  • Hey guys! So far classes at Penn State Behrend are going pretty well. I've joined SAE supermileage club and a few other clubs. I have also checked out the Erie Makerspace. It's small and doesn't have half the tools HackPGH does however it still kinda has a home away from home feel to it. I will do my best to continue congealing videos together for you all. I might do a live stream sometime. Anyone interested in that? Thank you guys for sticking around! I've got lots of cool videos backed up in the pipeline that I recorded over the summer. I just need more time to edit them... Also let me know whether you like the music by voting in the poll. Click the little ⓘ cards icon in top right hand corner of the video or by posting a comment. If you guys want me to use a little more background music then I will try to find a friend who will make me some original tracks. I don't want to use all the overused junk that UA-cam provides through creative commons.
    Here is the crucible that I have: www.amazon.com/Foundry-Graphi...
    Keep exploramenting and thank you for watching!

    I don't know who would dislike this video it's a very well made video it looks like Makerj101 did take his time and didn't rush the video and it really does make me want to try melting more than just lead and reusing bullet lead to make my own bullets.

    have you ever thought about redoing some of your internal combustion engine with aluminum parts instead of copper? i don't really know if there is much thermal difference between copper and aluminum. but if there is it would do well as a cylinder wall and water jacket combo when you finally do the cooling so it will keep compression and actually run for more than a few minutes

    If you have any spare convection ovens or spare toaster ovens, you can use their heating coils to melt aluminum.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому +1

      Yes i could! I rather burn stuff than use electric though. Just my personal opinion. When I make a nice metal melter I'm going to make it propane powered so I can take it anywhere without worrying about whether there will be enough electrical power to use it.

    • @channelisborked9023
      @channelisborked9023 7 років тому +1

      While true, you could do that, just trying to offer a solution to your carbon contamination issue from the coal burning.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому +1

      You've actually given me a really good idea. I wonder how well a toaster oven heating element would work. Cause like everyone can get that kinda heating element easily and if that can be used to melt aluminium then it would open up aluminium casting to a lot more people. Now I gotta try this some time! Thank you for inspiring the idea!

    Is that coal you are using in the fire? And where are you located? If in the southern states or the midwest, hedge wood, black locust, and mulberry woods will burn as hot or even hotter (thus using less fuel to smelt the metals) than coal. (I know about hedge as I made my wood stove "dance" using it!).

      +Tyler B a pile of bricks, or a hole in the ground works pretty good. Then use lump charcoal for fuel and a hair dryer for air. Bottom of an empty propane tank works well for a crucible. I have a video about cutting then open without exploding yourself. Fire extinguishers lounge Grant Thompson used are too rare. Pretty much have fun and experiment. It's not as dangerous as everyone says it is. Be careful and use common sense.

    Good video! I see that you mention MyFordBoy quite a bit. I have been following his videos for quite a while. He is great! He is such a skilled individual. I wonder for your crucible lifter if you added a handle that stuck straight up from the one that you have now to help you with leverage to dump it. One hand would do most of the holding and it would pivot in that hand while the other hand would supply the dumping/rotating motion on the added 12 inch handle. Know what I mean?

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      Yeah I think I know what you mean. Kinda like how this one has a bar sticking down to give you more leverage/raise the center of gravity? The other thing I could do is put more of a bend in the handle to make the center of gravity more centered.

    That carbon from the coal is a good thing. You wont need to flux the liquid metal for impurities as much or at all because of the carbon the coal put into the aluminum.

    You do warm the tin over the fire before pouring right? Bad idea to pour molten metal into cold metal.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      +logandh2 No I do not warm them. I don't see any problem with pouring hot metal into a cold mold. If I was using a cast iron mold then it might crack from the shock. That's the only problem I could see. What are you thoughts on why it is a bad idea?

    • @logandh2
      @logandh2 7 років тому

      +Makerj101 Its not so much the cold, though that does play a part, if there is any moisture on the surface of your mold then it will erupt into steam in contact and potentially cause an explosion of liquid metal due to the steam pushing it back out in an effort to escape. To avoid this you really should consider place your molds over the flame for a little while before pouring to really ensure that they're dry, just wiping them down won't necessarily do the trick. Trust me, you don't want liquid hot metal blown in your face

      I'm looking at them on eBay right now. Looks like most of them are 10psi but there are some that go 0-60psi and others that are 0-30psi. How much pressure do I need? Thank you so much!

    36 gigabytes of footage?! Wow, did you have the camera on the whole day?

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому +2

      Nope! Not all day! That new camera I got, the Sony a6000 does some amazing Full HD at 60FPS which is my stranded now. The bit rate is 50mbps which means it takes takes about 1 GB to record 3 minutes of footage. So around 100 minutes via the maths. In reality it is more like 70 min of footage. The final file that I uploaded was 8.7GB. Took around 10 hours to upload. Uggggghhhhh I hate slow internet. Thank you Time Warner Cable. Very timely. Very timely.

    • @AwsomeVids83

      Makerj101 Wow, 1GB for only 3 minutes of footage! And that really is slow Internet speed! My connection would take ~4 hrs to upload 9GB, and I thought that was slow! Well, thanks for going through all that to upload this video, I really appreciate it!

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      +A. Zak that's not too slow. I could go up to Penn state and use there really fast internet but then I'd have to sit there while it uploads and log onto the school computer with my UA-cam account. They have 500mbps up down on the school desktops. The WiFi is so slow tho. It's just easier to set it up and let it uploaded while I'm sleeping. My internet is 20 down 2.5mbps up. I'm so spoiled from the fiber optic that I had back in Pittsburgh. What internet provider do you have? I've got Time Warner Cable.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      +Eman2000 what internet provider do you have? Do you have DSL? seems rather slow. I go though all the work and time to process this high quality footage so I wouldn't want to take the chance of down grading it any. Plus I highly doubt that software would support the special Sony XAVC-S format that I use. I could always render it in a smaller and lower quality format like MP4. But again, I want to give UA-cam the highest possible quality to work with so my videos look just a little better. I don't know how much of a difference it really makes. It's just my obsession hahaha

    • @AwsomeVids83

      I've got Cox Cable Internet, currently at 32 mbps down, 17mbps up.

    Problems with the ingots falling out. I think that is because of the coating sticking to the ingot. I had the aluminium very hot when I tried it for the first time with a coal furnace and the coating exploded into flames. Nothing to dramatic but that coating was gone and the ingot fell out with out me trying. The second time i was casting with a torch and decided to try the ingot mold since i had it then it wasn't as hot and it stuck. I ended up heating it up from behind for a while but it came out after 10 min. The main issue i have is the crucible. I lost like 3 KG of aluminium because of bad crucible. I got my shit together now and i will order a crucible soon. But anyway like the new style/music .

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101  7 років тому

      I think you are right. Probably the coating melting and gluing the ingots in. Yeah I lost a full propane tank of my best aluminium right into my coal forge. It clogged up the whole air supply pipe and made a huge unusable artwork of coal and aluminium. That's what caused me to invest in a real crucible because it p@#$ me off a lot. Thank you! I will try finding some more original music.
