My goodness, I haven't heard this Ian and Sylvia song in well over 55 years. It takes me back to a time when folk music was what we were listening to. It brought tears to my eyes, and that is a hard thing for a 74 year old man to deal with. It's hard to type, when it feels like I am looking through an aquarium. Lovely, just lovely.
Hey. I agree wholeheartedly. - MCC, your cover version is moving me to tears. So grateful for the way you share your art, and for your generosity of reaching out to so many listeners/viewers around the world. Your voice has a healing quality. Thank you. 🤩
A timeless song sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter with her timeless voice. Thank you, Ian Tyson, for writing this moving music, thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter for singing and recording yourself, and thank you to all involved with the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. Can't wait to see y'all back on the hill next summer. Until then, may you sing "Four Strong Winds" with the wind at your back!
While not part of Chapin's "Songs from Home" series, it is always a pleasure to hear her sing, especially these days. I'll borrow for a moment: Stay mighty, all our neighbors to the north. We'll see you again soon.
Oh I missed this jewel, this is so special, Mary brings tears to my eyes and make me smile at the same time, such a precious moment ... She's so very Human and tender, she heals our deepest wounds, she makes us feel alive, she's exquisite, and she sounds and plays like an angel ... Thank you so much for sharing !
Bless you Mary...........I am Canadian and grew up listening to Ian and Sylvia performing this. You absolutely killed it with this.......perhaps the best live performance I have ever seen you do!!
As an Alberta girl of 39 years, this song hits ALL the feels. We moved to NW Sask to homestead, 2 months before my 40th birthday. Life is quiet, serene, and more fulfilling, away from the rat race of a more populous province like Ab.
Oh Mary, tears filled my eyes. I attended your concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London a few years back, and was enthralled. This from home was also from the heart, you are one in a million.
It's been a rough couple of years for us all, hasn't it. I have never felt so embraced, comforted and loved by an artist and a performance. Thank you and God Bless you Mary.
Over the years I've heard several Canadian songwriters say that until they first heard "Four Strong Winds" they didn't realize that people wrote songs about Canada. So I thank this song not just for Ian Tyson and Sylvia Fricker, but for James Keelaghan and the McGarrigle sisters and David Francey and Stan and Garnet Rogers and Marie-Lynn Hammond and more brilliant singer-songwriters than I can list at the moment.
James Keelaghan’s Cold Missouri Waters silenced the house (auditorium) the first time I heard it. Stunning performance. And I’d add Ron Humes to your list!
I heard that Ian Tyson wrote this as a response to Blowin' In The Wind, by Bob Dylan. I have seen both artists live. Ian Tyson and Sylvia Fricker are Canadian music icons, for sure.
Hello Nurture Nature, I see your here also enjoying this song. Have you seen her with the Edmonton Folk Festival on UA-cam? It’s really good. I’d like to go up there one time to see it. My college, Northland, in northern Wis. began their Folk Festival back in 1968/9 I believe. They’re good places to go and just relax and listen. Peace
@Nurture Nature Hope you continue to keep well, a WHOLE year on? Needless to say, I miss SFH, and all the interactions. I wish MCC only the best for the tour that is about to start. Stay Mighty, NN! Greetings from RSA 🇿🇦
Your voice soothes my soul like a lullaby. So grateful to you for sharing your soulful voice during these stressful times. Thank you! Love & Light ☮️💗🙂
"Come what may. . ." I first heard this song over 50 years ago, when I was a boy. It has become more poignant and meaningful over the years, to the point that I can't hear it without tearing up. What a beautiful and touching version Mary has gifted to us. Yup: I'm crying. "Come what may."
Ah, such a beautiful heartfelt rendering of a classic, sung by the most captivating female vocalist & performer of our generation. Mary Chapin Carpenter you have the rare gift to touch souls with your voice.
Yes...Mary and ALL her Songs From Home has lifted me and carried me through each tough day...You are "gold" Mary... Such a Blessing and..P.S. I love your guitar :)
A shout out to Canada, that's the way I read it. She mentions a couple of Canadian cities on her very first CD. I'm re-listening to her CDs, spurred on by her Songs from Home videos.
This song originally written & sung by Ian & Sylvia effected me greatly as a teen in the 60’s. It’s words were so romantic to me. I grew up in Chicago but I travelled to Canada in my early 20’s and many times thereafter always with this song in my mind. Just a wonderful song that I’ve played a thousand times. I’ll add this beautiful version to my collection.
Goodnight miss Mary Hava good night's rest lol I been watching all the videos that I love most I like email all just I'm crazy about these haha well I'm off to watch TV til I fall asleep oh meant tell you I have a dog name is Jasper, take keep mighty wear masks not wash hands lol hope I see you 2morrow oh I joined urban fan club last night don't how I found it or who's it is but that was their choice to let me in or not gesshh sometimes I just done understand me I always talk far too much I'm so very sorry try not catch u 2morrow xox
These Songs from Home are an opened window to how life, living and humanity should become. Life is really that simple, can be that beautiful and rewarding. It was many years ago, here. Thanks for shinning a light onto a world lost. Thanks again Angus and White kitty you are wonderful, the lady singing does pretty good too. 😇✌️👍
i was driving overnight from Scotland to London and Mary was on I think radio 2 late at night, she made it the best lone journey I have ever done, amazing voice, thank you Mary
I went to college in the early 1970s in Canada and I could hear Sylvia and Ian on the radio in the dorm and often students strumming and singing this very song. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
Beautiful, always loved this song. Your sessions from home are calming to the Heart and Soul during these times. Thank you for your generosity of music and space to sit back and have a moment of soothing through song.
Greetings Canada from Central Europe! I hope we can uplift your heart Dear Mary and Dear All from here where we can meet now. I am sure your montage of voices will sound like a blessing, sure of that! Greetings with all my heart! God bless and peace!
Hello , Fancy meeting you here. I just sent a comment to Nurture Nature, and here I find you good friend. This is the first time reading the comments to this song of Ms. Mary’s. Ski slopes are trying to open here in the Midwest but only by making their own snow. I guess if I want a White Christmas I’ll either hope the movie comes on TV or drive up to look at the man made snow from the car. It’s still not safe to go into places as far as my health is concerned. Hope your Christmas is white.
While this is probably one of my favourite versions of this song, it wasn't actually sung as the last song of the finale until 1989. I cannot remember exactly what we sang the first three years but I do know that we sang Stan Roger's Mary Ellen Carter from 1983 to 1988. There are so few of us left from those early years but there are songs and pictures that start the tears flowing again. May we all be on the hill again, in spirit if not in person.
Beautiful! Reminds me of a story about a young man leaving his home in Canada first time away from home with little funds he stopped in a dinner to get warm and noticed the Juke box he played four strong winds and loved it so much he continued playing it until he was out of money and from that day until now he plays that song every chance he has the mans name is Neil Young
Mary Chapin Carpenter, from your very first cd Inam a fan, lost you somewhere in between and found you again innthese peculiar times. Your voice is so beautifull and I can‘t praise enough your tiny concerts, cheering us up. Last time I‘ve heart 4 strong winds was from Johnny Cash. I thought, it could not be done better, but sou proved me wrong. Thank you so much!
Well, add this day to the list of times that MCC has made me cry, or at least made my voice crack as I (tried) to sing along. Beautifully performed as always. Thank you. Thank you.
I believe it was in the mid 60's when I first heard this song sung by Maryann Faithful and I have loved it ever since. This is an especially beautiful rendition of this very beautiful song of loneliness and pathos.
Look forward to my weekly visit with MCC and now this special bonus. It takes me back to my childhood when my father would play the Brother’s Four version of this classic. Blessings all.
Stuff..like fingers being to dang big for this teenincy buttons ..ahhh jokin..just let me know. Would make my whole world l promise!!!💗🐈🐕🤛💞found something new fount emojis lol
Oh my goodness Mary. You are my heroine. I've listened to your music for 20+ years and you have no idea the part you and your music have played in my life. I saw you as well, front row in a concert of yours in Liverpool where I live a few years ago!
What a truly awesome amazing song. From an awesome amazing very strong lady. You are truly the Best of the best. You have not only held up in these trying times. You have allowed thousands of other people to rest on your shoulder by posting your videos. And reaching out to people. Thank you for sharing your video and being such a nice person. I truly hope you have a blessed week. Stay well and safe my friend.
Such a beautiful lady! Soft gentle voice. No makeup, no hairdresser or costume designer, simple honesty.
You are the judge.
Well, the song didn't make me weepy, but your comment did.... ❤✌
Same emotions here! I remember this from my Judy Collins infatuation in the 70's! MCC just brought it all back! What a beautiful rendition.
Written by Ian Tyson in response to Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind.
Completely understand, I'm 70.
@@915buck I'm 65....
Mary, this effort of yours to support and uplift the nation in a time of crisis will be a lasting legacy of yours.
Who can't be touched by that beautiful song finished with a wonderful smile. Mary Chapin Carpenter, you are gold!
Hey.
I agree wholeheartedly. -
MCC, your cover version is moving me to tears. So grateful for the way you share your art, and for your generosity of reaching out to so many listeners/viewers around the world. Your voice has a healing quality. Thank you. 🤩
So, so lovely, Dear Mary! 🥰
I had forgotten how extraordinary MCC's voice is! Time hasn't weakened it at all!
A timeless song sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter with her timeless voice. Can't wait to see y'all back on the hill next summer. Until then, may you sing "Four Strong Winds" with the wind at your back!
I love playing this song, but Mary's just made me feel like I've never heard it before. Expressive doesn't even come close.
The best part of this pandemic has been your gift of song.
Beautiful from the wonderful Mary Chapin and thank you for songs from Home . Kept us afloat during such difficult times. 🙏❤️🇮🇪
I haven’t heard this song since 1971. Thank goodness for Google and Mary and her gorgeous rendition.
SHE TOO, LOVED IAN TYSON!
While not part of Chapin's "Songs from Home" series, it is always a pleasure to hear her sing, especially these days. I'll borrow for a moment: Stay mighty, all our neighbors to the north. We'll see you again soon.
Thank you from a Canadian. Stay Mighty also, I can't wait to get back to Minnesota!
Stay mighty, from Toronto.
From an Albertan, stay mighty my Southern neighbours.
Sometimes I think reasons for living are in a collection of small moments. This performance is one of them. Thank you Mary.
...well said...♥️
Bless you Mary...........I am Canadian and grew up listening to Ian and Sylvia performing this. You absolutely killed it with this.......perhaps the best live performance I have ever seen you do!!
Just wonderful. Thankfully, Ian Tyson and Sylvia Fricker are still with us. No doubt, they will probably appreciate this rendition.
You dear, lovely lady…your voice is medicine for my soul❤
Thank you for the gifts through the years, another 74 yr old sitting here among your cassettes,CDs, the iPod, & now UA-cam...bless your sweet heart.
I used to play this song when I was in my 20s. 40 years ago!
Love this song. Mary, you do it beautifully.
I just Love Mary Chapin Carpenter’s Music and that Golden Voice❤️❤️❤️❤️
As an Alberta girl of 39 years, this song hits ALL the feels. We moved to NW Sask to homestead, 2 months before my 40th birthday. Life is quiet, serene, and more fulfilling, away from the rat race of a more populous province like Ab.
What can I say , brilliant would love to meet her one day ,RAY TWELVE STRINGS
Such a beautiful version from a beautiful lady! The way she looks I too the camera, it’s like she’s looking just at me!
What a Masterpiece. Neil Young said as a teen, he wore this out on a jukebox. Ian Tyson wrote it, and it’s fantastic here! Thank you.
I LOVE Mary Chaplin Carpenter.. Her Voice is so Soothing. One of the Best❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
I’ve always loved this beautiful woman’s voice and song writing ability! Top notch!! ❤️❤️❤️
Is it just me or does MCC s voice get better with the passage of time, Love this simple version of a classic.
Honest music, honestly played. I'm a new fan and I'm learning this song next. To hell with flash. Give me truth.
You are a gift in the darkest times. Just beautiful

Beautifull Mary..GOD Bless You and Canada..
Her voice has just the right low-tone for this song. Not many artists can sing the song the right way as Mary.

Mary, listening to you is absolutely intoxicating//// Beautiful beyond words....
Although written by Ian Tyson and I suppose made famous by Neil Young this is by far my favourite version. Thank you for posting.
American perspective? As a Canadian, Ian didn’t need any help making it famous. It’s still an excellent song. And MCC does it beautiful.
I went to college in the early 1970s in Canada and I could hear Sylvia and Ian on the radio in the dorm and often students strumming and singing this very song. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

I have to be honest, i was never a big fan of Mary Chapin. But she does a wonderful job with this song!
I can't think of anything to add that hasn't already been said, except my own personal thanks for this beautiful rendition.
