  • Welcome to My Plant Collection Series. In this video, I will share with you my care and propagation tips for my Dracaena Sunray (Dragon Tree). This is one of the easiest tropical houseplants I have so I highly recommend it. The foliage is quite unique as it has three different colors. This plant helps bring the jungle vibes without taking up a lot of space. Why does the leaves get brown tips?

    I can't tell you how happy I am to hear you say that these plants need more water than most people think and that is possibly the cause of browning tips.....NOT fluoride in the water! I'm a chronic UNDER waterer of my plants and I'm guilty of doing the same with my dracaenas. Also the water in the foothills of Colorado ranks very well so I never had a problem watering any of my other plants with it. Now I know why I have those brown tips...my dracaenas need more water. They are super dry more than half way down the pot.😞 I always wondered why they were always super moist at the plant stores but when u look up care instructions most info found says they like to dry out.🤦🏽‍♀️ Thanks so much for this great video & tap water link!!

      So happy you found it helpful! yeah, it doesn't make any sense because its a tropical plant and if you are giving it good light, which it can handle if you introduce it slowly, it will need more water. Homestead Brooklyn shared that link in her vid and I thought others would find it helpful since I water 99% of my plants with tap minus my carnivorous ones.

      How did the extra watering go? Do you still have brown tips? Or have they reduced in number?

    I loove your dracena it is such a beauty, mine is a more pinck or red-ish tone with some green in the center ! I wanted to point out that all dracenas shed their bottom leaves because they can grow massively and they just become a really long “trunk” with a beautiful lush end ! They look amazing when they reach their fullest potential outside! So don’t worry to much about the leaves dropping from time to time ! Mine is a bit bigger than the one you showed and it starting to take off so it is dropping a few leaves at the bottom and growing the fuller end with the soon to be long and tall trunk with a pretty pom pom on top 🥰

      Sounds like you have the marginata I think it's called. Thx for the tip. Mines been dropping leaves all winter. But is also growing! #growlights💚

    Just picked this out as my Christmas gift from my daughter. I took a looooong time deciding. But when I saw a Sunray at a Oak Harbor plant shop, I fell. Hard. I hope I do it justice. Am sure your tips here will help me do just that. Thanx!🙂

    Hi if I cut off the top I will put it in water but can I just leave the bottom part in the pot?

    I don't use tap water I use water that I leave for 24 hrs as tap water is no good for this type of plant

    I'm so excited to propagate my dragon tree! I like your idea of a ziplock bag over the top to increase humidity. Do you think a plastic bottle would do the same?

    • @BotanicalWoman
      @BotanicalWoman  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, the only issue with a bottle is the small opening? once the plant starts growing it make to hard to get it off without hurting the plant? let me know how it goes. =)

    What kind of medium do you use for your dracaena? I just got one and the roots are WILD so she definitely needs a repot

      I recommend using something draining but on the moist side because dracaenas like a bit more moisture and frankly doesn't like to dry out. I have mines in a self watering pot and it loves it

      thats really up to you. i don't really do that. but some people recommend it so that you know that next time when you water and you see new brown tips you know know. Its a good idea but i am too lazy

    Thank you so much! This was even more what I was looking for than I could have hoped! I'm in Seattle in the summer with a west-facing window and just got a Dracaena Marginata a couple days ago. It's great, but I seem to consistently have brown tips. I didn't want to overwater it, but it seems I shouldn't worry about that too much. Any other advice on keeping it moist besides frequent watering? Also thanks for the tip about the tap water :)

    • @jasonsteinberg5404
      @jasonsteinberg5404 4 роки тому

      The soil still seems moist since its delivery that's why I've felt hesitant to water it so far. Also, do you just trim the brown tips off or leave them- I'm guessing they don't go from brown back to green..I'm pretty new to this :) Thanks

    • @BotanicalWoman

      i find this plant to be pretty low maintenance, i water mines about once a week to every ten days. I touch the top of the soil and if it dry then i water it.

    • @BotanicalWoman
      @BotanicalWoman  4 роки тому +1

      you can trim it, if you like, its really just personal preference but i don't. as for watering, its best to underwater your plant then overwater as overwatering will cause root rot. underwater, the plant is stressed and maybe drop a few leaves but i feel like most plants bounce back a lot better from underwatering.

      @@BotanicalWoman I see- thanks for your tips! (No pun intended). I tried spraying/misting some water on the leaves, too, and sometimes putting it in the bathroom after a hot shower- just to see how those affect the leaves/tips! But as you seem to say, it seems largely about just giving it enough water (but more important to not overwater!). Thanks again :)

      @@BotanicalWoman medium was well drained, may be it was a fungal attack, the same thing happened with my spider plant too. Its very sorrowful to see a well doing plant suddenly die out. Now my peace lily is having brown tip. Twice I have cut the browned area and giving them a good misting thrice a day since it is dry and hot in kolkata now. I water the soil of peace lily when see it dry from the top. Shall I repot the plant or spray some fungicide? Please suggest some thing. ❤️

      ANKITA PAUL perhaps check for pests? My dieffenbachia and croton plants both browned and died off very suddenly due to spider mites. They can spread very easily/quickly to your other plants, as they did mine. You might see tiny silk webs in your plants if it is spider mites, and they usually live underneath the leaves. They are very small. Many of my plants developed browning tips and slowly started to die off. I coated every leaf of my plants in diatomaceous earth, and am now applying neem oil/water solution as a preventative.

    Seattle or water in Washington State is much better than water here in Charleston SC...I lived in Bremerton WA and I used tap water and my plants were fine...here distilled water is best...same for Jacksonville FL...that water is even worse than the water here in Charleston SC....

    I think you are misleading people. All the specialists agree that draceana can survive in a low to medium low light but will thrive in a indirect light and the reason your draceana can tolerate so much sun it is because it is facing a west side window. It would have been another story if it was facing direct sunlight from a south window. . the reason it doesnt. So no news here. Same thing for the water. They also say you can use tap water ii just depend of the quality of the water in your area. So still no news here. The reason why you water your plant so much it is because it's receiving a lot of light. So tired of people giving people half of the information or not detailing their informations and by doing that misinforming beginners plant parents.

    • @BotanicalWoman
      @BotanicalWoman  3 роки тому

      Absolutely true, there's a big difference between a few hours of sun on a west-facing window and direct sunlight from a south window. Also people can go here to check their local tap water: www.ewg.org/tapwater/. I recommend everyone research their plants care needs before they buy them so they know what they're in for! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
