  • Hi everyone, welcome back to Songs From Home, episode 49 “Bells Are Ringing”...
    In the late 1990’s, I had the great honor to play for our service women and men in the Balkans, in the days leading up to Christmas…I traveled with the wonderful folks from the USO and Secretary William S. Cohen and his team. On Christmas Eve, our last stop was a quonset hut in Kosovo, where the land mines were so prevalent that one had to stay on the asphalt paths between structures or risk disaster.
    The experience of sharing a meal and singing holiday songs with the service women and men in that quonset hut, on Christmas Eve, will stay with me forever. The spirit and meaning of the holiday was never clearer. There were no fancy clothes, food, presents or music. There was just a guitar, and the joined voices of people far from home.
    No doorways, no windows, no walls, no shelter here on the ground
    No standing, no safe place to fall, just the promise of this distant sound
    Bells are ringing, all over the world, bells are ringing, calling the light
    Bells are ringing, all over the world, all over the world tonight
    Thank you for your incredible response to “One Night Lonely”, that is another experience that will stay with me forever. To all of our friends at @wolf_trap who made it possible, our production and tech crew who made it look and sound amazing and to all of you who bought a ticket to join us, we are deeply thankful.
    Until the next time, stay well, stay strong, wear your mask everywhere, carry on, and #staymighty !

    Mary, thank you for all of your music. I'm a fan since 1988. Last night I rediscovered "Down At The Twist And Shout"! I dug out my 12 string and played along while dancing around the kitchen! Such energy and so uplifting! Thanks again...for all of it!

It is also just you. You make us feel as though we have been friends forever. I am so very thankful for that, dear friend...

    First time I’ve heard this song and It is so very moving. It speaks in and for the season it was written and then again in many seasons after. A true gift to write and express a song that does that. These ‘Songs from Home’ could equally be entitled ‘Songs from Heart’. Thank you so much Mary. I look forward to every new episode. Sending love to you, Angus & White Kitty - from Monica in the UK.

    I lost my brother to dementia in the spring. I lost my son to suicide on This Thanksgiving Day. My wife of 41 years was felled by a massive stroke just four days later. She may never return to me. The color had drained from my world, but then I heard your sweet voice again and managed a brief smile. Funny how the little things can dim the bad, if just for a moment. Thank you for that small sanctuary from my storm.

    Thanks for this. I just came across all of the songs you’ve been doing since this pause in life that has hit us. I could listen to your voice all day especially, your more mellow songs, and often have for the good part of a day. I was looking forward to your Toronto appearance that unfortunately did not happen. Please take good care of yourself. I would not want to stop hearing your new songs. Hopefully I can get a copy of your One Night Lonely performance over the coming weeks.

    Never knew you sang to our service men and women. I really love who you are as person. The concert was amazing. It's was sad when I saw all the empty chairs behind you. I'm sure it was sad for you to. I took going to concerts for granted . I lay their on my couch with ear phones plugged into my laptop and watched you sing away . You look into the camera and don't see our smiles and joy. We are faceless . We are silent. I hope you could feel the love in our comments . You were safe and we were safe. I love our community here .So many kind souls that mirrors yours. Thank you for the concert . And it is great to be able connect with you . So cute White Kitty and Angus was on the decorating crew. Will be happy when 2020 over that is for sure. God bless you and your people.

    MCC, as you said, it took a pandemic to get you to perform a solo concert, but it was magical and lifted my spirits. It was also a good reminder that even when things seem so bleak, there is still so much goodness in the world. If we follow your example and keep “calling the light” and spreading the hope, we will get each other through this. Thank you so much! Hugs to you, Angus, and White Kitty. 🤗 💜 Stay safe everyone. #staymighty

      Good Evening NN, The seasons are coming bringing a birth of new hopes and dreams for the goodness of all people. The Autumn colors were late coming out and muted in their brightness. The summer heat and drought most likely the cause. Still drives through the country get us out of the house and the trees have a more earthy hue this year. It’s a different type of beauty to enjoy as we wait for the colors of Winter. Enjoy the colors around you and spread the goodness to all you meet. Bless you this coming Thanksgiving.

    I had a friend who was involved in peacekeeping work in the Balkans. Sadly, she was murdered a few years later in Iraq. Hearing the story associated with your song reminds me of those troubled times, and the good intentions of those involved. How nice that you went and performed for them. Bravo.

    RE: 27th of November,2020, I know I ride roughshod over MCC's apt word play on live stream performance for one night only during pandemic home isolation, but I gotta say it was "One Night [Less] Lonely" - surely she knew the connection would make it so. The international audience is as good as the astronaut effect for knowledge that we all share the third rock from the sun and an emotional "climate" magnified by Mary Chapin Carpenter's outsized heart and intrepid mind. There's TED talks and RadioLabs on mirror neurons and feeling unity and transcendence. I say we had a peak experience.

      Hello!! What a beautiful synopsis and comment, Ma Ba. I am EVER so grateful for the 'connecting' concert, and am super excited to be awaiting another Episode of SFH.
      Dear MCC, your spirit SHINES - ever so brightly. Thank you! Showers of blessings from Cape Town, RSA.

      Ma Ba: There have been so many times where I have come to the comment section knowing how I feel and what I want to say, but I just can’t seem to put the words together to truly express my thoughts and emotions. What you wrote here about the connection and emotional climate expressed it so well. I will look for those TED talks, they sound very interesting and certainly relate to what I feel here at “home”.

    • @Ma_Ba
      @Ma_Ba 3 роки тому

      @@nurturenature2282 Howdy? (How-do you-do?) I was brimming with emotion. I forgot to appreciate her, with less saccharine sentimentality, for her craft and musicianship. Another time I wrote that I was positively kvelling over Mary Chapin Carpenter's performance, which @Ursula Mulder responded to in kind.
      Performing and visual arts, literature, community, children, animals, nature, weather, and architecture have the potential to render me both really big AND small in the world - to feel connection to "humanity" and to the ages. I am an atheist, but this is my access to spiritual experience.
      (Mirror neurons studied re: Empathy, social interaction, theory of mind, formulation of religious entity. Examine if in transcendent religious experience sense that we are all connected, in meditative states, and in psychoactive mind altering lsd trips that were linked with lasting effect in life. TED talk and Radiolab followed examples.)

    • @ursulamulder110
      @ursulamulder110 3 роки тому +1

      @Ma Ba
      I think many of us are kvelling!
      I am not sure, but I feel that the German expression of being 'mit stolz geschwellter Brust' comes close to kvelling: 'schwellen' and 'kvellen' seem so close! 😊
      And although I have absolutely NOTHING to do with Ms Carpenter's wonderful achievements, yes, my heart bursts with pride - on her behalf.
      And to add a mildly South African flavour: Viva, MCC, Viva!!

    Yes, it's going to be a "different" holiday season. I live alone so I signed up to clean kennels at the animal shelter where I volunteer Christmas morning. Breaking the isolation in a safe way and give back plus get some exercise.
    My oven has never worked. (it's old) Since I was in charge of my own Thanksgiving this year, I embraced "There Are No Rules" and grilled some turkey thighs on my old school Weber (charcoal and wood chips). But the game changer was throwing the carrots, celery and onions on the grill as well before folding them into the stuffing. Gave the whole thing a really nice smoky undertone. Ended up with a really good meal for one, dining with whatever I was watching on UA-cam for company. It wasn't the Thanksgiving I would have chosen, but it was good in its own right. And the next night I watched your concert.

My plans as I said and also my dreams are to hold the CD in my hands early next year. I love that you speak German, I'd love to learn it some day a bit at least, it's an earlier thought I'd have just liked to tell you! Thank you for having fingers crossed! Hungary calling RSA:-)love this idea:-)I also love when you write a little South African flavour in your posts! Sending many smiles, greetings, best wishes, blessings! Oh dear! Sorry! I misunderstood!
      Thought you had been able to join in experiencing the Wolf Trap concert...
      Apologies. I hope you receive the CD soon! With our unreliable postal service in mind (South Africa), I am looking forward to the downloadable version. And I am still hoping that a DVD may be released at some time 🤞: lighting, sound and videography were SPLENDID. And our beloved artist SHONE! Good night for now - I assume it is past your midnight already. 😴

      @@ursulamulder110 Hi! For some time, the premiere resided/resounded within me, but I ducked in the last hours to review it with a notepad by my hand. After, I went for a deep dive on a few songs as I was susceptible to them in a new way. (There is perhaps an issue with bad actors profiteering off of digital videos without residuals or royalties to the artist and producers of original material. And it undermines the "marketplace" of performers' livelihoods. Kind of digital age economics of supply and demand and labor...means of production ...of artist/worker exploited. Commerce and art says the darndest things! Before Edison and means of recording, there were some opera stars and a Jenny Lind. We made our own parlor music, porch music, church music, klezmer music, folk singers, gypsies, mariachis, and troubadours. Now make this multi cultural and historically more accurate! )

      @Ma Ba.
      Hi again.
      I don't feel qualified to have an answer to the latter part of your post, but yes, I too watched those guitars during my umpteenth logging on (am EVER SO grateful for the chance to do so) - I think it would be really great if the instruments could be introduced during a SFH session, perhaps? I am allowed to dream out loud, right? 😊😍

      @@ursulamulder110 Hey, maybe in liner notes to the cd's and lp's!? Recently, in SFH when she brought out the Martin, she introduced it and said the model number. She is using it again in this very SFH, so my ear is getting educated. The sunburst guitar that she used in "One Night Lonely" begs an introduction though.
