- I paid a visit to the popular Instagrammer Derek Barrett at his workshop in Buckinghamshire to collect a board lifter he was selling. While I was there he showed me round the workshop and told me lots of educational things about panelsaws, edgebanders, fitted furniture construction techniques and much more - so much in fact that I had to split it into 2 videos!

Interesting video. You should consider on your paid subscription to go around visiting more people who do bespoke furniture. There's so many different techniques people use that information is priceless I'm sure people would like to see more ways to save them time and make more money.
james crossley there will be more content like this coming up in 2020, in fact I already have another 2 in the pipeline... look out for updates! 👍
Can’t wait for the second instalment. I can hear the cogs in your brain whirring round as the ideas coming from Derek sink in. This is a guy who is determined to make work as easy as he can for maximum productivity without crippling himself in the process. You can only sell your time once and he makes sure he gets the maximum return from himself. Great vid and thanks for sharing, I could listen to you two all day long. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I used to have a Worksop with large heavy machines. It’s a different ballgame, need staff, plenty of work and never get any peace chasing work to make it all pay. Albeit, we done a lot of bespoke joinery for banks, shops and schools. Needed a lot of specialist tooling as well, so I see the wisdom in not doing all kinds of woodwork. Fitted furniture was always reasonably well paid. This video excites me at the same token gives me the colli wobbles. It all revolves around one or two people, accident or illness and it all slows down. Getting rid of big machines wasn’t that easy neither, never got a good resell price usually. Enjoyed this video immensely.
Derek is not messin around, fair play lads, very informative .
Great video. What helpful chat Derek is.
Derek is a great guy! Good video and really cool too see his workshop.
Love this video seeing fellow crafts mens workshops and hearing ideas .looking forward to 2nd video.
Lots of good stuff in here. Very impressed with the care Derek displayed while loading your new lifter into the back of your van. Cheers and thanks, David.
Would be interested in a video with you showing in more detail about your scribing method v’s Derek’s. I could grasp Derek’s explanation but a visual would assist greatly.
Crypto Junkie fair comment it did take some concentration to grasp what he was saying without seeing it done
its tricky without an actual properwardrobe to show it on. keep up the good work
Freebird Interiors, I didn’t understand this explanation, maybe it will be obvious once I’ve received my ‘U’ Scribe jigs and played with them.
Thank and good work I have learnt that you don't need every tool or equipment to do the, I saw you have many power tools to simplify the work every thing is focused on simplicity amazing shop have seen second video too.
Great to see different methods of carrying out the everyday jobs we all do, might just try some of these
Using the biscuit to run a dado! Brilliant.
Derek is great at finding the simple easy tricks to increase productivity!
Happy new year!! Love the video, great chat and explanation of tools of techniques looking forward to seeing the next one!!
Great to see other makers Ideas Alastair, thank you. I’ve just ordered a set of ‘U’ Scribe jigs, after seeing them Being used by yourself, Peter Millard and hearing Derek talking about them as well.
Good video. To say that guy wasn't keen to be on camera, once he started rattling on, there was no stopping him!
what do you expect - he is Irish , but aside from that , he is a modern day craftsman who makes what his customer wants, excellent video , would love to see more of this. Here in Holland there are quite a few shops that use baby forklifts to do what he does ie; from the stack to the format saw . Karl
Great video. Really nice to see the behind the scenes, so to speak, of Dereks workshop. Im godsmacked to hear, his scribing methods are pretty much the same as mine, i thought i had come up with that idea lol the only difference is the biscuit part. The location blocks are the same. Amazing! I feel like a pro now 😂😂😂🤦♂️ thanks for sharing as always, Alaister. Really appreciate it
Chris Moxon it’s nice when that happens - not unusual for thoughtful people in the same trade to arrive at the same methods!
Great video, very interesting hearing you bounce off each other 👍🏽
Hi Alistair happy new year. Great vid to start the year. I'd pay Derek to pick his brains for a few hours and see his set up. Had glimpses on insta but I walkthrough like this is great. What a nice guy really talented. I still wonder how he manages to get through so much work practically alone !! Looking forward to part 2. Cheers Ben
Ben Cartwright_joinery I am still wondering too, he is a very productive guy!!
Fantastic Video.
Best of luck in 2020
Dave
Big up oav edge banders and Markfield Woodworking machinery
The only thing I would say, as somebody who operated forklifts for a living is watch the centre of gravity with those fork extenders on, it will drastically shift it, and lower the lifting capacity, but they are well with the investment of your lifting deep items over and over
You’ll be wanting an electric lift now! 😂
Heriot Handyman I want it all 😂
Hi Alistair.
Nice interesting video to start the new year 👍. I'm always interested in other people's views and methods related to our trade . And it helps us decide how to invest moving forwards .
Great content love seeing people's set up.once you get the Irish talking is hard to shut em up . Enjoy that

Awww, look at the cute little manual walkie stacker, such a shame he replaced it with a BT one, let’s hope he gets better service form Toyota than I do 😅
Daniel Coates that thing is now in my workshop and finally got used last week after long delay getting the new workshop! I got a Toyota guy our to look at renovating some old BT lifters still on the site from previous tenant but they were past it. You haven’t had good experience with them then?
It could be the fact I work for a large green supermarket, we might have a cheap service contract, based on volume, we don’t pay for repairs etc...
But to put it another way, we had two Jungheinrich PPTs for 11 years, then switched to BT Levio for the last 5 years, and have had Toyota our more in the last 5 years, than the entire time we had Jungheinrich.
However that being said, the orange supermarket has the same, but with the upgraded wheels and they don’t need call outs as often, the same with the orange diy chain.
As a general rule Toyota/BT/Raymond are pretty good units, but you must ensure you get the correct unit for the job, I think that’s our downside.
Personally if I was choosing, I would prefer Jungheinrich, it would be like the difference between Matika and Festool in the opinions of the ‘forklift community’
Oh, and to give you ideas of usage, one of them just hit 4k hours usage, and we have three of them.
Daniel Coates this is interesting trading because it’s a set of brands (and a type of equipment) that I was oblivious to recently, but I’m now realising I will probably need one before long!
What weight do these lift? Never considered them but if the lifted a bale of 18mm they would be well worth the investment.
sean duffy the manual lifter I bought off Derek can lift about a tonne. That could be a stack of 20 to 30 sheets of MDF.
@@Alastair_Freebird super idea for lifting sheets to saw height. Looking foorrward to the the video on th workshop move.
👍
