Great idea guys. I have a Delica also, and have just decided to rebuild the set up in the back. Glad I came across your video. I've always wanted to make a Rock and Roll bed. Simple yet effective. Thanks guys.
Good idea, we will plan to travel with the bed down but we’ll put a pin in there next time we have some tools around and then we can travel with it upright!
Thank you! I have been looking for something simple like this that I can do by myself. This is great! I also like I also like the locking pin suggestion from @roberttaylor
Thank you very much for this!! This helps me with the how-to of what I am hoping to do. This is the kind of bed I want, but I don’t want tri-fold, I want a quad-fold so when it is in couch mode you have a couch in both the interior living space and also one facing out the rear hatch to comfortably enjoy the view of your travels. Although I have two vans to build out,… one to sleep two people and one to sleep one, so that mattress may be helpful. If I buy two and cut a 12 inch strip off of each then adhere then together then I have three 24 inch mattresses.
Solid plywood under a mattress in a van is a mold issue. Ventilation under the mattress is critical. Lots of condensation in a van with two people in it.For your health and safety research this topic. Best wishes to you both.
Thanks so much for this suggestion! We were actually planning to put some holes in the plywood, but time got away from us! We plan to do that eventually, so far so good with good ventilation we haven’t had much trouble yet. Certainly beats the sailboat in that regard, much smaller space to keep warm and dry!
As far as having a clear view out the back,…. School buses, city buses, box trucks, cut away vans, semi trucks, pick ups towing travel trailers and fifth wheels, 12 passenger nissan nv3500s, 15 passenger Ford transits, all cargo vans without rear windows,…they all have no visibility out the inside back of their vehicle. Upgrade to tow mirrors (a flat and convex mirror on each side) and learn to use them and you won’t need to worry about it. Also,… invest in a reverse cam ($50 on Amazon) and that will help tremendously with backing.
Hi guys great effort ply is very strong you probably could have eliminated half of the framing with a bit more experience. But you did a great job r&r beds are about $6000 in Australia
We converted a cargo trailer into a camper but we want to do a simple conversion to our E350 van. Thanks for sharing your bed design, as we are looking for ideas.
So nice to see a young couple correctly using tools and being very independent, you are doing a fantastic job and I always found the building and putting it together (especially if you are not using a plan) is so much more rewarding, have a wonderful day. We spend lots of time in our small motorhome boondocking around the costal trails of Newfoundland.
I just bought a Renault Kangoo last week that I want to convert for the coming summer, but I wasnt sure about the bed frame... This video gave me just the Idea about the legs, thx a lot and greetings from italy :)
I have the same build I did out of scraps wood from a old build and a 3 fold tumbling mat I got at the resale shop for $5. Nice job... I have a 08 Chrysler Town and country It comes with a built-in power 150wattt inverter for 110volt and a in the wall rechargeable flashlight and a rear DVD system. I love van camping in it. You can find them for 3k anywhere on the 🇺🇸.
I am not the most complimentary person with my comments, but what a good idea!. Looking at that drawer you put in gave me an idea, why not pull the drawer out and use it as a front support instead of legs? Good job though.....
I’m just wondering if lack of ventilation is going to cause a problem with mold? If you are just using it for short outings I would suggest taking the mattress out of the van when finished. Condensation is a big enemy of mattresses. It’s the warm air of your body and the cool or cold of the surface below it. I have seen people who build their own beds for long term use put holes in the bed frame and also include a moisture barrier such as “Savy Rest bed rug” and “Hyper Vent Air Flow Moisture Barrier.” Don’t know if you can get either of them in your area and you may be able to get away with just removing the mattress if this is for short term but $170 is a lot to lose to mold. Really great bed frame though!!
Отличная идея кровать диван,я сейчас тоже потихоньку делаю Делику.Хорошие вы и дружные желаю вам красивых видов и поездок буду следить.Привет из Санкт-Петербурга.👏👍
Oh to be young enough that a bed that narrow can sleep 2 ❤️😊. I'm on to my 4th conversion now and thinking I'll be using a similar design this time around - but wider. What would you change about it now that you've been on it for a few months? Nice build. A tad over engineered I'd say but better that way than the other.
RASIL Rio de Janeiro. Estou preparando uma Van Asia Towner pequena, e gostei muito do projeto de voçês! Creio que este será o meu projeto final! Muito bom! BRAZIL Rio de Janeiro. I'm preparing a small Asia Towner Van, and I really liked your project! I believe this will be my final project! Very good!
Might want to add a two inches piece in the front of your frame to lift the front a bit so that you can ‘slide” into the SOFA mode of youbed and feel well planted as you sit…you can put a piece on a bender that you can lift up so that you are snug sitting and then take it down when you sleep….i love your simple bed, but that is what i would do…great vid…
Mark has a good tip. Also you can take a tool called a hole saw and put some evenly spaced holes in that ply for ventilation. Just like blue moon you need to prevent condensation. I still believe this will be a beautiful second or third home : ) oh this is also pop's old boats.
I made the same mistake as you..., I used the wheel arch to determin the height of the bed, but when the bed was finished, I could no longer sit up straight coz I forgot about the the thickness of the bed frame with the Mattresse on it !!!
It would have looked so much better if you had matched the Grain on the two drawers? You still can just flip one of those over so that the grain matches and it would be beautiful
So happy I found you! You have given me several ideas for my very first van, which I pick up next month! Thank you for sharing! Safe travels! ~Tracey & Miska! 🤗🐾🐾
That is great, don’t you think it would be safer is the frame was fixed to the floor rather than just glued and also a simple bolt lock to lock in place when it was in the seat position?
Yes I think if we had the foresight it would have been a good idea to throw a bolt into the seat threads, but by the time we did the “test fit” the floor ended up being so tight we could get it out again! And then the rest is history, the grease against the wheel wells has made it surprisingly rigid and it appears very stable even on quite bumpy roads. Let’s just hope we never get into an accident at all, but if we do we think it will be okay.
@@BlueMoonLife IF/WHEN you get a chance drill a couple of holes straight through the item and through the bed of the vehicle and then undercoat everything.
@@BlueMoonLife it’s not to late to put a catch on :) I would also be tempted to just get a few screws from the frame into the floor too just to give it a little more strength than just the glue.
Well, I must say, a well thought out design and build. I just have one major question, "where were you two when I was rebuilding the front of my travel trailer" lol. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the build.
nice work. I enjoyed this! i also have one of those tri-folding mattresses for my truck camping platform. got it off amazon. theyre surprisingly comfy.
I love this. Thanks for doing this. I have one question. The size of the rails. Did you make them the size of one section of frame or a little bigger/smaller? Thanks again
Very cool video, very well thought out design. Why a van with the steering wheel on the right? Does everyone in Victoria drive on the wrong side of the road ?
Everyone thinks that a bed should be about 75" A little longer then you are tall. I don't think so. I would go with a 5" foam mattress but only long enough to go about a few inches below my knees. Then I might consider building some sort of storage box that would be just 1 inch shorter then my bed with that 5" mattress. I really don't think anyone needs cushioning below the knees.
Great idea guys. I have a Delica also, and have just decided to rebuild the set up in the back. Glad I came across your video. I've always wanted to make a Rock and Roll bed. Simple yet effective. Thanks guys.
I’ve watched lots of videos on bed construction -- and yours is one of the easiest to follow -- good job !
Thank you, we’re so happy to hear that :)
Suggest a locking pin to keep the bedbench from sliding. If unit is upright it may unfold during a quick stop or rough road
Good idea, we will plan to travel with the bed down but we’ll put a pin in there next time we have some tools around and then we can travel with it upright!
Thank you! I have been looking for something simple like this that I can do by myself. This is great! I also like I also like the locking pin suggestion from @roberttaylor

Nice design ! Good that you're both skinny ! Two in a twin bed. ✌️💜🎸
No a twin is much better for two as much in love as Jonas and Gillian, far easier to snuggle.
Yes it is just-big enough!

Either drill holes in the plywood to allow air movement & prevent mold OR check out hypervent.
Can you provide a link for where the mattress can be purchased? great video.
Very well done "how-to" video.
I think almost everyone would be able to build their own version from watching you.
Great job both of you!
Thanks so much, we do hope it is helpful!
I definitely learned a lot.

Very nice job on the bed build. And Thanks for showing the details of how it's built, a lot of van builders will borrow your design, I'm sure.
Thanks a lot Jerry, we hope it gives people some ideas!

I can't get over your safety goggles. Those are AWESOME!!
Nice work...I'd have made the bed a tiny bit wider as I reckon it's going to be a very tight squeeze.
i think they will be fine.
Hi you guys I love the idea of this rock and roll bed if it's ok with you I'm going to copy your ideas. Keep up the great work 👍

Super job! I do like this three-fold bed design! G Ire

Amazing! ❤️
I really like your bed design. Could you share the dimensions of the frame??
I want one

Thanks!

Where did you learn your carpentry skills.
We had some enormous help from a great carpenter!
This is going to create mold in your wood and mattress, put thin slits in the ply wood so it's breathable

I’ve never heard of a rock ‘n’ roll bed.
Very cool video, very well thought out design. Why a van with the steering wheel on the right? Does everyone in Victoria drive on the wrong side of the road ?

You have no moisture issues under the mattress? I didn’t see any outlets on it.??
Does it help keep mold at bay if you cut holes in the platform?
Couldn’t find your phone mattress in the description could you link below?
