19:39 I don’t know what’s supposed to happen, but anything shiny makes me happy. So a success in my book! 23:46 oooh! It’s like coral from space! Very pretty!
As a chemist I looked into it. The reaction of gold in Bleach is facilitated by the addition of hydrochloric acid. To perform the reaction by bleach alone you would need to add a bleach solution that is a whopping 86.9% bleach by weight. Household bleach is generally about 5.25% bleach by weight. This means you need to be adding approximately 26.25 mL of bleach per gram of gold in order to facilitate the full reaction. So that thin coating from your brush probably wasn't enough.
I can't speak to how much bleach you'd need for this, but as a former retail jewelry salesperson, I can tell you that even the bleach in *pool water is enough to damage gold jewelry*. Over 2 years I knew 5 instances when we had jewelry come in for repair that it cracked or shattered (once in the store SPECTACULARLY!) 2 were part time swim instructors, one was a life guard, and 2 were or had been waitresses (bleach water to clean the tables). One of the swim instructors was a female version of Mr T and her necklaces were constantly snapping, some of her chains had 4 and 5 fixes but she wasn't about to take them off for even an hour. The others were all rings, including a former waitress who had just came to work in our store and during an in store event was having her engagement ring re-made (her fiancee had proposed with his grandmother's solitaire, the ring itself was too big and she wanted something that didn't stick up so high.) The second the jeweler put heat to it the band popped, 3 different pieces and one of them flew into the air and landed over 6 feet away. Without skipping a beat, with no context or outside information he announced "chlorine."
@@mwater_moon2865 pool water has multiple chemicals added including sulphuric acid and cyanuric acid as well as chlorine. I'm no chemist but I'd guess that some of those other chemicals act to facilitate the reaction in the same way that hydrochloric acid does.
@@andrewmcintyre8636 Yeah any "chemist" that states mixing thing and not states to not do it cause it will cause a reaction and create deadly gas should stop calling themselves a Chemist.
Nick...honestly It was quite satisfying to watch you smooth out gold leaf with a paint brush ...you should do that again...in slow mo...with some nice music on...yeah
Hello I am so sorry if this sounds weirds but you wrote such a nice and wonderful comment on here and I like your comment. I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you I'd love to be friends..?
Was going to say the same thing. Also, you can see he used it “upside down”. Gold foil will have a shiny and a dull side. Gold leaf doesn’t. He put the shiny side down on the test wood.
Yes I think you're probably correct. When ever I've seen people use gold leaf before it so much thinner and delicate that it would just stick to the natural oils on skin.
No that's leaf and not foil, its brass leaf sold as "gold leaf". Foil is a different thing than leaf and is way thicker and will not tear as easily as that did.
Hello I am so sorry if this sounds weirds but you wrote such a nice and wonderful comment on here and I like your comment. I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you I'd love to be friends..
When you started, it was broccoli, then all I could see was tiny faces, but the gilding somehow transformed it into something.... exquisite. Truly. Great job, Nick.
I would assume you would want copper foil instead of gold leaf. As copper tends to be the best metal to change colour. I've used ketchup to add colour to copper sheet, as well as salt and heat, vinegar and other liquids. Foil tends to be a bit thicker than leaf so would also give you more metal to react against. Adding colour to real gold or real silver needs chemicals like liver of sulphur.
I think what is needed is Brass Leaf which is the cheap gold leaf most come by. The copper in the brass gets dissolved leaving the zinc behind. Leaves a weird dark silvery finish after. Cleaning rusted metal parts in vinegar baths, any brass inserts/bearings will do that. You can get copper leaf but it just tends to be on the rare side to find. Most the times it can be sold as "Rose Gold" instead of saying copper leaf.
I think my favorite part of watching you is seeing the process as you figure out what you want and what you plan, and how to fix whatever didn't work to 'plan'. I seriously htink, of all the amazing things you've made, THIS is my favorite! Amazing!
That is glorious wood! What a find! For future reference, the oils from your hands will leave marks on the foil, it oxidizes in the spots where it came in contact with the oils from your skin and they can't be removed. They don't show up immediately, so it can be deceptive. If you're looking for colours produced on metal, ammonia fumes on brass turn blue. Put the metal in a closed pot, and put some ammonia in, not touching the metal. The fumes should turn to the brass blue. It is quite effective in items of married metals, like silver and brass.
Very tasteful, Nick. I think it looks more natural than it did before you did the bleach and stuff. I love how it looks. Thank you for sharing your experiments. Be safe in all you do.
Hi Nick. I love what you do, ur so creative. I use to live in Montana and I would climb about 9,000 ft up the Bitterroot Mountains. There I would collect the wildest burls I could find. I use to do woodworking so I could turn the burl into lamps, desk accessories, etc. The burl you have now is beautiful. I took a similar piece and drilled a hole near the top. Then I would sandblast the piece. After that I would make sure it would hand flat on a wall. I called them wall vases. After blasting I would either just paint it with Tung Oil and let the natural colors pop out or I would use a small torch and burn some areas that seemed receptive. Then I would Tung Oil it. I would put a small bundle of flowers in it. I always sold whatever I made. Just sharing a little fun with you. I'm 75 now so no more high climbs for me but the ideas still run around inside this old brain of mine. Enjoy!
I think it turned out quite nice! I really like it! I know it didn't turn out how you wanted it to, but it's an awesome piece! I love the Burt you used! Great job, Nick! ♥️♥️

Beautiful result. Thanks for another project where we all learn together. Bleach is an oxidizer. Bleach vapor with the air will oxidize metal. Acid will dissolve it. Bleach and acid mixed together will kill you. 😁
