How I Made A Wooden Rock And Roll Bed

  • This is how I made a wooden rock and roll bed for my campervan conversion. This DIY van bed is made from wood and is very light and easy to use. Rock n Roll beds for van come in a few different styles most have a heavy steel frame but this campervan bed build shows you how to make one yourself from wood.

    Finally, a video that actually explains how to do the thing.

      Hi, I too watch a lot of youtube videos that miss out the most important parts of the explanation. My quest is to remedy that. Thanks for watching.

    THAT’s exactly what I want! …but with the hinges folding both ways, in order for the bed to become a sofa looking inside of the van, as well as outside of the van to enjoy the view when the back doors are open…

    super! This thing has a real everyday usage as bed for guests.
    We don`t have much space. Building something just to use it a couple of times during vacation and tell your wife it`s so super and you`ll use it so often and in the end... we know such stories... 😆.
    But I really like such version, super! I want to make kind of a camping box with such a bed to be used as a "real" bed as well.

    I recent saw a video about Kreg pocket hole Joinery do's & donts I one of the important things was if you see part of the small Pilot hole once you have drilled the pockets It basically means you haven't adjusted the depth collar on the drill bit properly. Something I hadn't necessarily realised even though I am fairly familiar with pocket holes! ... Very clear & informative video though!.... Thanks!.... Marcus...

    Nice video!
    2 Suggestions, if you don't mind!
    1st I think it should be better for the overall comfort if you put your slats left to right instead of front to back of the vehicle.
    2nd I think you should simply put Ikea slat bed base instead of making it!
    I hope you to make and sold as many as you want!
    Have a nice day!

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson  6 місяців тому

      Hi Thanks for watching. Yes the slats could go left to right or either way, once the foam cushions are on either would do. Also I looked into the ikea bed slats but the wood was a bit thin to screw to the main frame.

    The best van bed for a small van! I'm considering to adapt this project to my Dacia Dokker, and to do a camper conversion based on Eric Enjoys Earth main concepts. I think your bed is better, but Eric concepts are very accurate on van living. So I think this project complements perfectly with that. The only thing I would change is the height of the back panel, which I preffer to be taller, to allow rest my head on it (just as my living couch). Consequently, I will go with a less deep sit panel, to complete an 180 cm bed (Dokker is shorter than Vivaro, but so do I, so this is not a problem). I would love to buy one from you but I'm on Argentina. I guess it'll be worth to try to make one on my own.

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson  8 місяців тому

      Hi, Thanks a lot, I have made a few amendments to the design since I made this video. The seat panel is now smaller 60cm and when the foam is on it brings the seat back up too to about 60cm. Good luck if you try to build one and I hope the video helps.

    What a great build. And it had to be, because you drew up such a nice plan beforehand. This is exactly the kind of bed I'd like to build. Just one question - I know you had to make the frame narrower on the lefthand side so it could clear the wheel arch. Did you make the other side the same for symmetry? Because if you'd extended the base and legs further towards your cabinet with less overhang of the bed surface, you could have freed up a lot more storage underneath.

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson  Рік тому +1

      Hi, Thanks a lot. I put the base of the bed in the centre for symmetry, I think it looks more balanced in the van. But the space between the bed base and the cabinets is good for storing longer items, folding chairs etc. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Sandra, Glad you are enjoying the videos. I do make the beds for sale but I can only do "local pick up" as a couple I have sent by courier have arrived damaged. The postage was £35.00 so if you are in traveling distance of NE33 let me know and I will be able to make a bed to fit the SWB trafic. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Dave - thanks for sharing this. I love the design and have built one for a smaller van - I’ve a 19mm floor thats stuck down already so I,m wondering how you finally fixed it to the floor? I cant come up through the underside of van with long bolts etc, I,m thinking 6 M6 coach bots through the frame into the 19mm floor should be ok but wonder if that’s strong enough?

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson  Місяць тому

      I think that would be more than strong enough....I usually screw the frame to the floor and that seems to be good.

    Hi Dave, great informative video. I have only just come across your channel having just bought an ex AA VW T32 and looking for a r+r bed solution. I love this for the lightness and simplicity but I need to use the bed as the rear passenger seats also whilst travelling. How would you suggest I accommodate the necessary seat belts and bolt / screw it to the floor . Is there a way to secure it other than drilling through the van floor? I do not wish to compromise the preservation of the floor. If I could see a way to get over these problems I may have a go myself , or I could be your first r+r bed customer. Thanks. Great vid, I shall be looking at your other ones .

      @dave-watson  Рік тому

      Hi Chris, Glad you liked the video. I've put a couple of these in vans and I usually just screw them into the wooden floor of the van. But they are not really suitable for carrying passengers as they have not been crash tested, that's why I did not put belts on. Also if it did have belts on it would become part of the MOT check for the van and with it not being tested I assume it would not pass. Thanks for watching and good luck with your own conversion.

    Dave that is brilliant and exactly what I’m after. I also think you can put a draw u der it for clothes. I have no skills what do ever and I’m inspired to give that a go. Do you provide plans that I can Jerry rig to my van and I’m happy to pay. Happy to buy one from you absolutely, but I’m in Australia. So could you do it as a kit? To minimise costs

      Hi, I did try sending a couple with a courier but they arrived damaged and it would cost a fortune to send one to Australia. I don't have plans in PDF form but you could take a screenshot of the plans on the video. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Dave, Great video. Just wondering if you have the dimensions for a full size double bed. I presume the length would be very similar just the width being different as the mattress would be 135cm wide? Thanks again for a really informative and detailed video.

      hanks a lot, The runners I am using now are 750mm and extend to 1500mm, I've tried a few different sizes but the 750s work best.

    It's also going to need some small wheels under legs. Will ruin floor covering very soon sliding over it without it.

      I have put felt pads on the sliding feet, as I thought wheels might leave a groove on the floor over time. But as I say I will also show this in my Rock and Roll bed update video....coming soon. Thanks for watching

    Really like the design concept but I've been struggling to transfer this to my medium sized van - Expert/Dispatch/Proace size which really only have a workable floor space of around 213cm x 126cm roughly. For this length the bed frame would always be restricting the side door entrance I'd have to step over and with utility units on opposite side, I'd have to step outside van each time to fully extend bed. Not ideal in bad weather. I can only think of some kind of an extension ?

      Hi, Yes I used the 750mm ones after making a couple with the 800s. But I had to alter the length of the seat section so the bed would still fold out properly.

After needing 4 of us to remove our original rock and roll bed including 2 strong younger generations lol, we realise why we are struggling. We are in age group 65-70 years old and determined to hang on to our old van. Any help or information would be much appreciated, cheers 🍻

      Hi, The mattress is in three separate pieces and they are not fixed to the frame so I can take the middle one out to access the pull strap. I measured each of the boards and ordered the foam to fit. Thanks for watching.

    Friend of mine has asked me to help convert his transit custom into a family camper/day van. This rock n' roll bed will be ideal for what he has in mind. I'll have to make it as a 'full width' and the base frame will need to be taller to accommodate the 'downstairs' beds for the little 'uns, but there's no reason it can't be adpted to suit...maybe a couple of additional braces/crossmembers to account for the extra height. Thanks for sharing your project and explaining the process in such an east-to-understand format.
