Great video. I had a buddy who was a M-1 driver in the Army for years. One night we were hanging out drinking and I threw on GuP. We watched the first episode and all he said at the end was... ".........What the F&^*?" Then demanded I start the second episode. He found it hilarious.
You failed to actually explain why you think the show itself is "terrible", and just talked about the tanks for the vast majority of the video. It's clear that you value only the tank stuff, which I don't mind honestly. But if you're gonna claim that the show outside of that aspect is terrbibe, at least explain why it is so, which you didn't do. Are we gonna just take your word for it then, that it's bad? It came of to me like you expected the show itself to be the usual bad anime before watching it, and just dimissed everything outside the action. It may not be the deepest of storytelling ever, but I do think personally the plot and characters are pretty dang solid, and it's one of my top favorite anime. I have to say this was a very suface level look on the show, cuz there is a lot more to it beneath the suface, like themes of good sportmanship and tradition vs self-expression. Though to be fair, a lot of that is conveied through visual storytelling, which can be hard to spot at a first viewing.

You don't realize how close you are. This show was a last-minute stand in for another show that was cancelled. If there hadn't been an emergency need to fill that show's time slot this one might never have been produced, so "We need a new anime fast!" is exactly how it started!
The Panzer IV in the show starts as a Ausf. D model, is upgraded to the F2 model, and is then upped to the H model. The inconsistencies can be handwaved away as, well, as you said in the video, Ooarai scraping together whatever they have to upgrade everything because they are poor as hell compared to the other schools. Hence the applique armour plating when they up it to the F2 model. Edit: They refer to it as the H to give a rough approximation of its abilities, armour, etc.
Just finished watching the series and the movies today, honestly a good anime though I was skeptical about the lack of realism at first but after the 3rd episode I stopped caring because TONK COOL
The automotive club did upgrade the engine on their Tiger. And due to its electric nature, there aren't the same rules in place in regards to limiting the type of upgrades, due to more unique nature of the engine. Which is an interesting tidbit that tells us two things. First, that the tank engines, like their armor, are not stock (despite maintaining some of their real life issues) and second, that, like in car racing, there are rules limits in place to keep things "fair". It also provides some in-world justification as to why the tanks aren't as slow as their real world counterparts. The US did have a Firefly. Might even have been two, don't recall exactly how many were sent to the US for evaluation purposes. Between lack of ergonomics, the muzzle-brake/sabot interaction that hindered accuracy, slow rate of fire, logistic concerns, and the performance of the 76mm, the US decided it wasn't interested in the Firefly, and consequently, sent the test vehicle(s) back to the British. So, basically, that school having and using a single Firefly is not wrong, even if it isn't entirely right. Somewhat akin to other tanks (like the Maus) weren't really operationally used, but still existed. And I do like that the reason why the main girls win the fight... that afore mentioned slow rate of fire. I'm guessing that that footage of the Stug (the show one used also being a Finnish version) is from the same museum that has the last remaining BT-42? If so, that could make for an interesting video, due to the crowd funding campaign to restore/build it a cover, how that relates to Girls Und Panzer, and you being Finnish and consequently potentially having unique insight into the tank, as well as easier access to footage of the actual tank.
Funny enough, while the US never fielded fireflies, we were the largest owner of the type. Buying them straight off the factory floor in order to supply the Polish/Czech armored divisions.

That would be the first GuP movie. Yeah there is still a lot of hand-waving & drifting tanks, but the storyline is mostly coherent and does a better job of holdsing your suspension of disbelief for 2-hours..... around the same level of the Russian Т-34 movie I think?

What I can tell after hearing and reading on Forums, reddit and etc about the non realistic behavior of the Tanks in GUP is that these Tanks in the Anime are Rebuilt variants and not actual War Machines. So that means these Tanks were not made during the Wars that also happened in the Anime like in Real Life, they are rather made after the War for the Sole purpose of Senshado - that means that they have these special armor to protect the People inside of the Vehicles. Only the outer hull, as well some components like the Engine are rather exposed to expose them for better fight simulation, and probably to educate the Girls afterwards with maintenance Skills, in case the Tank gets "annihilated". That the Tanks for Senshado already have different armor probably causes them to be more heavy, so the tanks get their own Engines that are far more Powerful than the real tank Engines from the World Wars. They're probably so powerful that they can accelerate the Senshado Tanks much faster than the Real war tanks. Of course that's just an assumption. Many other things in the Anime are far from logic to explain that properly. While there might even exist a Theory for the fired Shells that CAN evade students with some shenanigan-like technology, in case the shells being misfired directly at the Student sticking out of the Tank instead at the tank itself. The only theory I just simply can't explain - no matter how and from which angle I try to see that is the (SPOILER!) Bombardment Scene in GUP Der Film, where the Karl Gerät Artillery started to momb the shit out of Oarai team. They way where Katyusha is casually unharmed while one of Karl Gerät's sells literally hit the ground few meters way from her, while in the next shot another Bombardement yeets 2 Kuromorimine Tanks away like mere Toys is beyond my Understanding. Edit: and yes, thanks to the Senshado-builts, it makes the tanks highly Possible to drift around. Another theory after Watching the Video past 7:30. About Modern Tanks: cold war, as well modern Tanks are not allowed in Senshado. There are few exceptions, such as the use of Karl Gerät in Der Film. But as far the tank had a Real Counterpart, no matter if it was Serial Production or Prototype, the Schools are allowed to Possess them. That's why Kuromorimine possess a Maus Tank, while All Stars from Der Film possess a T28/T95 prototype. More exceptions can be made as far they're not lethal. If it goes to that son of a - the Glasses guy who allowed the Karl Gerät in the first place, it might even possible to use a Gustav Cannon - if it has been equipped with Tank like treads instead of Train Wheels. Also, the Type 10 shown in the Video is not just in Ami Chonos* Possession (*the short haired woman in military Uniform that is the Trainer of Oarai in the first episodes), in little army (idk if 1 or 2) 2 Twin Sisters from the Bellwall Academy (mimics East and West Germany/Berlin) also possessing Privately a Type 10 MBT. They Planned to use it in Senshado, but were prohibited to use it. AND EDIT 2: the Panzer 4 Shown there is - According to the Videogame "Girls und Panzer Dream Tank Match" for PS4 and Nintendo Switch - a Panzer IV Ausf. D. It later is the a Panzer IV Ausf. D (Custom F2) and at last is a Panzer IV Ausf. H. At least that's how all aviable Panzer IV variants you can unlock there are labelled as. And don't worry, they're not just some "errors made by Developers" it has some neat details regarding almost everything in the Game. Even the Event MP Mode sometimes are about the Birthdays of GUP Characters, like Erwin, where you can only drive her Stug III there.

Many years ago, while researching German WWII music, I found a UA-cam video of the Tokyo Philharmonic doing Panzerlied from an anime called Girls und Panzer. Thus at 60+ years of age, I discovered anime and GIrls und Panzer! Instantly fell in love and have watched anime ever since! Gave up my TV because I have anime now. Girls und Panzer is, indeed, my favorite anime.
Regarding the Porsche Tiger's drivetrain: It would absolutely have been possible to cut-out one of the two generators to work on it while it wasn't running, leaving the remaining generator to power the electric motors. Of course, the vehicle would be even more underpowered than usual. To do that would be as simple as flipping a breaker. The drivetrain (I'm sure you know this, but just to clarify) had two generators (powered by petrol engines) connected in parallel to two electric motors which turned the tracks. One generator was fully capable of powering both motors. As I understand it, the idea behind having two smaller engines like this was that if one of the engines were knocked out, the vehicle would not be immediately immobilised.
9:58 It is a Panzer IV D model according to the GuP wiki. It still has the separated driver and machine gunner frontal plate, but has no additional armor. The first version which has a single frontal plate is the Panzer IV F1. The problem with the upgrade process is that they completely left out the frontal plate modification and only focused on the armament. They solved it by just simply calling them Panzer IV D (F2-modification) and Panzer IV D (H-modification), according to the game Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match.

The anime isnt actually that bad and in fact quite good. Ive seen more professional anime reviewers talk about it and they say its good. It is definitely dumb, but its glorious too. The animation isnt bad either - considering the tanks are 3D and cgi they look good, trust me if youve seen other anime with 3d animation youll definitely say GuPs is one of the best. The animation only gets better with Das Finale
I respect your opinion that the M4 Sherman was the best tank of the war, yet I personally think that it can't be said about any tank. For example... The *M4* series, while both a very producable and effective fighting vehicle proved to be not as powerful on longer distance fights, despite dominating urban and tightly spaced warfare, unlike the *Panther*, and despite it being fixed with the Firefly and later variants partially, it'd still lack behind the german tanks like the previously mentioned *Panther* or *Tiger* *Panther* was an excelent fighting force in almost every aspect. It beat the M4 in many ways, in the likes of frontal armor, an overal better gun than most of the M4 variants and sometimes even in speed and mobility, being a marvel of German engineering and one of the actual super projects of the Wermacht which actually worked, being the first tank which could, if you squinted your eyes real hard, be considered a "modern" battle tank, *Tiger* (Tiger I variant) could be called "the greatest tank" of the war by many, but it obviously was not. It had an outstanding gun, utilizing the knowledge German engineers gained with the Flak 88 to its fullest extent, having great range and armor penetration. Its armor also proved to be quite a problem, being almost impenetrable if angled well at a distance, as the Tiger was meant for long range engagements. *T-34*, ah yes. The Soviet "reliable" tank, which was in reality extremly unreliable and... well, let's put it lightly... not the best fighting vehicle. It was dubbed the best by a lot of people because those people only saw it's T-34/85 and T-34/75 variant with the better gun. Spoilers: The T-34 did not do well against German panzers, which were most of the time superior to said tanks, however, the T-34 was amongst some of the most produced and cheapest tanks during WW2, gaining a significant boost to its ranking. *Tiger II* and *IS-2* respectively are the kings of heavy tanks, being impenetrable forts on tracks, capable of raining down hell on any target they saw with their 88mm and 122mm cannon respectively, easilly destroying anything while being understroyable. Unlike the IS-2 tho, the Tiger II failed its role because of the late war German logistical problems and inability to maintain a concistent production or supply line. *IS-1*, *Churchill* and even many other tanks I did not include, just to shorten the comment. However, in short, there's no single best tank of the war, as every side's vehicle had its downsides and upsides. However, in my opinion and almost no bias, I think that if all tanks were used by nations with perfect logistics and the exact same ability to produce and maintain a stable panzer force (Unrealistic and impossible, but that isnt important right now), the Tiger II would dominate the battlefields. The only reason it didn't turn the tide of war was because the war was already lost by 1939 for Hitler and the outcome was unchangable for anyone sane.
I thought the anime aspect was really good. There were these subtle touches everywhere that built up a fascinating society. Also I'm not a "gentleman" :p. The anime has the plot of the standard sports movie, only the sport is live action tank battles. This is possibly the only show that manages to show a military society in an entirely positive light. I have a fan theory though. This takes some place in the future no? I suspect something happened to the gravity of earth where it was somehow lowered by like 30%. That would explain a lot of things. Since this is the future they developed carbon coating so that tank shots can't puncture the metal. It can dent at most.
yup it's better to read it on mangadex since it's updated some manga says complete but don't be fooled some are releasing new chapters and if you're aware about the manga called Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu you better read it on Danboroo since a lot of new chapters has been released that in mangadex hasn't been released. As far as the chapters in mangadex it only has up to chapter 70 but in Danboroo it has been releasing new chapters every Monday sometimes from different days
I'll just admit, this anime is more of a guilty pleasure/anime introduction (it was the first one I ever watched). Yes, it's trash, but if I'm bored and don't want to watch something super serious (Evangelion, etc), it makes for decent light-hearted entertainment or background noise when I'm working on other hobbies.

Honest video. I'd argue that the anime is a bit better than perhaps you seem to feel. It isn't perfect, but the writers clearly understood what they were making and didn't try to make it perfect, but to make it a fun exploration of the tank battle game concept with characters who were largely designed around various tropes. It works, but I agree it works mostly because the attention to the tank battles is surprisingly thorough despite the lack of perfect accuracy. (accuracy would have killed the feel of the whole series.)

I think the panzer 4 variant on the early stages of the show is Ausf D not Ausf E, then they upgrade it later around the pravda episode with an Ausf F-2 not Ausf G (given the different muzzle break).
i couldn't find any mention of the specific model of the early Pz IV in the wiki sadly. As for the F2, like I said in the video, it has the early war muzzle brake which would make it an F2, but it also has the late war applique armour that was only added to the G model of the Pz IV. First by welding on the additional 30mm and later when that became too time consuming the up armouring was done by bolting, like they do in the anime. Either way, neither type was the standard for the F2 making it more an amalgam of the G and F2 @@tanukikobayashi
The show consists of 12 episodes, 2 full OVA episodes; "The Real Anzio battle" and "Alice War", 1 feature film and 4 of 6 planned OVA films. There is also 8 little short OVA's which are just little extra's.

A reminder that you are allowed to make modifications to your tanks and we actively see one of the clubs doing so. The "Tanks Driving Too Fast" Counter doesn't really mean anything in this show. You are also only allowed to use parts and ammunition from licensed Sensha-do stores, so my theory is the use of specialized ammunition that squashes when hitting the inner carbon layering, and a sensor that throws up the white flag if the impact would have taken out the vehicle in reality.
I discovered this anime years ago from my love of tanks and I never looked back. It's my all-time favorite anime, so much so I could possibly write full essays about it, and I really enjoy seeing reviews of it even if I already know everything about it. Cute girls driving tanks from the first half pf the 20th century in a sport. The concept is weird, but the execution was amazing. It's not bad, but instead is incredible. Incredibly niche but Incredibly enjoyable. The greatest gift us tank nerds could ask for in an anime.
this is just my speculation but i think all tank i mean ALL tank on anime Girls und Panzer is upgraded like the engines and more because who tf whant to use original tank engines (except on real life), if you use original tank engines it will takes too much fuel and the original tank enggine is too hot, and by the way, Tiger P on Girls und Panzer is get's a upgraded enggine and it can go so fast but only for a second and if the enggine used more than a 10 second the enggines will explode
I'd suspect that that is the reason they use, although I'm not sure if it's ever explicitly mentioned and even if it is, that reasoning doesn't really hold up to close scrutiny either. The two main issues being the space available for the new engine, since size is everything in tanks and the ones in the show do share the dimensions of the real things, sure you could shove a small gas turbine into a pz4 (I think?) But even that wouldn't push the tank to such speeds. The second issue is the mechanical failures, if you made reproductions of all the parts with modern materials, why replicate the historical failures as well? It just doesn't add up. Don't get me wrong, the speed isn't really a problem to me personally at least and if anything it makes the battles far more dynamic, nobody wants to watch them drive to positions for 3 hours before the battle. But I was specifically asked to review GuP in light of the historical tanks so I just had to bring it up 😅
Btw I'm fairly certain the Pz. IV at the begining is an Ausf. D. As for the upgrades, some older Pz. IV's were upgraded to the later models in real life. Also, ookko suomesta? Edit: Just watched to the end, seems so.
I'm still not quite sure which PZ 4 the first one is, I did do some more research after the video to try and figure it out and let's just say that until the F2 the Pz IV models are a bit of a mess 😂 also, joo Suomesta

@@addedcheese update: few weeks ago I asked my friend who is an anime weeb and he told me that any big anime website has it. He recommended one to me and I then watched the whole show of what I could find on there. Still waiting for any site to have das final 4 though. This show was my first anime and it was very good as a WarThunder and Hoi4 player. Final review 10/10. (Those bathroom segments and some of the OVAs where quite weird but I am willing to over look them)

As an avid WarThunder and Hearts of Iron 4 player- 10/10 still waiting on Das Final 4 to release on American platforms though. (Although the first 4 ovas and some scenes were a little uncomfortable I am willing to ignore them)

I wouldn't say the anime is bad, because it really depends on which lens you are judging it with. With the lens of a serious story and great storytelling, comparing it to the best of the best that anime has to offer on that side of things, yeah, it's bad. But with the lens of "Is this a stupid amount of dumb fun while still having memorable moments and characters, and a story that, while very cliché, does actually work for what this show is supposed to be?", I think it passes with flying colours. I've seen people who don't particularly care all that much about tanks have fun watching it, and I think that makes it a good anime. It's not a masterpiece, it's not one of the greats that everyone should watch, but if you want something light and ridiculous just to have fun, it's definitely a good one to put on your screen. But I might be biased. It was in fact my very first anime. I wasn't convinced that anime, in general, would be my thing, until I stumbled upon a scene of this one (specifically Pravda singing Katyusha) and I thought "This looks weird but I'm kinda curious now". I wasn't particularly interested in tanks at the time either. I was just intrigued by the concept. And this anime managed to make me both interested in watching more anime and learn more about tanks. I think that, if the anime was actually terrible, if the anime was incredibly dull and boring, it wouldn't have managed to do that to me. So even if it's not great from a storytelling standpoint, it's absolutely fun and holds a special place in my heart.

Worked with the Army, Navy and Marines when I was in the Air Force and from my perspective the Army and Navy where what you'd expect and easy to get along with. The Marines though... from some of the ones I've met its a wonder how they can operate something as complex as a tank.
Cool thing about the Firefly, in the Girls und Panzer game Sanders offers to sell St. Gloriana a Firefly pointing out its half and half valid for both of them.

The problem with the Tiger P WAS NOT THE ELECTRIC DRIVE! It was the poor steering, bad ground dispersion. In addition the Tiger I H was easier to produce. Watch ConeOfArc’s video on it

Okay, the Sherman Tank, was a pretty fast tank. As for drifting. I've seen several video's on UA-cam of tanks "Drifting" both on cement and ice. So it could happen. Yes I love the series and I do know a far bit about WW2 tanks. But it is just an anime. Oh, and the Sherman could do 24 to 29 mph, depending on terrain. Pretty fast for something that big.
yes the shermans were pretty fast and the pz-4 while not fast wasn't super slow either. It's just that the tanks in the show behave and move more like modern MBTs, it's especially noticeable with the Churchill and Matilda's in the show, or well.... the maus. As for the drifting, it can be done with a tank, if you have specific surfaces, ice and smooth and often wet concrete being the best options (it won't still be a fast and furious drift like in the show) But to pull it off you need a tanks that is relatively close to the ground unless you want to risk tipping over and has a good power to weight ratio. The soviet T-series being the most common one that people do it in, but most modern MBTs can do it, if you are prepared to fuck up the tracks. if memory serves there is a mock up panther built on a t-55 chassis that they do very small drift with in a museum somewhere in Poland. That, at least as far as I know, is the oldest tank chassis that can drift. Not sure if it has the original engine tho.
NO idea why the War Thunder clips used in the video got all grainy and I had to censor the Finnish StuG 3 since we used a version of the swastika, not the German one, but UA-cam still said no to it.

You failed to actually explain why you think the show itself is "terrible", and just talked about the tanks for the vast majority of the video. It's clear that you value only the tank stuff, which I don't mind honestly. But if you're gonna claim that the show outside of that aspect is terrbibe, at least explain why it is so, which you didn't do. Are we gonna just take your word for it then, that it's bad? It came of to me like you expected the show itself to be the usual bad anime before watching it, and just dimissed everything outside the action. It may not be the deepest of storytelling ever, but I do think personally the plot and characters are pretty dang solid, and it's one of my top favorite anime. I have to say this was a very suface level look on the show, cuz there is a lot more to it beneath the suface, like themes of good sportmanship and tradition vs self-expression. Though to be fair, a lot of that is conveied through visual storytelling, which can be hard to spot at a first viewing.

@@benpurcell4935they went further. Some of scenes in the movie were inspired by construction taking place in oorai. So you could watch the movie where the town was being blown up then walk outside to see those exact buildings being repaired with signs saying it was from tank damage.
It's a very lovely town all by itself, but the anime stuff adds a fun charm. Recomend a visit, there's a GuP cafe in the marine tower

You don't realize how close you are. This show was a last-minute stand in for another show that was cancelled. If there hadn't been an emergency need to fill that show's time slot this one might never have been produced, so "We need a new anime fast!" is exactly how it started!

The Panzer IV in the show starts as a Ausf. D model, is upgraded to the F2 model, and is then upped to the H model. The inconsistencies can be handwaved away as, well, as you said in the video, Ooarai scraping together whatever they have to upgrade everything because they are poor as hell compared to the other schools. Hence the applique armour plating when they up it to the F2 model.
Edit: They refer to it as the H to give a rough approximation of its abilities, armour, etc.
Just finished watching the series and the movies today, honestly a good anime though I was skeptical about the lack of realism at first but after the 3rd episode I stopped caring because TONK COOL
The automotive club did upgrade the engine on their Tiger. And due to its electric nature, there aren't the same rules in place in regards to limiting the type of upgrades, due to more unique nature of the engine. Which is an interesting tidbit that tells us two things. First, that the tank engines, like their armor, are not stock (despite maintaining some of their real life issues) and second, that, like in car racing, there are rules limits in place to keep things "fair". It also provides some in-world justification as to why the tanks aren't as slow as their real world counterparts.
The US did have a Firefly. Might even have been two, don't recall exactly how many were sent to the US for evaluation purposes. Between lack of ergonomics, the muzzle-brake/sabot interaction that hindered accuracy, slow rate of fire, logistic concerns, and the performance of the 76mm, the US decided it wasn't interested in the Firefly, and consequently, sent the test vehicle(s) back to the British. So, basically, that school having and using a single Firefly is not wrong, even if it isn't entirely right. Somewhat akin to other tanks (like the Maus) weren't really operationally used, but still existed. And I do like that the reason why the main girls win the fight... that afore mentioned slow rate of fire.
I'm guessing that that footage of the Stug (the show one used also being a Finnish version) is from the same museum that has the last remaining BT-42? If so, that could make for an interesting video, due to the crowd funding campaign to restore/build it a cover, how that relates to Girls Und Panzer, and you being Finnish and consequently potentially having unique insight into the tank, as well as easier access to footage of the actual tank.
Funny enough, while the US never fielded fireflies, we were the largest owner of the type. Buying them straight off the factory floor in order to supply the Polish/Czech armored divisions.

That would be the first GuP movie. Yeah there is still a lot of hand-waving & drifting tanks, but the storyline is mostly coherent and does a better job of holdsing your suspension of disbelief for 2-hours..... around the same level of the Russian Т-34 movie I think?

It has some of the same character designers as GuP (the creator even drew the art for the GuP BluRay boxes)
But it goes much more off the deep end
What I can tell after hearing and reading on Forums, reddit and etc about the non realistic behavior of the Tanks in GUP is that these Tanks in the Anime are Rebuilt variants and not actual War Machines. So that means these Tanks were not made during the Wars that also happened in the Anime like in Real Life, they are rather made after the War for the Sole purpose of Senshado - that means that they have these special armor to protect the People inside of the Vehicles. Only the outer hull, as well some components like the Engine are rather exposed to expose them for better fight simulation, and probably to educate the Girls afterwards with maintenance Skills, in case the Tank gets "annihilated".
That the Tanks for Senshado already have different armor probably causes them to be more heavy, so the tanks get their own Engines that are far more Powerful than the real tank Engines from the World Wars. They're probably so powerful that they can accelerate the Senshado Tanks much faster than the Real war tanks.
Of course that's just an assumption. Many other things in the Anime are far from logic to explain that properly. While there might even exist a Theory for the fired Shells that CAN evade students with some shenanigan-like technology, in case the shells being misfired directly at the Student sticking out of the Tank instead at the tank itself.
The only theory I just simply can't explain - no matter how and from which angle I try to see that is the (SPOILER!)
Bombardment Scene in GUP Der Film, where the Karl Gerät Artillery started to momb the shit out of Oarai team. They way where Katyusha is casually unharmed while one of Karl Gerät's sells literally hit the ground few meters way from her, while in the next shot another Bombardement yeets 2 Kuromorimine Tanks away like mere Toys is beyond my Understanding.
Edit: and yes, thanks to the Senshado-builts, it makes the tanks highly Possible to drift around. Another theory after Watching the Video past 7:30.
About Modern Tanks: cold war, as well modern Tanks are not allowed in Senshado. There are few exceptions, such as the use of Karl Gerät in Der Film. But as far the tank had a Real Counterpart, no matter if it was Serial Production or Prototype, the Schools are allowed to Possess them. That's why Kuromorimine possess a Maus Tank, while All Stars from Der Film possess a T28/T95 prototype. More exceptions can be made as far they're not lethal. If it goes to that son of a - the Glasses guy who allowed the Karl Gerät in the first place, it might even possible to use a Gustav Cannon - if it has been equipped with Tank like treads instead of Train Wheels.
Also, the Type 10 shown in the Video is not just in Ami Chonos* Possession (*the short haired woman in military Uniform that is the Trainer of Oarai in the first episodes), in little army (idk if 1 or 2) 2 Twin Sisters from the Bellwall Academy (mimics East and West Germany/Berlin) also possessing Privately a Type 10 MBT. They Planned to use it in Senshado, but were prohibited to use it.
AND EDIT 2:
the Panzer 4 Shown there is - According to the Videogame "Girls und Panzer Dream Tank Match" for PS4 and Nintendo Switch - a Panzer IV Ausf. D. It later is the a Panzer IV Ausf. D (Custom F2) and at last is a Panzer IV Ausf. H.
At least that's how all aviable Panzer IV variants you can unlock there are labelled as.
And don't worry, they're not just some "errors made by Developers" it has some neat details regarding almost everything in the Game. Even the Event MP Mode sometimes are about the Birthdays of GUP Characters, like Erwin, where you can only drive her Stug III there.
The Panzer IV starts off as the Ausf D
Mid way into the anime it's converted into F2 Spec and then in the later parts an Ausf H
And it's actually not that weird for old variants to be upgraded to a specific spec in the Eastern Front, Ausf F2s would be also upgraded in the field into Ausf Gs and said Ausf Gs would be upgraded to Ausf Hs

Many years ago, while researching German WWII music, I found a UA-cam video of the Tokyo Philharmonic doing Panzerlied from an anime called Girls und Panzer. Thus at 60+ years of age, I discovered anime and GIrls und Panzer! Instantly fell in love and have watched anime ever since! Gave up my TV because I have anime now. Girls und Panzer is, indeed, my favorite anime.

Regarding the Porsche Tiger's drivetrain: It would absolutely have been possible to cut-out one of the two generators to work on it while it wasn't running, leaving the remaining generator to power the electric motors. Of course, the vehicle would be even more underpowered than usual.
To do that would be as simple as flipping a breaker.
The drivetrain (I'm sure you know this, but just to clarify) had two generators (powered by petrol engines) connected in parallel to two electric motors which turned the tracks. One generator was fully capable of powering both motors. As I understand it, the idea behind having two smaller engines like this was that if one of the engines were knocked out, the vehicle would not be immediately immobilised.

9:58 It is a Panzer IV D model according to the GuP wiki. It still has the separated driver and machine gunner frontal plate, but has no additional armor. The first version which has a single frontal plate is the Panzer IV F1. The problem with the upgrade process is that they completely left out the frontal plate modification and only focused on the armament. They solved it by just simply calling them Panzer IV D (F2-modification) and Panzer IV D (H-modification), according to the game Girls und Panzer: Dream Tank Match.

The anime isnt actually that bad and in fact quite good. Ive seen more professional anime reviewers talk about it and they say its good. It is definitely dumb, but its glorious too. The animation isnt bad either - considering the tanks are 3D and cgi they look good, trust me if youve seen other anime with 3d animation youll definitely say GuPs is one of the best.

I respect your opinion that the M4 Sherman was the best tank of the war, yet I personally think that it can't be said about any tank.
For example...
The *M4* series, while both a very producable and effective fighting vehicle proved to be not as powerful on longer distance fights, despite dominating urban and tightly spaced warfare, unlike the *Panther*, and despite it being fixed with the Firefly and later variants partially, it'd still lack behind the german tanks like the previously mentioned *Panther* or *Tiger*
*Panther* was an excelent fighting force in almost every aspect. It beat the M4 in many ways, in the likes of frontal armor, an overal better gun than most of the M4 variants and sometimes even in speed and mobility, being a marvel of German engineering and one of the actual super projects of the Wermacht which actually worked, being the first tank which could, if you squinted your eyes real hard, be considered a "modern" battle tank,
*Tiger* (Tiger I variant) could be called "the greatest tank" of the war by many, but it obviously was not. It had an outstanding gun, utilizing the knowledge German engineers gained with the Flak 88 to its fullest extent, having great range and armor penetration. Its armor also proved to be quite a problem, being almost impenetrable if angled well at a distance, as the Tiger was meant for long range engagements.
*T-34*, ah yes. The Soviet "reliable" tank, which was in reality extremly unreliable and... well, let's put it lightly... not the best fighting vehicle. It was dubbed the best by a lot of people because those people only saw it's T-34/85 and T-34/75 variant with the better gun. Spoilers: The T-34 did not do well against German panzers, which were most of the time superior to said tanks, however, the T-34 was amongst some of the most produced and cheapest tanks during WW2, gaining a significant boost to its ranking.
*Tiger II* and *IS-2* respectively are the kings of heavy tanks, being impenetrable forts on tracks, capable of raining down hell on any target they saw with their 88mm and 122mm cannon respectively, easilly destroying anything while being understroyable. Unlike the IS-2 tho, the Tiger II failed its role because of the late war German logistical problems and inability to maintain a concistent production or supply line.
*IS-1*, *Churchill* and even many other tanks I did not include, just to shorten the comment. However, in short, there's no single best tank of the war, as every side's vehicle had its downsides and upsides. However, in my opinion and almost no bias, I think that if all tanks were used by nations with perfect logistics and the exact same ability to produce and maintain a stable panzer force (Unrealistic and impossible, but that isnt important right now), the Tiger II would dominate the battlefields. The only reason it didn't turn the tide of war was because the war was already lost by 1939 for Hitler and the outcome was unchangable for anyone sane.

I thought the anime aspect was really good. There were these subtle touches everywhere that built up a fascinating society. Also I'm not a "gentleman" :p. The anime has the plot of the standard sports movie, only the sport is live action tank battles. This is possibly the only show that manages to show a military society in an entirely positive light. I have a fan theory though. This takes some place in the future no? I suspect something happened to the gravity of earth where it was somehow lowered by like 30%. That would explain a lot of things. Since this is the future they developed carbon coating so that tank shots can't puncture the metal. It can dent at most.

yup it's better to read it on mangadex since it's updated some manga says complete but don't be fooled some are releasing new chapters and if you're aware about the manga called Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu you better read it on Danboroo since a lot of new chapters has been released that in mangadex hasn't been released. As far as the chapters in mangadex it only has up to chapter 70 but in Danboroo it has been releasing new chapters every Monday sometimes from different days

I'll just admit, this anime is more of a guilty pleasure/anime introduction (it was the first one I ever watched). Yes, it's trash, but if I'm bored and don't want to watch something super serious (Evangelion, etc), it makes for decent light-hearted entertainment or background noise when I'm working on other hobbies.

Honest video. I'd argue that the anime is a bit better than perhaps you seem to feel. It isn't perfect, but the writers clearly understood what they were making and didn't try to make it perfect, but to make it a fun exploration of the tank battle game concept with characters who were largely designed around various tropes. It works, but I agree it works mostly because the attention to the tank battles is surprisingly thorough despite the lack of perfect accuracy. (accuracy would have killed the feel of the whole series.)

I think the panzer 4 variant on the early stages of the show is Ausf D not Ausf E, then they upgrade it later around the pravda episode with an Ausf F-2 not Ausf G (given the different muzzle break).

As for the F2, like I said in the video, it has the early war muzzle brake which would make it an F2, but it also has the late war applique armour that was only added to the G model of the Pz IV. First by welding on the additional 30mm and later when that became too time consuming the up armouring was done by bolting, like they do in the anime. Either way, neither type was the standard for the F2 making it more an amalgam of the G and F2

A reminder that you are allowed to make modifications to your tanks and we actively see one of the clubs doing so. The "Tanks Driving Too Fast" Counter doesn't really mean anything in this show. You are also only allowed to use parts and ammunition from licensed Sensha-do stores, so my theory is the use of specialized ammunition that squashes when hitting the inner carbon layering, and a sensor that throws up the white flag if the impact would have taken out the vehicle in reality.

I discovered this anime years ago from my love of tanks and I never looked back. It's my all-time favorite anime, so much so I could possibly write full essays about it, and I really enjoy seeing reviews of it even if I already know everything about it. Cute girls driving tanks from the first half pf the 20th century in a sport. The concept is weird, but the execution was amazing.
It's not bad, but instead is incredible. Incredibly niche but Incredibly enjoyable. The greatest gift us tank nerds could ask for in an anime.
this is just my speculation but i think all tank i mean ALL tank on anime Girls und Panzer is upgraded like the engines and more because who tf whant to use original tank engines (except on real life), if you use original tank engines it will takes too much fuel and the original tank enggine is too hot, and by the way, Tiger P on Girls und Panzer is get's a upgraded enggine and it can go so fast but only for a second and if the enggine used more than a 10 second the enggines will explode
I'd suspect that that is the reason they use, although I'm not sure if it's ever explicitly mentioned and even if it is, that reasoning doesn't really hold up to close scrutiny either. The two main issues being the space available for the new engine, since size is everything in tanks and the ones in the show do share the dimensions of the real things, sure you could shove a small gas turbine into a pz4 (I think?) But even that wouldn't push the tank to such speeds.
The second issue is the mechanical failures, if you made reproductions of all the parts with modern materials, why replicate the historical failures as well? It just doesn't add up.
Don't get me wrong, the speed isn't really a problem to me personally at least and if anything it makes the battles far more dynamic, nobody wants to watch them drive to positions for 3 hours before the battle. But I was specifically asked to review GuP in light of the historical tanks so I just had to bring it up 😅
Btw I'm fairly certain the Pz. IV at the begining is an Ausf. D.
As for the upgrades, some older Pz. IV's were upgraded to the later models in real life.

@@addedcheese update: few weeks ago I asked my friend who is an anime weeb and he told me that any big anime website has it. He recommended one to me and I then watched the whole show of what I could find on there. Still waiting for any site to have das final 4 though. This show was my first anime and it was very good as a WarThunder and Hoi4 player. Final review 10/10. (Those bathroom segments and some of the OVAs where quite weird but I am willing to over look them)

As an avid WarThunder and Hearts of Iron 4 player- 10/10 still waiting on Das Final 4 to release on American platforms though. (Although the first 4 ovas and some scenes were a little uncomfortable I am willing to ignore them)

I wouldn't say the anime is bad, because it really depends on which lens you are judging it with. With the lens of a serious story and great storytelling, comparing it to the best of the best that anime has to offer on that side of things, yeah, it's bad. But with the lens of "Is this a stupid amount of dumb fun while still having memorable moments and characters, and a story that, while very cliché, does actually work for what this show is supposed to be?", I think it passes with flying colours. I've seen people who don't particularly care all that much about tanks have fun watching it, and I think that makes it a good anime.
It's not a masterpiece, it's not one of the greats that everyone should watch, but if you want something light and ridiculous just to have fun, it's definitely a good one to put on your screen.
But I might be biased. It was in fact my very first anime. I wasn't convinced that anime, in general, would be my thing, until I stumbled upon a scene of this one (specifically Pravda singing Katyusha) and I thought "This looks weird but I'm kinda curious now". I wasn't particularly interested in tanks at the time either. I was just intrigued by the concept. And this anime managed to make me both interested in watching more anime and learn more about tanks. I think that, if the anime was actually terrible, if the anime was incredibly dull and boring, it wouldn't have managed to do that to me. So even if it's not great from a storytelling standpoint, it's absolutely fun and holds a special place in my heart.
It's such a bad anime, I watch it every year binge style....

Worked with the Army, Navy and Marines when I was in the Air Force and from my perspective the Army and Navy where what you'd expect and easy to get along with. The Marines though... from some of the ones I've met its a wonder how they can operate something as complex as a tank.

Girls und Panzer is such a guilty pleasure. It shouldn't be as good as it is. I think what sells it is that it's literally an anime fangirling over tanks. It's our inner minds personified lol. I love the show and movies
Okay, the Sherman Tank, was a pretty fast tank. As for drifting. I've seen several video's on UA-cam of tanks "Drifting" both on cement and ice. So it could happen. Yes I love the series and I do know a far bit about WW2 tanks. But it is just an anime. Oh, and the Sherman could do 24 to 29 mph, depending on terrain. Pretty fast for something that big.
yes the shermans were pretty fast and the pz-4 while not fast wasn't super slow either. It's just that the tanks in the show behave and move more like modern MBTs, it's especially noticeable with the Churchill and Matilda's in the show, or well.... the maus.
As for the drifting, it can be done with a tank, if you have specific surfaces, ice and smooth and often wet concrete being the best options (it won't still be a fast and furious drift like in the show) But to pull it off you need a tanks that is relatively close to the ground unless you want to risk tipping over and has a good power to weight ratio. The soviet T-series being the most common one that people do it in, but most modern MBTs can do it, if you are prepared to fuck up the tracks.
if memory serves there is a mock up panther built on a t-55 chassis that they do very small drift with in a museum somewhere in Poland. That, at least as far as I know, is the oldest tank chassis that can drift. Not sure if it has the original engine tho.
