After watching many such videos, I vote this to be the one best slide-out bed build by far. Thank you!
Thank you that’s really nice of you too say 🤙🤓
Definitely one of the best I've seen as well!
Me too🙂

I agree : the best of the best ! Thank you !!
Mel is one of the best out there. No fancy workshops or DeWalt tools. He inspires every day people who don't have the money to splash out on a £50k van build. A godsend to novice van builders🥰
Thank you that’s really kind of you to say really appreciate your encouragement and support 👍🤓👍
Thanks, Mel, for sharing. I appreciate all the little tips you gave on how to get bed to slide smoothly.
@@lisajanestrawbridge7833 you are absolutely welcome good luck with your project remember to keep it simple keep it safe and you’ll sleep so well nothing will stop you 👍🤓👍
Brilliant. So happy I found this account
Thank you I will post an answer to your other questions later when I’m at my laptop I’ll send you links to the stuff that I used for installing the Bluetti
Ahhhh !! All other videos I watched on the subject are in the trash this is the only one you need great detailed information thanks a bunch!
That’s really kind of you to say thank you and good luck with your build 😊👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld I agree with Janae .. .I built a similar one and had issues with friction when sliding it in and out. will revise the construction now based on your advive. thanks a lot man!
@@kschleyerbach thank you and good luck with your build 👍😊👍
The support beams are exactly what was missing in the other DIY projects I saw on the internet. Well thought. Cleverly solved. Good job!
Thank you and good luck with your project 👍
Yes, this is going to be my design
Best sliding bed
Thank you 👍🤓👍
Simplicity is masterpiece. Thanks, Mel! Insightful and useful. Very much appreciated 👍
Thank you for your encouragement and support really appreciated 👍
This video clarified and simplified my thinking about how to build one of these things. Thank you for your video!
You’re absolutely welcome thank you for your positive feedback really appreciated 😊👍
Genuinely helpful advice. Looking at making a bed to replace one with all the sticking issues you mentioned - good to know how to avoid them!
Love the garage under as well. Simple and effective.
This is seriously good! I was struggling with one part of my pull out bed and your explanation is the best out there. Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to comment that is really kind of good luck with your build 👍😊👍
Thank you, this is perfect and exactly what I have been missing. I love that you discussed the tips, many people miss those. Simple , easy, short tutorial that does not miss a beat. Thx again!
Glad it was helpful!
So, watched the video a few times. Easy to follow and just the right amount of detail in all the right places. About 80% through finishing, though deviated from what was shown a in a few bits. Thanks.
Дуже вміло використано й застосовано , молодець,я для себе таке ліжко теж робитиму
Great slide out and great craftsmanship. I would have placed a piano hinge at the wall end only screwed to the fixed pieces of lumber. That would allow me to open the top to access storage space below. Also, I would have pre drilled the holes in the lumber to avoid cracking.
Mel your an absolute diamond 👍🏻 I'm converting a 8' x 5' x 6' square Tickners cargo trailer and I have followed you on every addition of your build and pinched all of your ideas. It has helped me so much with your straight forward every day English and no nonsense instructions. Cheers buddy keep up the brilliant work. Dave from Chelmsford 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hay Dave that’s really kind of you to take the time to comment and letting me know you have found my videos helped you it make all the hard work worthwhile 👍😊👍
These are EXACTLY the tips that I needed for what I hope to build soon. Thank you so much!!
You are absolutely welcome thank you for taking the time to comment really appreciate it good luck with your build 👍😊👍
Perfect explanation and demonstration. So good that I think that I could actually do as successful a job. Thanks 😊
You are the first person that explains everything in every detail even know I do not understand much English but I wanna thank you for taking your time and Sharing your beautiful job thank you so much man
You are absolutely welcome thank you for your encouragement and support really appreciated 👍🤓👍
Thank you so much for this simple but great tutorial I will deffinitelly use this in my van build!🙏
Thank you and good luck with your build 👍
Great job, mate.
This is the best pull out slat bed video and design I've seen. Simple, light weight, and works great. You have eliminated many of the problems others have had and you show how everything works very clearly.
Thanks and Happy trails.
Best pull out bed vid I've seen. Such clear instructions extra tips and all in a short time. Thank you so much Mel.
You’re absolutely welcome thank you for taking the time to comment good luck with your build 👍🤓👍
This is by far the best slat bed tutorial I have seen (and I have been watching slat bed tutorials for about 15 years (to place in my tiny house for visitors) thank you for sharing and the attention to detail! New subscriber!
Thank you that’s really kind of you 👍😊👍
15 years of slat bed videos and you haven't figured it out yet.. hmm
Thank you so much from this middle aged German gal that only ever built stuff from Ikea and had not bought one screw in her life before. That was a very helpful video and I was actually able to finish my very own pull out bed in just one day, even though it looks a bit more wonky than your fantastic work. ;) Keep being awesome and please say hello to kitty cat from me!
You are absolutely welcome thank you for the positive feedback really appreciated good luck with your build 👍😊👍
FINALLY a vid that shows ‘n’ tells it simply how it should be done!! WOW! Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback that’s great to know my video is helping you good luck with your build 👍🤓👍
Cheers for the video. Used it with minor improvements and it made a beautiful and sturdy bed!
Thank you for letting me know I’m so pleased that it helped you 👍🍻
Best explanation I have seen for a slat bed, simply superb! Thank you.
Equalize height of slats to any existing fixed bed portion.
Groove in the sliding section frame to move more freely on wood rail.
Washer to create clearance on moving slats but not fixed slats.
Flip all slats with smooth edge facing mattress so no snags.
Round out sharp edges of slats.
Chamfer the edges of the moving slat close to wall so they glide on top of the fixed rail support.
Small gap between every slat so they move freely and mattress has good air flow (no mold).
Cut legs of moving side a sliver shorter so they move easily.
Bed must pass Black Cat Inspection Team!
A most delightful video! Loved the Black Cat who looks like my beloved cat Lucifer who passed away a few years ago. And I really liked your detailed explanation. It is the small details that hamper each project. Subscribed.
Now I have to figure out how to make the top slats hinge upwards so I can inspect my water tank below, without removing the bed entirely.
Thank you for taking the time to comment that’s really appreciated
My sincere thanks! I just built the couch bed you described using mostly 2x3 lumber. The chamfering and use of washers in the build was simply genius. I built if for my 16x10 shed that I turned into a bunk house. I decided to make a queen size version that will work very well for sleeping.
Glad I could help!
Nice job. Finally someone built a slat bed properly so that the slats are flush in the closed position
Hi thank you for the positive feedback really appreciated 🤓👍
I have watched so many bed build videos but this one was by far the best and easiest to follow. I used it to build the bed in my own van and it came out really well. Thank you for sharing!
Glad it helped!
Love this simple design Mel, your such a nice character and hope we see you on the road one day!
Thank you that’s really kind of you to say would be nice to get out and about soon 👍😊👍
Brilliant tutorial Mel, I'm sure many viewers will find this very helpful. I had to LOL when you said about putting the camera on the fast forward thinymagigy. Time-lapse :P
Oh time lapse that’s what it’s called lol 😂 thanks for that 👍👍🍻🤙🤓
We did this version of your bed and it's amazing! Thank you so much😊
You're so welcome!
Probably the best design on youtube thanks. I am going to pinch some of your ideas for a bed for our tiny spare room. I am also planning to hinge/pivot the top to get the storage space under the bed.
Thank you that’s really kind of you to say good luck with your build sounds great 👍
I used your methods and it worked out great!! The washers was a great idea to give a small gap. Worked first try. Didn't have to redo anything and it slides out so smooth. Thank you!!
Way hay brilliant thank you for taking the time to let me know I really appreciate it good luck with the rest of your build 👍😊👍
Do those washers go on each of the pull out slats or just the end ones?
@@c3pbo in-between each slat as your building just to add a small gap before you screw it down.
Very nice. About to make a similar bed for my van. Great tips on fitment.
You might consider rubbing the slider boards with a bar of soap. It lubricates the surfaces nicely.
Thank you and good luck with your build great tip thanks 👍🤓👍
Thanks so much we managed to make our own pull out bed by using your method for our Bongo
Glad it helped!👍
One of the most helpful videos about that type of sofa bed.
Thank you...
Thank you that’s really kind of you to say 👍
This is hand down the best tutorial of a pull out bed I've seen!! Thank you for your hard work and contribution to us vanlifers!!
Hi Liz I’m glad you found it useful thank you for your positive feedback that makes all the hard work worthwhile good luck with your build 👍🤓👍
Finally a well built slide out bed video! Im getting ready to build one and Im trying to decide on what size wood I will use for the slats. Can you feel the space between yours? I am currently thinking about using 1x2. Thanks
Thank you really appreciate your positivity as long as you have a thick mattress you can’t feel anything I used an 8 inch and I just ordered an 8 inch memory foam mattress for the van I’m building now 👍🤓👍
This is a bright idea
Thank you that’s really kind of you to say 👍
I had to smile when you said "I love it when a plan comes together." Your video had some great tips and your underside view was worth its weight in gold in helping me understand the whole process. Thanks and cheers!!
You are so welcome thank you for taking the time to comment good luck with your project 👍🤓👍
PS - What do you think of the NEW Toyota Hiace Van ?
Do you mean the Toyota Pro Ace? because unfortunately the Hiace is no longer available for in the UK
@@ALYDAVIDSON1 Not sure of naming but this one - www.toyota.com.au/hiace
l have an 85 Hi Ace 2.5D with almost 500k kms on it.
Converted into Camper Van by the previous owner, l've 'modified' a few things over the last 20 years.
(the solar panel was the best idea so far - 4 years now!)
@@louisjantzen7141 There's alot to like about the new Hiace .. but i bet it won't get 500K .. LOL. Toyota don't build bullet-proof tanks anymore.
Just saw that link, Remus.
WTF is wrong with Toyota (& Lexus)???
They're making 'em uglier & uglier every day, bejaysus.
My pal just bought that new Prius (or whatever), and it looks like a bloated Nissan Juke ffs.
wow...
Your slide-out sofa bed construction is so unique and it slides so smoothly not like others who made it. Thanks for you several woodwork tips as well.
You’re absolutely welcome thank you for the positive feedback really appreciated 👍😊👍
Perfect sliding bed, thanks. I'll be building one for my transit connect in the next couple of days.

Hi Mel, I just wanted to tell you that I have watched this video so many times and your building a kitchen video! They are my ‘go to’s’ with my van build. Thank you so much, I appreciate you!
Hi Maggie thank you that’s very kind of you to take the time to comment I truly appreciate your positivity. Maggie I have changed my kitchen around quite a few times over time and I’d say it’s definitely worth having draws rather than cupboards especially at low levels. Good luck with your build remember keep it simple keep it safe and enjoy the process 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld I’m halfway through my kitchen so I will definitely take your advice on board. I will add a few drawers now thank you!
I used thick pieces of stick on felt instead of washers for the bed I made for my client. It worked a treat but thanks for the tip because if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have thought to put anything in between.
That actually sounds a much better idea thank you and well done bet your customer was really pleased 👍😊👍
great idea about cutting the notch out of the runner !!
Thank you 😊
Glad I watched this today Mel, I'm gonna make one like yours for my van 👍🏻
