to Qui-Gon.
Being Force-sensitive isn’t necessarily genetic, but the protagonists of the films up to this point were basically a single family. And yes, the Skywalker saga is a family epic, which is why it helps that a person outside the family closes it out.

I liked this movie, but there were a couple things I don't get; like Kylo ren's motivations, is he just power hungry? Why is he evil? Why does Rey want to redeem Kylo even though she called him a murderer and a monster? I also don't get Finn's arc. Why does Finn try to sacrifice himself for the rebellion at the end, when at the beginning he was going to run away because he thought the rebellion was doomed? I mean nothing really happened to cement him becoming a full time rebel and believe in their cause. What did Finn learn to change his character? If anything he should've learned that the resistance and the first order are two sides of the same coin. Why does rose kiss Finn? They've just met and she was disgusted by him trying to run away a couple hours earlier. And the black dark side hole thingie, what is that? What does it do? Rey went in and nothing happened to her. Could someone please explain these bits to me.

Maybe I can help out a lil...
So Kylos reason of evil was even touched in ep 7 as being compromised by Snokes influence during his training and even Luke saw that, hence why Luke tried to kill him. Also he was originally trying to be a carbon copy of Darth Vader which he lets go of during this movie.
Rey during her force talks with Kylo finds out he is conflicted with the light/dark side of the force and thinks he can be redeemed like Vader.
I thiiink Finn comes to terms that the rebellion is worth fighting for by seeing Rose's dedication to its ideals and deciding that DJ's point of view is wrong and the resistance is worth fighting for. (Gonna have to rewatch to make sure) Also I think the fight with Cap. Phasma really engraved his choice. Rose kissing Finn probably has something to do with her fangirling on him or having caught feelings, I like the character a lot but I do not ship them!
The black hole was like the tree on dagobah in ep. 5. Just filled with the dark side and showed her visions but like she said to Ben she found nothing there. My thoughts on those points but if I'm wrong I'd love know!

I didn't mind Rey coming from nothing. But when you speak of a small universe, how small was the First Order? A few Star Destroyers, a Dreadnought (destroyed) and a command ship (heavily damaged). I kept wondering when more First Order ships would jump in and cut off the fleeing Resistance ships.
As to Holdo, she didn't need to kill herself. In Star Wars, it was established that a ship could be abandoned and then set to go into light speed, then jump to its destination as a decoy. So she should have been able to turn the ship around, set the jump to hyperspace on a timer, then get on an escape pod as her ship did its thing.
But lets face it -- the REAL issue with "Last Jedi" is that it is full of "F-U" moments to Star Wars canon, to "Force Awakens," and to hardcore fans. Someone pointed out Kylo Ren's "let the past die." I think Rian wanted to kill the past to establish something different, not feeling a need to be fettered by canon.

Anyone who says a movie is saying FU to them is taking entertainment far too personally. I don't believe the director had any intention of attacking people's ideas, though he did subvert their expectations, which Star Wars has done since the very beginning. Holdo could have put a timer, maybe, but it wasn't as though she had all the time in the world. She might have let Leia get killed in her attempt to save herself. The First Order, as explained in the crawl, has legions, which have been dispatched throughout the galaxy to seize control. I personally appreciated that the film felt more contained. A relatively small scale conflict shown on screen with our key characters all in danger constantly.

I think that Luke's story was greatly conceived, though it did lacked some clearer execution in respects to *explaining* it.
The Golden Jedi, after having turned his father back into the "light", was then faced with the challenge to be the very last Jedi. And he didn't have anyone to teach him what the Jedi were and what they were supposed to do. His teachers are both dead and they both explained very Little and at a very advanced age.
In fact, his only guide now are three jedi master force ghosts! Wait... no... make that one Jedi Master, one Jedi Knight and... a Jedi Knight turned Sith? Hmm...
Well, there's a lot of time to talk about the past, right?
"So... dad: why did you turned your back on the Jedi? Wait... what? How much of this is true? The Jedi aren't what I thought"
Luke then taught his sister how to use the force, posibly violating some laws of the Jedi and leading to the beginning of his realization that the Force should be for everyone.
And as he went on, his legend rose to the stratosphere while he himself was a mere mortal who had never even won a proper lightsaber battle. His legend: the greatest thing he ever did (mirroring what the Luke character did in the real world)
Then comes Ben ... and Snoke... And cinicism.
There's more tan enough room there for a series, but the fact of the manner is that Ben Solo was a teenager completely different from what Luke was when he was a teenager, and much more full of rage and darkness than even darth vader. He failed him, and retired.
And by the end, Luke comes back...
He is in fact a Prodigy Jedi, but he is not at all as tall as his legend. He is not capable of acomplishing even half of what the rumors would have you believe. He can't just go and fight the whole of the First Order.
But his Legend can. His legend can inspire the whole of the Galaxy to believe there is hope. His legend can come out and fight a whole army and win, and then misteriously dissapear to be ray of hope that might one day return to save the day
And so, Luke sacrificed his life to buy time for the rebelion while putting on a show for the generations to come, one about the legend of Luke Skywalker. A show that would inspire hope for the years to come. He survived a barrage of blasters unscathed, faced off Kylo Ren and had a lightsaber pass though him unscathed, all to finally mock the leader of the First Order and dissapear, perhaps to be seen again some day

I hated the film, for the same reasons everyone else in this comments section does so I won't get into it. What people aren't talking about is Holdos sacrifice undermines every space battle in star wars. Why would you bother with turrets and fighters when you can just launch a chunk of metal with a hyperdrive stuck on into enemy ships and destroy half the fleet. It's not even expensive, as many of the smaller ships have them, and the actual ship part can just be a giant rock with thrusters. Fleets, space stations, planets, anything is now easily destructible by anyone who wants too. You can't justify not using this tactic. You'd save on ships, lives, and time. Sorry Fallout, but war just changed.

I like the Finn and Rose storyline...but not in context of everything else. It's a fun little adventure but clashes with the rest of the plot so much that it's less enjoyable. Also it feels like Finn's arc from tfa was retreaded here. He tries to run away when things get tough and eventually learns to have something to fight for even if it means putting his life on the line.
I love Poe and I was under the impression that he was a pretty smart leader who cared more about bringing his squad home rather than glory and blowing things up, but I guess I'm wrong :/. And he does need flaws and this film is about failure so he has to fail somewhere but I feel like there has to be some other way to accomplish this than having him act out of character (imho). I thought the beginning was interesting character development for him but then it never ended like when Finn and Rose are explaining the tracker thing and he says "so we have to blow it up?" like he's just some brute who knows nothing but pulling triggers. And that scene where he has a little tantrum and knocks things over in front of command makes me cringe so hard!
Holdo wasn't obligated to tell anyone anything but I think it would've been wise to let the people whose lives she held in her hands know that she had a plan outside of stalling. A good leader should communicate with their followers. There was literally no reason to keep everyone in the dark about whether they actually had a plan. Think of how much anxiety was caused by people not knowing anything. If I were there I'd definitely consider jumping ship if I didn't know there was a plan. Plus I'd definitely tell the hothead who just got people killed by disobeying orders that morning. Or lock him in the brig to makes sure he doesn't do anything.

    • @Gigafrosty
      @Gigafrosty 6 років тому +9

For more evidence that Holdo's choice to not communicate was an overall bad idea look no further than this fact: Poe didn't mutiny on his own. There were others that joined him.
For evidence that Holdo's choice to stay silent was actually introduced as a stupid cheap writing ploy and didn't really have thought behind it: Leia decided to shoot Poe instead of talk to him.

    • @Shoulderpads-mcgee

As someone who did not like The Last Jedi, I really appreciate your approach to the film's flaws! Ultimately, in addition to the out-of-place humor and social commentary, it was the way the characters were treated. Rey was not the central focus in what should have been her film; her entire arch revolved around Kylo Ren. In addition, she is given masterful abilities without any real training, which makes her achievements feel... underwhelming. Meanwhile, Finn and Poe, two charismatic characters with an interesting dynamic, were pushed aside in a side-quest that ultimately went no where and had zero impact on their own development. There were a lot of secondary characters (DJ, Holdo, Rose, Phasma, and Hux) that were simply there -- while in previous installments, a lot of the secondary characters actually had a tremendous impact on the main characters, plot lines, and overall lore.
The Last Jedi is a visually stunning film that had a lot of continuity errors and writing issues. It attempts to use "themes" in order to justify otherwise illogical decisions made by characters. It is by attempting to continually "subvert our expectations" that continuity and depth become lost.

You know, just because Luke faded to black looking at twin suns doesn’t mean his story “came full circle”. That’s a really shallow apology for the 180 degree turn his character did for thirty years. And Hamill himself says it far better than the rest if us could, so there’s little point in repeating his disappointment and frustration. You can fin it online. All over the web.
It’s even more disappointing to hear you contort so violently to paint a happy face on such a profoundly shitty movie. It was disloyal to the classic characters and insults the longtime fans in a way that will ultimately leave the franchise foundering and rudderless. But that’s postmodernism for you.

I totally agree with you, I had the same feelings while watching. every time they cut back to fin's story I was counting the seconds until we could go back to the interesting plot and characters, at least until he gets on board the destroyer, his plot picks up then. honestly if you mentally excise the casino planet stuff from the story the movie is much better.
actually a lot of scenes in the film really capture the feel of a samurai move. like with the when Rin kills snoke and after they fight the elite guard while the room is burning around them is one of the best martial arts sequences in the series. the final confrontation between Luke and Rin almost feels like something out of 7 samurai in terms of how its shot and framed.
I don't quite get why some people are bent out of shape about Luke in this film. Mark Hamill's bitter old man is just amazing. frankly I wonder if the people who criticize that aspect have watched the original star wars recently. nothing we learn about Luke in this film is in any way out of character.
I am very happy to see a criticism of the movie that has some well reasoned arguments behind it and isn't just moaning because Luke wasn't portrayed as the demigod the extended universe turned him into. or the dreaded hurling of "she's a mary sue," oblivious to the fact that all evidence presented toward that claim are examples of common traits most protagonists have.

to counter the assessment of Poe, the Resistance is not a traditional military. if it was, Leia slapping Poe would have gotten her court martialed. And as for Holdo, while it is true she doesn't need to tell him the plan, she should've since aside from herself, Poe is the highest ranking officer and is a popular one at that. by refusing to not only tell him the plan or even to just cooperate in anyway (as a military leader should) she just insults him in front of the crew, tells him to follow orders and just leaves him in the dark, leading Poe to make several increasingly desperate and reckless choices like the mutiny.

  • @jrrthompson1996

I enjoyed The Last Jedi simply because I put a lot more weight into the Ben-Luke-Rey-Snoke dynamic than anything else.
The Resistance plot lines are incoherent nonsense that I found laughable: literally all of their problems could have been avoided if Poe, Finn, Rose, and Purple hair had been even remotely competent. Finn and Rose only got chased out of the casino and forced to rely on HackarManTM because they couldn't be bothered to park legally. Poe and Purple hair both decide their plans are need-to-know and consequently get dozens of their allies killed. Honestly if the Resistance is that incompetent they don't deserve to beat the First Order.
Fortunately, I went in expecting the Resistance part of the film to be garbage and wasn't surprised when I turned out to be right. The saving grace of this film (and possibly the franchise) is Adam Driver's Kylo Ren. His performance in this and the backstory with him and Luke absolutely made this film. From what I can tell, people who don't like TLJ either put more weight on the Resistance plotline, or are disappointed in Luke's handling.

The thing is, though, Poe disobeying is a GOOD thing. Imagine the base, but with a dreadnought still there with its orbital bombardment cannons, 22,000 stormtroopers, and extra vehicle compliments.
As well, yes he gets... 12 people Rebels killed, and almost all of them from a single bit of luck due to a tie fighter explosion. However, in sacrificing 12 lives, he destroys over 200k imperial troops (per Last Jedi tech manuals), significantly weakening the enemy. I'm sorry, but that's tactically brilliant, and his reward is a demotion, and to be called a hothead. Then, to top it off, Holdo uselessly keeps important information that would've easily gotten his support, and in no way would've thrown off the tactic. I'm former military, and there is no military that would've held off that information just for the sake of doing so, especially when it would give the entire crew a defined goal that would boost morale and confidence in a new command during time of crisis.

Respectfully, I disagree with your opinion that Canto Bight was just "giving Finn something to do." The experiences that Finn and Rose share in Canto Bight fueled his development as a person in a lot of ways and allowed him to have a full arc in TLJ. When we first see him (after Finn naked leaking bag, anyway), he's trying to run away. What Rose and Canto Bight teach him is that the conflict is bigger than himself and it allows him to have that great moment with Poe when "Luke" shows up; Finn wants to rush into battle to help, but Poe holds him back. That exchanged highlighted the development that both characters went through over the course of the film.
That said, it's honestly refreshing to see a negative take on that segment of the film that was still well-reasoned and -worded. When I saw the title I half-expected just a rant, but you backed your opinions up and acknowledged that other people might see it differently. The rhetoric around this movie has been so toxic since day 1 that it's sadly refreshing to see a thoughtful, nuanced take. Cheers.
((And, for what it's worth, I loved BB-8 being mistaken for a slot machine and then taking out a guard by firing coins at him. =P ))

I think it’s biggest problem was a stunning lack of continuity between the force awakens and the last Jedi. A bunch of plot lines were opened in TFA that were completely ignored in TLJ. Like the knights of ren: who the fuck are they? Do they even exist? They’re made out to be a big deal and we haven’t even seen them. And also, all of the characters are in the exact same place at the end as they are at the beginning. Nothing in the movie needed to happen- the story isn’t furthered at all. It just seems like Rian Johnson didn’t really care about furthering the story at all and just wanted to further his own agenda.

I loved the BB8 coin machine gun. It was the only "joke character slapstick" that ever really worked for me in recent Star Wars movies (and it landed a lot better for me than the spark-leak gag inside Poe's X-Wing). Jar-Jar was just kind of there and 3PO in Ep2 was just abysmal. The rest of the Canto Bight didn't really work for me. It's conceptually great to see actual people living in the galaxy, and I like the greying of lines with weapons supplies (which was really needed to contrast Rose's hatred of the upper class), but the segment is just way too long and convoluted, not to mention the Holdo/Dameron miscommunication renders the whole thing pointless.
On that note, I don't think Holdo's actions can be excused by "she outranks Poe, so Poe doesn't matter." First of all, this is a movie, and Poe is supposed to be one of the lead characters, but it feels like he doesn't get to do much of anything meaningful. Second, the Resistance is not a formal military, they're a very ideological rag-tag band, which means soldier morale and comradery should mean a lot more to them than a proper military. Holdo telling Poe, "You're the last thing we need right now," and keeping him in the dark for no particular reason doesn't make any sense, given that she's a new face only placed in power out of necessity in a desperate situation. She's earned the command, but she hasn't earned the trust, and she SHOULD be doing whatever she can to earn that trust. The fact that she doesn't bother presents Holdo as a stuck-up leader who does only what she has to and gets away with whatever the book will let her. I also think Holdo waited entirely too long to respond to the First Order shooting down the transports, we look at her staring out a window in horror for what feels like half an eternity. She's already more than likely on a suicide mission so she has no reason to pause and consider things like self preservation, she should have turned the ship as soon as she saw the first shot fired at the transports.
Love Rey. Luke isn't written the way I would have written him, but I can accept his story as valid, plausible, and interesting. It's just a shame that Carrie Fisher's death means the original trio will struggle to have any relevant representation in Ep9 (I expect a Luke Force ghost, but is that and Leia holograms going to be enough?). DJ worked for what he was there for, a reminder that scoundrels don't always turn out to be lovable like Han and Lando, but I don't need to see him again either; his arc feels complete. Finn has great character growth compared to where he was in The Force Awakens but he doesn't get to actually do anything meaningful. Rose is meh, I get what they're trying to do with her but it comes off as heavy handed. She does more or less save the CGI llama thing, I like her performance when she releases their steed (the actual chase was boring), but her hatred of the upper class and her ramming Finn in the end both come off as melodramatic. That's not hate on the actress or the character, I sincerely hope Ep9 treats her better. Poe, I want to like, but like Finn the movie just gives him almost nothing that feels like it actually matters.
I HATED the Ski Speeders. Fighter battles are the high point of Eps 4-7 for me. The Resistance flying in rust buckets literally falling apart just got way too over the top, that was this movie's "3PO Ep2 shenanigans" moment for me. It's a bit sad that in the movie's climactic battle, the Millennium Falcon is the only "good guy" ship worth a darn. I spent that battle waiting for Luke to fly his T-65 in and fire a torpedo into the cannon. Oh well.

The pacing was the problem with this movie--its hard to care about rey's training or finn's casino adventure when the resistance are literally sitting ducks and the audience is constantly aware of a timer in the back of their minds: "t-minus 2 hours until everyone else we care about in the star wars franchise dies !!" the tension was unsustainable, especially considering how many goals were set up and then thwarted (making the whole casino adventure and even rey's progress with Kylo ulitmately pointless). They also really overdid the amount of resistance members they killed off. How is it possible, as the audience, to care about whether or not the last surviving 400 or so survive when another 100 were being killed practically every 20 minutes? that kind of suspense needs to be built up to a satisfying climax, where theyve escaped mostly intact and are now trying to win a siege or their mining base. Scene to scene, the writing was mostly solid, but there really needed to have been more intervention with regards to the macro, i.e. the overall narrative structure.

My problem with Snoke and the sequels in general is that it doesn't square with the original series at all. Not having a backstory for Palpatine in the original trilogy was fine. We are introduced to this galaxy with the knowledge that there is a big evil empire that our heroes are fighting. The revelation that the evil empire is run by an evil emperor totally makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that episode VI ends with the empire is resoundingly defeated, the two remaining sith killed, and a new republic born. Then along comes VII, the good guys are rebels again, there is a proto-empire that somehow seems at least as powerful as the old empire was, and there is a new sith that comes out of nowhere. A bit jarring, but maybe the next movie will fill out the details and it'll make more sense. Nope! Within like 3 days the new big bad is killed with no explanation of where he came from, the first order controls the whole galaxy, and the rebellion is reduced to like twenty people.
The part that annoys me the most about the First Order's power in VIII is that it not only makes no sense among the universe as a whole, but it makes no sense coming from its direct predecessor. They are portrayed as a fringe element that, while powerful, is small enough that it was effectively ignored by the new republic. That is until its new superweapon blows up all the core planets of the republic. Cool, makes sense, they cut off the head of the Republic and will use this superweapon to rule with fear and consolidate their power. Except their superweapon is immediately destroyed, along with what someone could reasonable assume is the majority of their troops, supplies and leadership considering the weapon was inside a planet base. One would think this would at the very least slow their plans for galactic domination, but as episode VIII shows that isn't true, as the First Order somehow basically conquers the galaxy, wipes out the rebels, and has ships and troops for days just a few days after losing a planets worth of troops and weapons when they were viewed as a fringe group. Not buying it.
There are some things I genuinely loved about both VII and VIII, many mentioned here but also including the kinda wannabe badass vibe coming from the First Order. Like they knew how to look like the empire, but didn't have the poise or confidence. One of my favorites was that old empire type captain on the dreadnaught in the beginning of VIII and the contrast of him and the inept and emotional General Hux. Unfortunately the bad has overpowered the good in these movies so far and it is a shame.

I think every Star Wars movie is flawed. Every. Single. One. Every movie has its casino-like scene if you think about it (a subplot that doesn't really do anything more than expand something of the universe), but in TLJ we can see that we are driven to discover how the war business is handled. I also think this movie never intended to be the best, but to completely destroy the rigid mold that the movie saga had gotten into (Skywalker, Kenobi, Solo, Organa, Empire, First Order, Republic and Rebellion). It goes further, it has the guts to tell us that we need to end the myths and make way for a new generation.
Yeah, I thought some scenes were dumb, and there is a SERIOUS plot hole (why haven't they used hyperspace ship charges before, if they are SO DESTRUCTIVE and effective?) but this, as part of THE MOVIE CANON is a solid film.

The hyperspace thing I think is just because someone would have to die and sacrifice a large ship to do it. Of course, maybe they could build a metal slug with an engine, but it could still be written off as a waste of resources. I totally agree with you though, people forget that Star Wars is campy. It's never been a deep, though invoking series. They get deep enough to drive the story within their own universe and that's about it. So I think people tend to expect too much from a fun action adventure series

I think being teased by a powerful dark being as a young warrior and thinking your uncle is going to kill are pretty solid reasons to turn into the Dark Side: you lose faith in the Light if it's so weak that LUKE SKYWALKER doubts if killing you is the best answer. Just saying.
Also: Rey is new to the Force, Poe is new to the Rebellion, Kylo is the best villain of Star Wars (I don't mean iconic or cool, but the best in character development and maturity) and they did set up EVERYTHING: the First Order is beheaded from its former leader, the Rebellion is shattered, Rey and Kylo are growing even stronger and Poe has learned not to be a dumbass brave warrior, but to respect leadership in order to win.
I swear to God, if I read "Mary Sue" again referring to Rey I'm gonna explode:
      - She was abandoned and managed to survive in the shithole that is Jakku.
      - She learned to fight with many weapons DURING ALL HER LIFE (something Luke the Farmer never did, he only shot some rats for fun).
      - She HAD to learn how a lot of vehicles and starships work, in order to earn money and survive.
      - She is the polar opposite of Kylo Ren in Force sensitivity, the Force chose her to be the counterpart of Ben Solo and balance the Universe. It's in the narrative. It's in the movie. Pay attention.
      - As long as Kylo gets stronger, so does she. The reason she did'n awaken the Force before was because she was stranded in Jakku. As soon as she gets in contact with Anakin and Luke lightsaber, and later contact with Kylo Ren, the Force BLOOMS in her and ends up flourishing in the first duel.
      - In that duel, Kylo Ren is injured by the weapon of mass destruction that is Chewbacca's gun. With A FUCKING HOLE IN HIS STOMACH, he faces Finn and gets injured. EVEN WITH THAT, he manages to challenge Rey, and she is able to beat him because she is completely fresh and fine.
      - Rey knows how to wield a weapon. Combine that to 2-3 days of training (less than Luke had, to be honest) and you have a fine warrior. Not as fine as Kylo Ren, notice how she takes down 2-3 guards and Kylo takes down 7 or 8. He's a beast with the lightsaber, but both are equal in Force powers.
She is not a f*cking Mary Sue. Luke Skywalker, on the other hand, could be considered a Gary Stu. He was a farmer and suddenly he could destroy the Death Star and face a Sith Lord with barely any training or backstory of a life full of fights, conflict or survival to justify him.
      Come on, man.

What I had problem with. Po in first act disobeyed orders , second acted he questioned his superiors in front of crew. Third act he stages mutiny. I literally was waiting for Leia or some one to shot him for treason. But Leia let him do his thing. Why would people back her against New Order if she can't keep a rouge pilot in line? It shows her as weak leader. In original trilogy she was assertive bad ass. Plus she has force powers to survive vacuum of space. When did she learn that? Why is Luke training Jedi if the power is inherited through your genes? It totally undermined the Jedi order. Rei has all the Jedi powers after 20 minutes of training. So again why even bother having Jedi temple if the real power is in your genes and not your training. Luke was a complete disappointment, in Empire Strikes back he's was the only one who saw good in Darth Vader, The badest villain in movie history. But he was so scared of the darkness in the boy that doesn't want to shot the ship that might hold his mother . So scared he might commit murder. Again totally undermines all of what has been built for past 30 years. Finn and Rose, they have to find the code breaker because he's the best and only he can break the code in the New Orders ship. But then they just happen find code breaker in the cell they are held in. This takes all the drama away. If you can just happen oppon a hacker in random jail that can hack a system, that system isnt that special and is not exciting to watch. Oh I have more, Luke is a middle aged man who been studying the force for almost 40 years and Yoda had to come back from the dead to teach him. I Love Yoda but the characters haven't grown in half a life time? Literally the new order is the Empire with a bigger budget(no explanation on how that happened). Han was a smuggler, Leia leader of rag tag rebels, Luke a Jedi with out a clue. These characters have literally gone backwards in development. Oh by the way Snoke and Fazma are supposed to be some villains. But nothing in film made me care about them. That is just a small list of things wrong with movie. I am not even a huge star wars fan or even a huge movie fan. But seen it today and was actually kinda insulted by the BS story line and lack of basic story. Honestly better stories have been written in Jr. High English class.

I completely agree on Canto Bight, it did feel like a children's TV episode, even in the writing - "Now it was worth it" after releasing the space horse.
Overall I think the good outweighs the bad, and now JJ has a much cleaner starting point to build off of for IX. I think in a way JJ boxed Rian in a bit with the Rey/Luke scene at the end of TFA, essentially forcing the timeline of the next film to be immediately after. With IX a time gap can actually happen to move the characters along their respective paths offscreen.

Thank you so much for making this video! The Last Jedi is my 3rd favorite Star Wars (After TESB and ROTJ). I agree that the Casio scene was poorly played out but honestly I just have to think about how awful JarJar binks was and its all better. I also cut Johnson alot of slack because he didn't make TFA and had to try and answer all the questions set up by the film and also make his own story. They should have kept the same director through the whole trilogy.

Looking back on TLJ, those were my main problems. For me, those issues were enough to bring down the rest of the movies. Also I’ll never forgive thus movie for cutting out Luke mourning Han but keeping in the space milk scene.

Why is it that widespread criticism of Rey indicates that it's just the "popular" thing to hate on? There are numerous legitimate criticisms of her, and very few things to praise her as a character on.

If this were Battlestar Galactica, they would of thrown Poe out the goddamn airlock for making the mistakes that he did. Also, Javik from Mass Effect 3, that Prothean didn't take no backtalk!

This movie was a steaming pile of crap. To many plot holes, to many points of conflict, not just with the original and prequel trilogy, but with The Force Awakens and with itself. It was almost like reverse plagiarism, rather than being a copy of what you might expect, taking everything you expected and wanted and did the exact opposite, and just failed miserably. It was almost as if he was trying to take a post-modernist approach to starwars, but that just doesn't work and fails horribly!

But isn't that what a movie should do to you? Not doing what you expect so that there is a twist and you cant be sure what is going to happen next? I think a trilogy should be at it's lowest at the end of the 2. movie (like it is in episode 5).It is normal to just want the best for a character but if it they actually did it that way the movie would have been just boring (There is a reason why critics love the movie and regular people generally dont ). I dont think the movie was a masterpeace but it did some unexpected stuff and im glad it did it. Just because it doesnt play out exactly how you thought doesnt make it a pile of crap.

This movie had potential. A few tweaks would go a long way to fix some of the weaknesses:
1- Get rid of Rose. Her character doesn't work: too optimist and/or too wise and/or too wordly. It creates false depth to her character and her reactions are too inconsistent
    2. Have the Resistance atempt a second jump to discover the tracking problem.
    3. Have then Leïa uses an exhausting force power to wake up Fin and confirm that the New Order has a new tech that can follow one ship at a time. Leïa goes into coma and Hodo takes command. (no Leïa Poppins - Logical explanation for tracking device discovery)
    4. Have Hodo order the resistance to disperse. The New Order keep following the flagship. Start of a wild chase with the fuel time limit kicking in.
    5. Have Hodo assure she has a plan to shake the pursuit but Poe see only inaction (show his immaturity)
    6. Have Poe and Fin go to the casino and have them infiltrate the prison (not getting caught for stupid reasons) and have one of them give a basic slicing kit to Del Toro through the bars and have Del Toro prove how good he is with limited resources. Have the 3 of them escape under fire but no last minute rescue par BB8.
    7. The deactivation of the tracking device still fails - Fin confronts Phasma but is defeated (not killed) - Poe and Del Toro narrowly escape and return to the flagship. Fin is led to a torture chamber by Phasma.
    8. The First Order finds out that the Resistance does have cloaked small crafts (since that how Fin Poe & Del Toro got in) contrary to what it thought and use a costly (to explain why it didn't use it before) shokwave to reveal the escaping crafts. The shockwave reduce their shield strength and that's why it isn't frequently used.
    9. On the flagship, a lone Hodo chew Poe out, stick him and Del Toro in an escape pod, then use the shield cracking code of Del Toro and the reduced strengh of the Order shield to enact her suicide run.
    10. After the Lightsaber is torn apart, Rey follows her instincts then knocks Phasma by surprise with a Force push and frees Fin.
    11. Kylo kills Hux in the throne room then appoints Phasma as his second in command
    12. In the Kylo-Luke flashback, have the two argue, then an accident make it seems like Luke is attacking Kylo. Kylo then reacts dispropotionately by thinking that Luke want to kill him and destroys the temple.
That should restructure the plot and tie it a lot more logically with the original trilogy

I full wholeheartedly agree in every single point that you made except for the one about Luke being how he is right now...
I don't mind for him to be out of character. He has grown a lot for three decades so things might change along the way...
Luke being a little bit cranky is justifiable, a lot of old people are like that.
Luke cannot stand a fight with Rey is fine too since he is getting weary with age.
And to be honest, most people don't care if he's not portrayed as someone OP.
Moreover, I don't blame him to kill off his only nephew actually, if done correctly though.
The problem I found is that at its core, Luke might resort to extreme killing but only if the situation is out of his robotic hand. Luke striking the wampa was only by self defense and then he flees to safety. Luke going apeshit in ROTJ during the first act is justifiable since he was getting him and his friends away from Jabba. He almost killed Darth Vader (but eventually not) only due to being manipulated by Darth Vader and Palpatine during the fight.
So, you're telling me that for someone who had aged wisely wants to kill Kylo just because "I have a bad feeling about this" is a bit unwarranted. At least show that Luke tried talking Kylo out of the dark side instead of just sensing he's already a lost cause and better off killing him while he's sleeping. The problem most people find this disturbing was that Luke is now shown to not at least strive to give hope to people to revert back to the light side. While this might seemed to attach with the theme of failure in the movie, however a person who fails by trying is better off than someone who just gives up immediately.

Great looking film but nothing is answered. Dont you just hate space nazi's? I can understand why Mark Hamil doesn't like his arc. It's an ok film but not one of the best Star Wars films.

I'm still trying to put my feelings together on this movie. On one hand, I had issues with Poe sort of undergoing a change in character, though strictly speaking he never had that much character in The Force Awakens beyond being a happy go lucky hot shot. The movie ultimately subverting his attempt at 'screw the rules, I'm doing what's right' did salvage things for me, but I have to see the movie again to really gauge if Poe learned his lesson.
The tension meanwhile in the Luke/Rey/Kylo stuff was so thick you could cut it with a knife and was among some of my favorite stuff in the movie. I've seen some people say that Luke was ruined by this movie, but we do have to remember that it's been almost 30 years. People change and it isn't always for the better. When he said that he 'saw a scared boy whose master failed him' that really hit me and you can bet that Luke felt even worse as he tried to save his father from darkness.
In general though, this movie gave me the reaction I was hoping The Force Awakens would in that, aside from being weirded out once or twice, I felt invested and excited the entire time whereas it took me two viewing before I felt like I enjoyed The Force Awakens.

I don't think Johnson's writing was the problem, I think it's what he had to deal with coming off of Abrams just winging it with TFA. They've come out and said that there wasn't a trilogy bible or anything like that and that the directors and writers were pretty much left to do what they wanted (within reason). This means that when Abrams brought up a lot of stuff in TFA (Rey's parents, Luke's lightsaber, etc.) he didn't actually know where it was going. This meant that Johnson had to come up with his own answers to the stuff he didn't write on top of telling the Star Wars story he wanted to tell. I think if he had been left to the whole trilogy, this middle chapter wouldn't feel as busy as it does at times. I think the different director for each film was an interesting idea, but it clearly got messed up when they showed Trevorrow the door. I really hope that the finality of this one allows Abrams to not make the next one feel bloated. I really wish they had gotten someone else for the next one but Abrams is always a safe bet. He knows how to make enjoyable films, just not particularly deep ones.
