It's not uncommon fo example square decided to make one last game before they close their doors and that game was final fantasy and we know where that went
The sentiment "Throughout the game, you see everyone lose someone close to them, EXCEPT FUUKA" is often used to critique her arc and say that she doesn't mesh with the themes. People completely miss that her resolution moment with Natsuki is built on the fact that while the cast has all lost someone incredibly close to them, Fuuka still has her parents. It's a call to action. For Fuuka to reach out to the people she still has left and make the most of the time they still have. Her resolution is one of the most important ones in the game for exactly that reason.
I’m not sure about that. Fuukas a great character and I do agree that her resolution is just as important as the other main cast social links, I just don’t think said resolution is “it’s your responsibility to build a bridge with the people who are actively causing you strife”
@@bluebay1031If you're talking about her relationship with Natsuki, then you're gonna be shocked to learn that people can change. Even those who used to cause you strife. The message of her story isn't that you should break bread with those who wish to see you in pain, or cause you misery. It's what op said Also, Fuuka wasn't the one who reached out to mend things, or offer friendship irc
It doesn't have to be death, Persona 3 is really about life and the end, different forms of end that is seen throughout the social links too. Natsuki moved out of the town that made her realize that her time with Natsuki in school has ended, but it made her realize that no matter where they might be they are connected and also realized her persona is not the manifestation of her weakness but her desire to connect to people and see their hearts, thats why Juno's eyes finally opened
The point that hit me the most is when I tried to understand the lyrics of "Memories of you". Its not about the death, the end of the world, or saving it altogether. It about the memories that we made together.
To this day Persona 3 still has one of my favorite game OSTs of all time- even its version of Aria of the Soul is my favorite out of the whole Persona series.
Persona 3 is my favorite entry of the series. The themes and some of the character arcs resonated with me a lot more than any other Persona game. It's still one of my favorite games of all time. This video was excellent and really detailed pretty much everything there is to love about the game!
Persona 3 has the best themes and story! It's really hard to beat, and imo neither p4 or p5 came any close P3 made me care about the characters and actually made you feel as if the protagonist was its own individual, and you're going on a Journey with him. The ending only emphasizes that.
the pacing nd gameplay has improved sm since p3 tho, it still does have my fav message throughout the whole series but holy shit u can tell the dev team during 3 was new
You mentioned the positives while overlooking the negatives P3/p3fes negatives: Bland level design Terrible s.links, lack of slinks for many of the SEES team. Cannot fully control party during combat Dumb ai Story falls flat just after midway point and only gets somewhat interesting towards the end Some of the music was not good at all. Yeah sometimes nostalgia blinds us and we only focus on the good points while ignoring some of its apparent and glaring negatives.
@@desmondgovender3142yeah, sure you can say that but at the same time most of what you said was completely new in persona games. Personally i think most of what you said is just personal opinion (other than that one slink everybody knows and hates).
Yessss knock down is your friend. I love the reason FES has AI-control of party members. I always approached it from an "individual psychology" perspective, as in all the P3 members very much feel like separate individuals from the MC compared to the later Persona entries. Like the devs were going for based on the big P3 interview. I think it also means a lot that the male (and original) protag doesn't have SLs with the guys, and yet it doesn't mean "they're not friends." (There's actually a lot more I can say about this given the memento mori theme, the protag's starting demeanor, and the willing sacrifice at the end... and how the FemC route can offer a different perspective in large part *because* of how the male MC is portrayed, but I'm cutting all this short for brevity's sake lol). But yeah, it's a great point that it's not always easy to work together, even if you all have the same goal, and P3 incorporate that team dynamic feel very well. I know you bring up how P3 just feels very "real life"/organic, and this battle system is just another one of those reasons for me. Having played a lot of team sports and been in a lot of different music ensembles growing up, it just highlights that irl feel that you have to **communicate** with your teammates to get shit done. You all want to accomplish the same thing, but you all have different roles you need to fulfill to make it happen, and people can't read minds! Like speaking up when 3rd trombone part in jazz needs to play louder so the harmonies are brought out more. The player themself might not even realize that's what the ensemble needs rn. And dude yes, thanks for sharing more personal anecdotes with us like eating out in the Mitsuru section. I just want to say, it's cruel to shame people for things they don't know or have never experienced. 99% of people are doing their best with what they're given/based on their life experiences up to that point. It's already embarrassing finding out that something you didn't know is considered "common knowledge," so why be a shithead and make someone feel even dumber by making fun of them for it? "No wayyyyy you haven't done/don't know _______?!?" 🙃Not saying this happened to you in that particular instance, but this is just something I wanted to say lol. On that note, HOW DARE YOU SAY THAT ABOUT SHINJI AND THE FEMC TIMELINE SHIT. YOU'RE WRONG. 😂 (I agree, the chemistry is sweet, but I **am** one of those "I think it lessens the impact of memento mori and the Greek tragedy-inspiration of P3" folk lol. I think the same about the Chidori-Junpei thing in January ngl). Speaking of P3's Greek-tragedy inspiration, the social links very much echo that aesthetic really well, since one of the major aspects of that genre is the **tragic flaw.** Sure, all three Hashino Persona games have social links revolve around reverse-tarot archetype learning how to incorporate the upright traits, meaning all these characters have room to grow... but P3 above all three has pretty much every SL have a legit **flaw** at the start. Thank you for defending Mamoru btw. You just straight up Mamoru'd Mamoru and I can't thank you enough. Unconditional love is such an interesting concept. Like I agree, a relationship is a two-way street. Both parties will have a boundary, whether they think they have one or not. Ideally people will communicate and be clear about their boundaries **if** a time ever comes when one person keeps violating the other's, but even then things often don't work out unfortunately. With that said, the concept people call "unconditional love" realistically to me means something along the lines of: you can still wish that person gets the help they need/finds a way to change someday and live a fulfilling life, even if that means you won't be in it anymore. That's my take on it anyhow. I get we all think differently when it comes to the nature of human relationships. The month of December definitely plays into the Apathy syndrome aspect of this game. There are always gonna be times when life feels this way, and this works in a meta-sense where the player as well has to "slog through this month"/the difficult times and/or boring times (whichever way a person tends to view this month), to get to January and the apex of this fantastic game. and yesssss, JRPGs have **always** echoed anime tropes of the time. SAY IT LOUDER FOR THOSE IN THE BACK. It's like... Japanese archetypes will be reflected in ALL their different forms of media or something LOL. Persona 3 gang rise uppppppp. Incredible work. Thanks for doing this service for P3 and all us stans of it 🙏
Too bad that the AI part members don't make for a good system. Consistency is key, and they fail to do that. The fact they try to justify bad design by thematics is a joke, you can imagine their personalities and how they'd act as part of a team just by move sets and stats along with their battle dialogue, without having to see them do stupid choices that no player with a brain would make, even when you demonstrate to the AI what they need to do. You can say its realistic to how teammates would work in real life, but coughing, sneezing and forgetting what you were saying is also common in real life, and that's not usually a main part of a game, simply because its not good sign for an experience. The death scene was stupid anyways, not just because Junpei apparently died to a regular bullet rather than something truly threatening, but because he didn't even immediately die, not to mention how much time they gave Takaya to act. Like, if he didn't instantly die, then just use healing magic. You can use it in the overworked, and nothing in the game suggests you can't heal people with Personas otherwise so that's dumb, along with Shinji's death. The Greek tragedy aspect is such a snore, considering how many tragedies were just not truly addressed or caused because the party has no brain cells. Apathy Syndrome sucks compared to the Shadowmen in Persona 2, there's barely any reason to care about this, because no significant characters are affected by the condition, nor does the syndrome really worsen like it did with the Shadowmen condition did with Eikichi's friends. It's just a detached reason as to why you want to kill the shadows, rather than something that brings good depth, without showing worsening consequences outside of it spreading. Forcing the player into slogging through boring sections of a game in order to make meta feelings only works in a select few situations like the ladder scene in MG 3 or some of the gameplay of Spec Ops: The Line, which put them to set up some truly harrowing or climactic moments in the series. It doesn't work in an RPG like this, especially not when the majority of the game barely has any antagonistic pressure, stakes, or interesting story development. As for the tropes, if they did less intrusively, or done better character writing while using those tropes, then things would be different wouldn't they?
This comment introduced me to LadyVirgilia content and hell yes, you need an algorithm push man that’s some good content. Wish longform essay content was more popular with the algorithm 😅
55:15 - thank you for bringing that up!! One thing I love about Yukari is how impulsive she can be at times. She acts on emotion, and it often puts her at odds with people. Justified or not, she's always able to reflect and realize that maybe the way she approached the conflict was not the best. It takes a lot to reflect on your actions and apologize. I really admire her for that.
6:44 is why this is my favorite social sim persona, everyone took situations in a more realistic manner. Akihiko, doesn't go hog wild. After seeing the main character awaken. He's most likely thinking, "who did we let into our dorm?" maybe even; "This sophomore might prove useful". I appreciate Persona 4 & 5 trying to be entertaining any way they can, but a scenario in those games would include someone screaming, "A PERSONA NO WAY, like DuDE he can do that?". Akihiko's face is so perfect. No words, it's a real mood-setter for his awakening. The whole game is littered with amazing mood-setters. As well as, the characters never disagree with each other in the other games, 4 have like one time that happens and 5 only have a feuding moment to make a Morgana arc. 3 really makes you feel like saving the world isn't your only issue.
The difference is that Akihiko already knows about Personas. In the later persona games, the protag is always the first to awaken and figure out what it is in the party.
Persona 3 truly is a one-of-a-kind game. It's a game that affected me in a way I never thought possible. It's a game that saved my life at my darkest point. It made me realize things that I forgot in my depression. Not just the main game but the The Answer as well. It understood what I was going through and gave me the comfort I needed. I'll forever love and cherish this game.
I think this video might be one of the very few pieces of media that actually made me tear up, reminded me how I grew to love P3 and how much it helped me throughout my life. Made me appreciate the game even more seeing what made it special and how this type of media although a game can make you appreciate life more
The whole 2 hour journey of this video has been an amazing experience (and this is coming from someone who has a bad attention span). You got my sub, and I'm excited to explore more of your content!
Persona 3 is my favorite video game of all time, so I really appreciate you being a voice advocating for it when so many people write it off. It's an absolute masterpiece of presentation and writing, along with some of the most fun and immersive gameplay I have ever experienced in a JRPG. Thanks for making great videos; I'm proud to have you on my Patreon.
Man... This video is LEGIT one of the best I've seen in the entire YT... Persona 3 was always my favorite game of the series. And it's because it teached me a lot of things... Things that I was able to apply, and other things not yet... But one day I will, and every time I do, I'll remember this game.
Persona 3 means so much to me. I love the way it tells its story and handles its characters. I love how the game is structured and how it plays. And I love that it was unabashedly experimental. Persona 3 feels like a game that isn't afraid of being itself. It knows what it wants to be and does it with the utmost confidence. It has a very clear theme and message that may not be delivered super subtly, but is still done very powerfully. The gameplay is unique, from it's predecessors, to it's successors, and even it's contemporaries. The game overall gives you a one of a kind experience regardless of your background in media. I'll never forget what this game has done for me. Memento Mori.
100% this. P3 Reload, as beautiful as it looks, sadly does not have the same level of courage to be as strange, but undeniably enticing as the original. It's like the term 'edge', but in the best way possible. Watch the cutscene where Yukari is trying to use her evoker in her room side by side for just one example.
Finally had time to sit down and enjoy this in all its glory. You absolutely cooked with this one. I especially appreciate the Yukari and Junpei sections since people are way too harsh on their dynamic; they clearly care about each other despite their bickering. The music section was also great since the soundtracks contribute so much to the tones of the male and female route. I like how the male soundtrack is more chill while the female is peppier since it makes the female route and protagonist feel even more unique. Awesome video.
I was 32 years old when i spent the night at a hotel for the very first time. I'd been to hostels and motels and (cheap) vacation homes before but NEVER an actual hotel. I was on a roadtrip with a friend and he got sick and he said oh lets just stay at this hotel for 1 night. He laughed for 5mins when i wanted to bring my sleeping bag and towels up to the room. I didn't KNOW hotels had towels and linens. My parents were very poor working class. And so we never went on any expensive vacations. I went on a plane ONCE when i was 16 and that was for a school trip we only managed to pay for with the help of my grandparents. The second time i was 22 years old and going to study abroad for 6 months. I just haven't done a lot of the stuff that people my age usually know how to do. Book flights, book hotels, know how to behave at a hotel breakfast buffet, know how to navigate an airport, buy anything that costs more than a couple of hundred bucks (i get such bad anxiety i start crying if i have to pay for a big ticket item). The important thing is that people are trying to learn knew things and that we're not letting our childhoods define us forever.
Just wanted to say that i relate to the thing w being anxioud about spending a lot. It seems that the replies above mine are making fun of you for it?? so i wanted to say this to let you know youre not alone (cheesy but true). I remember i got a panic attack once when i spotted a sweater i wanted in a store once that i then saw cost like 50 dollars I didnt want it anymore because experiencing childhood poverty made me feel guilty about having basic human needs as long as they took money to deal with My guardian insisted on buying it because i had already pointed it out before i looked at the price tag I actually felt physically sick Even now i still feel immense guilt over buying clothing and food Growing up poor can traumatize you.
the segment on yukari is important, so many times i'll see people dismiss yukari as a stone cold bitch when she really only gets angry when it's warranted. the game literally goes out of its way to show that she is a sweet and caring person, so when people call her a bitch for simply standing up for herself after being sexually objectified and call junpei a bro after doing said objectifying, it begs the question as to what the real reason people hate her is.
I actually think her English voice acting plays a part in it. Michelle Ruff is a good VA, but voice direction has Yukari sounding harsh most of the time, while hearing Yukari's Japanese voice in Q2 she sounds a lot sweeter there.
@@samreddig8819 it was very hard to not use her because of her abilities. If it wasn't her I used Ken as a more aggressive healer. 2 characters that some people hate were the most useful while playing. I never hated either of them because Yukari never seemed deserving of hate, and Ken was still figuring things out.
the way i cried over the shinji part and not in the "oh the timeline is messed up" way but in the "HE HURTS ME SO BAD I FEEL ILL I MISS HIM" way. after i played through his social link i Cried upon realization during the full moon scene, and i just. man. shinjiro is an amazing character even with him not having a proper end because he's not Supposed to, he's supposed to die, and he accepts it, but he definitely held regrets and shinjiro's social link in p3p shows that so well... im sad ok
@@MizuFujimori learning something is very different from letting it make you. this guy didnt play p3 and walk around screaming whos da man because junpeis arc was good.
One aspect of the tactics system of Persona 3 that people don't seem to realise, is that each character's AI actually acts based on their personality. If you set them up into Act Freely, and observe how they act, you'll realise: * Just how freaking reckless Junpei is 😂 * How caring Yukari is. * How tactical Mitsuru attempts to be. * And the absolute machine that Koromaru is when protecting you from danger. Each character has tendencies of their own that they lean into. And if you for whatever reason need them to act differently and override those tendencies (or lean harder into them), then you have Tactics.
P3's story and themes made it one of my favorites in the series. It made up for whatever gameplay qualms I may have. Personally, I have P3Fes and P5R at a tie for best Persona game.(I haven't played Femc route and looking forward to it!) Both games had really moving bits that made me cry too. Hard for me to pick one. I agree with P3 having the best cast too. I loved everyone! And you hit the nail - I don't think simply being like best friends is interesting enough to me or a great criteria to rank which cast is the best on. I much preferred P3's dynamic and I would actually like to see more complex relationships like that in P6. It's how they eventually got close only towards the latter part of the game that I liked. The development of their relationships. I love how you explained Yukari. She's my favorite girl from P3, 4 and 5. Thanks for this great in-depth video!
I love Persona 3 so much, both for the personal impact it had for me and, for better or for worse, setting the stage for major parts of what I like about Persona as a series. It's so insane just how well Persona 3 just... WORKS.
Yeah, a Persona game set in college is not a good idea for the reason you said in the video. A Persona game set in the transition to the adult life on the other hand... A guy in their first serious job, having to move to another town, living by himself for the first time. I think it could be really really cool.
firstly this is an amazing write up of one of my favorite games of all time. i agree with you on so many points. it's such a strong entry, the cast is incredible and absolutely the best written in the series, and i actually 10000% agree with you on the party control issue... not only is it NOT EVEN THAT DIFFICULT TO USE, but i think it really helps tell the story through the gameplay and people overlook that a lot. secondly your thoughts on shinjiro/femc are so real and also mirror mine perfectly. they definitely got married and lived happily ever after there is nothing bad that happens to either of them again :)))) but fr, you're absolutely right. saving shinjiro doesn't go against the core themes imo - if anything, it helps solidify them. yes, death is inevitable. yes, people die. no, that does not mean we should just give up on everything because that fate is inescapable.
I had a fairly similar intro to the series and Atlus as a whole. My roommate had a TV in our dorm and at night he'd play Persona 5. I remember watching him and asking him about it. Fast forward a few years later, and while I was looking for something new to play I picked up P5 and have been into the series since. Played 4 a few months later, and just this January I played P3. Another friend showed me how to emulate games, so it's onto 1 and 2. Before I knew it I played Nocturne and Catherine as well, and I'm halfway thru Soul Hackers 2.
You made around 200k people watch a 2 hours video in the TikTok shorts era This video is amazing im glad you gave credits for the characters before i tried p3 i heard people saying p5 for the gameplay p4 for the characters and p3 for the story but after finishing it I can argue that p3 have a better cast than 5 59:26 I'll cant forget and small dialogue you have with Yukari when Shinji was with SEES telling you that since we have shinji now we can replace junpei but if you choose to agree with that she'll tell you it was a joke and junpei is still a part of SEES Their relationship is like siblings annoying each other but caring for the other deep down + Someone gave recognition to mutatsu
I have a thing where I don't address a character by name until they've earned my respect. I'm only partway through 4. But so far I still call Chie, bowl cut. I call Yukino Arthur Fleck. Because her only personality trait is that she laughs sometimes. I call everyone in 3 by their name.
@@samreddig8819 Honestly pretty fair lmao, I do really like most of the characters of p4 tho, so I recommend sticking with the game, but personally the ending doesn’t hit as hard as P5 or P3 and Marie fucking sucks, Marie is way worse than Bowl Cut in every possible way to me.
@@RaggyRo the only thing Marie has going for her is that she's a goth girl. And I do like 4 so far. Be even though I played portable for 3 it GRABBED me.
@@samreddig8819 calling her a goth girl is giving her way too much credit lmao, also that’s understandable P3’s story is better than P4’s but P4 has better slice of life feeling
King you dropped this 👑 Honestly my favourite big video about Persona 3, took the words out of my mouth on nearly everything and talked about things that I wanted people to talk about. Keep up with the peak content 🎉
It's honestly kinda funny (and refreshing mind you) that Yukari gets an extra long segment due to her being misunderstood by the broader community. I was indifferent towards her, but your segment on her character really put into perspective the amount of care put into each and every member of SEES. Bravo. On that note, Aigis is my favourite P3 character, and you were spot on when talking about her. She doesn't really come into her own until the very end of the game, however it is my opinion that the moments where she does shine, she shines the brightest. It also sort of helps that the P3 movies zero-in on the relationship between Aigis and the MC more, but perhaps that was intrusive towards many people who aren't Aigis fanboys.
Man this is such a good video??? I like how you share some of your own experiences and dive into why this game is so special to you. I relate a lot to your perspectives! GOOD STUFF!!
You know, I was always confused why you removed your original video on Persona 3. However, I'm glad that you decided to take the time to make a definitive retrospective on the game. This was a pretty well written video, can't wait for more.
Approaching the end of the video and man, you've really encapsulated how I feel about this game. Persona 3 is my favourite in the series and I'm so happy to see others share that same amount of passion for it. This is an amazing video, thank you so much for making it!
literally encapsulates all of how i feel about persona 3,,, it hit so hard for me when i first played, and every time I'm going through something difficult, I boot it up again, or I just watch someone play it.. top 10 video essay ever
Yess!! I think you've pretty much touched upon all the reasons why this is my favorite of the persona games! I am one of those folks who do love Aigis jfjgig but it's okay if you didn't really care for her as much! I'm also very glad you're not one of those fans who hate Yukari; you brought up a lot of points about her character and how complex and realistic her character really is and I appreciate it! Also same with Junpei! I will be honest though and say that I still have yet to finish p2 ... both games, so idk my favorite could change possibly. Persona 3 was my first of the persona games so there might also be a little bit of bias there, but I think for me it also was good timing when I first played it and since then it held a special place in my heart💙! Thoroughly enjoyed the video!!
How did I just realize the genius of having the great seal cost 100% of your hp? No other skills let you kill yourself, but that's exactly what needs to happen to seal nyx
Sorry for my English. I was really happy to hear your opinion about Shinjiro, cuz he is underrated. But maybe it’s because he really shines in his social link with femc. Great video, thank u for persona 3 content
"Shinjiro is the best romance in Persona" SO BASED!!!!! SO TRUE!!!!!! A lot of people dismissed his social link as just pandering for Shinjiro fangirls and I'm glad you're not one of them. Sure, as a certified Shinji enjoyer I might be biased but watching someone with suicidal tendencies (even already planned the day of his death) realize that there's something to look forward to in life even if it's small like cooking for your friends or hearing your friend's ghost stories is beautiful. It fits P3's theme so well. Dare I say that his romance route was integrated to the theme as well as Aigis. His friendship route works too, but let's face it, it's impossible to NOT romance him lol Also I really doubt the supposed P3 remake will add FEMC's route (it's probably just gonna be P3 FES with P5 graphics), but if they do, I really would love to see Shinji as the wild card in The Answer. People who want to keep Shinji longer in combat will be happy and I think it's interesting to explore his possible survivor guilt as FEMC dies instead of him (in the NG+ route it's even sadder since she dies in his arms, just shortly after he woke up from his coma). Also Aki and Shinji solo fight would be cool. It's still extremely unrealistic considering that Atlus would need more resources to write it (P-Studio is already very busy working on Persona 6 at the same time) and it's easier to just switch MC for FEMC in the existing The Answer but one can dream
Great video, love P3 but mostly I just came to agree with your appreciation of Mitsuru, best girl for sure, I do love Aigis (and really, the whole cast in general) but Mitsuru is absolutely awesome... I may just have to go and replay the game now :X The only thing that is bad about her is the requirements neccessary and how late she unlocks as a social link, meaning if you dont go by a guide or dont know the game really well, you may even entirely miss out on her social link, or at least large parts of it, not to mention her christmas date. And while it makes sense, its still a bit off putting that you need to be so intelligent for her to even consider hanging out with you, even if she does mean it in a good way for your future. There are people who dislike Mass Destruction? Its so freaking lit. The music in this game is absolutely amazing, I replayed it several times but I cant help but cry at the credits song and the music in the city after you defeat Nyx is also incredible, they got the tone just right. I also dont get the hate for Yukari, but in my mind it always mostly stemmed from her actions in the Answer rather than her actions in the main game because she does always try to make up for her shortcomings, it also never really seemed like there is any real bad blood between her and Junpei so I just took it as bit of a friendly banter, I dont know, I like her, imo P3 cast is the strongest of the games. And yea, this is probably the only jrpg I can confidently say really did the power of friendship thing well, its almost in every jrpg but its usually so obvious and so overt that it kinda ruins any and all feelings of danger or stakes, here yea, power of friendship saves the day, but not only is it earned but it also still comes at a cost. Also... BURN MY BREAAAAAD!
One thing i love about aigis is that she always seems to know more than she lets out, during the scene after you seal nyx, shes the only one that seems to really understand what happened. I just kept thinking back to searching for that cat with her. How we kept looking for it until the old lady said "shes probably looking for a place to die you dont have to keep looking". Learning about what it means to be alive and what it means to die staying with you til your final moments crying as shes telling you how much she still wants to be with you. It feels painfully real.
It's nice to see such a thoughtful retrospective on the Persona 3 experience made in good faith and experience. I look forward to seeing your future work, and I'm now subscribed. Persona 3 is still my favorite of the series as I played the original PS2 version before FES dropped. I thought it was the most deserving of the old titles for a reintroduction, and now I get to see what that will look like outside of my mind soon. Thanks again for giving this game the attention it deserved.
Persona 3 was my introduction to RPGS, and will forever hold a special place in my heart. Even after all these years, it's still true though that everyone is gangster until Kimi no Kioku drops
I just don't understand people saying "persona 3 has the worst writing of the franchise, persona 3 has the worst characters of the franchise, skip persona 3 man this game is unplayable, persona 3 is just EDGY cause back in 2000 EDGY was cool" this people played the game blindfolded? They even played the game? How can these people talk so much shit about this masterpiece?
I enjoy p3s command system because it was different. On my new game plus run I ended up being the party healer and let my allies do most of the damage. It was actually really fun to have the MC in that type of roel for once. I haven’t played a game where you are the healer and not just the leader badass like every game ever. It made it really interesting and honestly seemed to matched the character’s selflessness nature more
My fav game ever!! I actually love the independent party members because gives them more character, we have to live and deal with them besides battle, if they are people for themselves they must make their own decisions, yes, sometimes the IA doesnt help but so does people! LOVE IT!
omg you were at college at P5 ? I was at college on P3 got out. Daaamn its so cool to see the series evolving and changing along generations. Tnks for the video, Im watchting while working this afternoon. Cheers from Brasil
0:25 >"if you told people these games were from the same series... i'm not sure they'd believe you" >first clip is a character in a turn-based rpg summoning a monster to attack an enemy while saying the word "persona" out loud >second clip is a character in a turn-based rpg summoning a monster to attack an enemy while saying the word "persona" out loud (in all seriousness, i like the video! i just thought your choice of clips to demonstrate the difference between the two games is a little ironically funny :3)
Love the video btw, unlike the last one your video doesnt come off as clickbait because this is an actual fact. You also do a great job with all the timestamps. Although I still think 2 hours is absurd. But i do agree that there's so much to talk about its mind blowing.
I really respect that he was able to criticise the community's mistreatment of Yukari and called out the misogyny. I don't often see UA-camrs talk about the misogyny in games and fandoms this way.
I have just finished FES and plan to play FeMC and RELOAD as well while it is still fresh. Having played it after P4G and P5R I have to admit I found it hard to like the game. The story showed promise but the low budget AMVs and bad dubbing often pulled me out of the immersion. I still stand by Yukari and she is honestly my favourite character aside from some standout social links but they don't compare to her since she has an arc amongst the main cast. Aigis came close but I think I was burnt out on FES before she really started to shine. My surprising conclusion to the top 3 is Junpei. I don't like him most of the time but his writing is so good I can't help but like him by the end. Overall I think it is the worst turn-based JRPG I have played but I have this weird attachment to the story that makes me want to play every version to find what truly resonates with me. Also I know I already said it but OMG having just finished the game and avoiding any critiques of the game to form my own opinions, it felt like whiplash hearing so many people call Yukari a B*tch and hating her and her arc. Especially when in many ways I do believe Junpei is worse when it comes to making people deeply uncomfortable and angry, without apologies either. so maybe it is my bias but the misogyny is really the only reason I can see for how much people hate this pretty incredible character.
I finished this game not so long ago this year both The Journey and The Answer, so this is perfect! I love this game so much from start to finish, so gonna binge the hell out of this.
The only good thing about P5's AI: Morgana's actually prioritises healing Ann over anyone else. I normally don't find the Morgana simp jokes funny, but when they're written into the actual CODE? Amazing. Yukari gets a lot of demonization for the whole 'Fuuka was pressured to join' phase. I think a lot of people are just mentally conditioned to believe the JRPG party are "the good guys" and therefore she has no logical reason to be so against someone joining, but they can't see the characters' perspective: this is a shady group that's been keeping secrets and risks their lives on a weekly basis, and they're forcing another teenager in right after she got stuck in Tartarus for weeks unprepared. lol, you and I are on the same page about Mitsuru's social link feeling like a rom-com... BUT that turned me against it as I've seen a LOT of bad rom-coms in my day.
I agree that Yukari gets demonised way too much. In fact, I believe she's more correct. She more righteous than Mitsuru. She's kind of right about her. Even if you can argue that Fuuka wasn't pressured, the fact that she allowed a 10 year old on the shadow death squad really throws Mitsuru's morals into question. Especially since she knows who Ken is to her and SEES' history. It's not like the Ikutsuki forced her, he doesn't have more power than her in SEES, especially as she's the actual leader of the combat part of SEES and the daughter of SEES actual leader. Unless, Mitsuru's dad was demonstrated to want this for whatever reason, it just make Mitsuru seem worse, without it ever being properly commented on. Yukari doesn't even properly question how fucked it is that they are get 10 year old child, an orphan no less, involved in life threatening business.
P3 was my first Persona game, and tied for my favorite with 5, as it hit me right when I needed it back in 2020. Watching this makes me want to go back and start a new play through.
Okay, that was epic. Sadly I played this game while I was not as mature and barely know any english, so, had not as enjoyable of an expirience, but thankfully the "new and improved" version is now live and is my high time to try again)
Good shit good shit, watched this over the course of a week and really glad I managed to finish. P3 to me... is a beautiful beautiful game, one that I believe manages to balance its themes with blunt yet steadfast realism. One that changed my life... in an absolute pleathora of ways, broke me out of some of the worst depression I'd faced up to that point.
this is one of the greatest videos i have ever watched, period. persona 3 is my second favorite game in the series and my favorite of the hashino games by a large margin. ive always appreciated the aesthetics, the love and care put into iwatodai/tatsumi port, the characters you meet, the places you visit, and the story that atlus uses those places to tell. its not perfect but it means a lot to me and persona 3 portable specifically was actually a big part of my self discovery, coming to understand myself, my identity, my place in the world. i can't really say id be who i am today without p3 and even if it isn't my favorite video game ever or even my favorite jrpg ever, its still a really really really important game to me and one of the most meaningful experiences ive ever had in my life, and this video was great supplementary material to that experience and im very grateful that you took the time and effort to share your own experience so thoroughly and in-depth!
This was a great video. Persona 3 is personally my favourite one in the series and one of my favourite pieces of media in general. So I really appreciate it for the work that you put in and your dedication in making this video. You did an excellent job. Aigis was the best girl for me and also one of my favourite characters, but I can understand your reasoning of not liking her that much compared to others.
the yukari segment was so refreshing, you expressed pretty much everything i've felt about yukari. i'm glad you pointed out that a lot of the hate is purely based in misogyny (waifu war obsessed gamer bros with bruised egos because she wouldn't give them their romance anime moment.) i think i might have a different perspective than most since i'm a staunch girly girl of a similar age to yukari and i tend to gravitate towards girly characters. i've never gotten the hate towards her (i've avoided the answer, but i don't think that's too relevant as people complain about her attitude throughout the game). it's clear she's an overall kind and caring person, but she has emotions and get things wrong sometimes. that's human, not to mention that she's a teenager. the hatred towards her feels so forced sometimes, but i hope your video might shift the perception of yukari a little.
Wtf are you talking about, she's just a dick that attacks junpei for no reason, every one of the party has issues and grieves for something, yet she's gotta be justified for being an awful person while the others aren't cunts?
its not misogyny its narrow mindedness, to appreciate her is to be open to her arc and characterization which a lot wouldn't of been cause they were younger first seeing the games and didn't think beyond themselves, i.e empathy and thinking from another's perspective - the rest is group think, for those that know little of the games or skip around play-throughs wouldn't get the full picture anyway, not buzz phrasings
@@marcusclark1339I like your phrasing more, saying people who dislike Yukari just hate all real women is very harmful toward discussion. It leads to others getting defensive and others who agree with the insult not listening to others and just seeing them as bad people. And fanboys/fangirls of Yukari will just scream misogyny whenever someone dares not like their queen.
yeah persona 3 is great, one of my favorite games it's kind of funny cause seeing others play thorugh it and some say that "man this game needs a remake not cause of gameplay or pacing but it's so dated with the writing and characters." i mean i would like a remake but thematic concept about life and death, the cast learning to cope with grief, growing to trust and bond along side each other thats the fundementals that make P3 stand out to me the most
I really loved this video, it definitely put to words how I feel about persona 3, maybe cause im the same and it was also my first persona game, Persona 3 Portable and I'm really loving reload right now too! Definitely plan to watch more of your videos as well while on lunch lol
honestly aside from the ai actually being pretty competent and emphasizing leader/team synergy with your party members, i think being able to see the turn cycle of *every* person in battle instead of just only the person thats turn is next like the other games do makes ai party worth it for me lol
Imagine actually making me feel like trying P3 with AI party members. Also thank you for pointing out the 'exposition dump' complaint. It's complete bullshit and ever since Simply Dad's video I've heard it parroted with the same flawed points. Overall though, this game is great. I genuinely just played it because I wanted more Persona after beating Persona 5 Strikers and game had a weird effect on me. It's one of the few games that can genuinely bring me to tears and I love it
Agreed Persona 3 has the strongest main cast in the series because every characters feel like an actual individual with their own struggle and ideology. unlike P4 and P5 where everybody already trust you from the starts and their entire characteristic are revolve around you.
i saw this video a while go on my feed but i wanted to save it as i didn't finish persona 3 at the time. coming back to the video finishing it, persona 3 really is an experience that i cherish a lot, especially after i was nervous about the game because people kept saying the characters were bad or that it was the "worst" gameplay wise. im also really happy that you gave a fair judgement of the femc route, i always encounter a lot of people saying her as a character "ruins" persona 3 but i have the headcanon that femc still is as depressed as makoto, she just has a different way of expressing it through hiding it. great video overall!.
when i was younger (15 yr old) i used to think that yukari was really a btch, a really mean girl, specially towards junpei, a decade later i replay the game and come to the realization that she was, in fact a very likeable person, that was, such a strange yet, good feeling, it make me realize how i grow and how dump dump i was has a teenager
About the coziness of the Tarturus dungeon, I agree there. This really actually fits for a lot of JRPGs, expecially PS2 ones. You can just sit back and mindlessly do random battles or in P3s case climb the tower. Well of course you'd have to be prepared for bosses, but it is still relaxing in its own little way. Same thing to the Velvet Room which even applies to P4 and 5. Even SMT with its Cathedral of Shadows. Also I need to replay this game. Want to give this more of a second chance. Maybe has to do with a certain 3rd game of a series on a Nintendo Switch thats a JRPG and also has themes of death that is now one of my favorite games ever.
The breakdown and emphasis of the combat system and why the AI controlled party is actually built fairly well based on things like turn order/new tactics/skills/enemy scanning is why I enjoy your content specifially as a Persona / SMT youtuber. I'd be lying if I said it's not also because you validate many of my own thoughts about the series and this game, but it's mainly because I feel like you focus on things others overlook or maybe forget to discuss!
I just wanted to say, that I really enjoyed this video. All of your videos have been really incredible, and I think you talked about all the right points in this one. Keep up the great work!
I definitely felt that with the Mamoru and Kazushi links. I'm a professional wrestler and it was my dream turned reality. Due to upcoming back surgery for early next year, I have to leave something I love so much. Or at least the part of the job I love so much. So I'm living it up and enjoying the time while I can until the surgery. Also persona 3 is a game that means a lot to me, partly due to the circumstances in which I played it.
Fantastic video this was my first persona and you help put the reasons I prefer this game over the others into words for the story and characters and atmosphere throughly have enjoyed the video glad to be a patron
I'm playing portable and I'm trying to play the way the game was originally made. I really enjoy the allies ai. They feel like the actual characters making decisions. Junpei genuinely makes dumb mistakes sometimes and it feels in character. Mitsuru tends to do exactly what is optimal, which is exactly what I expect of the most experienced member.
@@samreddig8819imo it's not even worth it playing trough the answer tbh, best to just watch the entire story on UA-cam. It's too grindy. And i wouldn't say the game is incomplete without it the message of the game is still the same and i might say the ending is way stronger in the journey without knowing what happens in the answer
I finally finished your vid, after finishing P3P. Man I was ugly crying for 20 mins getting to the rooftop with Aigis, and the ending song I can't even listen to that song without crying (especially the English vo). I am glad after 2 years after I finished the game, the emotion and my love for the game is still there. I love Persona 3 top 3 games of all time the Ps2 graphics/vibs give me nostalgia to my childhood which I never played this game. I don't know a ton on P3R but at least people can experience the story and go back to playing P3Fes or P3P. Also getting of Reddit/Watching P4 UA-camrs definitely helped my mental in that gab of not replaying p3
never did i think i'd see JohneAwesome in a bubbletea video (4 month old video but keep up the great work, bubbletea! love the megaten videos a lot, i platted persona 3 portable a few weeks ago on PS5 and now im gonna play FES soon thanks to this video)
Love this video! A lot of your points, especially those related to Yukari and Shinji, are things I've thought about for a while but didn't know how to articulate. And you gave me a completely new perspective on/appreciation for Mitsuru, who I wasn't that interested in before. Thanks for making this!
I finished Portable a few weeks or so ago and still can't stop thinking about it. Discovered your channel a bit before I started playing it and actively avoided all of the videos on 3 before I could play it myself. Glad I waited since this is was great. I like how you're making your own opinions on these games clear. It might sound strange but I felt like I was having a sort of a conversation with this video while watching it. We definitely have differing perspectives and opinions on some things about this game and the rest of them but I can see where you were coming from most of the time. Gives me a nice feeling of my intelligence being respected enough to have the balls to say stuff that a lot of people disagree with about these games, if that makes any sense. Parroting all the mainstream opinions gives the feeling of just being a community yes-man and that puts me to sleep usually, I like hearing differing opinions. 3 isn't my favorite game of the series that I've played so far (3P, 4G, 5 and 5R), but it absolutely has my favorite ending. That scene with Aigis on the rooftop always makes me tear up. Keep up the great work and much love from a random on the internet
Persona 3 isn’t just my favorite because it’s the game I discovered when I was nine and the first Persona game I played. It also, in my eyes, has the best characters and music out of the 5 games.

Atlus was on the verge of bankruptcy and decided to make a game about death ☠️

It's what op said
Also, Fuuka wasn't the one who reached out to mend things, or offer friendship irc

I feel like not enough people talk about how Shinji literally came back from the dead to give minato that last piece of encouragement he needed
Did ya see that comment Shinji

It's really hard to beat, and imo neither p4 or p5 came any close
P3 made me care about the characters and actually made you feel as if the protagonist was its own individual, and you're going on a Journey with him. The ending only emphasizes that.
the pacing nd gameplay has improved sm since p3 tho, it still does have my fav message throughout the whole series but holy shit u can tell the dev team during 3 was new
You mentioned the positives while overlooking the negatives
P3/p3fes negatives:
Bland level design
Terrible s.links, lack of slinks for many of the SEES team.
Cannot fully control party during combat
Dumb ai
Story falls flat just after midway point and only gets somewhat interesting towards the end
Some of the music was not good at all.
@@desmondgovender3142also what songs did you not like? I think persona 3 has the best soundtrack out of them all
Yessss knock down is your friend.
Thanks for doing this service for P3 and all us stans of it 🙏
The 2 best UA-camrs that openly rep P3 Proudly out thr. Keep doing what your doing.
Late, but it's also acknowledging that having a Persona is also a curse. It's not just a cool power, it comes with a burden.
The difference is that Akihiko already knows about Personas. In the later persona games, the protag is always the first to awaken and figure out what it is in the party.
Yeah P4 and P5 feel too comical and 'safe'. like the characters reaction are predictable and has no depth on it.

Persona 3 is my favorite video game of all time, so I really appreciate you being a voice advocating for it when so many people write it off.
Well said!

My guardian insisted on buying it because i had already pointed it out before i looked at the price tag
I actually felt physically sick
Even now i still feel immense guilt over buying clothing and food
Growing up poor can traumatize you.
the segment on yukari is important, so many times i'll see people dismiss yukari as a stone cold bitch when she really only gets angry when it's warranted. the game literally goes out of its way to show that she is a sweet and caring person, so when people call her a bitch for simply standing up for herself after being sexually objectified and call junpei a bro after doing said objectifying, it begs the question as to what the real reason people hate her is.
I actually think her English voice acting plays a part in it. Michelle Ruff is a good VA, but voice direction has Yukari sounding harsh most of the time, while hearing Yukari's Japanese voice in Q2 she sounds a lot sweeter there.
The best part is that a persona is the reflection of one's personality right? If she didn't care about others, then why is hers a dedicated healer?
Sounds like a big Shenpai moment.
@@2mellow35 Ken's also a 10-year-old kid who's dealing with the fact that he's an orphan so...
the way i cried over the shinji part and not in the "oh the timeline is messed up" way but in the "HE HURTS ME SO BAD I FEEL ILL I MISS HIM" way. after i played through his social link i Cried upon realization during the full moon scene, and i just. man. shinjiro is an amazing character even with him not having a proper end because he's not Supposed to, he's supposed to die, and he accepts it, but he definitely held regrets and shinjiro's social link in p3p shows that so well... im sad ok
This game is one of my favorites of all time. It changed me as a person and helped shape who I am today.
Same!
Maybe anime shouldn't be what made you into an adult? Just saying
@@MizuFujimori ok
@@MizuFujimori anime is a form of art, art is meant to send a message and touch people

One aspect of the tactics system of Persona 3 that people don't seem to realise, is that each character's AI actually acts based on their personality.
If you set them up into Act Freely, and observe how they act, you'll realise:
* Just how freaking reckless Junpei is 😂
* How caring Yukari is.
Thanks for this great in-depth video!
thank you for watching!

Thank you for mentioning Memories of the city at the near end! It is definitely one of the best pieces of music in video game history.
You made around 200k people watch a 2 hours video in the TikTok shorts era
This video is amazing im glad you gave credits for the characters before i tried p3 i heard people saying p5 for the gameplay p4 for the characters and p3 for the story but after finishing it I can argue that p3 have a better cast than 5
59:26 I'll cant forget and small dialogue you have with Yukari when Shinji was with SEES telling you that since we have shinji now we can replace junpei but if you choose to agree with that she'll tell you it was a joke and junpei is still a part of SEES
Their relationship is like siblings annoying each other but caring for the other deep down
+ Someone gave recognition to mutatsu
I’m glad someone speaks out for Yukari, literally such a good character! I’ll never understand why people shit on her, but praise Chie
Because Chie isn't shit. They don't even compare lol

King you dropped this 👑
Honestly my favourite big video about Persona 3, took the words out of my mouth on nearly everything and talked about things that I wanted people to talk about.
GOOD STUFF!!
thank you
You know, I was always confused why you removed your original video on Persona 3. However, I'm glad that you decided to take the time to make a definitive retrospective on the game. This was a pretty well written video, can't wait for more.
P3fes was the last persona game i played after 4 and 5, but hotdamn its by FAR my favorite. Such an incredible game
comfort video
Thoroughly enjoyed the video!!
you started talking about Junpei at 58 mins but i got distracted by the traverse town music in the background, great video
You know it’s a good day when bubbletea posts
How did I just realize the genius of having the great seal cost 100% of your hp? No other skills let you kill yourself, but that's exactly what needs to happen to seal nyx
P3 and 4 by far had the most impact on me, this was a really well made video, great work!
Sorry for my English.
I was really happy to hear your opinion about Shinjiro, cuz he is underrated. But maybe it’s because he really shines in his social link with femc. Great video, thank u for persona 3 content
I'm about to watch every second of this masterpiece
His friendship route works too, but let's face it, it's impossible to NOT romance him lol
Also I really doubt the supposed P3 remake will add FEMC's route (it's probably just gonna be P3 FES with P5 graphics), but if they do, I really would love to see Shinji as the wild card in The Answer.
I may just have to go and replay the game now :X
The only thing that is bad about her is the requirements neccessary and how late she unlocks as a social link, meaning if you dont go by a guide or dont know the game really well, you may even entirely miss out on her social link, or at least large parts of it, not to mention her christmas date.
I just finished persona 3 for the first time yesterday so this is the perfect time to watch this
Just played P2EP and thought about your P2 videos that inspired me during playthrough of P2IS. And here you are dropping content in minutes ! Thanks!

(in all seriousness, i like the video! i just thought your choice of clips to demonstrate the difference between the two games is a little ironically funny :3)
Love the video btw, unlike the last one your video doesnt come off as clickbait because this is an actual fact. You also do a great job with all the timestamps. Although I still think 2 hours is absurd. But i do agree that there's so much to talk about its mind blowing.
DAMN this was good! i love long analysis style videos, and you knocked this out of the park! keep it up!! :)
Wow this channel is so underrated, great work man.
kazoushi and mamoru are parallels and i think that's pretty cool
Wake up babe 2 hour long persona 3 video from bubbletea
this is one of the greatest videos i have ever watched, period. persona 3 is my second favorite game in the series and my favorite of the hashino games by a large margin. ive always appreciated the aesthetics, the love and care put into iwatodai/tatsumi port, the characters you meet, the places you visit, and the story that atlus uses those places to tell. its not perfect but it means a lot to me and persona 3 portable specifically was actually a big part of my self discovery, coming to understand myself, my identity, my place in the world. i can't really say id be who i am today without p3 and even if it isn't my favorite video game ever or even my favorite jrpg ever, its still a really really really important game to me and one of the most meaningful experiences ive ever had in my life, and this video was great supplementary material to that experience and im very grateful that you took the time and effort to share your own experience so thoroughly and in-depth!
thank you! i really appreciate it. always happy to see this game bring happiness to people.
Ngl I loved her even more after Answer
Wtf are you talking about, she's just a dick that attacks junpei for no reason, every one of the party has issues and grieves for something, yet she's gotta be justified for being an awful person while the others aren't cunts?
You're so shallow dude
its not misogyny its narrow mindedness, to appreciate her is to be open to her arc and characterization which a lot wouldn't of been cause they were younger first seeing the games and didn't think beyond themselves, i.e empathy and thinking from another's perspective - the rest is group think, for those that know little of the games or skip around play-throughs wouldn't get the full picture anyway, not buzz phrasings
YOU TIMED THE GREAT SEAL TO "GIVE IT UP SON GAMES OVER" TOO??
Honestly that part is just so fucking hype.
honestly aside from the ai actually being pretty competent and emphasizing leader/team synergy with your party members, i think being able to see the turn cycle of *every* person in battle instead of just only the person thats turn is next like the other games do makes ai party worth it for me lol
It’s a good day when a new P3 vid drops
i saw this video a while go on my feed but i wanted to save it as i didn't finish persona 3 at the time. coming back to the video finishing it, persona 3 really is an experience that i cherish a lot, especially after i was nervous about the game because people kept saying the characters were bad or that it was the "worst" gameplay wise. im also really happy that you gave a fair judgement of the femc route, i always encounter a lot of people saying her as a character "ruins" persona 3 but i have the headcanon that femc still is as depressed as makoto, she just has a different way of expressing it through hiding it. great video overall!.
I love how you waited to use the great seal to the line "spit it out son, Game's over!"
when i was younger (15 yr old) i used to think that yukari was really a btch, a really mean girl, specially towards junpei, a decade later i replay the game and come to the realization that she was, in fact a very likeable person, that was, such a strange yet, good feeling, it make me realize how i grow and how dump dump i was has a teenager
I'm sure I'm in the minority that likes Tartarus and Mementos music lol. They just fit well imo and didn't really annoy me either
My only problem with portable is that the epilogue is cut to that version. Meaning the ending of the game is just straight missing.

@@samreddig8819imo it's not even worth it playing trough the answer tbh, best to just watch the entire story on UA-cam. It's too grindy.
Can't watch this because I haven't finished FES yet, but I'm leaving a comment to boost this video's performance. Love your videos.
Keep up the good work also I would like to see what your thoughts on the mascot friends from Ps or good/bad adult relationships with the mc
I'm always happy to see an analysis of one of my favorite games ever :)
Currently watching this whilst fighting Nyx. Thank you for this.
Bubbletea I love you thanks for a 2 hour vid
