Sausalito Summernight is one of my all-time favorite songs. For YEARS, I thought it was the Steve Miller Band and I use to scourge the tape/CD stores for it. This was before the Internet. It was until around 2005 when I bought a car with satellite radio that when I looked at the information screen and saw it was this rather unknown band named "Diesel," life was complete.
I had forgotten all about the ill-fated musical career of Lisa Hartman. I love the Solid Gold dancers choreography behind Janie Fricke! Great stuff... thanks.
Brandon...nice job picking the early 80's as a theme for lost music. I would love to see more coverage of this particular era in terms of music type books, video's and movies. The early 1980's musically were very much a change era that included the appearance of the most significant force in music--the rock video. Acts that were not able to breakthrough in a major way finally did so like the J Geils Band while unknown acts with a sense of comedic flair like Men At Work were over night sensations. We see so little analysis of this era of great musical change--the early 80's--and I have no explanation for it. I do know as a music fan it was a magical time as rock video's blew the doors off the music scene. And one more thing about the early 80's, we had acts like Player ("Baby Come Back") and Cliff Richard ("Devil Woman") have 70's success in the U.S. but fizz out in the early 80's. Rock historians have ignored this era and I suppose it is only a matter of time till it is properly reviewed. Anyway, good job, Brandon! Enjoyed the "Lost Hits of the Early 80's."
If you've seen "The Running Man" and wondered where they got the idea for the dancers, here it is. Solid Gold. Kinda mind blowing how much choreography and costuming went into this show.
Thank You Billboard, for giving us these lost hits. Because I lived in Germany during the 80's, many of these "lost hits" were actually big hits on the continent. Thanks for bringing them back again.
Josie Cotton - Johnny are you queer was on the Valley Girl soundtrack (she appeared in the movie as the prom band) Donnie Iris -Ah Leah Paul Carrack - I need you The only 3 songs on this list I even want to remember the rest was what I avoided in the early 80's. lol
None of these songs stand the test of time except for “What Do All the People Know” by the Monroes. One of the best new wave rock songs of the 1980’s and still played today in NYC!
I almost forgot about "Johnny Are You Queer". It brings back memories of watching the "Valley Girl" movie and hearing it for the first time. I think that's also the first time I saw Nicolas Cage.
Some Behind the Music trivia. Lisa Hartman became an actress, and eventually married country superstar Clint Black. Amy Holland married her songs writer and producer, Mr Yacht Rock himself, Michael McDonald. Donnie Iris was a two hit wonder. He was the lead singer of the Jaggerz. Best known for their 1970 hit “The Rapper.”
Hid'in From Love.. Never heard the Lisa Heartman cover before. But in Canada, the Bryan Adams original is still a staple on a lot of classic rock stations.
There are a lot of songs on this clip I've never heard of before. And the songs I did hear don't recall who sang them. 1:50-Ah, the "Solid Gold dancers"
We can salvage Diesel with Sausalito Summer nights and Little River Band You are driving out of my mind those were good songs and were played on the radios .3 .
It's on the "Valley Girl" soundtrack, along with Modern English's "I Melt with You" and The Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away." Men at Work's "Who Can It Be Now?" is on my copy as well, although Wikipedia says that song has been removed from the special edition of the film on DVD.
Best parts of this video: 3:19 - 3:54, 4:31 - 6:00 Anyone else like who was impressed with the song by The Monroes but was jarred at how they looked? Where the heck did they come from? The synth influence really made the difference.
rcoveyduc If that song was made.today, the SJW wackjobs would be tearing everything up until the singer was thrown in jail, the song was taken off the radio, all copies of it burned, and a letter of apology written to anyone with any possible hurt feelings.
*I still have Johnny are you queer on a 45. Everyone always gave me records that they thought were rejects, and some have never been opened. I've a lot of records and tons of cassettes, but the amount of 8 tracks I have puts those numbers combined to shame.* _Great video. Thanks for taking the time to put these together._
I remember I was shocked the first time I saw the Monroes. They look like country/pop dudes. I pictured them looking like Flock of Seagulls or something.
3:18 I have been trying to identify one song for DECADES. Heard it maybe three times in my life, never in a place where I could hear it properly... It could only be described as 'Steve Miller gone disco.' NOBODY could figure it out, even when I would try to sing "I don't want mustard on my weiner!" THANK YOU!!!
Cliff Richard has sold 250 million records worldwide. An absolute superstar.
Salt in my tears is one of my favorite songs.
Little River Band had so many great songs.

That guitar riff by Diesel in Sausalito Summernights is fantastic!
Sausalito Summernight!!! Yes!
My favorite TRUE One-Hit Wonder song.
Now this is music!!!
Diesel - Sausalito summer nights
Donnie Iris - Ah Leah
If you've seen "The Running Man" and wondered where they got the idea for the dancers, here it is. Solid Gold. Kinda mind blowing how much choreography and costuming went into this show.
Martin Briley was a great talent, love Salt In My Tears!!!
sucks
i wish they had #2 and 3 of the volumes. im always interested in hearing the underground hits from the 80s
Thank You Billboard, for giving us these lost hits. Because I lived in Germany during the 80's, many of these "lost hits" were actually big hits on the continent. Thanks for bringing them back again.
Josie Cotton - Johnny are you queer was on the Valley Girl soundtrack (she appeared in the movie as the prom band)

how do I survive"" is a great song.. should have been bigger..
The Solid Gold Dancers were so frikkin' hot.
Reminds me on "Running Man" :-D
Not one Trigglypuff in the bunch.
I bet now they don't look near as good.
Caught them every weekend :)
Angel Medina yeah and most of them are pushing 60 now
Salt in My Tears is a classic
Great work, keep it up, you have pulled up songs that I haven't heard since high school.
I almost forgot about "Johnny Are You Queer". It brings back memories of watching the "Valley Girl" movie and hearing it for the first time. I think that's also the first time I saw Nicolas Cage.
Me too! So cute then, cute couple! ♥
Gotta love all of the old Solid Gold footage!
A few great songs (Diesel, for example)... a pant load of songs I suddenly remembered why I forgot...
Just curious - How many of these have the Solid Gold Dancers in the background?
Stuart not enough
Some Behind the Music trivia. Lisa Hartman became an actress, and eventually married country superstar Clint Black. Amy Holland married her songs writer and producer, Mr Yacht Rock himself, Michael McDonald. Donnie Iris was a two hit wonder. He was the lead singer of the Jaggerz. Best known for their 1970 hit “The Rapper.”
wow! I had no idea Donnie Iris was the singer for the Jaggerz, I did learn something today!
Donnie Iris also had another hit with Love Is Like A Rock back in 1981.
Hid'in From Love.. Never heard the Lisa Heartman cover before. But in Canada, the Bryan Adams original is still a staple on a lot of classic rock stations.
Hey Brandon...totally appreciating these volumes - is there no #3?
8:59 Is that Hank Asaria?
LOVE the Little River Band and Teena Marie!
Yea Teena Marie singing I Need Your Loving on American Bandstand
Sorry for my poor english. I heard these sort of songs, while I was on hold. I was on there for a long time.
God, these songs took me back!!
AH, THE MONROES! I love that song!
There are a lot of songs on this clip I've never heard of before. And the songs I did hear don't recall who sang them.
1:50-Ah, the "Solid Gold dancers"
Out of curiosity, whatever happened to part 3 of these videos? It goes from part 2 to part 4. Was a part 3 never done?
Ah leah! Has never been a forgotten hit ,it's still inheavy rotation in northeast ohio!
I never knew exactly how to find this song.. title or artist...I was amazed to find it here!! Great song!!
Cleveland is the heart and home of rock n roll! Love or not it's true!
And Donnie Iris still plays live and can still hit every note. Still has the scream also. A Pittsburg and Cleveland favorite.
I saw Donnie Iris open for Hall & Oates. He was awesome!!
Marc Arcoria Huey Lewis !
I don't consider Ah Leah by Donnie Iris a lost hit, I love that song.
Some of these could have stayed lost
We can salvage Diesel with Sausalito Summer nights and Little River Band You are driving out of my mind those were good songs and were played on the radios
.3
.
Looks like everybody was on Solid Gold back then.
Cocaine and solid gold.
I noticed that too
What happened to Volume 3??
And 2..
I watched that one a few months ago. I have a feeling they're getting removed due to complaints from copyright trolls.
Holy moly I did a solo dance routine to Look out for number one. I love the 80's
Amy Holland is one of my favourite artists, to be honest.
Mine too. I have both her albums on audio cassette.
what happened to Vol 3???
Jett Carlburg lost. Duh
Vol 2 isn't playing either, well for me
and volume 2 im tight.
Sorry, Ah Leah still receives airplay on Classic Rock stations. Not exactly lost.
true
Exactly
Looks like Nick Lowe playing acoustic for Paul Carrack. Which wouldn't be all that surprising.
Martin Briley looks a like lot Bob Welch (Fleetwood Mac, "Sentimental Lady")
What Do All the People Know went to 59 on the pop charts.
Sausalito Summer Night - Diesel (from Watts In A Tank, which I own on LP)...
Badfinger lead channelling Davy Jones?!
LMAO! "Johnny are you queer" I have never heard this and I am an 80's freak. .
You never saw Valley Girl with Nicholas Cage!? One of my favorite movies from 80's! ♥
Edit: I just saw your name!! LOL
It's on the "Valley Girl" soundtrack, along with Modern English's "I Melt with You" and The Plimsouls' "A Million Miles Away." Men at Work's "Who Can It Be Now?" is on my copy as well, although Wikipedia says that song has been removed from the special edition of the film on DVD.
that diesel song has a killer solo , donnie iris had that other hit , love is like a rock ,
What show were those dancing nymphos on???
Janie Frickie trying to be Olivia. (In my best Marisa Tomei from My Cousin Vinnie) "Janie Could NEVER be mistaken for Olivia"
I had a feeling one of the lesser talented Jacksons would appear on this list.
We owe a huge debt to Paramount and 'Operation Prime Time' for Solid Gold and the original Entertainment Tonight, two of the very best 80's shows.
Nielsen Pearson - Great song!!! It is the classic Yacht Rock song!
Best parts of this video: 3:19 - 3:54, 4:31 - 6:00
Anyone else like who was impressed with the song by The Monroes but was jarred at how they looked? Where the heck did they come from? The synth influence really made the difference.
These songs are just too obscure and underplayed to ring true as lost hits from a nostalgia perspective.
Did Volumes 2 and 3 Get pulled by you tube? cant find them
+Diane Butler Volume 2 is still here.
"Johnny are you queer?" wow lol
LMAO! I was gonna post the same. That song would never be released today.
That's because this current generation is nothing but snowflakes that look for a reason to be offended.
rcoveyduc If that song was made.today, the SJW wackjobs would be tearing everything up until the singer was thrown in jail, the song was taken off the radio, all copies of it burned, and a letter of apology written to anyone with any possible hurt feelings.
Wow! Latoya Jackson, before she visited the eighth dimension and came back with psychic powers, and looking just like Michael.
davart I know. Pretty pathetic what the indoctrinated in the schools have done to the weak-minded.
7:25. Eugene Levy!!!
Every song should have solid gold dancers in the background...
I can't find part 2 & 3
The salt in my tears guy is like a dollar store Rick Springfield
Teena Marie's I Need Your Lovin's far from forgotten!
Wow...Solid Gold
hope they remaster it in digital sound it would sound amazing!!!!
I love this Lost Hits series. Even the worst songs are way better than anything of Kanye, Bieber, etc.
Wish volume 1 was still around
Had that Cliff Richard tape
I remember American Bandstand on Saturday mornings. Those were the days of music.
these are great
6:00 RIP Tom Evans (1947-1983)
i forgot about this teena marie song, r.i.p. lady t!
awesome!
How do you define "Hit"?
A lot of these bands look like 1970's bands who tried to tweak their sound just enough to get on the 1980's pop radio before they vanished.
Ah Leah was never lost.
Donnie Iris “Ah! Leah!” is seriously the only good song of the bunch.
7:50....OMG....It's the Ice Truck Killer from Dexter. ahahahaha
Love me some Janie Frickie!!!! And I remember the song "Johnny are you queer?" That song would never be accepted today. Why i love the 80s!!!
I was hoping these songs would stay lost
kihei rc Then why are you watching?
The Monroe’s tune still sounds good
YIKES!
Proof that the '80s weren't ALL gold.
These ones I'm more lost on. I chalk it up being Canadian.
it looks like the munroes are being fronted by kenny loggins and artie lange.
Like the Ambrosia sighting!
this is like watching a Paul Verhoeven film , but just the in-universe commercials
I remember I was shocked the first time I saw the Monroes. They look like country/pop dudes. I pictured them looking like Flock of Seagulls or something.
Miss u Tina Marie
Lost ! Not surprised.
That guy from the Little River Band seems really pissed off.
Sausalito Summer Night kicks ass.
How the hell can that video make Lisa Hartman look like Larry Bird?
Latoya Jackson....The vocals were by the backup singers mostly...lol
This is more like it. These are lost songs.
I don't think I've ever heard any of these songs.
Should have waited until 7:22
I would like to think Lisa Hartman fired her stylist after that appearance. That was bad even for the 80's.
I was thinking the same thing.
