Also yeah, the actual town of Ooarai has GuP merch like literally everywhere, even in shops that have nothing to do with anime/nerd stuff. The show had that much of a positive effect on the town.

There are a surprising number of weebs among actual tank crews. Probably because of this show. It's basically a free army recruitment add for the armored division.
Another thing that makes GuP pretty unique is that it started as an original anime project (i.e no source material). They just went balls to the wall immediately and it worked amazingly well.
The worldbuilding with its internal consistency is unironically what made GuP's we-need-to-save-our-school plot make sense. The school carriers being a thing is absurd, but that in turn gives them the justification to shut down underperforming schools, because it logically takes a lot of budget to run these carriers, and why are the girls so determined to save their school? Because the school carrier is, for the most part, their hometown. Its not just the school, its the town on it as well that is under threat. With this context suddenly the plot and character motivation to save the school(and town) becomes very compelling.
Not to mention all the adults employed (the anime has shown bakeries, ice cream shops, libraries, convenience stores, etc. manned by adults) will also be out of jobs, BUT the first movie puts the girls' abilities to fight against the closing of the school by using them as hostages - if they try to protest the closing down, those adults will not be transferred to other places, instead will lose their jobs. So they're not fighting only for the school girls, they're also fighting for the adults that depend on their success to sustain their families!

It's unrealistic and bizarre. I wouldn't say I "love it" as much as it intrigues me for the sheer "wtf??" factor. I'm not even that into tanks, but seeing a Pz4 in genuine fear that a Churchill will catch up to and destroy it is simultaneously jarring and amusing to me.

Same. I watched anime before but this was one of the 3 series that got me deep into the anime world and I still love this series as the day it aired watching it week by week.
I think it is important to be noticed that this show is an "original anime" and not those which originated from a manga series. Most of the anime has long exposition because of limitation of its medium. On the otherside GuP has creativity freedom and some experienced staff such as anime director(Tsutomu Mizhushima, has experiences in Crayon Shin-chan movie series) and sound director (Yoshikazu Iwanami, famous for the sound of Jojo animated series) and scenario writer (Reiko Yoshida, famous for K-on anime) which suprisingly luxurious for a simple cute-girls-doing-cute-things anime. The GuP series made influences here in Japan like Oarai being the No1 anime pilgrimage sites and recongnizing the importance of movie theaters, especially sounds, since the Japanese movie industry didn't take seriously about their sound aspects. Thats the reason why I really love this series. I hope that even more people watch this beloved anime in the future.
A point you forgot to mention is that all tanks are draw exactly as they are in real life, the interiors, the sight to point the target, the ammunition, everything is how it supposed to be for each tank.
acually the fights are very unrealistic because tanks can´t drift and if you shot another tank it explodes or burns or simply stops moving also no air cover no ifantry no aa no supplie usw
@@gamerdrache6076for no infantry and support, it's a tank battle and a sports for them and not some reenactment of battles requiring manpower to enterta. While it's absurd about the logic and defying the law of science, the show itself wouldn't Garner an attention like what were here without satisfying action scenes and and slow movements weren't entertaining at all and this show will already drop on the charts if that what's their approach with the scenes
fun fact, tanks actually can drift but it depends on what tank most tanks have pieces rubber on the bottom of the tracks so they can grip on asphalt soviet tanks on the other hand have all steel tracks, thus they can slide on smooth surfaces and asphalt if you try hard enough
war thunder had almost all tanks of tier 1 and 2 being capable of goddamn tokyo drift but outside of warthunder and crazy run for your life like that one tank in bastogne nobody does the drifting ok tank testing grounds do but it's just test
I believe it was in goldeneye from 1995 where Bond drives a Soviet T-55 and sort of slides the tank. I mean I makes sense seeing as it is Soviet so I guess it is possible
I have personally witnessed an M1 Abrams drifting no less than three times. Once on asphalt, twice on gravel. Never underestimate the weird shit a PFC in a tank can do.
Girls und Panzer is an anime that has defined the last 10 years of my life. I literally met my best friends, got to play a lot of games and got soo much more deep into World history. All thanks to watching Girls und Panzer back in 2012. God what an absolute banger of an anime. Is soooo gooood
While the tanks and teams are accurate historical representations. What isn’t often noticed is that every last detail in the tank is also accurate to history, from the interior design and layout to the ammo used
As a history enjoyer I love GuP because it focuses on what's important, namely the tanks. There are no annoying subplots that span 3 episodes and focus on a character nobody cares about. It also doesn't really feel much like an anime, at least for an anime-illiterate like me. GuP also doesn't over-sexualize it's characters every third scene and there are no out-of-this world plot points, which is the reason I've dropped Strike Witches after the first episode (you know, the whole let's strap an airplane engine to our feet and let's fight some aliens bs). The only other anime I've seen whole apart from GuP is High School Fleet, but even that felt more focused on the conflict between the commander and vice-commander of the Harekaze than on the ships themselves, so I probably won't be rewatching that any time soon. GuP managed to include just enough anime in this soup of niche historical references to be acceptable by the general public, which is an incredible achievement if you think about it.
Aside from some of the OVAs and a scene here and there, there's really no fanservice. You'd expect an anime of all highschool girls to show more panty shots, but there isn't even one. Marie even does a perfect cartwheel onto the roof of her tank and her skirt does not reveal anything. I love that. I mean... Darjeeling is still the queen, but that's just me.
@@marcuscersy2393 I believe the lack of service came about because the anime promoted the actual city of Ooarai. (Every background shot of the streets was copied from an actual location.) The city, which is a prefectural capitol, probably wouldn't want their promoted show to be "that kind" of anime. The raciest thing they did was the anglerfish dance, which had costumes that still covered the girls head to toe. It's a genuine PG-rated anime not made by Studio Ghibli, offends no one (in Japan) and that's fine.
It a shame that this anime is not talked about as much as it use to be even some of the games that the colabrations were in are not utilized anymore. I love girls und panzer it just such a good anime. Thnxs for discussing this anime it brings a smile to my face.
As someone who watched the series purely for the tanks when I first started, I completely fell in love with the show, movies and OVAs. The sterotyping, the history exposition, the slice of life, the absoutely banger music and OST and finally the action cemented this one as one of my all time favorites and I do not mind defending it in a discussion. Absolutely fantastic video. 👏 Edit extra fact: I forgot which character's VA it was but she was an actual huge historic military buff who knew everything from guns to military conflicts and of course the tanks.
Minimal dialog is truly an art form, especially in sports anime. Too many shows seem to act like no one has heard of the sport before and have to explain every little thing in every scene.
@@allenharper2928 Yeah I can understand it if in character the people never heard of the game/sport. Sort of like the early episodes of things like Yugioh. But just like that anime it gets odd when you have supposedly pro players/champions explaining every little thing. I think the worst show was Hajime no Ippo, or Fighting Spirit. As much as I liked the show it was very odd how they rolled out techniques and moves as the series went on. As if the basics of boxing was not taught to the MC until the plot demanded it. Kid who been training for months didn't know something like a counter punch existed....
@@JustaGuy_Gaming Heh, there are times when the opposite is true though... Case in point, the Blue Archive anime. It follows the main stories pretty faithfully, but anyone new to it wouldn't have any idea about Kivotos, the different schools (aside from Abydos and a bit of Gehenna)
The conclusion of both the Kuromorimine match at the end of the series and of the match in the film are just so well made. The pacing, the score, the nonverbal input from the characters. I never expected this show to give me goosebumps on first viewing. And it did it twice.
The tense music as oppossed to triunfant "final battle" music, the sudden lack of it on the last moves of the battle, replaced by the sounds of engines, tracks and cannons; the timid main theme, almost not believing they won, gaining a bit of strength as they realize they _did,_ but not yet reaching full "victory theme" levels - and then as the two sisters shake hands, _the real victory,_ *the main theme going full blast!* Yes, it WAS beautiful, a masterclass in how to make a music score.
One of the best video analyses of this anime that I've been sent in my recommendations. Congrats for mentioning many smart things about this beloved show, which is still going, albeit at a slow pace.
This anime changed my life, it was everything I love in a convenient cute package. Great video, Love from Italy. Also, Anchovy is a credit to all Italian army members (under the General rank) of WW2: trying to come up on top with only creativeness without having the resources to compare to your adversaries. The only thing that was wrong with her is that they made her a reference to the bald guy with an overinflated ego(the guy WANTED to have the competence of Anchovy): we Italian weeaboos forgave her for this, but I think that I spoke for every Italian that it will be much more better if the GuP producers made her a reference to Giovanni Messe and made another character to reference the bald guy(with the mistakes of this character that hamper continuously the Anzio team).
I remember a photo from a book about WW2 in North Africa. Scattered trucks and vehicles, burning in the desert, dead soldiers and living ones, huddling for some cover. And amid the chaos a lone Italian machine gunner with his friend. The friend lying on the back and lifting one leg vertically up and the machinegunner using his friend's foot as an improvised weapon mount to blast away at the plane that is strafing them. I was reminded of it by your comment and I think it is indeed true that the Italian soldiers made the best out of nothing and should deserve more of the spotlight.
“cute girls and military” that’s pretty much my favorite kind of anime One of my favorites alongside GuP is the whole Strike Witches/World Witches Series universe It was created before GuP by the guy who did the character designs for the show, Shimada Humikane It has tons military and historical references, but mainly with WWII pilots But then adds a bunch of other crazy stuff

And a good natured Fie and drek upon you sir, for mentioning Requiem for a Dream with Anime girls.... certain 'A to A' scene is now immediate thought police territory, so thanks for that. Gonna go bleach my imagination now.
Well done! You're the first person to convince me to watch ANY anime in a decade or more. Those action scenes look really nicely animated, and proper fun. I couldn't care less about the melodramatic woes of high-school girls, but watching tanks fighting? Yeah, I can get behind that.
Girls und Panzer always feels like „Those Magnificent men in their flying machines“ to me with their playing on national stereotypes. And it is good they don‘t take themselves too seriously, imo.
Now that you mention it I think the lack of inner monologue exposition is probably the reason why this anime works so well. Btw my favorite Tank Crew are the nerds. Especially when they begin to train and can throw the AP Shells like it's paper XD
I havr allready saw this video that it just comes out, what i said is... HOWITZER, ARTILLERY, BATTLESHIP 3 O'CLOCK!, A39 TORTOISE MOVE IT, ON THE ROAD, SHOOTS EVERYTHING THAT MOVES FAST!
The way you explain this anime in this video reminds me of the first time I watched it in 2012 and passionately shared it with my new friends at the beginning of college. These are called memories. Thank you for this video. I'm subscribing now.
There's literally nothing like GuP imo. Also it's isn't sus, it's cute, has plenty of fun characters, cool tank fights, great music and WW2 references. Nothing more I can ask for. Also Rena Andou is best girl
There's a rumor that the open, boobage-showing, shirts of the Spanish-themed team were the result of the subtitlers' community jokingly daring the actual GuP team "wouldn't dare" to make them follow the Spanish Legion uniform (which uses mandatorily open, underwearless shirts to expose the legionaires' chests)... and the GuP team (which are known for _actually_ keeping tabs of their fandom, both Japanese and worldwide) reading the joke challenge and actually calling the bluff, the utter madlads. I know, it's just a rumor, but it shows the kind of madness we're dealing with here.
That was funny when you didn't realize tanks can drift! All the stereotypes and history jokes totally crack me up. I am waiting for das Finale to be finished, then I will rewatch the entire series from episode 1. The best thing about this anime is that it could actually make history fun for people who wouldnt ordinarily enjoy learning about history. I mean, if you did not know anything about the Maus, and then saw it in the show, you would probably assume that the tank is fictional, look it up, and be shocked that it actually existed. Or at least was a real prototype tank. And that would lead you down the rabbit hole that is WWII. Also, Higehiro is an amazing and beautifully deep and impactful anime. You should watch it if you haven't.
The thing that made me absolutely adore this show was when they were watching a movie that was obviously identifiable as Kelly's Heroes, one of my all time favorite WW2 movies. First time watching this series, I was watching it with friends, and I lost my shit at that scene, while none of my friends knew wtf I was talking about hahahaha
I honestly would have liked to see more, but it's a product of the era I grew up in. This might sound corny, but the first episode, when Miho's friends Saori and Hana stood up for her, really touched me. Even though they wanted to join the Tank Club, they chose to support Miho, who had a traumatic experience. That moment brought a tear to my eye. It's the kind of friendship where people are truly 'ride or die,' and you’d be lucky to have friends like that. Those are the good ones.
this anime got me into joining a fan-clan of the German KMMHS school in World of Tanks (SEA region), we even had mock private sensha-dou battles with other fan-clans
Man, as both a tank nerd and a weeb i can say, i love this damn series so much. Actually rewatched it like 5-6 times and still love it. Also man episode 4 of finale is already out? Welp i know what ill be doing after this. Honestly wish thisll never end. Also actually bought the game for ps4 as well. Hella fun and builds even more ontop of everything.
without question my favorite anime, i have the complete series on blue ray including the movies and OVAs, its a hidden gem of anime that most people write off as being absurd trash
Imma say this... Yukari and Erwin singing "Yuki No Shingun" during their recon walk against Pravda was the peak of the whole show. Also Yukari is my spirit animal.
I'd heard a lot about this anime, and honestly kind of wrote it off as something rather ridiculous and all of that. That said...after watching this, I think I'll have to give it a watch.
one thing worth to mention, is how perfect is GuP due to this combination. when you aren't a history nerd, history related films might be hard to catch you, or even scenes that are intense with tanks (like a troop facing a tiger I) might not feel as they would when you know about the topic, because you just might see a big car slow as a snail that looks like any other one (something my sister would say). In the other hand, GuP has a perfect balance between history and light plot, that any casual viewer can watch it, have a good time and having the chance to get into the history community, specially when the show things like the maus, or the KV-2 shooting, and once you do start researching you might even have the surprise that those tanks in the anime exist and are exactly like the anime (the best part of that, I want a collection of GuP and I plan to make it myself by looking for a scale model of the tank, paint it the right color and put the banner of the school)
Panzer Vor! I especially love how consistent their weird internal universe is... there are Tankery cafes with tank cakes, Tankery shops (which remind me of the Futbol stores over here), citizens get paid off handsomely when their home/business gets accidentally blown up by High School Girls in Bloody Tanks, etc. Such a well crafted show for such a bizarre concept.
8:57 admittedly this is a pretty good attempt at an Aussie accent. I've never watched GuP but know of the memes. And I'm almost certain the reason why us Australians didn't get more screen time is due to the 'aesthetic design feature' of Australia's first and only home made tank that was designed and produced during WWII. I give you: The Sentinel. 🤣
“We had to design an armored cover to protect the water-cooled Vickers gun.” “Okay, fair enough, but my question was, ‘Why does it look exactly like a fat metal cock?’” “Oh, the answer is simple; because it’s funny, of course!”
Wow, surprised to see you here Ascendant. But it is a GuP review video in 2023 so it makes sense GuP fans would slowly congregate here and discover one another. Of course I left my signature essay long comment here so you can read that should you get the time to read something as long as my usual big comments.
In one episode the girls are seen watching Kelly's Heroes and cry when the Tiger gets shot and destroyed from behind. Now that's a level of nerdiness I wasn't expecting to see and loved every second of it. By the way, everytime I remember the Katiusha song and the scenes... I get massive goose bump even after all these years
One of my friends who I tried to get into GuP said that the character designs were too generic. This opinion was formed by looking at a picture of Erika and Maho stood next to each other in uniform. AKA the most uniform thing in GuP. I sent them a picture of the history team after that. They still weren't convinced and also said that "CGI doesn't belong in anime" of course referring to the tanks. So I sent a screenshot of one of the later episodes where the tanks fit in basically seamlessly. However, then they said that they didn't like how quiet the first episode was and that it was so boring they stopped watching. I tried to convince them again, and they told me to stop trying to force them to watch it, which would be fair if they hadn't hounded me to watch the entirety of JOJO beginning in part 1 *for 4 YEARS.* I tried to bring that up, and they simply said that "That's different because JOJO is good" I gave up.
Yeah i hate this kinda guy aswell They forced their and said theirs are better Not good fella to hangout in my opinion How the DUCK GuP is boring The only think i can came up with your friend excuses 1 they never realy interested in tanks or military stuf 2 they are realy just normies thar like shounen anime only who also watch Aot and fnaboying MHA aswell FRICKING DEMON SLAYER
Absolutely amazing video about one of the most bizarre anime i have ever heard of! Had me cracking up constantly. Editing was also amazing! Keep up the good work!
It's the anime that half the War Thunder community curses under their breaths and the other half cheers and celebrates. (I fall into the latter category, naturally, else I wouldn't be watching this).
I probably will never watch anything but anime for the rest of my life... Compared to western cartoons or animated movies or even real life series, it just wins every time. And, yes, I do not care if the title is longer than the intro. Even the most silly concept works. Just compare is to, say, the latest Oscar winning movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once". It was hailed as mind bending and new and fresh and something that was never seen...yet, this would be one judged as a mediocre first episode of an anime. Seen that dozens of times. Haven't watched GuP, but it's on my list now. I am more the isekai shonen type, but like to find something different from time to time. It is amazing how they do it! Every. Single. Time. I see a new anime with an absurd title, a funny theme, and at first glance the typical characters. But after half a season there is already so much backstory and drama and fun you are absolutely invested. "Game of Thrones"? Who cares about that basic piece of film... There are still some series I do enjoy beside anime, but not many. They lost their luster compared to how deep and fun an anime is...even when they just throw in some barely clad girls, tentacle monsters and weapons powered by singing and painting to safe a kingdom of fluffy bunnies...you probably will be crying when one of the protagonists dies, cheering when they are avenged. Again: I do not know how they make this happen, but anime are so much better than other shows in all aspects.
@@toasterkolin9951 She saved her but yea she would have drowned and was a source of trauma for her. They also mentioned the risk of a stray shell hitting the commander but generally never happens.
The fact that firing the machine guns at exposed people is banned could imply that someone tried it before (they definitely do fire the machine guns a few times in the show, either to keep enemy heads inside the tank with less visibility or to calculate shots for the main gun, not sure which).
10:25 ok my guy, just remember to keep the arm lowered. 10:55 also fun fact Italy was preparing it's war industry's for war and it's military but the ready for war date was in the middle of 1942, but Mussolini saw how fast and strong germany went through poland and the low country's and france, so he joined the war, a whole 2 years before his nation would be ready for a war, so while his soldiers where ready and eager to fight, the industry and production was no where near what it should have been, so getting bigger anti tank guns, took the germans about a month and a half, it took the Italians about a year and a half, by thay point their upgrade of anti tank gun was already out of date.
As a WW2 fan. a tank fan and a anime fan. When i first discovered this anime a dream i did not know that i had came true. And i binged watched the entire thing and the grin did not leave my face even for a single moment. I regulary rewatch this anime because it is just everything i could possebly want in one.
The weirdest thing is that the GuP universe might be an alternate world, but it is deliberately meant to ALSO have WW1 and WW2 exactly as we remembered it. Because if the wars changed then the war references wouldn't have made sense. Most anime dance around WW2, but GuP does not and insist that the wars are unchanged despite everything ELSE changing in-universe.
Bro it’s soo sad that the anime doesn’t have more episodes but I love this anime soo much because I like action and I like a good story so this is a very good anime to watch when you are bored 10/10🎉

You could also add Haifuri (aka High School Fleet) about high school girls operating warships.
Girls und panzer legitimately holds a place in me for making me a tank nerd back in 2015
It not only made me a tank nerd, but an actual tank crewman
@@taistelusammakko5088ust be nice, i failed to qualify for my countries armoured force cause im a giant and i wouldn't fit in the T-72s 😂
A point you forgot to mention is that all tanks are draw exactly as they are in real life, the interiors, the sight to point the target, the ammunition, everything is how it supposed to be for each tank.
acually the fights are very unrealistic because tanks can´t drift and if you shot another tank it explodes or burns or simply stops moving also no air cover no ifantry no aa no supplie usw

fun fact, tanks actually can drift but it depends on what tank
most tanks have pieces rubber on the bottom of the tracks so they can grip on asphalt
soviet tanks on the other hand have all steel tracks, thus they can slide on smooth surfaces and asphalt if you try hard enough

I have personally witnessed an M1 Abrams drifting no less than three times. Once on asphalt, twice on gravel.

What isn’t often noticed is that every last detail in the tank is also accurate to history, from the interior design and layout to the ammo used
They might be realisticly designed, but a M4A1 eating a 88mm Pzgr. isn't
If you haven't already, give The Cockpit, Zipang, Skycrawlers and Sento Yousei Yukikaze a shot. More serious animes with ww2 themes or inspiration.

Edit extra fact: I forgot which character's VA it was but she was an actual huge historic military buff who knew everything from guns to military conflicts and of course the tanks.

Anime + tank = masterpiece
Minimal dialog is truly an art form, especially in sports anime. Too many shows seem to act like no one has heard of the sport before and have to explain every little thing in every scene.
Yeah, the only time that really made sense was in Eyeshield 21, because American football was virtually unknown in Japan.
8:03 I don’t why, but I stood up and song as well as soon as the hymn started to play lmao 🤧🤧🤧
Amazing. It is stunning how all these years later we still are drawn back to this anime as there is no other like it.

I was reminded of it by your comment and I think it is indeed true that the Italian soldiers made the best out of nothing and should deserve more of the spotlight.
but just know. everyone loves Anzio, and is the school most likely to be invited to a beach barbecue. 👍🍔🫕

There's literally nothing like GuP imo. Also it's isn't sus, it's cute, has plenty of fun characters, cool tank fights, great music and WW2 references. Nothing more I can ask for. Also Rena Andou is best girl
I loved this anime so much, I rewatch it every 2-3 month since 3 years ago
You should watch it if you haven't.
you can drift a tank. Once. It usually throws a track and warps the road wheels.
When you sung the german panzerlied I literaly cracked up laughing in tears! x'D
AWESOME!! :D
That was "Erika"...
It’s actually insane how accurate not only the tanks but the references are.
8:36 not only its the catchiest one, but its also a real soviet song called "Katyusha" (yes its also the name of that loli )
GuP is the 2nd anime I ever watched.
Its still up there as my all time favourite show, and my most rewatched. I love it so much, its pure brilliance.

without question my favorite anime, i have the complete series on blue ray including the movies and OVAs, its a hidden gem of anime that most people write off as being absurd trash
11:19 HAHAHa That's the most funniest part in this video.
Let me make this clear. Yes, character development is not GuP's strongest suit - but that isn't becuse it lacks character development.
This show is just honestly better with out basic physics
9:06 as an American I can agree with "the more guns the better"
First Rule of a fight: Bring a gun (the bigger, the better...)
Second Rule of a fight: Bring a lot of FRIENDS with GUNS... ;)
one thing worth to mention, is how perfect is GuP due to this combination.
when you aren't a history nerd, history related films might be hard to catch you, or even scenes that are intense with tanks (like a troop facing a tiger I) might not feel as they would when you know about the topic, because you just might see a big car slow as a snail that looks like any other one (something my sister would say).
Girls und Panzer was probably the third anime I watched that got me sold on anime.
First was Sound of the Sky, and second was Strike Witches.
Good choices.
GuP is the only anime i saw have done a huge character development, mostly the Chi-Ha-Tan School
And the sound design was so goooood!

SUPER NICE,
One of the few animes I actively rewatch
I love watching it because it was funny. Yea, it's fantasy but sometimes you just have to enjoy a movie with humor.
I tried to convince them again, and they told me to stop trying to force them to watch it, which would be fair if they hadn't hounded me to watch the entirety of JOJO beginning in part 1 *for 4 YEARS.*
I tried to bring that up, and they simply said that "That's different because JOJO is good" I gave up.
Yeah i hate this kinda guy aswell
They forced their and said theirs are better
Not good fella to hangout in my opinion
How the DUCK GuP is boring

It's the anime that half the War Thunder community curses under their breaths and the other half cheers and celebrates.
(I fall into the latter category, naturally, else I wouldn't be watching this).
10:53 bruh, I died of laughter
This.
