- Let's face it - we don't always take perfect care of our plants. If you've ever had a houseplant that's started to droop or die off, here's a simple care recipe to bring it back to life.
Often times it's as simple as:
1. Remove dead plant matter
2. Repot in a slightly larger pot
3. Refresh the soil and add in new organic matter
4. Give it a GOOD soak
5. Leave it in perfect conditions and pray!

I think the number killer of plants is too much attention, not neglect. We tend to over water because if for some reason if the plants not looking "good" we automatically think it needs water, rather than trying to relocate it or repotting, etc.
That'd been exactly my problem, that'd for sure. My friend always tells me I love them too much and need to start neglecting them more. I'm deff an over water type . As soon as they look sad or something I run to water them !!!! Ugh, Think I'm FINNALLY learning tho...after along time and alot of plant deaths lol

I also have a dracaena marginata, and mine periodically needs to have the lower leaves removed because they go yellow/brown. I have found that this is usually not indicative of a problem as long as it’s just the lower leaves. It’s just the natural leaf cycle, and this is how they eventually get tall, bare stems that will make them a lovely tree shape. Your browning did not look that extensive, so I think you probably would have been fine with no repotting, especially since the root system didn’t look overcrowded. Another common issue with dracaena is green leaves turning brown only on at the tips. This can be caused by fluoride or chlorine in tap water, and can be prevented by switching to distilled or rain water. (I didn’t see any of that here, just mentioning it for other troubleshooters).

His wasn't in good shape, and would benefit in a larger pot, but it wasn't quite root bound, just very dry. I have also run into the issue with even mildly hard water browning the leaf tips. Found that if I leave my watering spray bottle open for 24-48 hours, it does better than directly watering from tap. I solved the first real bad issues I had by collecting rain water for a few weeks of waterings, and it can withstand water right from the tap occasionally now. Great plants though. Not too difficult once you get the hang of it.

So I use distilled water (as recommended by numerous plant people) Thing is, I still get brown tips occasionally. Curious if it can be caused by something other than water contaminated with fluoride/minerals.
@@snowy12841 over or under watering and possible lack of specific fertilizers for a potted plant. Sometimes it’s also not thinning out the plant enough. Brown tips are not always bad. I see mine have less in the winter than summer.

Yes!!! I noticed this too. We have to let them be and give them water just as much as it would if it was outdoors with rain or humidity. They are plants after all and we try to care for them like our babies lol I’m so guilty!
Sadly, for my plants I have been home recuperating since MARCH!! I love to water them. I noticed that if You pick the plant up out of the pot cover pot and it light it needs watering. If it’s heavy it doesn’t. There’s also a watering probe but that’s inexpensive but not as accurate, in my opinion. Also let the plant dry out, BUT when You see the leaves hanging, give it water. But then You can indulge in Your Water Fetish and really make it wet. But let the excess water run out. Also I have learned to go outside more often. Go to a Beer Garten, or do something outside to take my mind off of my Babies. But one thing Homeboy didn’t do and it’s very important when using Terracotta pots is to soak them in a pail of water until the air bubbles disappear. This enables the pot to hold in the moisture, closes the pores/air holes (see I know Some of y’all thought , “Pores? Clay doesn’t have pores. Skin does”) in the clay and ensures that the plant is being watered not the pot. Also when repotting always use a piece of broken pot or plastic to cover but not stuff the draining hole. This enables the excess water to drain and the roots won’t get root rot or the plant won’t be sitting in water. Too much Love is NEVER good. Something will always be hurt or die, be it Plant or Human. And just a tip for the Single Folks here. If You’re invited to a Dates place first look around and check out the cleanliness, but most importantly, if that Cat or Chic doesn’t have any plants, that’s a BAD sign, and if the plants are all dry out and sad looking, that’s how You’ll going to be looking. Because these are living Creatures that need to be cared for. And if that Person doesn’t have that ability? To each Their own but I have followed this guideline and although Single, I am Happily Single out of choice. Just a tip. Thanks for the video. Very informative as usual.

My issue is over watering. *guilty*.
I got plants who doesn't like water but also like moist soil. So I started watering in once a week and gradually decrease the days to get the perfect moist but not wet soil.
My dracena was going good until I repotted it in the potting mix with perlite. It all went droopy in a couple of months. Local garden center told me that Dracena is lime hating plant and perlite will eventually kill it. I had to soak the plant's rootball in water for several hours before I managed to remove all traces of perlite from its root system. It's back to life again. So how come you recommend perlite for dracena care?
I am a self employed gardener in Central FL, East Coast. I have propagated Dracaena by cuttings and planted them in my yard in the ground. I have a hedge of them and the tallest one is 8 feet. I have worked for other people that have them in their yards. I was amazed to see that they get a lot taller, like 12' to 15'. So don't plant them too close to the house.
So they like full sun?
My basil my sister bought was neglected and dying so I made it my mission to save it and once it grew and healed I put it into my garden “which I’m still new to” and can’t wait to see it grow with everything else I got going :) I’m 24 and live alone so still a little new for me in routine

Hi, I can't believe. Two years ago I stole a plant from my grandma because it was dying. That plant was the turning point from not appreciating plants to now having almost 300. I recently discover your channel and started to see all videos from the beginning, and on this one I had a dejavu because this video was the first video that I saw and helped me with that first one! My fading plant also is a dracaena funnily enough, so I did everything you said to in this video. It took several weeks but its leaves are all bushy and happy now and it looks great! Thanks so much for this old video, it 100% helped me.

I just did that to a few of my plants, it may be approaching winter time, but they really grew over the summer, and now they really needed some attention with some new big pots to let their roots spread out underground over the winter season.
My plant is doing that right now and I've been trying to save it for months thanks for the video!!

Great video, thank you. When I transplant a plant, I always soak the pot before to keep the pot from wicking the water from the soil.

I have that plant at home and I can tell you some expanded clay on the bottom would be a right choice. This plant likes humidity but hates soggy earth, that's why some light soil and the expanded clay works perfect. Also to spray once a week some water on the leaves will help not getting the endings dry. And no direct sun, this is a tropical plants and are never to be found in open spaces, they like big trees protecting them from the direct sun, but good light is needed.

I just started watching this channel a few days ago and this is already the third video where I was really disappointed in not seeing how the plant was doing after the "project" of the video was completed. Re-potted mine was dry at the bottom and roots coning through bottom on the pot,iv now got a healthy plant. gave it a clean and better soil and better bigger pot.its come back to life and growing again, plant held in there for a long time before i sorted it out.

With a move, a harsh Canadian winter letting some cold air in, limited sun getting to the plant and a neglectful owner (yours truly), I placed the plant next to the garbage, to be taken out. This morning, after noticing a few green leaves, I figured I’d give UA-cam a chance to help out. And there was your video. So, with my morning cup of coffee in hand and some empathy, I cut away the clearly dead, thick stems and moved the plant to a brighter room. Thanks for the tips. I’m no green thumb, but I will do my best.

I read somewhere that placing small rocks at the bottom of the pot beforr filling with soil helps with aeration and ensuring the plant doesn't sit in stagnant water
I didn't realize such a tiny plant could need a bigger pot 😔. My dracena (just found out it is one) is taller and I haven't repotted it yet and the leaves are dropping. I'm definitely going to do what you recommended! I can't wait to see this plant thrive because then I can propagate it 😂. New plants for free yeehaw 🤠 always the goal
If your leaves are dropping off and the tip of the plant seems dead, you can cut it back to a height you want it to start over in the live part of the stem. Any good remainder of the cutting can be cut at an angle and reinserted back into the soil.

I’d consider soaking it before repotting, and soaking the pot since it is clay?
I had a plant like that grows up to 8 ft. I moved the plant outside because we had our house fumigated, when I came back 3 days later the plant lost most of the leaves and I’m not sure if it will survive but the branches is still standing, but maybe repotting is a good idea . The chemicals certainly caused it because I did not moved it far enough in the house, I had that plant for 25 years . And it survived even after 6 weeks vacation. It always was a good background in every photo .

The thing I don't like about perlite is its tendency to 'float' to the surface, thus no longer aerating the soil. I have recently changed to adding one part pumice. Thus far, I have not had issues with it floating to surface of the soil. I also add 1 part of horticulture charcoal, 1 part of orchid bark, and a handful of worm castings to my potting mix. I have had no issues with my plants going into shock from repotting, dropping leaves, or even drooping/wilting following repotting.

I have a very tall plant that was gifted to me and I think I gave it too much water. It's too heavy for me to re-pot and I don't know what to do to revive it. I'm slowly learning, glad I found your channel.

My grandma has that plant. When she cuts off a branch another one grows. That thing never dies. It usually goes 1-2 weeks between watering and it never dies, lol. Probably hasn't been repotted in a few years.

I just re-repotted a failure-to-thrive ponytail palm. I think my first effort to repot was done with poor technique (packing soil too tight, choosing wrong kind of soil, not breaking up the roots to prevent root memory). Thanks for the helpful videos! I’ve learned a lot from watching your channel. How is the dracaena doing?
I guess now i have the exactly same problem with my ponytail palm. The truck is kind of mushy and has many rotten leaves. So... Did the re-potting help? and please can you tell me how long did it take to recover and which soil mix have you used?
Trunk is mushy?? Remove the plant from the soil and trim any mushy, black (dead) roots ASAP. Ponytail does not like wet feet. Water every 2 weeks on average, probably less in the winter. Ponytail likes a well draining soil. I use a cactus mix. But even some cactus mixes could stand to have a bit of extra perlite. Make sure you have good drainage holes. Use a terra cotta pot if you tend to overwater. One thing I am unsure is of whether or not to apply rooting hormone to the roots that you trim. Then put plant back in dry soil and hold off on watering for about a week. Then water thoroughly. Best of luck! So sad to see a plant struggle...Oh and my ponytail is doing better on one side. The roots on the thriving side are already coming out of the bottom of the pot after replanting only 6 weeks later. I am hoping the other side will catch up. I rotate the plant so I do not think it has to do with light.
We killed one of those after a few years, just not enough light & we’d forget to water, maybe after we have new drapes made & installed we’ll try again! I always thought the yellow leaves also went so learned something.

If you use a coffee filter or some newspaper in the bottom of the pot it keeps the soil from washing through the drain hole..also crumpled newspaper works to hold moisture in the soil longer..the ink will not harm the plant..I’ve been doing this for years..

Nice Video! Underwatering is one of the easiest problems to remedy though! The haircut and repotting (a lot of visible life seen) are excellent choices to fix this plant. Overwatering on the other hand is often a slow certain doom for draceaenas though!

My cat was eating at my dracena.. so I just cut it back.. added more soil/ fertilizer, put it outside to get fresh air! Its doing great!!

Overwatering is nr. 1 plantkiller. Neglecting is second.
BTW: If you use these kind of pots you always have to water them more because these pots absorb water and because of this the soil dries faster than in a ceramic or plastic pot. The pot he used before was already a bit too big. You can see that with the roots. If the roots are so close to the potwalls and come out of the bottom hole, they definitely need a bigger one. If plants have a too big pot they grow a buuunch of roots but ontop won't happen a lot because of that. And make sure to use a drainage material- as example stones. Place approximately 1-3cm high stones on the bottom of the pot so the excess water can drain from it more easily there. Because if the water can't drain the roots begin to rot and the plant eventually dies. So always check the soil. :)

always get a pot with a hole at the bottom so water can drain also just dont over water.
should that clay pot first be soaked in water, so that once plant / soil are added the dry pot doesn't pull moisture from the soil?

When I repot a dry root system I water the roots first then I water soil. That works for me.

hi. i have a blue flower plant that seems to have dried the bark(stem) but the leaves and flowers are still colorfully alive. what are the chances of it growing upright again? i just found out to be from the ivy family. it had bent forward from the weight of its branches. i trimmed it in hope it wud grow upright like it used to.

My spider plant needs help.
Some time ago I trimmed its roots. Then I hung it in direct sunlight. Saw it losing colour n started having burnt leaves and learned from Google that it doesn't tolerate direct sunlight. Removed it from direct sunlight and removed burnt leaves but I don't see any betterment. Its leaves are still pale green and droopy.
Could it be that it's dying because of trimming roots? Or is it just sick because of all hat sunlight and will be okay after some time?
