I still remember this viral bus 190 video was 11 years ago, when SMRT had not introduce DDs. DDs was introduced in SMRT since 2014 to ease bus 190 demand, as well as the introduction of bus 972. Today, bus 190 has over 40 DDs, and the demand is not overwhelming due to Downtown Line and bus 972 implementations. Thank you so much LTA for improving all the transportation services in SG!
Coming back to this video nowadays is so interesting, since 190 still has more intense frequencies and downroutes than most buses, even though DTL2 has absorbed a good chunk of its ridership. Haven't gotten the chance to check out 190 on a Friday Night though so story might be different, given that DTL is also a 3-car. But DTL and 972 seems to have made things better for 190, and it's pretty cool what just one video can do
Some people hv very poor vocabulary. Anything that their feeble minds is unable to grasp or understand becomes a 4-letter word or 3-letter expletive. Why the need to add unnecessary and idiotic adjectives ? If they want to say "Don't blame" why add f******* ?
This video popped up on my feed again after 10 years. I recall watching this when I was about 9, worrying about what my commute life would be like when come the time I have to fly back to SG to serve NS. Evenings on 190 aren't as outrageous anymore, thanks to 972 and DTL. Times have changed.
The bigger problem here is how the commuters don’t move in not the bus drivers. The passengers can obviously see there’s a lot more space at the back of the bus but it’s more difficult for the bus driver to do so. They shouldn’t move in only when the bus drivers tell them to. They have eyes and ears to see and hear people trying to board! Even when bus drivers tell them to move in, they’ll usually only move in 1 or 2 steps 😒 If they were actually considerate, this situation wouldn’t be as bad.
Actually, among 190 commuters, we know that the bus stop opp far east just outside thong teck building is suicidal. it has been happening for years! SMRT finally moved their butts, but ppl have been complaining more than 6 yrs over this issue and nothing was done until this video came out, can u believe it!
I just wanted to say Rear doors are not supposed to let ppl to get on the bus, only allow for passengers to get off, only idiots and kiasu ppl want to get in bus from that rear door when passengers are getting off. I don't see the driver did anything wrong, even there are still some space, doesn't mean have to let more ppl get on until full, it is not safe for some security reasons. He has the right not to stop if no passengers are getting off at the stop.
that's how i feel that's why i wanna move out frm sg other people from other country gets good pay and gets all the attentions and we get nothing back in returned.
It has been 10 years since this video was uploaded, and now ironically the DTL (that opened to resolve the issues depicted here) is facing the same issues, and needs 190 and 972 to offload demand to prevent going past 100% crowding
A BIG THANK YOU from all of us in CCK to our savior who uploaded this video. I've been living in CCK for almost 16 years. BUS 190 has always been crowded both ways. Im sure from the scanning system that we have now that is called EZLINK, theres a way to tabulate the capacity of commuters on a daily basis. And im very sure that someone is aware that its always crowded. But trust me guys, the transport system in CCK sucks big time.
i believe out of the 13 bus drivers at least 7 are foreign talents, usually local drivers will ask passengers to move to the rear.thanks for showing me who to vote for next time.
It's either smrt add another bus from CCk to the city, or create buses like 190A which stops at alternative stops throughout the whole journey. It not only solves the problem of packed buses, it also helps smrt cut costs. This can be implemented during the peak hours only.
Kudos to you for taking the initiative to bring this problem to the fore. I don't take this bus but I do take the bus to go to work. So I know how frustrating it can be sometimes. Owl011075 obviously don't find this to be a problem but I believe many regular passengers of bus 190 share your frustration and appreciate you taking the steps that you have taken. Good job and I hope the issue will be resolve soon.
To commenters saying that the MRT is there, please realise that the ride to choa chu kang alone is an hour's journey on train. What about the people who live bukit panjang ? LRT ride from choa chu kang to Fajar is 28minutes. 1hour 40minutes of train ride or 50 minutes bus ride(considering the jam in PIE) ?
Experienced this many times on 190 so I totally understand the frustration. While I agree that bus drivers can help by prompting people to move in (not referring to buses which are too crowded), personally, I am more frustrated with those on the bus. Why do we need to be prompted before we move in? I am sure all of us on bus 190 went through this once so why cant we be more considerate? A small step taken by everyone could have made someone's day better & that someone could be you in the future!
Also, consider those who are disabled, the elderly and those with children. Switching buses or MRT stations can be an inconvenience for these ppl. With a direct bus to their homes (most commuters at this bus stop live in CCK and Bukit Panjang), it's a regular choice they make. Can you imagine how much an agony this is for them to go through daily?
1. On every bus when people tap in or out, the total number of persons on the bus is known in real time. If we know the type and therefore capacity of the bus we can know how often it is packed. 2. The EZ-link device on board can be programmed to send a signal to a control each time the bus is say 80% full. 3. A sample of the more crowded bus routes can be tested. An algorithm can be developed to be predictive, so that more buses can be deployed along those routes.
Also people refuses to go to back to bus, it very frustrating either off work or going to work. I remember I wait a similar crowded bus but I wait for hours to end until I end up taking another transport. We need more buses man!
Those who suggest alternative transport is as good as saying: - Can't take bus > take MRT - MRT crowded with breakdowns > take taxi - taxi expensive > ride bicycle - SG too crowded and bicycle journey so long > move to JB At least my video has finally made SMRT to look at their rotten services after all these yrs and do something, not your opinions -
We did. It's just not seen in video since I have to pause the filming each time I tried to queue or squeeze in. Bear in mind u are witnessing 7.50 mins of a 1hr40min experience, and thru a small phone screen, so u obviously can't see the full situation behind it.
Gosh, totally understand the pain of taking 190. It only seems possible if you board the bus anywhere before 313 somerset, afterwhich, it's always crowded as hell. That is why I now resign my fate to taking the train which last 45 minutes to an hour each trip just to go to school.
I think you will sing a different tune when you have to wait 1hr 40 mins to get on the bus. I read the papers this morning and was shocked that SMRT is aware of the overcrowding situation but yet is still in "monitoring" mode. It really looks like they are lost for a solution and is no longer in control of the situation.
I used to do this also before in some crowded buses, the driver will ask you to tap in front, exit, and enter again from the back door because the people in the middle usually dont want to move further in
this is actually the first time i have heard that 190 is so packed that people have to wait 13 buses before being able to board them. I have taken them at night before. But i guess I boarded it in the earlier stops. So I didn't have any issues with that.
(2)and even more will get on the bus at somerset. Since i work at orchard road, i take the bus from the stop right behind ION and during peak hours it will take atleast 3 buses before i can board, or i will just entirely give up and take the longer-route 700 instead.
The purpose of the video is to show how inconvenient it is to take the bus of your choice. Bus 190 has long been a problematic, crowded bus and it's time this has to be addressed.
The people who try and force themselves into the bus from the rear and manually try to pry the doors open should be fined. I mean, if you manual pry the doors they can break the mechanism, and if they enter from the rear, got almost no chance that they will actually tap in/out what
They need a replica of bus 190. Also, buses like 38 and 48 are extremely popular, but if you don't get on at the first few stops there's literally no space left because they are all single decker buses, even though I'm sure double-deck buses can be deployed
2 years late to the party but to my knowledge 38 only has SDs just bc of lower(?) ridership and high duplication, since all its roads have DDs plying it too it's not a height restriction thing @@calvinkulit
what SMRT can do is to get regular updates from all their bus drivers with regards to how crowded the buses can get on certain routes. their drivers will know best what they have to go through on a daily basis.
I'm sure many passengers of bus 190 appreciate the uploader for making a big hoo-haa here. People were boarding the bus from the back door. You know where else people enter buses from back doors ? Countries where the transportation systems are so bad that people have to climb in, hop on, jump into in however, whatever they can. Service 190 definitely can be improved. There's nothing wrong with pinpointing an obvious problem.
You know, if you are familiar with the bus route, it is possible to walk further up and board the bus at an earlier point of the route. I used to do that before I had my knee problems. The only drawback is having to spend more money on the fare journey, but you are in a hurry, I think that extra money is worth spending.
Aiyoh previous bus stop is behind ION there leh... some ppl just want to go home and rest, not walk endlessly some more. FYI this was also the same bus stop that was overflowing to the brim the first time the MRT broke down around 2012...
This problem is not mainly because the inconsiderate people or the lack of buses, it is the overcrowding in Singapore. Even if you take the MRT, it will still be packed. Everywhere, it will be packed at peak hours. There's a reason why they named it peak hours right? Although I live in the East, I also experience this problem with other bus service no. I feel you Galaxnite.
I may live in the East, but you have my sympathies. If it is not overcrowded buses with inconsiderate people who refuse to move, it is the frequencies that are rarely accurate.
I do feel your frustration cuz I had to squeeze up the bus to school last time. And the bus is far more packed than bus 190 but the bus driver allowed us to do so. But it was really dangerous as it was probably 3x more than the max weight allowed on the bus. What's worse is teachers do not take "unable to squeeze up bus" as an excuse and they just ask you to "leave your house one hour earlier". Of course that can be done but there are no buses at 5am LOL.
2 Gens 3 Buses - Raymond Believe me, you wouldn't... Temperatures here during the winter can get as cold as -30°C or even less. Luckily, cars here are more affordable, so I don't really need to take the bus that much.
I'm Italian and I think IT'S RIDICOLOUS!! In my city buses have normally 3 doors... the 1st is an entrance, the 2nd is an exit and the 3rd is not used... when buses are overcrowed the drivers use the 3rd doors and they become another entrances...
*i m not saying there isnt a problem.. And yes it's good tht the uploader has brought this up.. I m saying that if the problem persists.. There are other alternatives.. And mind you i have had my fair share of not being able to board buses bcos its too crowded.. :)
I think the best part of ur video is being able to proof dat all these desperate ppl who tried to board the bus thru the back exit deserve it. And they still wanna take pic to complain? Damn ugly sight.
Not easily. I would have to elbow my way. Anyone who has filmed with a smartphone typically do not calibrate their smartphone lens to the exact focal point of their eyes, so perspective distortion does occur where by the distances between objects appear bigger than in real life (that's why ppl like u think I did not bother to queue or go up the bus), not forgetting the free moving angle of my arm that was holding the phone. Also, I had to pause filming every time i tried to board the bus.
2. Allowing people to board from the back of the bus poses more than one problem. Firstly there is the safety precaution that has to be made whereby passengers alight and board the bus at the same time. Imagine the situation just like on the mrt platforms whereby some commuters are unable to alight the train just because others are pushing their way in. Now bring that situation onto the busy roads where cars and motors are driving pass.
For old buses: It can only be opened with the emergency switch from the inside. new buses: inside or outside also can. SMRT's buses are easier to get into with emergency switches
Whats the different with double deck bus and this long one ? Isnt it just the same? The double decker one taller but this one is longer. So techinically it wont make a different. Somemore double deck bus cannot stand on the second deck.
No bus driver would deliberately allow passengers to board from the back door. He opened the back door to allow exiting passengers to leave first obviously to create space before opening the front door. In his opinion, at that time, that makes sense. Unfortunately, some people tired of waiting simply decided to board the bus from the back door. It's not his fault ; then again to blame the passengers is also equally problematic.
I must add that the bus feeder service (302) near my house wasn't very good in the past month, esp in the early morning and more so when it is raining. but in the recent months, there will always be a young SMRT chap, coming early to the bus stop near my house, packing people up the buses, just like how it is in the MRT. And it has been a much smoother ride. Maybe a deployment of such packers to the problematic bus stops could help ease the problem.
My point here is, the bus captain should not allow ppl to board from the backdoor. Of course, the backdoor must open to allow passengers to alight, but ppl are complaining about the bus drivers who close the door denying them from boarding from the backdoor, get my point?
And this is why I take another bus (700/171) back to BP/CCK. Either wait for it, take MRT, cab or drive. And the gahmen still dare to increase to 6+million people.
This isn't something unique to CCK but something unique to people living in areas served by SMRT. In places served by SBS transit, ( a company which has experience in running transport services in other countries, the service can never be this bad). With SMRT who belong to the govt, it can do whatever it wants as there is no public tendering system in Singapore and no competition so SMRT doesn't have to do its best. Check out Woodlands Interchange. It looks like a war shelter everyday
It poses a far more critical safety issue than anyone can imagine. It is possible, but it would take years for people to learn to let passengers alight first before boarding, just like in the mrt. Secondly, there are some people who will most definitely not tap their card to pay for the bus fare because there is no bus conductor present. I have seen in happen even when passengers board from the front and they seize the opportunity to do so when there are many people boarding the bus.
i think it is bad that SMRT only takes action after this video became viral. as a regular public transport user myself, i am very sure that bus service 190 is not a unique case.
Simple. He was recording an ongoing problem for many passengers of service 190. As shown in the video, bus after bus was crowded. Some didn't even bother to stop. I think if he tried to board one of the buses and really squeeze, he didn't have to wait until the 14th bus. But how does that solve the problem later ? I take it you dont take bus 190. So therefore you don't have his frustration. So what's your problem with him trying to do something about this issue ?
Sometimes both drivers and already onboard passengers are at fault, the passengers should move, and the drivers should encourage them to move, and maybe smrt could create a feedback form, and they can supply more buses at a certain time, or just supply more buses overall, they can also supply more double deck buses too
Bus stopping when its already fully loaded is no use. It will just cause the existing to be even longer. Bus driver calling the passengers to move back is also a waste of time at every stop, esp when bus is already almost full anyway. A 1 hour journey time can be increased to 2 hrs easily with all the stopping and shouting.

Service number 972.

They (SMRT) should have purchased double deckers a LONG TIME AGO to deploy on 190 to cope with all the load :(
Bro. i believe the articulated bus capacity is more than double decker. Cuz u can't have that much people on the 2nd deck.
@@crapsai oso u can stand lmao

Lol, an articulated double decker bus actually existed.
In Canada, the bus driver and passengers will actually shout "Back of the bus!" so the people will move and give more room.
really. It would be cool to see it in action here at SG
FlameKiller Yeah, the driver should say something if he/she really wants the people to give move room and move to the back.
true
+FastCarsNoRules220 I took a bus before and the driver say "MOVE BACK!" all moved back
Cevertron Video ProductionsTM That bus driver was doing his job then.
its just really incredible to see how, no matter young or old, as you can see in this video, impatient people can be.
I just wanted to say

Totally agreed. Singaporeans are too kiasu.
There are instances where people are allowed to get on from the rear door. The rear card reader will change to allow for entry scanning
Squall0833 Exactly!!!
I agree you aren't supposed to enter from the back door those ppl who say the driver nvr open door are being so selfish
but more space

Omg the comment section sounds really uneducated. I'm so embarrassed for you guys man.
You hit the spot! And SMRT still want to monopolise these profitable routes.
SBST still has most of the profitable routes though. Now 851 also theirs.
Heard that double deck buses will be deployed by smrt somewhere end of this yr. Hope that will ease the current situation.

No public transport in the world is perfect, I am from Bogotá, Colombia and something similar is lived.
At least you guys don't have snow there :P Here in Canada, if that ever happens during the winter, I'd be freezing my a** off.
I would rather freeze my ass off than waiting for an bus
2 Gens 3 Buses - Raymond Believe me, you wouldn't... Temperatures here during the winter can get as cold as -30°C or even less. Luckily, cars here are more affordable, so I don't really need to take the bus that much.
If cars were affordable in sg than it would be exactly like that: the bus being sg and the people being the cars
i wpuld not wait for 14 trains. i will walk
+No Username that train sure looks a hell lot like a bus
The Ministry of Transport needs to address this!!
:( I feel you. I think my sanity minus 100% lo if i were you. More than 1hr leh!!
this is actually good news bcos the more crowded lta would put bendy
I'm Italian and I think IT'S RIDICOLOUS!! In my city buses have normally 3 doors... the 1st is an entrance, the 2nd is an exit and the 3rd is not used... when buses are overcrowed the drivers use the 3rd doors and they become another entrances...
We are already in the making of a 3 door bus that is not currently in service yet but they have already reviewed it... you can search it on UA-cam
OMG! Those are the most crowded buses I've ever seen!
I think it's about time they get bi-articulated buses :P
Haha yea
It would still be overcrowded
We in Estonia have bi-articulated trolleybuses, if Solaris makes one more model for SG, then... i think they open trolleybus svc 190...:P
And this how bendy buses were eliminated
I remembered many years ago where there were competitions, bus drivers used to tell passengers to move in to make room.
I understand your frustrations and exasperations...maybe they should staggered the buses or start some of the service at downstream during peak hours.
Too bad they remove all the mercedes O405.Wonder how they support this service.Tip:Bendy carry more than double deckers.
and don't forget the bus wasn't full yet still empty.
I thought i was here to watch the lady in the dress. 🤣
If the driver dont want to open the door, just pull the emergency door unlocking
For old buses: It can only be opened with the emergency switch from the inside. new buses: inside or outside also can. SMRT's buses are easier to get into with emergency switches
Since there are Enviro 500s and MAN A24 nowadays, i don't think it would be that packed.
Whats the different with double deck bus and this long one ? Isnt it just the same? The double decker one taller but this one is longer. So techinically it wont make a different. Somemore double deck bus cannot stand on the second deck.
I couldn't agree more.
Old video, now with 972, more buses and the DTL, scenes like this is well, rare.
972 happened as a result of this video
Galaxnite your video also got on MediaCorp News 5
@@Galaxnite DTL Stage 2 and SMRT's Double Decker Buses happened.
good job, galaxnite!
6.9 million? We would be fortunate if we can cling on to the roof top of the bus like what you see on news in some third world countries!
DTL killed 700.
Galaxnite, thank you. It is slightly better now.
The infamous video that launched 972.
It poses a far more critical safety issue than anyone can imagine. It is possible, but it would take years for people to learn to let passengers alight first before boarding, just like in the mrt. Secondly, there are some people who will most definitely not tap their card to pay for the bus fare because there is no bus conductor present. I have seen in happen even when passengers board from the front and they seize the opportunity to do so when there are many people boarding the bus.
isit the smrt's fault or the passengers who refused to move in? are the passengers supposed to board frm the back entrance?
i think it is bad that SMRT only takes action after this video became viral. as a regular public transport user myself, i am very sure that bus service 190 is not a unique case.
You have to shout... OEI !!!! BEHIND NO GHOST !!!! PLEASE MOVE IN !!!!
(4) i'll be damned if its wrong to board from the exit door, im not waiting for 5 buses just so i can board the freaking bus.
Kudos to you for uploading this video!
My lecturer used to say, anything is possible, sky is the limit, i suggest you contact him.
Sometimes both drivers and already onboard passengers are at fault, the passengers should move, and the drivers should encourage them to move, and maybe smrt could create a feedback form, and they can supply more buses at a certain time, or just supply more buses overall, they can also supply more double deck buses too
It is the bus driver's duty to advise passengers to move to the rear.they can't be bothered
it is part & parcel of their job
Hehe that's why I would always walk all the way to cathay just to board 190
Bus stopping when its already fully loaded is no use. It will just cause the existing to be even longer. Bus driver calling the passengers to move back is also a waste of time at every stop, esp when bus is already almost full anyway. A 1 hour journey time can be increased to 2 hrs easily with all the stopping and shouting.
If it were me... Rather than waste time waiting for bus after bus.. I wld rather sacrifice the time to take the train instead...
