    Something I love so much about your channel is that you start with a plan and even when it goes sideways and not how you want you just roll with it and adapt to what’s happening and end up with a different but awesome project. A great attitude for art and life!

    Don't feel like you have to stick with just woodturning, most people will stay regardless. As someone who does the same work I always end up changing what I do and I always come back to woodturning. Seeing different things on your channel is refreshing. I'm a disabled 34 yo that works from home doing this. I live in a small apartment with my wife and two kids so my "shop" is a workbench 5 feet from my bed. That's when you know you have a good wife lol she has no problem with the sawdust ect from the bandsaw and lathe. Keep doing what your doing you've definitely inspired me to try new things from time to time.

    Nick,
    Are the bowls you make out of that resin "food safe?"
    I also have a challenge for you. Make another one....yeah, I know what you said, but listen to me anyway. Fill a mould with the cork, place a wire mesh with gaps that are large but not so large that the corks will come out over the top and adhere it in place with tape or something. Then, using Blue and Yellow for the colors, pour the epoxy in through the gaps in the mould. You will probably still need to do the pour a couple of times because the cork will probably soak up a considerable amount. Would love to see the results of this process, and you are the only one that can make the miracle work!
    Keep up the excellent work!

    Love the way that turned out. I was thinking next time you make a bowl though, You might want to super glue the cork pieces into specific pattern, so that way you can control the look a little bit.
    Also, for a wine connoisseur, a cork cutting board might be an interesting project.
    Or a set of cork in resin coasters.

    • @tehladyjade
      @tehladyjade 4 роки тому +4

      Not sure how well the superglue would do with/to the resin, but I have seen small amounts of resin used to "glue" bits in place & cured before adding addition layer or layers of resin.

      @timcarter1164 4 роки тому

      @@tehladyjade...
      I've seen several makers who use resin and fhey use super glue at the same time. Although a lot of them will use a UV cured resin. They simply put a drop between the two pieces to be glued, hit it with a UV light and it's bonded. But using the correct cyanoacetate glue, it should be no problem.

    On another note I’ve seen peter brown use stabilizing resin to fill in the holes of porous woods. It adds weight so maybe that might help keeping corks from floating so much? I’ve never tried it and it seemed kind of unsuccessful the two times I saw him use it... so take that with a grain of salt.

    • @IamPiccolo1
      @IamPiccolo1 4 роки тому

      I came here to say the same. Peter Brown did something else with cork recently too I'm pretty sure. I think the stablizing resin could help in a cork situation.

    Half way through this I really thought it would have looked more interesting if you'd turned this blank round to have the corks more to the bottom of the bowl.......... But seeing the finished piece, I have to admit that you probably made a better choice.
    Out of interest, did the pressure pot force the resin into the corks much? Or were they still a bit spongy?

    Nick in my personal opinion you are the best content creator on YT! You’re funny, have outside of the box creativity and you can just tell that you genuinely love what you’re doing. Thank you for being here on UA-cam so the rest of us can join you in your workshop!

    Question: why fill it full of cork only to grind out 80% ? Isn’t there something you could have done to cut down on wasting so many? Just curious. It’s a beautiful piece.

      Sashabella1 unless you know what shape you want from the beginning, it’s better to have more and reduce down. It’s a lot harder to add onto it later if you don’t have enough material!
      I wonder this all the time, though. So much seeming waste. At the same time, you can use wood chips as kindling, garden bedding, all kinds of landscaping and decor. I know Nick’s used all the waste in the past to make more stuff so. -shrug-

      @@silivrengamer thorugh by having a smaller bowl to place inside the bigger bowl, means that he can be more resoursce efficient. so like theres maybe 30mm of cork/resin instead of a solid hemisphere
