I saw them a few times around Los Angeles back in the 1980s, I think Paul's based in Spain now? They put out some very catchy-sounding music back in those days and I still have their first album. Love the video, it looks like they just set up 'wherever' on random Hollywood street corners and cranked out some air-guitar moves.
It’s a real shame this band doesn’t get more recognition outside of power pop nerd fandom. I couldn’t believe how good that album was the first time I listened to it, and I had never even heard of them until maybe 15 years ago.
@@geocs5895 I saw them there too. In 1987. Man, what a small world. We got to talk with Paul for awhile. It was a killer show. Saw them at a club in San Fran also.
They were amazing. Saw them live in 1979. "The Knack" had Casablanca Records behind them, but were not nearly as good. So.... where is "The Knack" today?" Uff. Loved The Beat. Their first album - "The Beat" - one of the best EVER.
Magnificent! I love The Beat (one of the most perfect debut albums in history). I saw them back in he mid-80s and then again about 6 years ago, Paul and his band were still incredible, it was just pure rock and roll Heaven.
All due respect - I think Paul's former bandmates in The Nerves -Peter Case and Jack Lee - would respectfully disagree about the Beat's claim to that term. Since that band's formation predates The Beat by about 5 years. Not to mention the (surviving) members of Badfinger, Big Star, The Flamin' Groovies, Blondie and The Raspberries.
No no pound per pound Paul Collins Beat wears the crown . Sure Pete T might of coined the term in 67, but nobody had an entire record both sides with every song a hit. a hit in my ears and feet. Yes The Raspberries and others that came before had powered the pop ,especially The F Groovies, but PCB just wrapped it all up and delivered quick ,easy and delicious .
@@desiramone5052 I wasn't saying anything about musical quality. OP was making the claim that PCB was around "before Power Pop was even a term" wich is demonstrably false
I feel Collins Beat epitomizes Power Pop rock better than any band however all the others bands mentioned started the genre...its a quirky genre that is limiting and confusing...it crossed into so many other turfs could be post punk punk new wave hard and pop rock! Leave it to Townshend!
Another classic. Amazing. Album has Rock N Roll Girl, Don't Wait Up For Me, Walking out on Love, and You won't be happy. That's four classics on the album plus one other, super solid, super tight (structure) superb power pop song, Different Kind of Girl. Amazing writing, Paul Collins !
A friend of mine in AZ covered many of their songs and claimed them as his own :) Not long ago he was able to tell that story to Paul Collins and was allowed to sing a number o stage with them. Great sound!!
Wow……sooooo many elements that transition to that next level of rock are in this song…….tones, chord progressions, technique, production……how fin cool is this tune???????
AWESOME VIDEO!!! I can attest that he has still got it, one of the hardest working rockers out there and still carrying the power pop torch that he lit many years ago. Keep it up Paul. Matt

High school 1980...great times and memories...chasing girls in cars😢...I'm old.😅 But they can't take the memory away😅
Saw them twice in the 80's. One of my favorite bands. Definitely deserved more recognition
Saw them at The Bodega in Campbell, CA. They kicked some serious ass!
@@geocs5895 I saw them there too. In 1987. Man, what a small world. We got to talk with Paul for awhile. It was a killer show. Saw them at a club in San Fran also.
Saw them at the Calistoga fairgrounds in the early 80s great show.

Played this album over and over back then. Great stuff.

L'énergie de ce type-là est juste incroyable ! Tellement en avance...
i plasyed this cassette thousands of times. my kids grew up to this in the car. singing back up hahahahahaha.
Landmark Music Video for 1979 of Early New Wave Classic ( 2 years before MTV made Music Videos a thing).
Its a shame that Paul and The Beat didn't get more acclaim. They were a strong group and cranked this stuff out way before Power Pop was even a term.

The first registered use of the term Power Pop was in 1967 by Pete Townshend, describing the Who’s then newest single «Pictures of Lily»

This is the band that SHOULD have made it big... instead of the Knack!
Absolutely agree!!!

The Jam w/ Paul Collins Beat @ Park West in Chicago, was easily the loudest show I'd ever seen up til then.
Great song.....
Great album.

Broken string at 2:16!
My fave song by the Beat. Would have made a great cover song for All Time Low in their early days.
The drummer smacked that foo in the face
