Peter Case and Paul Collins were in the same band circa 1976-77 along with Jack Lee---it was the Nerves. Paul was the drummer, and Peter was the bassist!
That's Paul's brother Patrick on lead guitar. Original guitarist Larry Whitman had already left. Larry had a much better sound and was a really good guitarist. He died in 1997. I met Paul in Campbell Ca in 1987. Their first album ranks up there with the best of them. I honestly think that they would have been bigger but came out around the time of The Knack and took a back seat to the Knack's fame.
The Knack's first album got much more publicity by Capitol Records, the lead guitarist and drummer were both well known on the L.A. music scene, and the songs were a little more 'bluesy' with lyrics that leaned risqué & misogynistic that also helped create a lot of buzz at that time. The (Paul Collins) Beat had a little more of the 'power pop' vibe that was reminiscent of the 1960s to me. Great live band, I saw them a few times around Los Angeles. They were one of those bands I would have loved to see evolve over a few albums worth of songs.
One of the greatest artists and he’s so underrated… 😢
I see him every time he comes to Seattle he's been rocknroll hall of fame material for years. "Play it Loud". Him and Peter Case ....HOF😆💚👍
