Understanding the Granby series is so important in wrestling and combat sports in general. I can remember my high school wrestling coach telling the story of how he flew off of his motorcycle, and the Granby instinct kicked in. He tucked and rolled which likely saved his life. I still practice it regularly for BJJ. Rolling out of bottom position. Rolling from standing to escape. Rolling out of takedown situations. Rolling to initiate scrambles with confidence. Rolling out of desperation to create opportunities. Just roll!

for the bjj guys who are wondering when they could realistically use this, check out Brian's video on a body triangle escape using a granby.

I didn't get that comment cos I've used the Granby roll so many times in bjj to escape stuff. I find pure bjj players don't expect it

The granby roll works well in bjj especially in turtle guard. You might have or not seen it yet but its exactly how you explained friend - forward and backward. That way of granby works perfectly in bjj despite being a wrestling maneuver originally. This is a life saver in bjj turtle guard and intertwine perfectly.

Any chance you could do a claw ride series or leg in series. Also maybe a series on tilts? Wanted to get into these set ups for my wrestlers.

It's a cool move, but from both referee's and off the return I personally feel like a switch is the better option (11:53).
Also, Best grappling channel on UA-cam. Could we get a video on wrestling leg lace variations and how it can apply to BJJ?

9:40 I see you have locked hands similar to freestyle or mma. does the granby roll effectively break the lock as when I try and granby from locked hands in turtle its a lot harder. also what do you think about transitioning from the granby into more of a forward roll keeping a inside hook on the leg while maintaining wrist control to push him down to the mat with your leg on his shoulder to ttack a kneebar or shelf his leg up on the hamstring to strike or take the back

    • @R2Rj204

Cee/ \Gee I think turtle would be harder as you’re not upright with room to give and gain momentum

Was it an attempted granby roll by Demetrius Johnson seen starting at 2:07 of the video "Henry Cejudo vs Demetrious Johnson 2 (HIGHLIGHTS)" on youtube?

What are the best moves to get out of turtle if you don't recommend the granby roll. All though it seems like a lot of grapplers are now using the granby.

Adam Kadmon It comes from the name of the high school that popularized the technique, I believe.

You will be using this in BJJ all the time, it's as crucial to BJJ as it is to wrestling! Having a good granby roll is now a necessity and its one of the things that has deviated away from the original Gracie approach.
