Well, Hashino was in the teams which created both the press turn system and the one more system. The combination of archetypes (persona-esque) for all characters and the press turn system in its older version gives a more mixed blend of Persona and SMT, almost similar to Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. The entrance to the dungeons, safe rooms and calendar system, the Akademia and social links makes it a bit too P5 though in a funny way. I am glad Shoji Meguro injected a bit of Strange Journey in the soundtrack.
As a long time Megami Tensei fan, as someone who holds SMT in very high regard, and as someone who loves all things Atlus and all the MegaTen spinoff series, I have to say this - Metaphor may just be the greatest game they have made and might just be the best JRPG we have had in a decade. The way that it *perfectly* mixes Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and even Final Fantasy V and Tactics together all in one has me absolutely addicted. It’s like they injected everything they have mastered over the past 20 years, and everything they have been influenced by, and blended it to perfection. - The culmination of the best representations Press Turn System from Nocturne and SMTV Vengeance. - The character centered combat of Digital Devil Saga. - The musical themes of Strange Journey - The character development and social dynamics of Persona 5 Royal - The artstyle of renaissance and baroque period paintings. - The relevance and social commentary of real life systemic issues like racism, classism, capitalism, fascism, religious extremism, and socioeconomic inequality. - The job systems, character customization, political strife, and fantasy worlds heavily influenced by Final Fantasy V, FF Tactics, and Tactics Ogre. The game is fucking amazing. This really is going to be the “third pillar” of Atlus, and is 100% worthy of being part of the legendary Megami Tensei universe. Whether you are a mainline Shin Megami Tensei fan, a Devil Summoner, or Persona fan, or just a fan of JRPGS in general, you owe it to yourself to grab this one!
It’s hard to deny the similarities between this and persona. But the influence from other SMT games is also undeniable particularly with the battle system. It's supposed to be a "3rd wheel", yes. Given that the 1 million sales limit was passed on day 1, there's no way they'll let it go just like that. Think how much Persona 5 there was after Persona 5 came out - a game in the 3ds, a CRPG, a musou, etc.
I got the game because I want to give it a try even though it still feels way too different from Persona which for me is not the best thing, even after playing the demo. I don't why it just doesn't vibe with me much. The one good thing I like about it is all the interactions/dialogue but no highschool setting, no playing as teenagers in a modern setting but still having some stuff from Persona mechanics wise in it but in a weird way not, just confuses me lol Makes me miss Persona lol The one thing so far I did like is that if the MC dies it's not game over. Always thought that was dumb and got many game overs because an enemy got a lucky shot on the MC while everyone else is perfectly fine. THANK GOD this game doesn't have that. What I didn't really like gameplay wise that Persona did have is being able to change archetypes in battle. I wish we could do that but from the demo we can't which really sucks and I can tell I'll get into really annoying situations thanks to that since I don't really know what weaknesses the enemies will have. Who knows tho, maybe I just play a bit more and I'll be able to do that after all which would be great since a lot of other Atlus JRPG's do that. I'm sure this game will be great but for me it probably won't stand hand in hand with Persona. That's okay though. I just hope Persona 6 sticks with what's been working for it best, the highschool setting, playing as teenagers, modern setting, social links(or whatever they'll call them), etc. Oh man, I really hope they don't change things.
And here we come to the crux of the problem. It seems like this game is best suited for people who aren't privy to the Persona series all that much. Otherwise you'll always be on the lookout for similarities and flaws (when compared to say, P5) because you're already familiar with the formula used in those games. And yes, I still think that it won't become as prominent as Persona.
